LIZZIE LEE DEDMON
SHELBY — Mrs. Lizzie Lee Kendrick Dedmon, 98, of 621 Cherryville Road, died Friday, April 26, 2002, at her home. She was born Dec. 4, 1903, the 10th child of the late Lawson Irvin and Ponola Camp Kendrick. She grew up in the Pleasant Hill Community of Cleveland County. She attended Patterson Springs School and later became a student at Boiling Springs High School (now Gardner-Webb University), where she graduated in the class of 1924. In June 1925, she married A.V. Dedmon, also of Cleveland County. In her young adult days, Mrs. Dedmon taught school. Later she and her husband established A.V. Dedmon Trucking, but her main occupation was being a homemaker. She was a longtime member of Elizabeth Baptist Church, where she was active in the Adult Training Union and as a Sunday school teacher. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Richard Kendrick Dedmon. She is survived by a brother, Tom Kendrick of the Pleasant Hill Community; three sons, Charles Dedmon and his wife, Doris, Joseph H. Dedmon and Roy Lee Dedmon and his wife, Connie, all of Shelby; three daughters, Mary Ruth Hord and her husband, Horace, of Winston-Salem, Doris Steele and her husband, Dale of Burlington, and Sue Dover and her husband, Troy, of Shelby; her grandchildren, Deborah Hord of Tulsa, Okla., Melanie Hord and her husband, Felipe Arauz, of Costa Rica, Charlotte Hord and fiancée, Scott Smith, of Carrboro, Emily Hord MacMillan and her husband, John, of Winston-Salem, Karen Steele Havey and her husband, Daniel, of Raleigh, Carol Steele Stephens and her husband, Mike, of Charlotte, Lisa Dedmon Kiger of Charlotte, Lora Dedmon of Shelby, Lynda Dedmon of Venice, Calif., Lenita Dedmon of Belmont, Tyson Dover and his wife, Suzanne, Lizzie Grace Dedmon, Sarah Gwen Dedmon and AnnaLee Victoria Dedmon, Susannah Schenck Dedmon and Garth Dedmon all of Shelby; nine great-grandchildren, Joseph, Henry and Katherine Havey, Madeline and Kelly Frances Kiger, Isaac Arauz, Elizabeth and Duncan MacMillan and Holden Dover; and a dear friend of nearly 70 years, Mrs. Sudie Peele of Kings Mountain. The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Elizabeth Baptist Church with the Rev. Jeff Brendle and Dr. Dale O. Steele officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Her body will be brought back to her home at 621 Cherryville Road this afternoon. The family will receive friends today from 3 to 8 p.m. at the home, 621 Cherryville Road, Shelby. Memorials may be made to Cemetery Funds of Elizabeth Baptist Church, Pleasant Hill Baptist Church or to the charity of your choice. Clay-Barnette Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

LOIS POWER
CHARLOTTE — Mrs. Lois Carol Cochran Power, 87, died Thursday, April 25, 2002, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Cane Creek Baptist Church. Burial will be at Golden Church of the Brethren. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church. Washburn & Dorsey Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

JOHN WATERS
FOREST CITY — Mr. John Michael Waters, 24, of 297 Bob Rollins Road, died Friday, April 26, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital. The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Liberty Baptist Church with the Rev. Owen Duncan officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 at Harrelson Funeral Home, Caroleen.

ETTA PRUITT
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Etta Rae Hawkins Pruitt, 84, of 735 Chestnut Ridge Church Road, died Thursday, April 25, 2002, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. She was born in Cleveland County, daughter of the late John William Hawkins and Docia Luetta Pearson Hawkins. She was a member of Chestnut Ridge Baptist Church in Kings Mountain, where she taught Sunday school for 37 years. She was also homemaker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by six brothers, Rob Hawkins, P.A. Hawkins, Crayton Hawkins, A.R. Hawkins, Clarence Hawkins and Ken Hawkins; and four sisters, Zellie Hamrick, Susan Wood, Nicie Kelly and Ethel Pittman. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, the Rev. Mitchell M. Pruitt of Kings Mountain; three sons and their wives, Mike and Becky Pruitt and Douglas and Lynn Pruitt, all of Kings Mountain, and Donald and Rhonda Pruitt of Hickory; a daughter, Pat Pruitt Thomas and her husband, Jim, of Shelby; 13 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Chestnut Ridge Baptist Church with the Rev. Mitchell Pruitt and Mickey Pruitt officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Chestnut Ridge Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 605, Kings Mountain, NC 28086. Harris Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

EARTHALINE LOGAN
FOREST CITY — Mrs. Earthaline Logan, 66, of 150 B Lake St., died Friday, April 26, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital in Rutherfordton. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Thompson Brothers Funeral Home.

VINA MERCER
ELLENBORO — Mrs. Vina Carlene Beck Mercer, 48, of 1601 New House Road, formerly of Lily Street in Shelby, died Wednesday, April 24, 2002, at her home. A native of Haywood County, she was a daughter of Ella Mae Lanning Beck of Waynesville and the late Jarvis Goldie Beck. She was a homemaker. In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Tommy Mercer of the home; a son, Michael Wayne Mercer of the home; a daughter, Tabatha Sabrina Mercer of the home; a stepson, Alan Mercer of Waynesville; four stepdaughters, Patricia Worley, Renee Aikens and Regina Moore, all of Waynesville, and Jeannelle Mercer of Bostic; a brother, Bruce Beck of Waynesville; and two sisters, Louise Williams and Barbara Taylor, both of Waynesville. A memorial service will be Sunday at 12:30 p.m. at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Mooresboro with the Revs. Bo Wagner, Joshua Rhodes and Jeremai Byrd officiating. McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home, Cliffside, is in charge of arrangements.

CALVIN CAMP
RUTHERFORDTON — Mr. Calvin Camp, 32, of 112 Levi St., died Friday, April 26, 2002, at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Thompson Brothers Funeral Home.

CHARLES HARRY III
SHELBY — Mr. Charles F. Harry III, 65, of 149 Lakemont Drive, died Friday, April 26, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Shelby Presbyterian Church with Dr. Luke Harkey and the Rev. Allen Huff officiating. A graveside service will precede the funeral at 2 p.m. at Grover Cemetery with Masonic Rites by Stateline Masonic Lodge No. 375. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to YMCA, 411 Cherryville Road, Shelby, NC 28150; Heineman Research in care of Carolinas Medical Center, 1000 Blythe Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28232; or a charity of your choice.

CALDWELL DAVIS
MOORESBORO — Mr. Caldwell Davis, 74, of 119 Mirtis Lane, died Wednesday, April 24, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. A native of Rutherford County, he was the son of the late Dute and Maude Petty Davis. He was the widower of the late Mirtis McSwain Davis. He was a member of Suck Creek Baptist Church and was a mail carrier retiree for 37 years of Cone Mills. He is survived by five daughters, Sandra Hambrick of Forest City, Gladys D. Freeman of the home, Shelby Hall and Macy Ann Hickman of Mooresboro and Margaret McKinney of Boiling Springs; three sons, Sonny Bristol of Boiling Springs, Jimmie Lee Davis of Mooresboro and Johnny Davis of Kings Mountain; his sister, Nora B. Jeffries of Boiling Springs; 35 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Monday at 4 p.m. at Suck Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Tony Macamson, A. J. Smith, Carolyn Bratton, Alvin Brown and evangelists Caroline Hone and Linda Hardin officiating. Burial will be in Suck Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church. Casket bearers will be his grandsons. Flower bearers will be his granddaughters. Foster Funeral Home of Gaffney is in charge of arrangements.

Charles R. Keaton
SHELBY — Mr. Charles “Butch” Keaton, 43, of 1011 Gantt St., died Monday, April 22, 2002, at his parent’s home on 909 Earl Road, Shelby. Charles lived most of his life in Orange, N.J., where he was educated and worked for the state of New Jersey before moving to Shelby. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Gastonia. He is survived by his parents, Paul and Christine L. Keaton Jr.; a son, Garnelle T. Keaton of Union, N.J.; a grandson, Elijah Davion Dawkins of Gaffney, S.C.; a sister, Julia K. Signal of Shelby; a brother, Byron Keaton of Atlanta; a niece and nephew, Siera Christine and John-Paul, both of Shelby; two grandmothers, Mrs. Esther K. Millsaps and Mrs. Beulah P. Littlejohn, both of Shelby; three aunts, Betty L. Tyson of Elizabeth, N.J., Joyce L. Corry and Priscilla L. Hoskins, both of Shelby; and two uncles, Raymond Littlejohn Jr. of Floresville, Texas and James L. Littlejohn of Sacramento, Calif. The funeral will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Good Samaritan Fellowship Baptist Church with Pastor R.F. Devoe officiating. Burial will be in Webb Memorial Lawns. The family will receive friends 45 minutes before the service at the church and at other times at the family home at 909 Earl Road, Shelby. Dockery’s Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Lila M. Gash, 82, of 1505 Northwood Drive, died Wednesday, April 24, 2002, at Kings Mountain Hospital. Funeral arrangements will be announced by J.W. Gill & Sons Funeral Home.

Vina Mercer
ELLENBORO — Mrs. Vina Carlene Beck Mercer, 48, of 1601 New House Road, died Wednesday, April 24, 2002, at her home. A memorial service will be Sunday at 12:30 p.m. at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Mooresboro with the Revs. Bo Wagner, Joshua Rhodes and Jeremai Byrd officiating. McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home of Cliffside is in charge of arrangements.

Wanda Hamilton
BALTIMORE — Mrs. Wanda Elaine Hamilton, 51, formerly of Rutherford County, died Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church in Lake Lure with the Rev. Gettys Jackson officiating. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church. Thompson Brothers Funeral Home of Forest City is in charge of arrangements.

Jan Bakker
SHELBY — Mr. Jan Bakker passed away Friday, April 19, 2002, in Shelby. He was born March 29, 1921, in Dubbel-dam, Holland, the son of Jos Adrianus and Hendrika Van Vught Bakker. He grew up playing soccer and fishing, and married his childhood sweetheart, Tina Broekhuisen, before starting his worldwide travels as a mechanical and electrical engineer. He and his family lived in Indonesia, New Zealand, Libya, Europe and across the United States. He became a U.S. citizen in 1965. He retired in 1984 from a long career at The American Tobacco Co. in Durham and moved to Orange Beach, Ala., where he built his dream house on the water so he could fish every day. Jan was a legendary fisherman and an accomplished builder. In his lifetime he built several boats, two houses, a car, a motor home, lots of furniture and grandfather clocks for each of his four children. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather and will be sorely missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his wife Christina G. Broekhuisen Bakker of the home; two sons, Jos Johan Bakker and his wife, Patti, of Destin, Fla., and Joop Jan Bakker and his wife, Mary Ann, of Shelby; two daughters, Riejan Bakker Edmison and her husband, Allan, of Houston, Texas, and Michelle Bakker Pridgen and her husband, Don, of Elk Creek, Va.; and six grandchildren, Tyrus and Adam Edmison, Blakley and Cole Bakker, Drexell and Carson Bakker. A celebration of life memorial service will be held at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home on Saturday from 3 to 5 p.m. The family asks that memorial gifts be made to The American Parkinson’s Disease Association, 1250 Highlan Blvd., Suite 4 B, Staten Island, NY 10305-1946.

‘Gene’ McGaha
MOORESBORO — Mr. Boyd Eugene “Gene” McGaha, 67, of 4860 U.S. Highway 74 Business E., died Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital. A native of Macon County, he was a son of the late Boyd and Joan McGaha. He was former supervisor for Thompson Contractors, Inc., for 20 years and was the owner of Gene’s Recycling, Inc. He is survived by three daughters, Barbara Wilkie of Forest City, Brenda Sorrow of Belton, S.C., and Linda Robbins of Forest City; three brothers, Joe McGaha of Ellenboro, Carl McGaha of Belton and Johnny McGaha of Liberty, S.C.; three sisters, Christine Blanton of Cliffside, Dot Jackson and Faye Johnson, both of Franklin; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Ann Dyer of Mooresboro. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Bryant Funeral Home Chapel in Franklin with the Revs. Wylie Gibson and Judson Hall officiating. Burial will be in Riverview United Methodist Church Cemetery. A visitation will be held tonight from 7 to 8:30 at The Padgett and King Mortuary in Forest City and a second visitation will be Friday at Bryant Funeral Home in Franklin from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The family will be at home of a brother, Joe McGaha, 1846 Oak Grove Church Road, Ellenboro.

FOREST CITY — Mrs. Mildred “Midge” Hunter Collins, 76, of 135 Charles St., died Wednesday, April 24, 2002, at her home. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Padgett and King Mortuary.
