Mabel O. Hahn

Mabel O. Hahn, 96, of Devils Lake, ND, formerly of Tioga, ND, died Friday, Aug. 6, 2004 at Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Minnewaukan.

Visitation will be held Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Home, Minnewaukan, and Friday from 12-2 p.m. at the church.

Nelson Funeral Home, Minnewaukan, is in charge of arrangements.

John Newma

John Newman, 51, of Cando, ND, formerly of Egeland, ND died Friday, Dec. 26, 2003 at Towner County Medical Center, Cando.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Lakeview Lutheran Church, Egeland, ND.

Visitation will be held today from 2-8 p.m. at the Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home, Cando, and Tuesday for one hour before services at the church.

Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home, Cando, is in charge of arrangements.

Rachel E. Roberts

Rachel E. Roberts, 89, of Lakota, ND, formerly of Devils Lake, ND, died Saturday Dec. 13, 2003 at Mercy Hospital in Devils Lake, ND.

Further arrangements are pending with Aaker Funeral Home, Lakota.

Calvin D. Willis

Calvin D. Willis, 79, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, at a Portland Hospital.

Memorial services were held Wednesday at Wilson's Chapel of the Roses. Interment will be held at a later date, at the Roseburg National cemetery.

Calvin was born on July 29, 1925, in Tolna, ND, to Dell and Lillian (Haas) Willis. After Cal graduated from Waldport High School in Waldport, OR, he entered the Army during W.W.II on Oct. 15, 1943. Cal then became a Medic and earned the Victory Medal, two Bronze Campaign Stars, Bronze Service Arrowhead, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon, Bronze Star Medal, Good Conduct Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star Meritorious, and an Honorable Discharge button with the Medical Badge on June 1, 1946. Cal was proud of his military service and was honored to have been able to serve his country when asked. Cal lived in Roseburg, OR, for the past 42 years. Cal married Bernadette Wurtz in Tucson, AZ, on Nov. 11, 1990.

Cal was involved with Disabled American Veterans, American Legion, Member of the Moose Lodge, and the Elks Lodge.

Cal is preceded in death by both of his parents, Dell and Lillian; three brothers; one sister; daughter, Marsha Felton; and one step-son, Jeffrey Stevenson.

Cal is survived by his wife, Bernadette Willis of Roseburg and Tucson; brother, Don (Evelyn) Willis, Cooperstown; a sister, Vivian Dahl, Tolna; sons, Dell (Roberta) Willis of North Bend, OR; Bill (Gail) Willisof Roseburg; son-in-law, Warren Felton of Bandon; step-sons, John Goodwin of Los Angeles, CA; Dennis Goodwin of Lake Ellmo, MN; step-daughter, Kass Goodwin of Mahtomedi, MN; Robin Reinary of Las Vegas, NV; 13 grandchildren, 10 step-grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Wilson's Chapel of the Roses is in charge of arrangements.

Geneva Stephens Fahrnkopf

Geneva Stephens Fahrnkopf, 89, of Bottineau, ND, formerly of Rolla and Rock Lake, ND, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004 at Good Sam Center of Bottineau.

Funeral arrangements are pending with Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home of Cando.

Lilian Melin

Lilian Melin, 90, formerly of Sheyenne, ND, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004 at the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd in New Rockford, ND.

Arrangements are pending with Evans Funeral Home, New Rockford.

Irene Nicholson

Irene Nicholson, 84, of Carrington, ND, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004 at the Carrington Health Center.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Federated Church of Carrington.

A Prayer Service will be held Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Evans Funeral Home, Carrington.

Evans Funeral Home, Carrington, is in charge of arrangements.

Laura Sylvester

Laura Sylvester, 93, of Lakota, ND, formerly of Towner, ND, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004 at Mercy Hospital in Devils Lake, ND.

Further arrangements are pending with Aaker Funeral Home, Lakota.

Albert Nelson

Albert Nelson, 93, of Bisbee, ND, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004 at his home.

Arrangements are pending with Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home, Cando, ND.

Rose Schwab

Rose Schwab, 83, of Devils Lake, ND formerly of rural Esmond, ND died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004 at her home in Devils Lake.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake. Fr. C. F. Wilhelm will celebrate the Mass. A Graveside Service will be held at the St. Boniface Catholic cemetery, rural Esmond, ND on Monday at 1:30 p.m.

Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home Chapel, Devils Lake on Sunday from 1-9 p.m. with a Rosary Service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation on Monday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral Mass.

Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake, is in charge of arrangements.

Nellie Duursma

Nellie Duursma, 85, of Carrington, ND, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004 at the Carrington Health Center.

Arrangements are pending with Evans Funeral Home, Carrington.

Vernon Galow

Vernon Galow, 76, of Bisbee, ND, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004 at Presentation Medical Center of Rolla, ND.

Arrangements are pending with Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home, Cando, ND.

Earl B. Marshall

Earl B. Marshall, 91, of Devils Lake, ND died early Wednesday morning, Dec. 8, 2004 at Mercy Hospital, Devils Lake.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Gilbertson Funeral Home Chapel, Devils Lake. Rev. Marvin Winstryg will officiate and burial will be in the Devils Lake cemetery.

Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home on Sunday from 1-9 p.m. and on Monday from 9 a.m. until time of service.

Pallbearers will be Ray Strong, Joe Leiphon, Earl Besse, Phil Langerud, Donovan Herman and Scott Privratsky.

Earl Bryson Marshall was born June 4, 1913 at Livingston, MT the son of Shirley and Jesse Marshall. In his early life, Earl lived in Lincoln, NE and various cities in Colorado. Earl graduated from Hastings College in Hastings, NE. He also attended the University of North Dakota where he earned a Masters Degree in Education in 1966. Earl's first teaching experience was at Norman, NE.

On Dec. 13, 1940, Earl was united in marriage to Mildred E. Warnke and their son, Larry was born on April 9, 1944. In 1942 he and Mildred moved to St. Louis where Earl worked with the Army Ordinance Testing Facility. When World War II ended Earl began teaching at Devils Lake Central High School and taught there for 32 years.

Earl was a member of First United Methodist Church and a Life Member of the Kiwanis Club where he served as President and Secretary of the organization. In 2002 he received the Kiwanis International Appreciation Award. In 1998 Earl received the Unsung Hero Award and in 1971 he received the Outstanding Teacher Award for the State of North Dakota from the American Industrial Arts Association. In 2004 Earl was inducted into the Teacher Hall of Fame sponsored by the Devils Lake Public Schools Association.

Earl was a beloved husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed by all.

Earl is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mildred; son, Larry (Alicia) Marshall of San Diego, CA; three grandchildren, Stephen James Marshall of Mesa, AZ, twins, Sandra Mello of Marysville, CA and Susan Marie Marshall of Long Beach, CA; brothers, Warren Marshall and Clark Marshall of Florida; sisters, Elizabeth "Betty" Eisele, Boise, Idaho and Kathryn Byerrum, Yakima, WA.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake, is in charge of arrangements.

Rose Schwab

Rose Schwab, 83, of Devils Lake, ND formerly of rural Esmond, ND died on Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004 at her home in Devils Lake.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held today at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake. Fr. C. F. Wilhelm will celebrate the Mass. A Graveside Service will be held at the St. Boniface Catholic cemetery, rural Esmond, ND at 1:30 p.m. Military Honors will be accorded by the Neathery-Simensen Post #756, Devils Lake and VFW Post #4251, Esmond. Reading the Scriptures will be Mary Raisanen and Patricia Schwab. Gift bearers will be Amanda Schwab, Amelia Bart, Melissa Miller and Rupa Schwab.

Pallbearers will be Sebastian, Raymond, Jack, Leo and Adrian Hoffner and Leonard Schwab.

Rose Elizabeth Hoffner was born Nov. 17, 1921 on the family farmstead in rural Esmond, ND, the daughter of George and Elizabeth (Pfau) Hoffner. She was baptized and confirmed in the Roman Catholic faith, raised and educated in the Esmond area and graduated from Esmond High School in 1940. She attended Mayville College and graduated with a Clerical Studies Diploma. She then served her country during World War II in the Women's Auxiliary Army Corp (WAAC) for two years and was stationed in San Francisco. After World War II, she returned to North Dakota where she met and married Jacob "Jake" Schwab on Nov. 6, 1945 at Esmond. They established their home on the farm in rural Esmond where they lived and Rose worked the farm beside her husband for many years. In 1975, Rose began a career as a Special Education Teacher's Aide in Leeds for five years and then in 1980 she began a career as a Nurses' Aide working in various nursing homes for 20 years. She retired at the age of 79. Jake died on May 25, 1999.

Rose was a former member of St. Boniface Catholic Church and Altar Society at Esmond and was also a 30 year member of the VFW Auxiliary Post #4251 at Esmond where she served as the secretary for many years. Since moving to Devils Lake she has been a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Altar Society.

Rose had many hobbies and pastimes including knitting, crossword puzzles, baking and was an avid Democrat. Her knitted items and baking were always shared with friends and family. Her prayer life and great devotion to her faith and church were of the greatest importance to her. The highlights of her life were time spent with her family and friends.
