Lamon, Janice

Janice Lamon, age 91, Ulen, MN, died Sunday, March 21, 2004, in Viking Manor Nursing Home, Ulen, MN.

Janice Lucille Spry was born July 9, 1912 in Callaway, Minnesota, the daughter of Lawrence and Emma Zurn Spry. She was raised in Fargo by John P. and Anna Koel, her aunt and uncle. Janice graduated from Sacred Heart Academy, Fargo.

She married Marvin C. Myers October 30, 1938 in Fargo, North Dakota. Marvin passed away August 30, 1956. Janice continued to live in Fargo, where she worked in various stores. She married Harold Lamon March 20, 1970 in Fargo. Harold passed away January 24, 1999.

Janice lived most of her life in Fargo, but when Harold retired they moved to Hawley where they lived until his death. Janice’s hobbies were crocheting and embroidery work. Many people are enjoying her lovely gifts.

Janice is survived by one daughter, Karen (Charles) Giese, Billings, MT; two grandchildren, Jeff Giese, Jacksonville, FL, and Michele Giese, St. Augustine, FL; 3 great-grandsons, and one brother, Lee (Dorothy) Spry, Claypool, AZ.

Janice is also survived by 4 step-daughters, Harriet (William) Day, Betty (Dan) Thomson, Doris (Charles) Grani, and Mary (Ron) Olson, all of Hawley, MN; one step-son, Richard Lamon, Milwaukee, WI; and many step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her two husbands, and one grandson, Gregory Giese, in June 1997, two brothers, and three sisters.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Detroit Lakes Boys and Girls Club, or the charity of one’s choice.

The funeral mass for Janice will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday in St. Mary’s Cathedral, Fargo. Visitation will be held from 4-7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo, and from 2-3 p.m. Thursday in the church. Burial will be in Holy Cross cemetery, Fargo.

Ell, Leo

Leo died on Saturday, March 20, 2004, at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo at the age of 78.

Leo was born on April 20, 1925, the son of German Russian immigrants, John and Frances Ell, of Devils Lake, North Dakota. He grew up in this area and received his education at the Catholic Schools. Leo enlisted in the United States Navy when he was 17 years old. He proudly served his country during WWII where he worked as a Radioman on a flag ships including the USS Ahrens. After his discharge he attended college at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, and later made his home in Fargo. Leo was united in marriage to Dorothy Albert on August 10, 1953, at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Fargo. They made their home in Fargo where they raised their family. Leo worked as a professional salesman his entire career. He was last employed in pharmaceutical sales prior to his retirement.

Leo was a devoted family man who loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed visiting with neighbors and friends and taking pleasure in the simple things in life. He was a devote member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Fargo.

Leo is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Dorothy of Fargo; his children, Mamie (Jon) Lausch of Lakeville, Minnesota; John Ell of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Jerome (Amy) Ell of West Fargo, North Dakota; grandchildren, Harrison and Miles Lausch; and Robbie and Ryan Ell. He is also survived by his sister, Patti Bennett of California; and sister-in-law, Eileen Ell of Fargo. Leo was preceded in death by his parents; and 2 sisters and 3 brothers.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church.

VISITATION: 5-7:30 PM Tuesday March 23, 2004, at Boulger Funeral Home in Fargo – and also one hour prior to the funeral in the church on Wednesday

PRAYER SERVICE: 7:30 PM Tuesday at Boulger Funeral Home

FUNERAL: 1:30 PM Wednesday, March 24, 2004, at Church of the Nativity in Fargo

BURIAL: Holy Cross cemetery in Fargo

Greywind, Russell

Russell P. Greywind, age 40 died Tuesday, March 16, 2004 in Fargo.

Russell was born on September 28, 1963 in Devils Lake, ND to Lillian Rose Greywind. He graduated from Kicking Horse Job Corps in Ronan, Montana in 1984 as a mechanic and fire fighter. He also worked as an industrial painter in the F-M area. He was a Traditional singer and drummer and recorded with Red Nation. He loved to fish, ride motorcycles and horses and was considered the “entertainment director” of the family. Of all of Russ’s memories, his laughter will ring in our hearts the longest and the loudest.

He was a loving husband, father, son and brother who will be missed by his wife, Cindy of Fargo; children, Dexter of Spirit Lake, ND, Rhianna and Ciara of Fargo; mother, Lillian Rose Greywind of Spirit Lake, ND; sisters, Cecelia McKay Greywind of Fargo, Laura Alveshere, Denver, CO, and Christy Alveshere, Britton, SD; brothers, Ron Greywind of Fargo and Donald Alveshere of Denver, CO; step children, Bianca (Dan) Barton of Fargo, Dustin Trett of Fargo and Darren Trett of Fargo and many uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, John and Elsie Greywind, uncles, Tim and Charlie Greywind; aunts, Mary Esther Greywind Landers, Jeanette Greywind Meade and Rosemary Greywind McKay.

All night wake service starting at 3:30 pm on Sunday, March 21 at Unitarian Universalist Church, Fargo. Funeral service 2:30 pm on Monday, March 22 at the church. Burial will be in Springvale cemetery, Fargo.

Grove, Mary

Mary Joan Carroll Grove of Fargo, ND, died Monday, March 15, 2004, in Sun City, AZ. She was 83. She was preceded in death by parents Charles and Norah Carroll, and brother Eugene Carroll all of Billings, MT.

MJ was born on December 23, 1920 in Billings, MT. After graduating from Billings High School and a successful career as a drum majorette, this spirited cowgirl attended the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, MN. There she met future husband, John M. Grove. They were married in St. Paul on October 31, 1942.

After World War II, MJ and John settled in Fargo, where they raised their six children. They have lived in Fargo for 58 years.

MJ, the most energetic and focused person we ever knew, made Fargo a better place through her efforts. She was active in PEO, Junior League, the Cass County Welfare Board, Heirlooms Hospice Store, Pink Smocks, St. John’s Hospital, Nativity’s annual Christmas dinner and the Antiquarian Club, among others. For 20 years, she and business partner Mary Ellen Maltry ran Grove-Maltry Estate Liquidators. Their sales were always the talk of the town.

MJ is survived by John, husband of 61 years; her six children, John Jr. (Carmen Coyle) of Orono, MN, Katie of Bloomington, IN, Mark (Mary Grove) of Indianapolis, IN, Meg (Shane Albertson) of St. Paul, MN, Jane (Lauris Molbert) of Fargo, and Molly of St. Paul, MN; her six grandchildren; one great granddaughter; and sister-in-law Noreen of Billings, MT.

Visitation: Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo, from 5-7 PM on Monday, March 22, 2004. Vigil service at 7 PM Monday.

Funeral Mass: Church of the Nativity, Fargo, at 1 PM on Tuesday, March 23, 2004.

Interment: Riverside cemetery, Fargo.

Memorials are preferred to Heirloom Hospice Care, 1617 32nd Avenue South, Fargo, ND 58103.

We will remember MJ for her vim, vigor and vitality!

Gravel, Mary

Mary Gravel, Fargo, died Thursday, March 18, 2004, in Bethany Homes, Fargo, at the age of 94.

Mary Loaney was born September 4, 1909, to David and Agnes Loaney in rural Sherburne County, MN. She moved with her family to Onamia, MN, in 1917. In 1927, she married Francis Eugene Gravel. In 1947, they moved their family to Bemidji, MN. They lived there until 1966 when the two of them moved to Fargo, ND.

Mary Gravel was a volunteer at St. Luke’s (MeritCare) for 20 years. She was always active in DFL politics and became involved in Fargo when the leadership there received a call from Hubert Humphrey alerting them that she was a potential strong member. Mary was named North Dakota’s DFL Woman of the Year by the Non-Partisan League in 1981.

Mary was active on the board of the Fargo High Rise during her residence there. She also served on the Senior Commission for the State of North Dakota during Governor George Sinner’s term. She was a Gold Star Mother.

Mary is preceded in death by her husband and two sons, Marcus and Thomas. She is survived by three sons: Douglas (Maria), New York City, NY, Paul (Nina), Fargo, ND, and Michael (Jan), Eagan, MN; three daughters: Phyllis (Ray) Hoversten, Onamia, MN, Mary Francis (Peter) Budge, Minneapolis, MN, and Sharon Ann (Tom) Davidson, Princeton, NJ; and daughter-in-law, Avonne Gravel, Long Beach, CA. She also leaves 20 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren as well as many other relatives and friends.

A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, March 20, 2004, at 11:30 a.m. in the Mavis Whiting Chapel at Bethany Homes, Fargo. Her remains will be buried in a private ceremony at Holy Cross cemetery in Onamia, MN.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the DFL Party of Fargo, or to Bethany Homes.

Lee, Dennis

Dennis Lee, age 64, Detroit Lakes, MN, formerly of Kindred, ND, died Saturday, March 13, 2004, at his home.

Dennis Wilbur Lee was born July 11, 1939, in Fargo, ND, the son of Tallef and Beatrice (Sorlie) Lee.

He grew up and attended school in Kindred, graduating from high school in 1957. He married Shirley Haberman on September 10, 1960. They lived on the family farm until 1991, when he moved to Fargo.

In 1992 he moved to the Detroit Lakes area. Most recently he was employed by Lutheran Social Services and J.B. Realty.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, and spending time with family and friends at the lake. He was a member of the Fargo Elks, El-Zagel Shrine, Kindred Wildlife, and was on the advisory board of the ND State Game & Fish Department.

He is survived by two daughters, Idette (Judd) Graham, Grand Forks, ND, and Denise (Mike) Heglie, Walcott, ND; one son, Lyndon (Julie) Lee, Kindred, ND; two brothers, Eugene (Delores), Bigfork, MT, and Rodney, Lake Park, MN; two sisters, Altha Johnson, Kindred, and Dallas (Rodger) Christiansen, Fargo; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Tallef and Beatrice Lee.

Visitation: Thursday from 4-8 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m., in Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo.

Funeral: Friday at 11 a.m. in Kindred Lutheran Church, Kindred.

Burial: Perhus cemetery, Kindred.

Arrangements by Fredrikson Funeral Chapel, Kindred.

Eugene N. Jackman “Jack”
Fargo, North Dakota

Eugene “Jack”, age 82, of 405 25th Avenue North, died on Sunday, March 14, 2004, at Bethany Homes in Fargo.

Eugene was born on January 25, 1922, in Forman, North Dakota, the eldest son of Charles and Eva Jackman. He grew up in this area and attended school. Gene left home at an early age and worked for the Civilian Conservation Corp during the depression, at which time his family moved to the Verndale and Nimrod area where they farmed. Gene proudly served his country during WWII in the United States Army, Air Force, and Navy. After his discharge he returned to the Fargo area and was united in marriage to Opal “Carol” Matzke on May 18, 1947. They made their home in Fargo where they raised their family. Gene started his employment with the Great Northern Railway retiring after 45 years of service with the Burlington Northern, Dilworth, Minnesota, as Assistant General Car Forman. After retirement Jack and Carol traveled and shared many happy memories. Carol passed away on October 4, 1998. Jack and Carol were charter members of Hope Lutheran Church, in Fargo.

Jack was a loving, caring husband and father who was very proud of his entire family; especially his grandchildren, and loved spending time with them. He has been a resident of Bethany Homes since 2001.

Jack is survived by his loving family; his son, Robert (Karen) Jackman of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota; and his daughters, Barbara (David) Busch of Woodstock, Georgia; and Becky (Terry) Ganje of Fargo; and his grandchildren, Todd Jackman; Tammy Busch-Ballou; David Busch; Tricia Jackman; Charles Busch; Timothy Jackman; Thomas Ganje; and Tracey Ganje. and his great grandchildren, Jordan and Tony Ballou; and Ashley Busch. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters, Mary Massey; Charles (Annette); John Howard (Marlene); Paul (Joyce); Homer (Helen); Patsy Roe; and William (Marge) Jackman; all of the state of Oregon; and many nieces and nephews.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Opal “Carol”; and his grandson, Tony Busch.
