Vera V. Engesetter, 92
Died: Wednesday, July 20, 2005, in Innovis Health Systems, Fargo, ND, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Vera Viola (Brantner) Engesetter passed away July 20, 2005 at Innovis Hospital in Fargo, ND, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Vera was born on November 20, 1912 to Charles U. and Mary Brantner on the family farm in Viding Township, Clay County, MN. On October 28, 1933 Vera married Arthur (Art) Engesetter in the Concordia Church parsonage. Vera and Art had one son, Walter.

Vera lived her entire life in Clay County. She was an expert seamstress and made many quilts, dolls and teddy bears and much more. If she set her mind to it, she could do just about anything and joked often that the only thing she didn't do on the farm was climb the windmill. She taught crafts in Senior Centers throughout Clay County for many years and also was the Activity Director at the Americana Nursing Home in Moorhead for a number of years.

Vera was a member of Concordia Church for 72 years and belonged to the Ladies Aid. She was also a Life Member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Vera is survived by her son Walter; her special friend, Lois Jensen; two sisters, Minnie Graff, Kindred, ND, Irma Larsen, Phoenix, AZ; one brother Charles (Casey) Brantner, Moorhead, MN; and numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Hospice of the Red River Valley, Fargo, ND.

Agnes R. Nielsen, 85
Died: Tuesday, January 03, 2006, in ManorCare Health Systems, Fargo, ND.
Agnes R. Nielsen, 85, Manorcare Nursing Home, Fargo, ND, died on Tuesday, January 3, 2006, in the nursing home.

Agnes Ruby Severson was born on June 12, 1920, in Dalton, MN, to Andrew and Anna Severson. She grew up and attended school there. She worked in Minneapolis and Elbow Lake, MN, and Fargo, ND, before her marriage. She married Julius W. "Bill" Nielsen on August 30, 1947, in Dalton, MN, and they made their home in north Moorhead, MN. Bill died on May 16, 1989. Agnes moved to Manorcare in November of 2001.

Agnes is survived by two daughters, Patricia Nielsen, Maple Grove, MN, and Ginger (Ken) Schneider, Fargo, ND; four grandchildren, Stacy, Stephanie and Jay Nielsen, and Kristofer Schneider; a daughter-in-law, Val Nielsen, Moorhead, MN; a sister-in-law, Esther Nelson, Sebeka, MN. She was preceded in death by her son, Jerry Nielsen, on July 28, 2003; and three siblings, Margaret Miles, Celia Thomason and Alfred Severson.

Agnes's family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at Manorcare for the excellent care that they provided her.

Ronald M. "Ron" Anderson, 70
Died: Thursday, February 23, 2006, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, ND.
Ron Anderson, 70, of West Fargo, formally, Moorhead, died Thursday, February 23, 2006, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, ND.

Ronald Martin Anderson was born on July 2, 1935 to Martin and Frances (Zekus) Anderson in Cleveland, OH. He grew up and attended school in Cleveland, graduating from high school in 1953. After graduating high school, Ron joined the United States Marines. He served during the Korean War Conflict as a Radio Telegram Operator from 1953 until he was honorably discharged as a rank of Sergeant in 1957. Before moving to Moorhead, MN in 1970 he worked in the reinforced plastics industry in Ohio, Indiana and Wisconsin. On February 5, 1972, he married Margie Albertson in Hawley, MN. The couple made their home in Moorhead until moving to West Fargo in Sept of 2005. Ron worked as a Machine Operator for Sheyenne Dakota Inc. until his retirement in 2000. Ron enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren Kelly, Alex and Max, playing golf, reading books and working crossword puzzles in his spare time.

He is survived by his wife, Margie, West Fargo, ND; one son, Brett (Cathy) Anderson, Ruskin, FL; five daughters, Amy (Ralph) Grommesh, West Fargo, ND, Lori (Pat Thorson) Wetzel, Kindred, ND; Ricki (Leroy) Kautz, Knoxville, TN, Joni Anderson, Ruskin, FL, Erin (Warren) Lee, Lutz, FL; one brother, Russell (Stephanie) Anderson, Grand Junction, CO; two sisters, Ruth (Jim Benes) Scharf, Wickliff, OH, Roberta (James) Ballie, Las Vegas, NV; eight grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Robert and Richard Anderson.

Bette J. Eberhardt, 85
Died: Thursday, September 01, 2005, in Villa Maria Nursing Home, Fargo, ND.
Bette J. Hendrickson was born June 15, 1920 in Fargo, ND to Edwin and Anna (Lindquist) Hendrickson. She grew up and graduated from high school in Fargo, ND. On June 25, 1940 she married Russell A. Eberhardt in Fargo ND, this is where they also made their home. Her husband, Russell preceded her in death on March 2, 1991.

Bette was a stay at home mom, caring for her children, then being a foster parent for many years for over 100 plus babies and later for hard to place children.

She is survived by her children; Bonnie Phillips, McGregor, MN, Karen (Nolan) Maier, Minnewaukan, ND, Barbara (Veran) Kapaun, Fargo, ND, Larry Eberhardt and Jerry Eberhardt, Fargo, ND; two foster daughters, Sheri and Christine, Fargo, ND; one sister, Florence Skodje, Dilworth, MN; 10 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Bernice T. Meyer, 90
Died: Sunday, September 18, 2005, in Villa Maria Nursing Home, Fargo, ND.
Bernice T. Meyer died Sunday, September 18, 2005 at the Villa Maria in Fargo, surrounded by her family.

Bernice was born June 9, 1915 to Tosten "Tom" and Aagodt "Olga" (Nerby) Johnson near Robinson, North Dakota. She was the oldest of twelve children. She spent her childhood years growing up on her parent's farm northeast of Robinson, North Dakota. She attended rural school and graduated from the 8th grade on June 1, 1931. Soon after graduation she took a job doing full time house work for $2.50 a week. She married Earl Newton on October 13, 1940 at Bowden, North Dakota. Together they farmed and raised a family of five children 9 miles north of Tuttle, ND until May 1956 when they moved to Hawley, MN. Bernice became a widow when Earl died in an accident at the young age of 47. She was left to raise five children alone. Bernice did some babysitting for a local school instructor until she was hired as a seamstress at St. Luke's Hospital in Fargo. She worked there for nine years. Bernice was noted for her beautiful quilts and creative hand-stitching work. She presented every member of her family with quilts, as well as others in the community. She belonged to the Hawley Garden Club and devoted many hours helping to beautify Hawley with flowers which were one of her great joys in life. Bernice won many awards and ribbons for her incredible work.

Bernice met Weston Meyer and they were married on February 23, 1968. Together they did some traveling and enjoyed bowling on a Hawley team for several years. Weston passed away on January 28, 1993.

In later years, after her children were grown, Bernice traveled quite extensively throughout the U.S. and Europe. On some of her trips, her adult children accompanied her. Her travels brought her much pleasure and were enjoyed to the fullest, just as she lived every day of her life.

She loved music and dancing. To the family's delight, she danced at her 90th birthday party. She was always stoic in times of disappointment. She was ever optimistic. She was a devoted mother, much loved by her family.

Bernice is survived by two daughters, two sons, ten grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Elaine Giere, Saskatoon, Canada, Harold (Betsy) Newton, Chicago, IL, Evie (Chuck) Ulven, Moorhead, MN, and Alan (Joyce) Newton, Hawley, MN; five brothers and sisters, Marvin (Gail) Nerby, Steele, ND, Arlene Dewald, Dawson, ND, Beulah (Earl) Harrington, Robinson, ND, Harold (Genevieve) Nerby, Dawson, ND, and Hazel O'Neal, Fallon, Nevada.

The family would like to gratefully acknowledge all the loving, devoted care which Bernice received at both the Hawley Manor and more recently the Villa Maria in Fargo, and Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Hazel A. Bloom, 78

Hazel A. Bloom, 78 of Fargo, died Sunday, December 18, 2005, in Manor Care Health Systems, Fargo, ND.

Hazel A. Bloom was born on July 22, 1927 at Hickson, ND. She was the daughter to Andrew and Helen (Backlund) Bloom. She attended school at Hickson 113 and graduated from Moorhead High School. She moved to Fargo with her parents in 1949. Hazel worked a various places, Model Laundry, Skarphol, Molding and American Linen until she retired.

She is survived by one nephew, Paul Bloom; three nieces, Dorothy Lowe, Linda Gust, and Susan Byth; and a very special friend, Leander Reitan.

She is preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and one sister-in-law, Una Bloom.

Jacob B. "Jack" Smith, 81
Died: Thursday, December 22, 2005, in Bethany Homes, Fargo, ND.
Jack was born on October 4, 1924 in Baker, MT to Jacob and Pauline Smith. He grew up on the family farm and attended school in Mott, ND.

After he graduated from high school in 1943, he entered the US Army Infantry for a short period of time before being honorably discharged for medical reasons. From 1943-1945, he worked for West Construction Co. in Whitehorse, Canada and in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska for the Department of Defense. Jack attended trade school in Wahpeton, ND to become a Linotype Operator.

He married May Swift on June 24th, 1950 in Glen Ullin, ND. He worked in the printing trade for the Fargo Forum, Becker County Record, Kaye's Printing and numerous other newspapers in the region from 1945 to the mid 60s.

Early in their marriage, Jack and May lived in West Fargo, ND, then moving to Detroit Lakes, MN in 1956 where they owned and operated the Sun Lite Grocery on Little Floyd Lake.

After working in the printing trade, he worked for Detroit Township as an independent Maintenance Supervisor until his retirement. For many years he owned and operated a roto tilling business.

Jack was a MN DNR fire warden for almost 40 years, was active in AARP and was a Minnesota Ombudsman for nursing home residents.

Jack was a perfectionist and believed in leaving property in better condition than he found it. Jack and May remodeled three homes and built two new homes in the Detroit Lakes area.

Jack's hobbies included gardening, traveling, writing, studying nutrition, and maintaining his prize Massey Ferguson 35 tractor. He was a prolific writer and had many articles published in Prime Life. Jack had an inquisitive mind and always felt he could learn and share something with everyone he met. Jack made several trips to Germany and Spain to visit his mother's family.

Jack and May moved to Moorhead in 2005 after selling their home in rural Detroit Lakes, MN.

Jack was a long time member of the United Church of God in Fargo, ND.

Jack is survived by his wife, May; two daughters, Laurie Laney, Pasadena, CA; Jill (Jeff) Berg, Barnesville, MN; one son, Garner Smith, Beijing, China; two grandchildren, Sheena Berg, Moorhead, and Sasha Berg, UND.

He is preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mary Ganser.
