Robert G. Burnside, 70
Died: Monday, November 22, 2004, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, ND.
Robert Gene Burnside, 70, of Hawley, Minnesota, died Monday, November 22, 2004, at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, North Dakota.

Robert was born May 6, 1934 in Hawley, Minnesota to Robert and Julia (Mortenson) Burnside. He grew up and attended school in Hawley. Following his schooling he worked for several farms in the area. He worked for Industrial Builders for 2 years, then moved to Detroit, Michigan, where he worked for Denton Construction Company for 2 years, working on the beginning phases of the Eisenhower Freeway system. He returned to Hawley, and worked for FM Asphalt until his retirement in 1978.

Robert was an avid hunter, fisherman and trapper. He also built an exact replica of the Viking ship at the Heritage Hjemkomst Interpretive Center.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, John, Gordon, Harvey, Roy, and Lloyal, and one son, Robert, Jr.

He is survived by one son, Audie (LaVonne) Burnside, Hawley, MN; one sister, Ione (Harley) Erickson, Fargo, ND; one grandchild, Nathan, and three step grandchildren, Joe, Jessica and Jordan; several nieces and nephews.

Hazel V. Tall, 84
Died: Thursday, September 9, 2004, in MeritCare Hosiptal, Fargo, ND.
Hazel V. Tall, 84, of Hawley, Minnesota, died Thursday, September 9, 2004, at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota.

Hazel Engen was born July 23, 1920 in Skree Township, Clay County, Minnesota to Thor H. and Kristie (Aasen) Engen. She grew up there and attended rural country school. She married Rudolph Tall on March 27, 1946 at Lake Park, Minnesota. Following their marriage they farmed near Hawley. Rudolph died May 15, 1982. Since July 2003, Hazel has been a resident of the Viking Manor Nursing Home in Ulen, Minnesota.

Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, 2 infant sons, 3 brothers, and 1 sister.

Hazel is survived by a sister-in-law, Jane Engen, Hawley, MN; and nieces and nephews.

Leila H. Baumann, 75
Died: Thursday, March 31, 2005, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, ND.
Leila was born on July 11, 1929 to John and Adolfina Kitzman in Elgin, IL. She grew up and attended school in the Fessenden, ND area, where her parents farmed. As a young girl, Leila and her sister "Kitty" often sang together, including a live performance on WLS radio in Chicago in 1942.

Leila was married to Harold Baumann on December 15, 1948, in Minot, ND and she worked as a waitress there for a time. Harold and Leila lived in numerous communities in MN and ND as they raised their family.

Leila's family brought such joy to her life, and she always loved family gatherings and celebrations. As the family grew, she spent precious time with grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Leila enjoyed sewing, quilting, and made many gifts for her family over the years. Leila had a love of nature, especially birds and flowers, and enjoyed an occasional fishing trip with her family. Leila was a devoted mother, grandmother, and loved to cook and bake for her family. Her memory will live on forever.

Leila is survived by her eight children; Michael (Roberta) Baumann, Thief River Falls, MN, Ronald (Deb) Baumann, Deer Creek, MN, Paulette (Tim) Schreiber, Glyndon, MN, Jerome (Wendy) Baumann, West Fargo, ND, Stan (Dianna) Baumann, Moorhead, MN, Debra (Steve) Olafson, Menagha, MN, Laurie (Tremayne) Ebertowski, Grand Forks, ND, and Rob (Diane) Baumann, Nevis, MN; 14 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Also, surviving are her husband Harold Baumann, West Fargo, ND, one brother, Herbert Kitzman, Jamestown, ND and several nieces and nephews, and sister in law Dorothy Kitzman, West Fargo, ND.

Ronald J. Tangen, 43
Died: Monday, March 14, 2005, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, ND.
Ronald Joseph Tangen, 43, of Fargo, died Monday, March 14, 2005, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, ND.

Ron was born on May 5, 1961 to Oberlin and Florence (Roche-Tangen) Bauer in Fargo, ND. He grew up and attended school in Georgetown and Moorhead, MN. Ron was married to Mary Schiele in 1985; together they had two children, Joey and Matthew. Ron was married to Terri Hanson in 1996 and together had Casey. Ron worked at Corwin Automotive for many years. He currently worked in the paint department at Case IH (Case New Holland) and for Imports Plus. He had a vast love for the outdoors which included camping and hunting with his family and friends. Ron was also a fan of country music. He will be dearly missed by his friends and family.

Ron is survived by his mother, Florence Bauer, step-father, Leo Bauer; two brothers, Raymond, Fargo, ND, Charles (Pam) Tangen, Fargo, ND; one step-brother, Jerry Bauer, Fargo, ND; two sisters, Marcia (Wayne) Schneider, Selz, ND, Janet (Jack) Sodnak, Moorhead, MN; one step-sister, Karla (Joseph) Maertens, West Fargo, ND; three sons, Joey, Matt, and Casey Tangen, Fargo, ND; six nieces, Sierra, Sheyenne, and Santana Schneider, April and Melissa Maertens, and Josie Holzer; five nephews, Cody and Colten Schneider, Logan Sodnak, James Maertens, and Kyler Holzer. Ron is also survived by his special friend, Stacy Blomquist and her four children.

Ron is preceded in death by his father and his grandparents.

Bernice A. Binford, 79
Died: Sunday, March 13, 2005, in her home.
Bernice A. Binford, age 79, died peacefully in her sleep at home on March 13, 2005.

Bernice was born on March 21, 1925 to Bernard and Ragna (Larson) Gunderson. She grew up in the rural Kragnes and Georgetown area. She graduated from Moorhead High School in 1943. Bernice went on to graduate from Moorhead State Teacher's College where she met Howard Binford. They were married in 1950. Bernice began her teaching career in Glyndon, MN, and then later went to teach at the Ben Franklin Junior High School in Fargo. Her teaching years and former students were something she treasured throughout her life. Bernice was a member of Beta Chi sorority while in college and continued to meet with them monthly. She had done so on the day of her death. Bernice was also a member of Fargo Retired Teachers, Cass County Retired Teachers and the North Dakota association. Bernice enjoyed writing and was the editor of the North Dakota Retired Teachers Association Newsletter. In this group she had received the Silver Apple Award and the Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus Meritorious Service Award. Bernice was a life long active member of North Buffalo Lutheran Church.

Bernice was regularly seen having breakfast and reading the paper at the Moorhead Village Inn, a practice she and Howard had done for many years and she continued to do. She enjoyed keeping up her yard and mowing with the John Deere tractor mower in the summer months.

Howard's journalism skills and his Howard Binford's Guide were an important part of her life. She too enjoyed writing and did so on many subjects, putting memories of life into stories and poems.

Bernice is survived by her sister, Dorothy (Jim) Powers, Fargo, ND; and many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews and two aunts, Gertrude Van Nice and Goldie Halvorson. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Howard Binford.

Bernice was a very social person and loved people, either entertaining in her home or being out with them. She will be missed.

Albert E. Eidem, 96
Died: Thursday, March 31, 2005, in Innovis Health Systems, Fargo, ND.
Albert E. Eidem, 96, Moorhead, MN, died Thursday, March 31, 2005 at Innovis Hospital, Fargo, ND.

Albert Eidem was born February 14, 1909 to Casper and Annette (Wang) Eidem in Twin Valley, MN. He grew up and attended school in Twin Valley, MN. In 1945 he married Frances Jacobson. Albert worked as a mechanic in the Fargo Moorhead area.

He is survived by one son, Allan Eidem, Brookings, SD; three daughters, Joyce (Gordon) Jones, Fargo, ND, Jan (Ron) Stickland, West Fargo, ND, and Judy (Ron) Keller, Brookings, SD; and many grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by two brothers, Elmer and Bill Eidem and three sisters, Ella Lien, Olga Johnson and Florence Geterman.

Merriam L. Moen, 84
Died: Thursday, February 03, 2005, in Villa Maria Nursing Home, Fargo, ND.
Merriam L. Moen, 84, of Moorhead died on February 3, 2005 at Villa Maria, Fargo, ND under Hospice care.

Merriam was born on December 4, 1920 in Dalton, MN. He grew up and attended school in Dalton.

He worked for the CCC (Civilian Conservation Core) and for local farmers in the Dalton area.

He was drafted into the army in 1942. He was a P.O.W. Following his discharge from the army he worked for area farmers and started with Great Northern Railroad in 1948 and retired in 1981. He was married to DeLoris A. Jorgens on June 22, 1951 in Fergus Falls, MN.

He is survived by two sons, Merlyn Moen, Fargo, ND, Dale Moen, Moorhead, MN; two daughters, Debra Dodd, Moorhead, MN, Bonnie (Joe) Stenger, Moorhead, MN; one brother Dennis, one sister Ethel; six grandchildren and Duke the family dog.

He was preceded in death by his wife, DeLoris, and his parents.

Martin H. Tonn, 83
Died: Tuesday, February 08, 2005, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, ND.
Martin was born on April 11, 1921 to William and Dora Tonn. He grew up and attended school in Davenport, Iowa. Following high school he obtained his B.A. and Master's degree from the State University of Iowa, Ames, Iowa. He also obtained his PhD from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa.

Martin served in the US Army and was stationed in Italy during World War II.

On June 7, 1952, he married Phyllis Ann Godown. They lived in Carroll, Iowa for five years before moving to Moorhead in 1957.

He was a Professor and also the Director of Special Education at Moorhead State University until his retirement.

Martin also authored two children's books and numerous professional articles.

He is survived by two daughters, Laura Beth (Irwin) Forseth, Chesapeake Beach, MD, Martha Tonn, Skokie, IL; five sisters, Gertrude, Lydia, Ruth, Charlotte, Marjorie; and three grandchildren, Erik, Kirsten, and David.

He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; one brother, Reinhardt; three sisters, Eleanor, Helen, Irene; one grandson, Joshua.

In Lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to Habitat for Humanity.
