Clarence Fried

Clarence Albert Fried, 67, of Baker passed away January 2, 2003, at the Fallon Medical Complex in Baker, following a long illness. He was born December 16, 1935 at the family farm north of Plevna, the youngest son of Edward and Lydia (Ehret) Fried. Clarence grew up and attended schools in the Plevna area. He entered the U.S. Army in December 1957 and was honorably discharged March 1959. Clarence was a 35 year member of the American Legion, Post 35 in Baker. He married Bonnie Rost, January 8, 1961 at Butte, MT. To this union two sons were born, William Scott and Cory Leon. In 1961, Clarence worked for the Wright Tree Service in Bozeman. He then returned to Baker where he began his career as a carpenter. He worked for Herbst Construction, Zachman Construction, A-Frame Lumber and Fullerton Lumber. In 1991, Clarence started his own contracting business with his son Scott until he retired due to ill health. He was very dedicated to his family. In his spare time he enjoyed hunting and fishing. Clarence is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Leon in 1958 and Elmer in 1997. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie; two sons: Scott and Cory both of Baker; two sister-in-laws: Norita Fried of Plevna and Jackie Mitchell of Idaho Falls, ID; and three nieces and two nephews.
A Prayer Service will be held on Monday, Jan. 6, at 7 PM at the Stevenson Funeral Home in Baker. Funeral Services will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 7, at 11 AM at the American Lutheran Church in Baker. A luncheon will be served following the services. Burial will then take place at the Peace Lutheran Cemetery in Plevna with Military Rites presiding.

Douglas A. Duffield

Douglas Anthony Duffield, 53, of Marmarth, ND passed away on Saturday, January 4th, 2003 in Denver, CO. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, January 10, 2003, 10:00 am in the St. John's Catholic Church, Baker with Father Thomas Tobin celebrating. Burial will be in the Fertile Prairie Cemetery east of Baker. Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel of Baker is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation is Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a rosary at 7:00 pm in Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel in Baker.

Douglas was born on March 27, 1949, the son of Merritt and Bonita (Braun) Duffield in Baker, Montana. He grew up east of Baker on the family ranch and attended the Fertile Prairie Country School, Baker Schools and graduated from the St. Mary's Catholic High School in New England, ND in 1968. Doug was married to Joy Marie Graham on June 29, 1969 and to this union two beautiful children were born, Teena Faye and Bradley Allen. Doug worked as a welder for many years, first in Baker for Cates Welding then in Gillette, WY where he started his own business Doug's Welding & Pipeline. In 1978, they bought a ranch and moved south of Marmarth where he also continued his pipeline construction business in the surrounding area. In 1998, he started a boring business called the "Pokin & Hopin" with his son, Brad. They did bores in the four state area based out of Durango, CO.

Doug was a hard working husband, a devoted father, a loving grandfather and a dear friend to many. He was a confident and caring father and took pride in his children’s accomplishments however large or small. Doug was looked up to and respected by both of them and they were proud to call him Dad. His confidence and reassurance at work and at play will be missed immensely. He loved his work and gave it his all so that his family could have everything they needed and more.

Aside from his black cowboy hat, snakeskin boots, and Adolph his trademarks included hard work and friendly conversation. Doug was an outstanding welder and a jack of all trades. He would never turn down a chance to sing karaoke or just sing songs with family and friends.

Survivors include, his wife, Joy, Marmarth, ND; a daughter, Teena (Tony) Holecek and their children, Daulton & Darian, Wolf Point, MT; a son, Brad (Heidi) Duffield and their children, Justyce & Caleb of Marmarth; his mother, Bonita Duffield, Baker; four brothers, Dennis (Paula) Duffield, Bismarck, Merritt Jr. "Micky" (Therese) Duffield, Rapid City, SD, Willie Duffield, Baker and John (Kaye) Duffield, Rapid City; two sisters, Sharon (Joe) Kovacich, Anaconda, MT and Linda (Dave) Knudtson of Watford City, ND and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Merritt Sr., two brothers, Keith and Kenny; two sisters, Pamela Rose and Amelia Rose Duffield Ruggles.

Connie J. Askin

Connie Jim Askin, 54, of Baker passed away January 7, 2003, at his home north of Baker. He was born May 24, 1948 in Miles City, Montana, the youngest child of C. L. and Shirley Belle (Ruenholl) Askin. Connie grew up and attended schools in the Ismay and Baker area. He entered the U.S. Coast Guard in 1967 and was honorably discharged in 1970. Connie married Marilyn Hargin on November 8, 1969 in Reno, NV. To this union two daughters were born, Jami Lynn and Jody Lou. They lived in Longview, WA where Connie worked for Caffel Bros. Connie and Marilyn later divorced. In 1973, he went to Lower Columbia College in Longview graduating in 1976. He married and later divorced Karen Barrow. Connie enjoyed his years as a radio broadcaster in West Yellowstone and in Baker. He went to school in 1998 at NW Technical Institute in Portland, OR. Connie retired in 1999 due to his disability, he moved back to Baker to be with his family following an automobile accident. He was very dedicated to his family. In his spare time he enjoyed riding horses and his younger years liked riding saddle broncos and riding bulls. He also enjoyed both water skiing and snow skiing. Being the baby of the family, his siblings and children will account for his sense of determination. He had a strong entrepreneurial spirit within him as well. His many inventive ideas included the “Robo Roper”. Connie also shared many fond memories with his bands over the years. He is preceded in death by his parents C.L. “Gramps” & Shirley Belle Askin. He is survived by his daughters Jody and her fiancée Ken Coulson of Kelso, WA and Jamie Lynn and her husband Tim Perkins of Longview, WA and three grandchildren Joshua, Haylie and Chase; one brother and his wife, Rodney & Marilyn Askin of Baker; three sisters Sharon and her husband Roy Ferrel of Baker; Shirley Barrett of Morristown, AZ; Peggy and her husband Rex Tanner of Missoula, MT; former wife and mother of his children, Marilyn Askin of Longview; former wife, Karen Askin and daughters Amy and Molly and their families; and numerous nieces and nephews. A Prayer Service will be held on Sunday, Jan. 12, at 7 PM at the Stevenson Funeral Home in Baker. Funeral Services will take place on Monday, Jan. 13, at 2 PM at the Chapel of Stevenson Funeral Home in Baker. A luncheon will be served following the services. Burial will then take place at the Askin Family Cemetery north of Baker with Military Rites.

Grant Lofthus

Funeral Services for Grant S. Lofthus, 94, of Battle Ground WA, formerly, of Halliday, ND, are Tuesday, January 14, 2003, 10:00 a.m. at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Halliday with Pastor Harry Theiss, officiating. Interment will follow at Halliday Cemetery.

Visitation is Monday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel.

Grant passed away on January 7, 2003, at Battle Ground, Washington.

Grant, a son of Gilman and Sigrid (Lee) Lofthus, was born April 5, 1910, in Halliday, ND. He spent his life farming near Halliday. Grant was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church. He enjoyed the sports of baseball and basketball. Grant was fond of sweets, taking long walks and teasing. However his traits of honesty, kindness and generosity will carry forward with his memory.

Grant is survived by one niece, Joyce Repp of Vancouver, WA; two grandnephews, Curtis Kerr of LaCenter, WA and Brent Kerr of Battle Ground, WA; along with several great-grandnephews and great-grandnieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and two brothers.

Mike Gaab

Mass of Christian Burial for Mike Gaab, 84, of Dickinson, is Thursday, January 16, 2003, 2:00 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Dennis Schafer, celebrating. Interment will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

Visitation is Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a rosary/prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel.

Mike passed away Monday, January 13, 2003, at St. Alexius Medical Center, Bismarck.

Mike was born on January 24, 1918 in Yucca, North Dakota the son of George and Elizabeth (Himmelspacke) Gaab. As a young child he moved with his parents to their farm near Richardton, ND. He grew up and attended schools at the Taylor Country School. Mike was married to Regina Zentner on October 29, 1940 and to this union five children were born. Mike worked for Walter Hamann before moving to Dickinson were he worked with Bill Hamann. Mike helped with the construction of the Western Livestock Sale Yards. Mike married Eleanor Scholz Frenzel on October 3, 1979. During the years Mike was a field representative for the yard buying livestock through out Montana and North Dakota. After semi-retiring in 1982 Mike continued to buy hogs and livestock for various feeders for several years.

He was an avid card player and enjoyed getting together with friends. He also enjoyed traveling, gardening, attending auction sales and taking care of his chickens, cats and dogs. He had an extensive collection of old model cars, tractors and trucks.

Mike was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Club Aerie #2328 and the St. Pius Verein.

Survivors include, his wife, Eleanor, Dickinson; a son, James (Anita) Gaab, Gladstone; two daughters, Kathleen (Herbert) Billman, Dickinson, and Linda (Layton) Olstad, Sentinel Butte, ND; step-son, Harlen (Jean) Frenzel, Williston, ND; four step-daughters, LaVerne (Tim) Frakes, Walla Walla, WA, Janel Deines, Glendive, MT, Annette (Richard) Rime, Glendive, MT, and Cindy (Dean) Dassinger, Bismarck, ND; two brothers, Julius Gaab, and Clemens (Rachael) both of Richardton; six sisters, Frances Weiler, Spokane, WA, Cecelia Garza, Renton, WA, Minnie Schulz, Mandan, ND, Agnes (Nick) Rehling, Richardton, Pauline (Alois) Gion, Regent, ND, Irene (Melvin) Geck, Glen Ullin, ND; two sister-in-laws, Marge Gaab, Park City, MT, Pauline Gaab, Richardton; 22 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

His parents, wife, Regina, two infant sons and three brothers, Anton, Leonard and John, preceded him in death.

Maria Duletsky

Funeral Mass for Maria Agnes Duletsky, 94, of Williston, formerly of Belfield are Saturday, January 4, 2003, 10:00 a.m. at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church with Father Shannon Lucht celebrating. Interment will follow at St. Bernard’s Cemetery, Belfield.

Visitation is Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a rosary being said at 7:00 p.m. at Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel.

Maria died on December 30, 2002, at Bethel Lutheran Home, Williston.

Maria Agnes, daughter of John and Anna (Malkowski) Basaraba, was born September 8, 1908, in Gorham, ND, where she grew up and attended country schools. Maria married Peter Duletsky in 1931. They moved to a farm south of Belfield where they raised their four children. In 1947, they moved into Belfield while still farming. In 1978, she moved to Arizona to be closer to her daughter and in 1996, Maria moved to Williston and lived with her son, Marvin. Due to failing health she made her home in Bethel Lutheran Home for the last four years. Maria enjoyed crocheting, gardening, babysitting the neighbor kids. She was a past member St. Bernard’s Catholic Church & the Ladies Circle.

She is survived by her sons, Victor (Ann) Duletsky of Sebastopol, CA, Marvin (Gertrude) Duletsky of Williston, Stanley (Pat) Duletsky of Billings, MT; daughter, Stella (Wayne) Glass of Ash fork, AZ; 14 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren and sisters, Kathern Palanuk of Bismarck, Pearl Wallace of Oregon.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter, parents, a brother, Matt Basaraba and one grandson, Todd.

Raymond Kilen

Mass of Christian Burial for Raymond A. Kilen, 76, of Dickinson is Friday, January 24, 2003, 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Father Austin Vetter, celebrating. Interment will be at a later date at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. Dickinson Veterans Drill Team will provide military rites.

Visitation is Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel.

Raymond passed away on Tuesday, January 21, 2003, at his home.

Raymond, a son of Carl & Frances (Drury) Kilen was born November 25, 1926, in Curlew, ND. He grew up and attended schools in the Almont, Curlew and Sims areas. Ray began working at an early age with the Northern Pacific Railroad as section hand. He entered the US Army on March 6, 1945, serving until November 26, 1946. August 3, 1953, Raymond married Anna Marie Armbrust at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Raymond returned to Mandan where he worked as a fireman for the Northern Pacific Railroad. In 1965, the family moved to Dickinson and have made their home here since. In the early 60’s, Raymond was promoted to Engineer and continued working for Northern Pacific and Burlington Northern until his retirement in 1988. He was a member of the Elks, Eagles, VFW, American Legion, Forty & Eight, St. Anthony Club, Odd fellows, Sons of Norway, Friday Nite Gang and St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. He enjoyed as well as being a very accomplished musician with the ability to play many instruments. Not only was Raymond an avid fisherman but also, he loved teaching his grandchildren the sport. He found enjoyment in playing cards, rodeos, baseball, woodworking, spending the winter months in Arizona and restoring his 46 Oldsmobile.

Raymond will be greatly missed by his wife, Anna Marie of Dickinson, two daughters, RayAnn Kilen of Dickinson, Sandra (Eldon) Rohde of Halliday; grandchildren, Emily (Melvin) Albert of Fargo, Elizabeth, Luke, Carl, Riley and Tanner Rohde; five sisters, Mavis Voracek of Fargo, Florence Nagle of Mandan, Grace Smith of Almont, Etheleen (Burton) Hoovestal of New Salem, Charlotte (Edward) Thiel of Almont; three brothers, Virgil (Lorraine) Kilen of New Salem, Thornton (Caroline) Kilen of Mandan, Tharen (Mary) Kilen of Mandan and one sister-in-law, Helen Kilen of Mandan. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Norman Kilen.

Kathryn Ferderer

Mass of Christian Burial for Kathryn Ferderer, 88, of Richardton are Saturday, January 25, 2003, 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Richardton with Father Brian Wangler, OSB, celebrating. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Richardton

Visitation is Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel, 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a rosary being said at 8:00 p.m. St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Richardton.

Kathryn passed away on Wednesday, January 22, 2003, at Richardton Health Center.

Kathryn, a daughter of Gregor & Veronica (Lantz) Messer was born on July 17, 1914 in rural Grant County. She attended St. Joseph’s County School while growing up in Grant County. After the death of her father at an early age she worked on the family farm helping her mother. On February 14, 1939 Kathryn married John R. Ferderer in St. John’s Catholic Church in New Leipzig, ND. They began a life long journey of farming and raising their five children. In 1977, they retired from farming and moved into Richardton where they have made their home since. Kathryn enjoyed sewing, gardening, dancing and being a member in St. Mary’s Catholic Church and St. Mary’s Christian Mothers.

Kathryn is survived by her children Marionn Ferderer, Corollee (Dwight) Hardmeyer, Lynda (Skip) Williams, all of Richardton, ND and James (Sheila) Ferderer of New Leipzig, ND; five grandchildren, Darrin (Wanda) Hardmeyer of Richardton, Troy (Sylvia) Metzger of Steinheim, Germany, Tod Metzger of Dothan, AL, Beth Guthrie of Pensacola, FL, Heather (Eric) Inman of Milwaukee, WI; three great grandchildren, Kaare Hardmeyer of Richardton, Tiffani and Amber Inman of Milwaukee, WI. She was preceded in death by parents, husband, daughter, Jonnes, three brothers, and five sisters.
