John 'Aaron' Burney

Funeral services for John “Aaron” Burney, 48, of Dickinson, will be 11 a.m., Friday, July 23, at Stevenson Funeral Home in Dickinson with Rev. Scott McKirdy officiating. Interment will be at a later date in Brandon, Fla.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., Friday, July 23, at Stevenson Funeral Home in Dickinson.

Aaron passed away Saturday, July 17, at the Western Horizons Care Center in Hettinger.

John Aaron Burney was born on Oct. 4, 1961, the son of Henry Aaron and Jean (Carter) Burney in Tampa, Fla.

Aaron grew up in the Tampa area where he attended school and graduated. Following his graduation, he worked with his dad in a small engine repair business until he entered truck driving college in 1986.

In 1987, he graduated from the Orange Park College with a degree as a professional semi tractor trailer driver. Aaron traveled throughout the United States as an over-the-road truck driver. Due to failing health, Aaron was forced into retirement.

In June 2009, Aaron moved to Dickinson, to live with his Aunt Julia. While in Dickinson, he enjoyed spending time with his cousins Jacey, Zachary, Hannah and Grace. He also developed a friendship with Tim and Mary Kay Ralston of Bismarck. Aaron enjoyed spending time with his family whenever possible.

Aaron is survived by his aunt, Julia Vogel, Dickinson; his cousins, DeAnna (Mike) Keller, Dickinson, Julie (Jim) Jablonsky, Dickinson, and Roy Dale (JiYing) Spencer, Gilbert, Ariz.; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins in Florida.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Jean Burney; paternal and maternal grandparents; one aunt; and two cousins.

Ricky Szathmary

Ricky R. Szathmary, 24, Dickinson, died at his home on Friday, July 16, 2010.

Ricky’s funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 21, at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson, with Rev. Michael Wolters officiating. Interment will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Dickinson. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., at Ladbury Funeral Service.

Arrangements are with Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson.

Kathryn Heck

Funeral Mass for Kathryn Heck, 94, formerly of Belfield, will be 10 a.m., Friday, July 23, at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Belfield with Father Jim Braaten celebrating. Burial will follow at the St. Bernard’s Cemetery in Belfield.

Visitation will be 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, July 22, at Stevenson Funeral Home in Dickinson with a rosary and vigil service at 7 p.m. with Deacon Bob Stockert officiating.

Kathryn passed away Sunday, July 18, at St. Benedict’s Health Center in Dickinson.

Kathryn was born on Aug. 30, 1915, to Stephen and Celestine (Urlacher) Walter in rural Dunn County, near Hirschville. After her father’s death when she was 6, she began working for many families until her marriage.

Kathryn loved to dance and met David Heck at a dance. They were married Jan. 19, 1937, at St. Anthony Catholic Church northwest of Dickinson.

They began farming in Slope County, and in 1942, purchased a farm in the Gaylord community in Stark County. Kathryn and David retired to Belfield in 1972. Kathryn moved to Dickinson in 1998 and became a resident of St. Benedict’s Health Center in Dickinson in 2007.

Kathryn thoroughly loved having “company” and had a gift for making everyone feel welcome. Music and laughter were always encouraged in her home. She enjoyed sewing every day and completed hundreds of quilts and other crafts through her years. She was a member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, St. Theresa’s Guild and was an RSVP volunteer.

Kathryn is survived by her children, Tom (Selma) Heck, Scott City, Kan., Leo (Kathy) Heck, Avon, Minn., Leonard (Betty) Heck, Belfield, Clementine Wyman, Hazen and Josie (Bob) Stockert, Dave (Bernie) Heck, and Rita (Joe) Plegge, all of Dickinson; 19 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Magdalene Knopik, Dickinson; one brother, Michael Walter, San Diego; and brother-in-law, Anton Heck, Belfield.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, David, in 1991; her son-in-law, Stanley Wyman; one great-grandchild; two brothers, Joe (Anna) Walter and George (Katie) Walter; three sisters, Eva (Andrew) Hushka, Monica (John) Brown, and Elizabeth (Adam) Heiser; two sisters in infancy, Rose and Rose Marie; sisters- and brothers-in-law, Berna Jean Walter, John Knopik, Rose and Frank Frank, Frank and Julia Heck, Val and Beatrice Heck, Matt and Nola Heck, and Monica Heck.

Christ Dolechek

Christ J. Dolechek, 77, Dickinson, died Saturday, July 17, 2010, at his home.

Christ’s Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9:30 a.m. today, July 20, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Dickinson, with Fr. Keith Streifel as the celebrant.

Military honors will follow the Mass and be provided by the Dickinson Honors Team. Interment will take place at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.

Christ J. Dolechek, the son of Valentine and Anna (Huschka) Dolechek, was born Aug. 26, 1932, on the family farm which he continued to live his entire life.

Christ was educated southeast of Dickinson and attended Frenzel Country School and completed the eigth grade. On Nov. 13, 1952 he joined the U.S. Army and served honorably during the Korean Conflict and as a corporal was discharged on Oct. 22, 1954. While in the military he received the National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the Korean Service Medal.

Christ was united in marriage to Leona Twardoski on Sept. 17, 1957, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, and together they enjoyed 52 wonderful years. Through this union four children were born Randy, Ricky, Andrea and Robby.

Christ worked construction right out of the army and also farmed. He and Leona ran a farm and dairy, and many city folks enjoyed his visits to town delivering farm fresh cream, eggs and his specialty fresh chickens. Christ retired from farming in 1991 due to a disability, but they remained on the farm and he helped with whatever he could.

Christ belonged to the St. Anthony Club, German-Hungarian, AmVets and St. Pius Verein. He enjoyed social gatherings, playing cards, tinkering on machinery, outdoor activities, was a big Minnesota Twins fan, but most of all he especially cherished the time spent with his grandkids.

Christ is survived by his wife, Leona; their four children, Randy, Ricky (Lynn), Andrea and Robby (Dawn), all of Dickinson; nine grandchildren, Matthew, Kayla and Mark Dolechek, Britany, Christopher and Alyssa Thernes, Jordan, Jaymin and Annabelle Dolechek; one great-grandson, Rye Thernes Mathern; three siblings, Johanna Messer, Dickinson, Ralph (Katie) Dolechek, Dickinson, Pauline (David) Sadowsky; and sister-in-law, Rose Mary Dolechek, New England.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, George; his infant twin; and a brother-in-law, Val T. Messer.

Joshua D. Dowhaniuk

Joshua D. Dowhaniuk, 30, Dickinson, died Saturday, July 17 in Dickinson as the result of an accidental drowning.

Joshua’s funeral service will be at 10 a.m., Friday, July 23 at Ladbury Funeral Service with speaker Travis Smith presiding. Visitation will be on Thursday from noon to 7 p.m., and on Friday from 8 a.m. to service time at Ladbury Funeral Service.

Joshua David Dowhaniuk was born March 1, 1980 in Dickinson, the son of Gary and Debbie (Engesser) Dowhaniuk. He was raised in Dickinson having attended Roosevelt Elementary and graduating from Dickinson High School in 1998. Josh went on to attend NDSCS in Wahpeton.

Josh worked as a sales rep for Heartland Homes, for AFLAC and Metro Plains Management, but most recently has been working in the oil fields as a motorhand.

Josh met Jenn in February of 2007 and they became engaged in November of 2009.

As a child he loved taking things apart and reassembling them. As a teenager he loved skateboarding with his cousins. He enjoyed hiking, fishing and camping with his family and friends. His relaxation was spending time with his dogs.

He was always and continued to be the typical but loving older brother who spent many memorable moments with his two sisters, Nicole and Meghan, making grass forts, ditch salads, jumping on the trampoline (training them well). He always made sure to call his parents at least every other day just to tell them “I love you.” He was always willing to lend a helping hand for his aunts, uncles and family friends.

Josh is survived by his parents, Gary and Debbie, Dickinson; his sisters, Nicole (fiancé-Glenn Hennings) Dowhaniuk, Wahpeton, and Meghan (fiancé-Darrick Heinert) Rapid City, S.D.; his fiancée, Jenn Anderson Kostelecky; Jenn’s son, Jayden; grandmother, Clara Dowhaniuk, Belfield; several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who loved him.

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Alex Dowhaniuk and Gordon Engesser; grandmother, Iris Engesser; and uncles, Kenny Erickson and Brian Donner. Arrangements are with Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson.
