Anna Ulschak
Mass and Christian burial for Anna Ulschak, 86, of Dickinson will be Saturday, February 15, 2003, 10:00 a.m. at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Dickinson with Father Dennis Schafer celebrating. Burial will follow in St. Elizabeth’s Cemetery in Lefor, ND.
Visitation is Thursday, February 13, 2003, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel with a rosary being said at 7:00 p.m. followed by a vigil led by Deacon Ralph Stockert.
Anna passed away on Monday, February 10, 2003 at the St. Benedict’s Health Center, Dickinson.
Anna, a daughter of Nick and Elizabeth (Wehner) Ulschak, was born on July 1, 1916 on the family farmstead in Lefor, ND. She was raised in Lefor and attended country school moving to Dickinson in 1934 and working for Sims Café. Anna’s days were filled with joy from the time shared with her sister, Betty while living together in Dickinson. She enjoyed time spend visiting and the accompaniment of her family.
She is survived by her three sisters, Marie (Edward) Kuswa of Hesperia, CA, Elizabeth Ulschak of Dickinson, Katherine Smiley of Rushville, IN; one brother, Curtis (Betty) Ulschak of Kansas City, MO.
Her parents, one brother, Frank Ulschak, two sisters, Eva Landy and Lena Vogel preceded her in death.

Mary Kudrna
Mary passed away on Thursday, February 13, 2003 at the St. Benedict’s Health Center, Dickinson surrounded by her entire immediate family.
Mary, a daughter of Joe and Mary (Samek) Kostelecky, was born on May 11, 1904, in Symferopol, Russia. She came to the U.S. in 1908 with her parents and lived on a farm 11 miles south west of Dickinson. She married Frank Kudrna on July 14, 1924. She then moved to a farm 3 miles south of South Heart, where she lived until 1961 when they moved to Dickinson and she had lived there since. Into her marriage with Frank, 13 children were born. Mary enjoyed gardening; cooking- everyone loved her chicken noodle soup, baking kolaches, dancing, and old time music. Mary was a most loving and caring mother to her big family. She will always be loved and missed by her surviving family.
She is survived by her five sons; Laudie (Dorothy) Kudrna, Dickinson, ND, Don (Millie) Kudrna, South Heart, ND, Raymond (Shirley) Kudrna, Overland Park, KS, Wayne (Rosalie) Kudrna, Dickinson, ND, Robert (Jeanette) Kudrna, Hettinger, ND; five daughters, Margaret (Frank) Fendrick, Billings, MT, Dorothy (Andrew) Ficek, Dickinson, ND, Eleanore (Vern) Badinger, Spokane, WA, Darlene (Bob) Betchner, Mandan, ND, and Delores (Darrold) Raab, Dickinson, ND; one daughter-in-law, Josephine (Gilbert) Kudrna, Phoenix, AZ; three step-sons, Frank Kudrna, Casper WY, Adolph Kudrna and Edward Kudrna, both of Dickinson, ND; two step-daughters, Rose (Pete) Privratsky and Minnie (Ed) Pirkl, both of Dickinson, ND; three sisters, Alice (Ed) Semerad, Spokane, WA, Emma (Victor) Semerad, Dickinson, ND, and Anna Urbanec, Dickinson, ND, forty-two grandchildren, 72 great-grandchildren and numerous step-grandchildren.
Her husband, Frank, parents, one sister, three brothers, three sons, four grandchildren, one great grandchild, one step-son and one step-daughter preceded her in death.

Sister Gemma Hartinger
Sister Hartinger passed away on Sunday, March 16, 2003 at the St. Vincent’s Care Center in Bismarck.
Sister Gemma was born on January 3, 1917 and baptized as Frances Mary, was the sixth child of seven born to George and Mary (VanAckeren) Hartinger in Glen Ullin. She attended Sacred Heart Grade School and Glen Ullin Public High School. In 1939, after a year at St. Benedict’s College in St. Joseph, Minnesota, she entered Sacred Heart Monastery, then located at Garrison, and made her first monastic profession in 1941.
After earning her teaching credentials through Mount Marty College in Yankton, South Dakota, she began her long and devoted service as an elementary school teacher. She taught at St. Leo’s and Little Flower Schools in Minot, St. Nicholas School in Garrison, St. Mary’s School in Malta, MT and St. Vincent’s School in Mott. From 1967 to 1975 she was assigned to St. Benedict’s Academy in Bogota, Colombia, which was then a mission of Sacred Heart Monastery. In addition to her teaching, Sr. Gemma served on various committees and from 1964 to 1967 was subprioess of the Monastery. In 1991 she retired to the monastery where she compiled community photo albums and used her calligraphy and artistic skills for creating posters, signs, and greeting cards. She credited her brothers with giving her a lifelong interest in sports, and she enjoyed cheering her favorite teams from the television room. However, her greatest satisfaction and pride came in remembering students and stories from her nearly 50 years of teaching.
Sr. Gemma is survived by her brother Joe Hartinger of Glen Ullin, her sister, Catherine Folliard of Sonoma, CA, numerous nephews and nieces, as well as the Sisters of Sacred Heart Monastery.
Her parents, who both died before she was 14 years old, her brothers, Ted, Frank, Lawrence, and sister Anna, preceded her in death.

Monica M. Reichert
Monica M. Reichert, 86, formerly of Dickinson, passed away Monday, March 31, 2003 at the Missouri Slope Care in Bismarck.

Sister Eileen Dietz
Sister Eileen Dietz, OSB, of Sacred Heart Monastery, Richardton, died at St. Vincent’s Care Center in Bismarck on April 1, 2003. A wake service will be held at the monastery chapel on Thursday, April 3, at 7:00 p.m. MT, with visitation all afternoon. The funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, April 4. She will be buried in the Sacred Heart Monastery cemetery. Father David Wolf, of Assumption Abbey will preside at the Eucharist, with Sister Marie Hunkler, Prioress, presiding at the monastic funeral rites.
Sister Eileen was the youngest of ten children born on December 3, 1914, to Mathias and Helen (Wagner) Dietz who farmed south of Sentinel Butte. She was baptized as Agnes Rose. A childhood disease resulted in a serious hearing impairment. After graduating from eighth grade, she worked for several years, including two years at St. John’s Hospital in Helena, Montana. She entered Sacred Heart Convent in Minot in 1944 and made her first monastic profession in 1946. She was assigned to the kitchen and laundry at St. Luke’s Hospital in Crosby and Sacred Heart Convent in Minot until 1955, then to the laundry at St. Vincent’s Care Center in Bismarck until 1967. When the new monastery was built at Richardton in 1967, her skills as laundress were needed and appreciated there for the next three decades. In addition, through her planning and physical labor, several flowerbeds began enhancing the monastery grounds with a variety of blooms and bushes. Her flower bouquets not only decorated the chapel but also won many ribbons at local festivals. Scrabble, pinochle, and solitaire were her favorite winter pastimes. At night when fresh laundry was folded, flowers watered, and card games won, she would retire to the chapel for late night vigils. Due to failing health, she entered St. Vincent’s Care Center in February, 2001.
Sr. Eileen is survived by one brother Edmund and wife Ethel of Sentinel Butte, sister-in-law Frances Dietz of Sentinel Butte, numerous nephews and nieces, and the sisters of Sacred Heart Monastery.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Anna Mary Dietz, Catherine Barthel, Elizabeth Lardy, Mary Kyle, and Agatha Nistler, and brothers Joseph, Aloysius, and Herman.

Louie Braun
Mass of Christian Burial for Louie Braun, 77, of Dickinson, is Tuesday, April 22, 2003, 10:00 a.m. at Queen of Peace Parish with Father David Morman, celebrating. Interment will be at 3:00 p.m. (CT) at North Dakota Veterans Cemetery. Military rites provided by Dickinson Veterans Drill Team.
Visitation is Monday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a rosary at 7:00 p.m. led by St. Pius Verein followed by a vigil service at Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel.
Louie passed away on Thursday, April 17, 2003, at his home.
Louie was born September 4, 1925, in Schefield, ND to Peter and Bridget (Roeder) Braun. He was raised in the Schefield area, attending school and graduating from High School in 1943. Louie then enlisted with the Merchant Marines in 1945 serving for three years. Following he served in US Army from 1948 to 1950, his tour of duty was in the Pacific area in the Army Transport Division. During his leave he was married to Martha Pribyl on May 9, 1949, in Dickinson. Together the couple moved to his grandfather and father’s homestead south of Dickinson. Louie and Martha moved to Dickinson in 1972, and Louie began working for Heiser Oil delivering propane. In April of 1981, the couple moved to Lake Havasu, Arizona for fourteen years and Louie would still return home to farm during the summers. In 1995, they returned to Dickinson and have made their home here since. Louie found enjoyment in fishing, bowling, playing cards at St. Anthony’s Club and traveling. He was a member of the St. Anthony’s Club, Knights of Columbus and a past member of St. Pius Verein and German Hungarian Club.
Louie is survived by his wife, Martha of Dickinson, his mother, Bridget of Dickinson; three sons, Tim of Salt Lake City, UT, Pete of Dickinson, Dean of Mesa, AZ; five daughters, Brenda (Mike) Obritsch of Billings, MT, Nancy (Doug) Charles of Mount Sterling, KT, LuAnn (Steve) Roberts of McMinnville, OR, Marla Braun of Dickinson, Kimberly Braun of Grafton, ND; eight grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; four sisters, Mildred Heinle of Dickinson, Florence Voris of Lake Havasu, AZ, Sr. Mary Eugene of Mankato, MN and LaVern Rios of Hungton Beach, CA.
He was preceded in death by his father, Peter, three brothers, Henry, Eugene and Ernie.

George A. Koffler
Mass of Christian Burial for George A. Koffler, 88, of Dickinson is Monday, December 2, 2002, 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with Father Dennis Schafer, celebrating. Interment will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
Visitation is Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a rosary at 8:00p.m. followed by a vigil service at Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel with Deacon Ralph Stockert. Visitation will then continue on Monday with a rosary being led by George Keller at 9:00 am
George passed away on Saturday, November 30, 2002, at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
George the son of Joseph and Anna Dietz Koffler was born on December 12, 1913 in Scranton, ND. He moved with his parents at the age of 3 to South of Dickinson were he attended country schools. He continued to work at the farm until he was married to Anna Frenzel on June 12, 1934. George worked at the Dickinson Meat Cannery while farming Southwest of Dickinson. Together George and Anna purchased a farm Southeast of Dickinson were they farmed for over twenty years. They moved into Dickinson where George worked for Stark County, Decker Implement, General Investment and later as a maintenance man for SAX Motors. George retired in 1995.
He enjoyed going back out to the farm to help his son who still operates his farm yet today. He also enjoyed attending cattle sales and going for rides to see the countryside. George always listened to old time music whenever possible. He especially loved and enjoyed his grand and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include, son, Arnonld (Marge), Dickinson; a son-in-law, Chris Meier, Glen Ullin brother, Matt (Ruth) Koffler, Mandan; two sisters, Rose Frenzel, Dickinson and Mary Plummer, Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren: Monte, Marty and Glen Koffler, Wallace and Joan Berger and Galen Meier; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Jeannette Meier, three sisters, Tillie Whitehead, Annie Branham and Barbara Obrigewitch

Elsie Schmaltz
Elsie, daughter of Anton and Clara (Ridl) Urbanec, was born on December 30, 1926, in Dickinson, ND. While growing up she attended St. Patrick’s, Versippi and Lehigh schools in Dickinson, graduating in 1944. She worked for Cloverdale Creamery. On February 13, 1946, Elsie married Stanley Schmaltz in Dickinson. They moved to a farm southeast of Dickinson and were there for seven years. Then they moved north of Richardton. Here they farmed grain and operated a grade A dairy from 1954 through 1969. At this time they moved back to Dickinson and purchased The Dickinson Motel from Elsie’s parents and operated it for 23 years before retiring. They continued making Dickinson their home. Elsie was a member of Christian Mothers in Richardton, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and St. Anthony Club. Elsie enjoyed traveling, especially bus tours. She loved to sew and display her crafts in shows around the state. Elsie especially loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Elsie passed away on Thursday, December 5, 2002, at St. Luke’s Home.
Elsie will be greatly missed by her husband, Stanley, of Dickinson, their children, David (Charlene) Schmaltz of Mandan, Norma (Jim) Myers of Grand Forks, Rita (Ron) Keller of Radcliff, KY, six grandchildren and five great grandchildren, Keith (Wendy) Schmaltz and their children Shayla, Sheradyn, and Braxtyn; Staci (Tim) Berg and their children, Jacob and Hunter; Melinda Keller, Amanda Keller, Jessica Myers, and Tyler Myers, two sisters, Wiletta (Paul) Stoltz of Dickinson, ND and Carmen Faller of Dickinson, ND. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Gary C. Haugen
Gary died on Sunday, December 15, 2002, at Oakes Good Samaritan, Oakes, ND.
Gary was born February 18, 1945 in Turtle Lake, ND. He was the son of Walter C. and Elsie (Boyko) Haugen. While growing up Gary attended the Butte Country School and the Fullerton Public School thru 10th grade. He attended the Sheyenne River Academy in Harvey, ND were he graduated in 1963. On June 19, 1966 he was married to Jane Bauer in Ellendale, ND. He worked for Carlson Construction for several years. In the late 60’s he began working at the St. Benedicts Nursing Home where, he became the maintenance supervisor. On November 19, 1980, he was married to Ardis Mellmer in Las Vegas, NV. Due to failing health Gary retired in 1993. Gary was a member of the Dickinson Retread Motorcycle Club, Harley Owners Group of North Dakota, and an active member of The Seventh Day Adventist. Church. He enjoyed taking many trips throughout the lower 48 states, Canada, and Alaska, which accounts for thousands of photos and memories. Gary enjoyed his woodworking shop and sharing his creations with everyone. He especially loved and enjoyed his family, grandchildren and biker friends. Gary will be fondly remembered as “The Hogster.”
He is survived by his mother Elsie (Stanley) Krupsky of Fullerton, ND; one daughter, Leota Rick of Dickinson, ND; one brother; Bruce Nelson of Alexandra, MN; six sisters; Deanna Haugen of Fullerton, ND, Connie Teske of Fullerton, ND, Bonnie Eaton of Fullerton, ND, Nancy Krupsky of Mankota, MN, Lyn Cavalieri of Las Vegas, NV, and Kim Haugen of Rend, NV and two grandchildren, TaShael and Tanis.
He was preceded in death by his father, Walter Haugen, his son, Gary C. Haugen Jr., one sister, Caroline Russell and his step mother, Lil Haugen.
