Donnell Nelson
TURTLE LAKE -- Donnell C. Nelson, 65, Turtle Lake, died Dec. 17, 1996, in the Turtle Lake hospital after a heroic battle with cancer. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Turtle Lake, with burial in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan. Military rites will be by Turtle Lake American Legion.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at Goetz Funeral Home, Turtle Lake, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Donnell C. Nelson was born June 24, 1931, at Turtle Lake, to Marcus and Edith (Peterson) Nelson. He attended rural and Turtle Lake city school through his junior year. He graduated from Mechanics Arts High School in St. Paul, Minn. in 1949. He worked various jobs in North Dakota, including the John Volk Wholesale Co. in Williston. On Dec. 29, 1951, he married Virginia M. Jaskowski at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Williston. He was drafted and entered the U.S. Air Force, Feb. 25, 1952. He retired from the Air Force in June 1972. During his 20 years in the service, they were stationed in seven states and the Phillipine Islands. In June 1972, they returned to Turtle Lake where he opened Nelson's Dental Lab, which he operated until 1996 when he became ill.

He was a member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church, Turtle Lake American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Anamoose. Don enjoyed operating machinery, doing yard work and taking care of their home.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Blanche and Clarence Okerson, Coleharbor, Frances and Wally Bastian, Yuba City, Calif., Eunice and Milton Bradford, Bismarck, and Maureen and Bob Hochsprung, Turtle Lake; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Merlin and Violet Nelson, Bismarck, and Neil and Mary Ann Nelson, St. Paul, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

Harley Hoppe
GARRISON -- Harley W. Hoppe, 75, Garrison, died Dec. 17, 1996, in his home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Garrison, with the Rev. Dick Hendrickson officiating. Burial will be in Underwood Cemetery, with military rites by Hugh P. Minehan American Legion Post No. 49 of Garrison.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon Friday at Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Harley was born July 25, 1921, at Arlington, Minn., to Fred and Bertha (Buffington) Hoppe. As a child he moved to Underwood, where he was raised and graduated from Underwood High School. He married Rosemary Stengel in Montana in the early 1940s. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942-1945, and was stationed in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. After his discharge, he returned to Underwood for one year and then moved to Puyallup, Wash. He moved to Edmonds, Wash., several years later, and then to Whidbey Island, Wash. Rosemary died in 1979. While on the West Coast, he had been an appliance repairman for many years and later owned and operated a service station prior to his semi-retirement in 1980. He returned to Underwood and helped his brother, Norman, farm. He married Freda Fast, Sept. 10, 1983, at Garrison, where he lived until his death.

He is survived by his wife, Freda; two daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Jim Menard, Pensacola, Fla., and Jeanne and Jon Scott, Everett, Wash.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bob and Vivienne, Edmonds, Wash., and Ron and Susan, Sedro Wooley, Wash.; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two stepsons and one stepdaughter-in-law, Harold and Darlene Aldinger, Bismarck, and Wes Aldinger, Dallas; one stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Betty and Arthur Schreiner, Coleharbor; two sisters, Eunice Sigurdson, Underwood, and Bea Lewson, Arlington, Wash.; and one brother and sister-in-law, Norman and Martha, Underwood.

Pallbearers will be Monty Fast, Larry Fast, Bud Stengel, Paul Sigurdson, Arthur Schreiner and Harold Aldinger.

Pearl Hoffman
Pearl Jochium Hoffman, 65, died Dec. 16, 1996. Services will be at noon Friday at St. Madeleine Sophie, Bellevue, Wash.

Pearl was born Oct. 1, 1931, at Flasher. She moved to the Bellevue area in 1954. For the last few years, she lived in both Fall City, Wash., and Chandler, Ariz. She especially enjoyed making ceramics and traveling.

She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her mother, Jennie Jochim, Mandan; two sisters, Barbra Sites, Portland, Ore., and Marilyn Bernhadt, Torrence, Calif.; her husband, Edwin Hoffman, Chandler; two sons, Robert and Bill, both of Bellevue; two daughters, Naomi Wark and Patricia Chase, both of Bellevue; and 10 grandchildren.

The family prefers memorials to American Heart Association.

Nordine Johnson
WILLISTON -- Nordine Johnson, 65, Williston, died Dec. 16, 1996, in the Williston hospital. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Williston, with burial in Riverview Cemetery, Williston.

He is survived by his wife, Marcella; one son, Milo, Ray; one daughter, Holly Johnson, Fargo; and one sister, Nina McKinney, Cumming, Iowa. (Everson Funeral Home, Williston)

Regina Tietz
DICKINSON -- Regina Tietz, 83, Dickinson, died Dec. 16, 1996, in a Dickinson nursing home. Services will be at 2 p.m. MST Friday at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, Glendive, Mont., with burial in Dawson Memorial Cemetery, Glendive.

She is survived by one son, LeRoy, Monroe, Mich.; three daughters, Wilma Hartze, Dickinson, Darlene Miller, Eudora, Kan., and Shirley Mansfield, Billings, Mont.; three brothers, Richard Hein, Oregon, and Edwin Hein and Daniel Hein, both of California; and four sisters, Christine Lepp, Colorado, and Lillian Roemmick, Bertha Strobel and Alice Dobler, all of California. Anna Telehey
VELVA -- Anna Telehey, 97, Velva, died Dec. 16, 1996, in a Velva nursing home. Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Seventh Day Adventist Church, Minot, with burial in Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.

She is survived by three daughters, Mae Draffehn, Creede, Colo., Deloris Dullum, Bismarck, and Marion Lee, Plaza; one sister, Stacie Simpshaw, Glasgow, Mont. (Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot)

Alma Berg
KILLDEER -- Alma W. Berg, 76, Killdeer, died Dec. 16, 1996, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. MST Friday at Normana Lutheran Church, Dunn Center, with burial in Peace Lutheran Cemetery, rural Dunn Center.

She is survived by two daughters, Wilma Koski, Yakima, Wash., and Wanda Berg, Battle Lake, Minn.; two sons, Wes, Hazen, and Arley, Dickinson; one brother, Jack Stohler, Chula Vista, Calif.; and one sister, Emma Tysver, Absorakee, Mont. (Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson)

Walter Enderle
RICHARDTON -- Walter G. Enderle, 60, Richardton, died Dec. 16, 1996, at his home. Services will be at 10 a.m. MST Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Richardton, with burial in the church cemetery.

He is survived by four brothers, Joe, Richardton, John, Jamestown, Werner, Helena, Mont., and Herman, Connollsville, Pa.; two sisters, Ramona Kalmbach, Portland, Ore., and Ruth Brown, Richardton. (Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson)

Robert Stenberg
Services for Robert B. Stenberg, 68, Lake Metigoshe, were held Nov. 25 at Metigoshe Christian Center. He died Nov. 21, 1996, in his home. Burial was in Salem Lutheran Cemetery, rural Bottineau. The Rev. Carol Wendel officiated at the service. The soloist, Mary Huber, was accompanied by Elwood Tooke. Zelma Brandvold was the organist.

Casketbearers were Calvin Reamer, Bob Stenberg, Christ Tofteland, Scott Tofteland, Lynn Engelstad and Ken Flemming.

Robert Bratton Stenberg, a son of Samuel and Marjorie (Bratton) Stenberg, was born Nov. 27, 1927, at Rugby. He was the grandson of Mary Estelle Bratton and Luther Hawkins Bratton, pioneer newspaper publisher of Rugby.

He attended grade school and high school at Thronton Fractional Township School in Calumet City, Ill., where he graduated in 1945. Thereafter, he enrolled at University of North Dakota until his enlistment in the U.S. Army, Oct. 5, 1946. He served with the U.S. Eighth Army at the 155th Station Hospital in Yokohama, Japan. He received his honorable discharge with the rank of staff sergeant on April 14, 1948.

He then returned to North Dakota and began a career in the oil industry that spanned 30 years. From 1950 to 1953 he worked for Kaufman and Gay, oil brokers of Minot and Billings, Mont. From 1953 to 1960 he was the senior landman for the Sohio Petroleum Co., working in Casper, Wyo., and Minot. From 1960-1983 he was self-employed in the exploration for oil and gas. He was married to Audrey Tofteland. For many years he had been a year-round resident of Lake Metigoshe.

He was a member of Metigoshe Lutheran church. He was also a member of Elks Lodge in Minot, American Association of Petroleum Landmen, and Dakota Chapter of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. He was an avid outdoor sportsman all of his life. He had a great love for fishing, hunting, bird-watching and traveling with friends and family.

He is survived by his wife, Audrey; one son, Robert Jr., Bismarck; two daughters, Marjorie Ann Hamilton and Laura Jean Stenberg, both of Oklahoma City, Okla.; two stepsons, Chris Tofteland, Minot, and Scott Tofteland, West Bend, Wis.; one stepdaughter, Lisa Tofteland, Fargo; four grandchildren; one sister, Nancy Geisen, Appleton, Wis.; one aunt, Mary Catharine Hornstein, Rugby; and two cousins, Daniel Hornstein, Minot, and MaryLynne Knutson, Arcadia, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; his parents; and an uncle, Walter Bratton. (Nero Funeral Home, Bottineau)

Dwain Draeger
NAPOLEON -- Dwain A. Draeger, 71, Napoleon, died Nov. 29, 1996, in the Wishek hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Napoleon American Legion Hall, Napoleon, with burial in Zion Reformed Cemetery, rural Streeter.

He is survived by his wife, Elsie; and three sons, Keith, Lake Isabel, Darrell, Sierra Vista, Ariz., and Terry, Anchorage, Alaska. (Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Napoleon)

Alvina Buchmann
GOODRICH -- Alvina Buchmann, 63, Goodrich, died Nov. 27, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Grace Lutheran Church, McClusky, with burial at 2 p.m. Monday in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will be 1-7 p.m. today at Hertz Funeral Home, McClusky.

Alvina was born Nov. 11, 1933, on the family farm near Regan, to Edward and Lillian (Hochhalter) Schafer. She grew up and attended school in the Regan area. She married Emil Buchmann on June 26, 1952, at Wilton. They lived and farmed near Baldwin. They moved to a farm near Goodrich in 1955. They moved into Goodrich in 1961. In 1965 she began working for Goodrich Public School as a cook. She retired in 1994.

She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, a 38-year member of Goodrich American Legion Auxiliary, and a member of Denhoff Homemakers Club. She enjoyed many types of crafts.

She is survived by her husband, Emil; one daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Michael Sheets, Jamestown; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmy and Wanda, and Lyle and Julie, all of Bowman; eight grandchildren; her mother, Lillian Schafer, Bismarck; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Esther and Harold Hemming, Billings, Mont., and Marjory and Kenneth Konschak, Goodrich; one brother, Alvin, Sacramento, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her father; one sister, Yvonne, who died at birth; and one granddaughter, Rita Buchmann.

Matthew Tschida
Matthew James Tschida, 21, Winter Haven, Fla., formerly of Bismarck, died Nov. 30, 1996, in his home. Arrangements are pending at CrispCoon Funeral Home, Winter Haven.

Emil Ochsner
Emil Ochsner, 83, Napoleon, died Nov. 30, 1996, in the Napoleon nursing home. Arrangements are pending at Boelter Funeral Home.

Mary Becker
MCHENRY -- Mary E. Becker, 91, Sauk Rapids, Minn., formerly of McHenry, died Nov. 26, 1996, in a Sauk Rapids nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter's and St. Paul's Catholic Church, McHenry, with burial in the church cemetery.

She is survived by two sons, Eugene, McHenry, and Edward, Mapelton, Minn.; two daughters, Marjorie Yanke, St. Cloud, Minn., and Betty Smith, McHenry; and one sister, Betty Opp, Fountain, Colo. (Evans Funeral Home, Carrington)

Nancy Rosebud

He is survived by his wife, Martha; four daughters, Janis Brockel, Selby, Diann Fenske, Aberdeen, Kathy Seymour, Pollock, and Kristy Byers, Hartley, Iowa; two brothers, Herman, Mound City, and Walter, Oregon; and two sisters, Esther Bettger, St. Louis Park, Minn., and Rose Wentz. Marion Hildebrant
Marion Frances (Jones) Hildebrant, 81, Golden Valley Manor, Beach, died Nov. 28, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at United Community Church, Beach, with the Rev. Stephen Holmes officiating.

Marion Jones was born April 16, 1915, at Antler, to Earl and Emma (Hippe) Jones. She graduated from Beach High School in 1935.

She worked as a telephone switchboard operator until her marriage to George Leslie Hildebrant on Sept. 7, 1943, in Rossville, Ga. They farmed near Beach until George's death in 1954. Marion worked at the Westgate Motel and later as a nurses aide at the Beach hospital.

The Golden Valley Manor had been home to Marion the past five years, where she loved sharing jokes and stories with the employees and residents.

She is survived by one son, Robert, Beach; one daughter and son-in-law, Dixie and Larry Schulz, Mandan; one sister, Madeline Bishop, Beach; one brother, Ralph Jones, Lakewood, Calif.; five grandchildren, Twyla and Jordan Hildebrant, Beach, Erin, Kember and Ryan Schulz, Mandan.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George; her parents, Earl and Emma; her brother, Robert, Raymond, Ronnie and Riley ``Casey"; her daughter-in-law, Yvonne; and granddaughters, Sondra and Amie. (Bismarck Funeral Home)

Marlys Hochhalter
Marlys Jean Hochhalter, 66, 1405 E. Ave. B, died Nov. 28, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Faith Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Joel Sherer officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will be 2-9 p.m. today, and 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday at Eastgate Funeral Service, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Marlys Elkins was born Jan. 27, 1930, in Regan, the daughter of Cecil and Anna (Wold) Elkins. She graduated from Regan High School. She married Eugene R. Hochhalter on April 29, 1950. She worked as an administrative clerk at North Dakota Tax Department for 30 years, retiring Aug. 31, 1990. Marlys was a very caring and loving mother, wife and grandmother. She was loved and will be missed by those who survive her, including her husband, Eugene; three sons and daughters-in-law, David and Betty, Detroit Lakes, Minn., Terry and Darcy, Mandan, and Wayne and Carol, Bismarck; six grandchildren, Dawn, Travis, Corey, Jennifer, Eric and Kari; one sister, Beverly Mehlhoff, Bismarck; and special friends, Doris and Roy Berg.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Tom; and one sister, Deloris.

The family wishes to thank Medcenter One, especially the nurses in the dialysis unit.
