ZAP -- Hilda Bauer, 77, Zap, died April 27, 1997, at her home following a long illness. Arrangements are pending with Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah.

Raymond Pepple
STEELE -- Raymond Pepple, 80, Steele, died April 26, 1997, in Steele. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Steele. Further arrangements are pending with Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck.

Christine Jangula
Christine Jangula, 95, Mandan, died April 28, 1997, in the Mandan nursing home. Services will be at 1-30 p.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan. Burial will be in St. Anthony Church Cemetery, Linton.

Visitation will begin at noon Wednesday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a Christian Mothers rosary will be said at 4 p.m. today and a parish vigil will be said at 7:30 tonight.

Christine Baumgartner was born March 27, 1902, in Odessa, Russia. In 1904 she came with her parents, Ben and Theresa (Kupser) Baumgartner, to the United States. They settled in the Linton area where she was raised and educated. In November 1920, she married Joseph Jangula. She worked at St. Anthony Parish, Linton, as a housekeeper and cook from 1956 to 1962. She then moved to Liberty Heights in 1968 until 1989 when her health failed. She has been a resident at Medcenter One Care Center since 1990.

She had a great love for family, loved playing cards and sewing crafts. She did volunteer work at Mandan Villa, Easter Seals Society, Grandparents Program in the Mandan School System, Retired Senior Volunteer Program and Mandan Golden Age Club.

She is survived by her son, Henry, Portland, Ore.; her daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Ken Erlandson, Mandan; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joseph, who died in 1956; and one son, Louis; five brothers; and one sister.

Raymond Pepple
STEELE -- Raymond Pepple, 80, Steele, died April 26, 1997, at his farm east of Steele. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Steele, with the Rev. Sharon Kapsch officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, north of Steele, with military rites by American Legion Post, Steele.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today, and from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Eastgate Steele Memorial Chapel, and will continue one hour before services at the church.

Raymond Pepple was born April 23, 1917, at Denhoff, the son of Andrew and Pauline (Grabofsky) Pepple, where he was raised and educated. On Jan. 17, 1942, he married Edith Fairchild in Los Angeles. In 1942, he joined the U.S. Army and served in the Army Air Corps with the 356th Service Squadron, 42nd Service Group stationed in Atcham, England. He was a mechanic for the B-17 bombers during World War II.

On March 15, 1945, he was discharged and returned to Tuttle to join Edith. He owned the Tuttle Conoco Co-op until 1954 when they moved to Bismarck. In 1959, they moved to Steele and Ray established Pepple Machine Co., and farmed until he retired in 1992. Ray enjoyed many winters in Mesa, Ariz. Ray was active in several organizations, he was a life member of Bismarck Elks, the 40 et 8, the American Legion, VFW and Amvets.

He is survived by his three daughters and sons-in-law, Raynette and Larry Pawlitschek, Redmond, Wash., Annette and Perry Bartholomaus, Steele, and Lannette and Gregg Hendrickson, Bloomington, Minn.; four grandchildren, Garrett and Terry Pawlitschek, and Amanda and Jill Bartholomaus; three sisters, Betty Lynch, Cheney, Wash., Alma Fuller, Spokane, Wash., and Ruth Kowalski, Chicago; three stepbrothers, Herbert Poppke, David, Poppke and Walter Poppke; and five stepsisters, Martha Wentz, Pauline Purdy, Leone Dodge, Irene Carter and Esther Charlebois.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith; his parents; two brothers, Frederick and Andrew Pepple; one sister, Lydia Hanson; and two stepbrothers, John and Theodore Poppke.

Walter Keator
Walter F. Keator, 88, Baptist Home, Bismarck, died April 26, 1997, in the nursing home. Services will be at 2 p.m. today at the Baptist Home Chapel, with the Rev. Clyde Leimberer officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to noon today at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, and will continue one hour prior to services at the nursing home.

Walter was born Dec. 8, 1908, in Ghylin Township, the son of Harley and Iva (Keeran) Keator. He was raised and educated in Wilton. He married Ida Tosseth, Nov. 1, 1933, in Bismarck. They lived on a farm near Wilton, where Walter worked at the mines and later farmed. They moved to Bismarck in 1967, where he was employed with Kirschmann Manufacturing, later Melroe Company. Walter had been a resident of the Baptist Home since 1992.

He was a member of First Evangelical Free Church. He enjoyed listening to the Minnesota Twins on the radio.

He is survived by two sisters and brothers-in-law, Ethel and Arthur Tosseth, Wilton, and Elsie and Victor Meyers, Lakehead, Calif.; four sisters-in-law, Ruth Keator, Beatrice Keator and Hannah Perkins, all Bismarck, and Agnes Watkins, Madison, Wis.; one brother-in-law, Oliver Tosseth, Bismarck; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ida, in 1981; three brothers; and three sisters.

Irene Bentz
BEULAH -- Irene Ann Bentz, 83, Portland, Ore., formerly of Beulah, died April 23, 1997, in a Portland nursing home. Services will be at 1 p.m. MDT Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church, Beulah, with the Rev. Reinhold Markwart officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Serving as honorary pallbearers will be all of Irene's grandchildren. Serving as active pallbearers will be Jon Schnaidt, David Schnaidt, Dale Weisz, Sidney Tschaekofske, Marvin Schnaidt and Terry Horning.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today at Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah.

Irene was born Aug. 21, 1913, at Dodge, the daughter of Edward and Regina (Goetz) Tschaekofske. She was educated in rural schools. Irene attended Hazen High School for a time, and graduated from Dodge High School. She then attended Dickinson State College and taught school north of Beulah and north of Dodge for a total of three years. On Aug. 6, 1933, she married George Bentz in a ceremony at St. Paul Lutheran Church, north of Dodge. They lived in Hazen until 1943, when they moved to Golden Valley. In 1952, they moved to Beulah where they were partners in Hanewald and Bentz General Store. They retired in 1974. George died Jan. 24, 1994.

Irene had been a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Hazen, Golgotha Lutheran Church, Golden Valley and Zion Lutheran Church, Beulah. She taught Sunday school for 38 years, taught Bible school and was active in the women's organizations and Bible studies. Irene enjoyed quilting and sewing layettes for Lutheran World Relief. George and Irene loved to spend time fishing and will long be remembered in Beulah for their beautiful gardens. Irene enjoyed the flowers and fruit of Oregon.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, the Rev. Myrin and Audrey, Portland; three daughters and sons-in-law, Marilyn and the Rev. Reuben Schnaidt, Devils Lake, Sharon and Dr. George Pantely, Portland, and Ardith and Dr. Jeff Waesche, Seattle; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mabel Nelson, Bismarck.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George; four brothers, Richard, Elmer, Art and Otmer Tschaekofske; and one sister, Irma Weisz.

Hilda Bauer
ZAP -- Hilda Bauer, 77, Zap, died April 27, 1997, at her home after a long illness. Services will be at 10 a.m. MDT Wednesday at Beulah Congregational Church, Beulah, with the Rev. Jeff Myers officiating. Burial will be in Hope Congregational Cemetery, Golden Valley, with the Rev. John Barwick officiating.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. today at Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah, and will continue at the church from 6:30 to 8 tonight.

Serving as pallbearers will be Elroy Koerner, Clyde Eisenbeis, Myron Eisenbeis, Lyle Eisenbeis, Wayne Eisenbeis and Marvin Sutheimer.

Hilda was born April 10, 1920, north of Beulah, a daughter of John and Lena (Ries) Eisenbeis. She was raised and educated north of Beulah. On Feb. 12, 1943, she married Reuben Bauer at Beulah. Reuben and Hilda farmed north of Zap until 1949 when they moved to Zap. She kept busy with raising the family, gardening, sewing, cooking and baking. Reuben died May 4, 1993. Hilda enjoyed quilting, knitting, embroidery and raising flowers. She was a member of Peace Congregational Church, Zap, where she sang in the choir since its beginning, belonged to the Ladies Aid and the Love and Service Circle. She was a member of the Beulah Congregational Church. Hilda also was a member of Golden Star Homemakers Club for more than 20 years.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, LeRoy and Suzy, Canoga Park, Calif., and Marvin and Joyce, Beulah; five daughters and sons-in-law, Janice and Ronald Gunsch, and Sandra and Lawrence Navratil, all of Zap, Judy and Leland Erickson, Ruby and Matt Krenzel, and Shelley and Vance Giese, all of Beulah; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Erwin and Evelyn Eisenbeis, Raymond and Esther Eisenbeis, and Reuben and Mabel Eisenbeis, all of Beulah; one brother-in-law, Albert Koerner, Marion, S.D.; and special friends, Vernice Weidner, Zap, and Betty Giese, Beulah.

Hilda was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Reuben; two grandsons; one sister; and two brothers. (Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah)

Shirley Mehrer
Shirley Nasset Mehrer, 69, Regent, and Sun City West, Ariz., died April 23, 1997. A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Regent Congregational Church, followed by a light lunch at the Lutheran church. Burial will be private.

The eldest child of L.E. and Jessie Prince, Shirley was born April 30, 1927, one of Regent's "Doc Hill babies." She grew up a western North Dakota girl, attending school in both Regent and New England, then graduating from North Dakota State University in 1949. She married her college sweetheart, Robert Nasset, later that same year. They returned to western North Dakota, settling and teaching in Elgin. In 1952, they moved to a farm north of Regent and farmed there for 20 years. Shirley opened the Home Economics Department at Regent High School, where she taught intermittently until 1982. During this time she raised three children, was an active community member and supervised NDSU student teachers west of the Missouri River.

She taught her children, students and grandchildren to value education, books and the Dakota plains with its expansive skies and prairie wildlife. Two sons remain nearby: Brad and his wife, Cheryl, and their six children, Eric (21), Scott (19), Brent (16), Joe (13), Leah (12) and Sarah (9), all of Regent, and David and his wife, Marie, and their five children, Bob (15), Dan (13), Adria (12), Cora (8) and Abby (7), all of Bowman; her daughter, Cindy Rogers, and her husband, Wes, and their two children, Heather (23) and Ryan (18), all of Minneapolis.

In 1983, after Robert's death, Shirley moved to Arizona. She married Arnold Mehrer of Mott, in Arizona. She acquired more family members, Brad Mehrer, Bismarck, and Laurie and her husband, Rob Larson, and their two sons, Grant (14) and Drew (9), Mott. In Arizona she continued her commitment to various educational groups, tutoring and books. Each spring she returned to North Dakota to spend time with her children, grandchildren, her brothers, Lowell Prince, Regent, and Roger Prince, Bismarck; and other family and friends. Now, after a valiant battle with lymphoma, Shirley returns to the Dakota prairie, this time to stay.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Dollars for Scholars Scholarship program.

Carrie Murdoch
Carrie M. Murdoch, 95, Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, died April 26, 1997, in the nursing home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Eastgate Funeral Service, with the Rev. A.L.C. Keller officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and after 9 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Carrie M. Ambuehl was born Jan. 14, 1902, in Norman County, Minn., the daughter of Paul and Olive (Iverson) Ambuehl. The family farmed near Ada, Minn., until moving to Wimbledon, where Carrie graduated from high school. After attending North Dakota Agricultural College and teaching in a rural Barnes County School, Carrie married Marshall T. Murdoch in Valley City. They made their home in rural Grand Prairie Township, Barnes County, until 1938. While there, Marshall taught school and developed a reputation as a basketball coach. After three years in Valley City and Harvey, the family moved to Bismarck in 1941. Carrie worked as a proofreader at the Bismarck Tribune for many years, and Marshall taught and coached at Bismarck High School until 1960. He then served as the superintendent of buildings and grounds for Bismarck Public Schools until retiring in 1970. Carrie and Marshall were active in community affairs. Marshall died in 1977.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Marlys and Dale Saxvik, Bismarck; one son, James, Bismarck; seven grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; three sisters; and two brothers.

The family prefers memorials to Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, where Mother received such good care for many years.

Melinda Hottman
ABERDEEN, S.D. -- Melinda Hottman, 76, Aberdeen, died April 27, 1997, in the Aberdeen hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at United Church of Christ, Eureka, with burial in Eureka Cemetery.

She is survived by two sons, Edwin Jr. and Michael, both of Aberdeen; two daughters, Virginia Erdmann, Aberdeen, and Ruby Buffington, Bismarck, N.D.; three brothers, Walter Burrer and Fred Burrer, both of Aberdeen, and Ben Burrer, Redfield, S.D.; and three sisters, Alma Wagenmann, Lillian Maier and Lorentina Hottman, all of Aberdeen. Dorothy West
BOWMAN -- Dorothy Gladys West, 85, Bowman, died April 27, 1997, in the Bowman hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m. MDT Wednesday at St. Charles Catholic Church, Bowman, with burial in the church cemetery.

She is survived by her husband, Chester; one son, Darrell; four daughters, Lenore Burke, Bowman, Cecelia Smith, Billings, Mont., Nancy West, Minneapolis, and Ginny Herrera, San Antonio, Texas; and three brothers, Kenneth Stinchfield and Joe Stinchfield, both of Bowman, and Robert Stinchfield, Billings. Keith Conica
CANNON BALL -- Keith Conica, 36, Cannon Ball, died April 26, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Veterans Memorial Building, Cannon Ball, with burial in St. James Episcopal Cemetery, Cannon Ball.

He is survived by one daughter, Charlotte Conica, Cannon Ball; two sons, Chad, Cannon Ball, and Cody, Mandan; and one brother, Larry, Cannon Ball. (Perry Funeral Home, Mandan)

Elmer Wagner
GARRISON -- Elmer A. Wagner, 67, Douglas, died April 27, 1997, in a Minot hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Douglas, with burial in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Cleo; and four sons, James, Mandan, Leigh, Garrison, Douglas, Des Lacs, and Mark, Beulah. (Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison)

Floraine Olson
MOTT -- Floraine C. Olson, 45, Bismarck, died April 26, 1997, in his home. Services will be at 2 p.m. MDT Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Mott, with burial in Sunnyslope Cemetery, Mott.

He is survived by his parents, Chester and Delora, Mott; one sister, Marlene, Sioux Falls, S.D.; and three brothers, Duane, Doug and Gayle, all of Mott. (Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Mott)

Leo Mattern
Leo Mattern, 75, 2738 Gateway Drive, died April 29, 1997, in his home after a long illness. Services will be at 10-30 a.m. Thursday at Church of Corpus Christi, Bismarck, with the Rev. Steve Zastoupil officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan, with military rites by VFW Post No. 1326.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service, and will continue at the church one hour before services. A rosary followed by a vigil will begin at 7 tonight at the funeral home.

Leo was born June 23, 1921, on a farm south of Strasburg, the son of Ferdinand and Elizabeth Mattern. He attended rural schools. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was stationed in India. Leo married Julia Kelsch of Linton, June 17, 1946. They made their home in Strasburg for 29 years. While living in Strasburg, he operated Mattern's Bar and Blue Room and Mattern School Bus Lines.

Leo also raised and showed horses throughout the state. He served as mayor of Strasburg, on the school board and Civic Club. He was active in starting Beaver Valley Horse Club and served as its president. He served on the Mayor's Bicentennial Revolution Committee. He is a charter and lifetime member of VFW. Leo and Julia moved to Bismarck in 1975. While living in Bismarck he worked for Bank of North Dakota. After retiring, Leo and Julia started the Dakota Midwest Flea Market in Mandan. Leo also enjoyed collecting antiques, going to flea markets and auctions and taking various trips around the United States.

He is survived by his wife, Julia; three daughters and sons-in-law, Melinda and Allen Betz, Garrison, Carrilee and Bill Belcher, Sparks, Nev., and Judy and LeRoy Mosset, Mandan; one son, Leo V. Jr., Oregon, Wis.; 11 grandchildren; two step-grandsons; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Elmer, Shenendoah, Iowa; and two sisters, Adeline Godair, Tavernier, Fla., and Betty Schumacher, Linton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother; and one grandson.

Edward Boelter
Edward G. Boelter, 91, 1111 N. First St., died April 28, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at McCabe United Methodist Church, Bismarck, with the Revs. Peary Wilson, Francis Tannehill and Hensel Hendrickson officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck.

A Masonic Service will begin at 7:30 tonight at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. today at the funeral home.

Ed was born July 23, 1905, at Griswold, the son of George and Hattie (Bruschwein) Boelter. He was raised in the Arena and Driscoll areas and attended school in Bismarck. He graduated from Bismarck High School. He also attended University of North Dakota and graduated from Worsham Mortuary College in Chicago. He married Dorothy Pinn, Jan. 26, 1929, at Niles Center, Ill. He returned to Bismarck and worked for the Otto-Convert Funeral Home. He also was a bookkeeper for the Burlington Project in the 1930s. After Mr. Convert died, he purchased the funeral home and it became known as Boelter Funeral Home, which he owned and operated until retiring in 1969.

He was a 54-year Mason, a past master of Lodge No. 5. He belonged to Masonic Bodies, and was an honorary 33rd Degree Mason and a former chief of the Mandan Indian Shriners. He had served as president of North Dakota Funeral Home Directors Association. Eddie loved the outdoors and special times with his family and friends at his Lake Sakakawea cabin. He enjoyed sailing, jet-skiing and other water sports.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; one daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and John Broxmeyer, Riverdale; one son, Steven, Bismarck, and his fiance, Karen Geiger, Mandan; three sisters, Beverly Harms, Bismarck, Mildred Harms, Couer d' Alene, Idaho, and Arlene Klucas, Nisswa, Minn.; one brother, Ray, Seattle; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Linda Hanson, Brian and Renee Eslinger, Gayle and John Miller, Jodi and Earl Hathaway, Terry and Scott Marvin, Shane and Angela Boelter, and Chris Boelter; and seven great-grandchildren, Michael and Rusty Hanson, Nicole and Ashley Eslinger, Cori and Dustin Miller, and Kayse Hathaway.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Masonic H.E.L.P. Center or the donor's choice.

Raymond Griffin
Raymond M. Griffin, 61, Medora, died April 22, 1997, in his home. Services were April 24 at Medora Lutheran Church, with burial in Medora Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; one daughter, Renae, Bozeman, Mont.; one son, Tate, Littleton, Colo.; his parents, Melvin and Margaret Griffin, Belfield; one sister, Glenda Redmond, Belfield; and one brother, Bud, Medora.
