Veronica Schwengler
Veronica Schwengler, 84, Billings, Mont., formerly of Center, died Aug. 27, in a Billings hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. MDT Saturday at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Laurel, with burial in Holy Cross Cemetery, Billings.

A vigil and rosary will be held at 7 tonight at Smith Funeral Chapel, Laurel.

Veronica was born March 8, 1913, in Center, the daughter of Jacob and Margarete Messer. The Messer family immigrated from South Russia to the United States in 1911. Veronica was the youngest of 13 children and was the only one born in the United States. She married Anton J. Schwengler, June 16, 1932, in Center, and they began their married life together living in a log cabin and farming in the Solen area. They moved to Bismarck in 1936, to Billings in 1953, and to Laurel in 1978.

Veronica and Anton were married for 65 years and worked hard at making a living and raising their family of five children. Their children blessed them with 20 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren, whom Veronica enjoyed and loved very much.

She is survived by her husband, Anton; three sons and daughters-in-law, James and Laura, Colorado Springs, Colo., Ray and Alice, Saginaw, Texas, and Michael and Theresa, Phoenix; and one daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Willard Ketterling, Joilet, Mont.

She was preceded in death by her parents; 12 brothers and sisters; her daughter, Kathleen Schwengler Blasingame; one son-in-law, Lawrence Blasingame; and three grandsons.

Susan Matthews
BELFIELD -- Susan P. Matthews, 47, Belfield, died Aug. 27, 1997, in her home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Friday at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Belfield, with the Rev. John G. Guthrie officiating. Burial will be at 1 p.m. CDT Saturday in Mohall Cemetery, with the Rev. Jim Braaten officiating.

Susan Gehringer was born March 4, 1950, in Mohall, to Paul and Susie (Engelhard) Gehringer. She attended Mohall schools and Minot State University. Susan married Tim Matthews, June 4, 1970, in Mohall. They lived in Minot, Bowbells, Kenmare, Mandan, Esmond, New England, Garrison and Belfield, as Tim was the music instructor for the local schools. She worked for General Adjustment Bureau, S.A.T.A.F., New Guard Chiropractic Clinic, and more recently as a homemaker.

She was a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church. Her hobbies included sewing, quilting, gardening, house plants, cooking and crafts.

She is survived by her husband, Tim; two sons, Paul, and his friend, Jeri Davenport, and Brian, and his friend, Jennifer Bialorucki, all of Dickinson; her mother, Susie Gehringer, Mohall; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Mary Lou and Lynn Witteman, Mohall, and Pauline Deschamp, Westhope, and Dianne and Bob Krogen, Parshall; one grandson, Seth, Dickinson.

She was preceded in death by her father, Paul Gehringer; one brother, Earl; one infant daughter, Caroline; and one infant son, Patrick.

Adelaide Gitter
Adelaide M. "Sandi" Gitter, 77, Marion Manor Nursing Home, Glen Ullin, formerly of Bismarck, died Aug. 27, 1997, in the nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Church of St. Anne, Bismarck, with the Rev. Ed Wehner officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter's Catholic Church Cemetery, Hortonville, Wis., at a later date.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at Dakota Memorial Chapel, where a prayer service will begin at 7:30 tonight.

Sandi Binder was born June 14, 1920, a daughter of Frank and Mathilda (Baucknecht) Binder, in Marshfield, Wis., where she was raised and educated. She worked for the local telephone company until she married Philip Gitter, Sept. 18, 1943. They lived in Wisconsin and Minnesota before moving to North Dakota.

Sandi was a member of the PTA, a volunteer at St. Anne's Library, a bowler, and volunteered at the Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco, Texas. She enjoyed needlework, music and gardening.

She is survived by her husband, Philip; two daughters and one son-in-law, Bobbi Gitter, Bismarck, and Peggy and Wayne Cahoon, Stanton; four sons and one daughter-in-law, Steven, Stockton, Calif., Chuck, Beulah, Jeff and Rose, Bismarck, and Bill, Laughlin, Nev.; one granddaughter, Shae Gitter; four grandsons, Troy and Deryk Riveland, Chris and Taylor Cahoon; and one step-grandson, Charles Bauer.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Jean; and one son, James.

Palmer Christensen
DICKINSON -- Palmer Christensen, 87, Dickinson, died Aug. 27, 1997, in a Dickinson nursing home. Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. CDT today at Mandan Union Cemetery, with the Rev. John Nicholi officiating.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to noon MDT today at Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson.

Palmer was born April 23, 1910, in Yucca, to Leonard and Pauline (Peterson) Christensen. He attended the country schools of Yucca near Mandan. He was a carpenter in Dickinson, and helped run a motel. He was single and had never married.

He is survived by two sisters, Lily Watkins, Long Beach, Calif., and Olga Duemeland, Bismarck; one nephew and his wife, Skip and Joni Duemeland, Bismarck; and very special friends, Charles and Martha Rounsville, Dickinson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Spara Duemeland.

Elsie Cordes
CENTER -- Elsie Cordes, 93, Center, died Aug. 28, 1997, in the New Salem nursing home. Services will be held at 1 p.m. CDT Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Center, with the Rev. Glenn Berge officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today at St. Paul Lutheran Church, and will continue after 9 a.m. Saturday.

Elsie Lehmkuhl was born June 11, 1904, on the family farm southeast of Center, the daughter of Louis and Martha (Voeltz) Lehmkuhl. She attended rural school in the area and worked for her father in the register of deeds office for Oliver County until her marriage to Otto H. Cordes, April 15, 1925, in Center. They farmed his farm where they lived until they retired in 1945 and moved to Center. They both did custodial work at the Center School. Otto died March 4, 1972. In 1993, Elsie moved to the Hazen Retirement Home, and in 1996, to Elm Crest Manor in New Salem. She loved to crochet and tat.

She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, and its Ladies Aid, a charter member of South Center Homemakers Club, Center American Legion Auxiliary and Golden Age Club.

She is survived by two daughters, Delores Leinius, Stanton, and Beatrice Berger, Center; six grandchildren and their spouses, Neil and Jane Leinius, Sandra and James Folk, Gary Leinius, Ricky and Barbara Leinius, Randy and Charmayne Leinius and Jolene Berger; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Otto; her stepmother, Ida; her brother, Moc; two sons-in-law, Martin Leinius and Joe Berger; and three grandchildren. (Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan)

Frank Filkoski
DICKINSON -- Frank Filkoski, 92, Dickinson, died Aug. 27, 1997, in the Dickinson hospital. Arrangements are pending at Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson.

Florence Krank
DICKINSON -- Florence C. Krank, 74, Dickinson, died Aug. 26, 1997, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Friday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Dickinson, with burial in St. Pius Cemetery, Scheffield.

She is survived by her husband, Frank; one daughter, Connie Schaff, Dickinson; two sons, Duane and Dale, both of Dickinson; three sisters, Fern Lawrence and Hazel Lutz, both of Dickinson, and Irene Olson, Polson, Mont.; and five brothers, Ralph Johnson, Duane Johnson, both of Polson, Baird Johnson, Medical Lake, Wash., Gene Johnson, Spokane, Wash., and Gary Johnson, Chandler, Ariz. John Ostenberg
LEMMON, S.D. -- John D. Ostenberg, 85, Lemmon, died Aug. 25, 1997, in the Lemmon nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Saturday at Reformed Presbyterian Church, Lemmon, with burial in Greenhill Cemetery, Lemmon.

He is survived by one son, Larry, Santa Barbara, Calif.; and two daughters, Beverly Kelley, St. Paul, Minn., and Connie Hourigan, Lemmon. (Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Lemmon)

Emma Parduhn
ELLENDALE -- Emma Parduhn, 95, Ellendale, died Aug. 25, 1997, in the Ellendale nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Frederick, S.D., with burial in Wayside Cemetery, Frederick.

She is survived by one sister, Anne Martin, Salinas, Calif. (Carlsen Funeral Home, Ellendale)

Michael White Bear
WHITE SHIELD -- Michael White Bear, 33, White Shield, died Aug. 27, 1997, in the Minot hospital. Arrangements are pending at Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison.

Arlene Selle
WILLISTON -- Arlene Severson Selle, 60, Williston, died Aug. 26, 1997, in the Williston hospital. Services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Williston, with burial in Riverview Cemetery, Williston.

She is survived by two sons, Kim Severson, Las Vegas, and Michael Selle, Meridian, Mo.; two daughters, Kayleen Severson, Williston, and Kathy Severson, Meridian; her mother, Agnes Harstad, Williston; one sister, Joan Jensen, Bismarck; and one brother, Leonard Harstad, Williston. DICKINSON -- Palmer Christensen, 87, Dickinson, died Aug. 27, 1997, in a Dickinson nursing home. Arrangements are pending at Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson.

Louella Schwartz
WILLISTON -- Louella Schwartz, 68, Williston, died Aug. 25, 1997, in her home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Everson Memorial Chapel, Williston, with burial in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan.

She is survived by two daughters, Christine Wright, Cottonwood, Calif., and Dawn Gearhart, Casper, Wyo.

Richard Ludtke
PARK RAPIDS, Minn. -- Richard W. Ludtke, 88, Park Rapids, formerly of Bismarck, died Aug. 25, 1997, in a Lake Park nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Johns Lutheran Church, Park Rapids, with burial in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Perham.

He is survived by two sons, William, San Francisco, and Henry, Frazee; and one brother, Ed, Parkers Prairie. (Jones-Pearson Funeral Home, Park Rapids)

William Bitz
NAPOLEON -- William Bitz, 70, Napoleon, died Aug. 25, 1997, in the Napoleon nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, Napoleon, with burial in St. Katherine Cemetery, Braddock.

He is survived by five brothers, Sebastian, Doon, Iowa, Joseph, Bismarck, Alfred, Steger, Ill., Jerry, Bloomington, Ind., and Darwin, Mandan; and three sisters, Angeline Kiefer, Fargo, and Mary Humann and Diane Vetter Jr., both of Napoleon. (Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Napoleon)

Ada Rudolf
WISHEK -- Ada Rudolf, 77, Wishek, died Aug. 27, 1997, in the Wishek hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke Lutheran Church, Wishek, with burial in the church cemetery.

She is survived by her husband, Alvin; two sons, Jerry, Chelan, Wash., and Michael, Glyndon, Minn.; one daughter, Carole Becker, Bismarck; and one sister, Florence Marken, St. Paul, Minn. (Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Wishek)

Lawrence Weichel
STRASBURG -- Lawrence Thomas Weichel, 78, Strasburg, died Aug. 26, 1997, in the Linton hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Strasburg, with the Rev. Leonard Eckroth officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 6 tonight at Myers Funeral Home, Linton, and after 9 a.m. Friday. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services. A rosary will be said at 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Lawrence was born Dec. 25, 1918, on a farm east of Strasburg, the son of Joseph and Barbara (Schwab) Weichel. He attended rural school. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corp stationed at Dunseith for five years. He worked for the railroad for one year. He married Rose Selzler, Oct. 7, 1946, at St. Aloisius Catholic Church, rural Strasburg. They farmed with his parents for six years before moving to their own farm eight miles east of Strasburg. They moved into Strasburg in 1984.

He was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Strasburg Senior Citizens, and had served on the Xeter Township School Board for many years. He enjoyed his grandchildren and loved to farm.

He is survived by his wife, Rose; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Donald, and Leonard and Cleo, all of Strasburg; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Bob Ripplinger, and Betty Ann and Lloyd Brodt, all of Regina, Saskachewan, Canada; nine grandchildren, Darcy, Brian, Derek and Brenda Ripplinger, Jody and Lisa Brodt, and Natosha, Dion and Jennifer Weichel; and two brothers and three sisters-in-law, Carl and Helen Weichel, Tony Weichel, Irene Weichel and Angeline Weichel, all of Bismarck.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Joe and Mike; and one infant sister.

Frank Brave Bull
FORT YATES -- Frank "Punchier" Brave Bull, 69, Cannon Ball, died Aug. 25, 1997, in a Fort Yates hospital of natural causes. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Cannon Ball school gym, with the Rev. Les Campbell officiating. Burial will be near Frank Brave Bull's home, rural Cannon Ball.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan. A wake service will begin at 7 p.m. Friday at the school gym.

Frank was born Aug. 8, 1928, in Cannon Ball, to John Brave Bull Sr. and Eva (Kuntz) Brave Bull. He attended school at St. Bernard Mission School in Fort Yates. He served in the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1954, and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. He worked for the police department in Fort Yates and Little Eagle, S.D. He also did police work at Belcourt, Fort Totten, Fort Thompson, S.D., and Rosebud, S.D. Frank was Cannon Ball District Chairman and Cannon Ball District committee member in the mid-1970s. He was a member of Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Council in the late 1970s. He worked in the security department at United Tribes Technical College for many years. He retired in October 1995 from UTTC and returned to Cannon Ball. Frank married twice in his lifetime, to Valerie Lovejoy in 1955, and to Barbara Cloud in 1971.

He is survived by two sisters, Annie Thunder Hawk, Cannon Ball, and Josephine Barrett, Fort Yates; one brother, George Brave Bull, Solen; nine sons, Charles Murphy, Shields, Randall F. Brave Bull, Bismarck, Curtis Brave Bull, Cannon Ball, Charles T. "Bo-John" Brave Bull, Fort Yates, Scott Brave Bull, Paris, France, Frankie Jay Brave Bull, Cannon Ball, Don Cain, Bismarck, Alex Gowan, South Carolina, Richie Gowan, Madison, Wis.; eight daughters, Ernestine Dupree, Montana, LaDonna Brave Bull Allard, Fort Yates, Valmarie ``Kelly" Green, Longview, Texas, Marty Jo Brave Bull, Fort Yates, Nola Lopez, Semible, Mich., Cherrith Brave Bull, Carrieth Brave Bull and Sunny Johnson, all of Sisseton, S.D.; a special friend, Justine Parkhust, Aunt Agretha Ireland; all the Kuntz's family; sons-in-law; daughters-in-law; grandchildren; one great-grandchild; nephews; nieces; cousins; and all Frank's friends who worked with him on the police force, UTTC Security Office, Cannon Ball District Tribal Council, Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Council and ranching.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Eva Brave Bull; one brother, John Brave Bull Jr.; and two sons, Edward Brave Bull and Claude Ross Brave Bull.

Gertrude Schafer
UNDERWOOD -- Gertrude R.F. Schafer, 83, Underwood, died Aug. 25, 1997, in the Underwood nursing home. Services will be held at 9-30 a.m. Friday at Goetz Funeral Home, Underwood. Further arrangements are pending.

Phyllis Rekdal
DEVILS LAKE -- Phyllis Rekdal, 84, Devils Lake, died Aug. 23, 1997, in the Devils Lake nursing home. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Warwick Lutheran Church, with burial in Warwick Cemmetery.

She is survived by one son, Vance, Steele. (Aaker, Dunnigan and Brooks Funeral Home, Devils Lake)

Charles Erickson
GARRISON -- Charles Erickson, 61, Sycamore, Ill., died Aug. 24, 1997, in Rockford, Ill. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Garrison. Further arrangements are pending at Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison.
