Viola Johnson
Viola C. Johnson, 90, Cokato, Minn., died April 3, 1999, in a Litchfield, Minn., hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Steve Sathre officiating. Burial will be in the spring at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Jamestown.

Visitation will be from 3-9 p.m. Friday, at Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Viola was born on June 6, 1908, at Valley City, the daughter of John and Guro (Aasen) Sad. She grew up in Valley City and graduated from Valley City State Teachers College and then taught high school English in Fessenden.

Viola married Clyde A. Johnson on June 3, 1933. Following their marriage, she worked for several years in the Home Extension Agent's Office and the city offices in Jamestown. She substitute taught in Fessenden and Jamestown. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Moose Club and Eastern Star. She loved to read, listen to classical music and be with her many friends. Above all, she was a devoted mother to her family.

She is survived by two daughters, Mary Ann Holloway, Harlowton, Mont., and Elizabeth Louise Young, Cokato, Minn.; her grandchildren, James Alan Holloway, Mary Elizabeth Bennett, Holly Elizabeth Erickson and Heather Louise Young; and her great-grandchildren, Riley James Bennett, Brian Thomas Bennett and Morgan Elizabeth Erickson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde A. Johnson; one son, John William Johnson; one brother, Jack Sad; and three sisters, Ann Anderson, Joanna Boyd and Inga Sad. (Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck)

Geraldine Akerberg
Geraldine "Gerry" Akerberg, 73, Bismarck, died April 7, 1999, in a local hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, with the Rev. Duane Wacker officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday, at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck.

Geraldine Akerberg was born June 5, 1925, in Dorchester, Dorset, England, to Edward and Maude Mary (Wellman) Flischer. She was raised and educated in England. She and William Sigurd Akerberg were married Dec. 20, 1944, in Moroton, Dorset, England. In 1949, she and her husband came to the United States to New England. In 1950, they moved to Bismarck. She was employed as a bookkeeper at Montgomery Wards, Dakota National Bank and 1st National Bank, all in Bismarck.

On June 11, 1997, she received the "Someone Special Volunteer Award" from the Make a Wish Foundation where she volunteered as a wish granter for ten years. She liked to knit and was a co-owner of the "Knit Wit" store in Kirkwood Mall. She enjoyed gardening and pets, especially dogs.

She is survived by one son, Colin Akerberg, Des Moines, Iowa; one daughter and son-in-law, Astrid and Larry Senger, Bismarck; and six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William; and an infant sister.

A special "thank you" to Gerry's granddaughter Leni Lister for being her primary caregiver the last year of her life. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)

Teresa Slezak
Teresa Slezak, 80, Bismarck, died April 6, 1999, in a Bismarck care center. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Mandan and an additional memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center. Private burial will be in Union Cemetery, Mandan.

Teresa Pope was born April 15, 1918, in Mandan, the daughter of H.S. and Theresa (Yunck) Pope. Teresa was employed at United Tribes Technical College for more than 15 years. She was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses in 1983. Teresa enjoyed cooking and baking. She loved her family and friends and was loved by all who knew her.

She is survived by her son, Ted Slezak, Arizona; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Patricia and Don Ivey, Bismarck, Rosalie and Vern Born, Reedsville, W.V., Debbie Klesalek, Mandan, and Heidi and Monte Berger, Mandan; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Tom Pope, Mandan.

Teresa was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers and two sisters.

Francis Mountain
Francis W. Mountain, 60, McLaughlin, S.D., died April 6, 1999, in the Fort Yates hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. CDT Saturday, at McLaughlin City Auditorium, with the Revs. Rocky White Mountain and Sonya White Mountain officiating. Burial will be in McLaughlin City Cemetery.

A family service will be held at Good News Assembly of God Church, McLaughlin, at 7 p.m. CDT Friday.

Francis was born Jan. 5, 1939, at Bullhead, S.D., to Willis and Lucy (Crazy Hawk) White Mountain. He attended BIA boarding schools in Pierre and Hot Springs, S.D., and also attended Fort Yates High School. On Dec. 7, 1957, he married Joan Brooks in Salina, Kan. He entered the Air Force in 1955 and made it his career, serving two tours of duty in Vietnam. He retired with the rank of Sergeant in 1975 at Shepherd Air Force Base. He enjoyed boxing and boxed for the Air Force as an amateur.

He served on the Community Grass Roots Organization, Lakota Oyate RMC, Rainbow Project Board Boys and Girls Club, Gaming Commission board, Little Eagle American Legion, and received the Jefferson Award for volunteer services in his community.

He is survived by his former wife, Joan Mountain, McLaughlin; three daughters and one son-in-law, Sonya White Mountain, Tonya White Mountain and Sandra and Gary Welch, all of McLaughlin; two sons and daughters-in-law, Rocky and Emily, McLaughlin, and Stan and Carol, Wichita Falls, Texas; one sister, Josephine White Mountain, McLaughlin; two stepsisters, Audrey Marshell, McLaughlin, and Isabel Standing Crow, Fort Yates; three brothers, Joe, McLaughlin, Anthony, Sioux Falls, S.D., and Bernard, Michigan; seven grandchildren, Heather, Crystal, Joshua, Matthew, Nicole, Brody and Samuel; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Marletta Mountain Torrence; one sister and one brother. (Perry Funeral Home, Mandan)

Waldo Hintz
CENTER -- Waldo Hintz, 68, Center, died April 6, 1999, in the New Salem nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. CDT Friday, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Hannover, with the Rev. Bruce Kristalyn officiating. Burial will be in the Hannover Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4-9 p.m. today, at the church, and from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday, at the church also.

Waldo was born on Oct. 17, 1930, the son of William D. and Maria D. (Bornemann) Hintz. He attended parochial school in Hannover and graduated from New Salem High School. He married Elvera Letzring on Oct. 3, 1953, at Churchtown. They farmed north of New Salem until 1962 and moved to Center in 1965. Waldo was employed in the construction industry, driving gravel truck, building forms for concrete, and performing welding and carpenter work. He also worked on the construction of area power plants. He particularly enjoyed rebuilding horse-drawn buggies. A member of the St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Waldo loved singing with the adult choir.

Waldo is survived by his wife, Elvera, Center; six children, Leatha Hoffman and her special friend, Robert Agnew, Golden Valley, Minn., Leone Percival and her husband, David, Mandan, Allen Hintz, Center, Nathan Hintz and his wife, Kimberly, Auburn, Wash., Leslie Hintz and his fiancee, Rhonda Nichols, Hazen, Karene Hintz and her fiance, Raymond Hall, Bismarck; nine grandchildren, Michael and Stephanie Six, Andrew Hoffman, Alexandria and Lacey Hintz, Heather and Bailee Hintz, Elise Hintz and Alisha Nichols; one sister and brother-in-law, Marvel and Roger Klingenstein, New Salem; and 18 nieces and nephews.

Roger Nieland
Roger E. Nieland, 56, Bismarck, died suddenly April 6, 1999, from an aneurysm in Spokane, Wash. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday, at Bismarck Funeral Home.

Roger E. Nieland was born on Aug. 4, 1942, in Bismarck, the son of Ralph and Fern (Faust) Nieland. He graduated from Wapato, Wash., in 1960. He married Margie Kendall on Aug. 14, 1962, in Moffit. Roger drove truck for the last 12 years, most recently with 4K's Transportation in Bismarck. He loved his family and grandchildren. He also enjoyed woodworking.

Roger is survived by his wife, Margie; two daughters and two sons-in-law, Sherri and Richard Heid, Casper, Wyo.; LaShell and Scott Storrs, Cheyenne, Wyo.; three grandchildren, Rocky, Shandar and Nash; his mother, Fern Nieland, Wapato, Wash.; two brothers, Marvin, Puyallup, Wash., Edward, Phoenix, Ariz.; and one sister, Gail Fitzsimmons, Yakima, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ralph; his sisters, Paula and Peggy; and one granddaughter, Bailey. (Bismarck Funeral Home)

Eugene Berger
DICKINSON -- Eugene Berger, 76, Dickinson, died April 6, 1999, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held 10 a.m. MDT Friday, at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Dickinson. Inurnment will follow in St. Wenceslaus Cemetery, Dickinson.

He is survived by his wife, Johanna; one son, Duane Berger, Anchorage, Alaska; three daughters, Mary Berger, Glendive, Mont., Annette Berger, Kent, Ohio, and Eileen Berger, Mott; and one brother, Walter Berger, Richardton. (Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson)

Leo Rubbelke
Leo H. Rubbelke, 84, Bismarck, died April 6, 1999, at his home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Charlie Heidt officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veteran's Cemetery, Mandan.

Visitation will begin 4-8 p.m. today, at Bismarck Funeral Home. A rosary will be lead by the 4th Degree of Knights of Columbus at 7 p.m. and a vigil service will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Friday. (Bismarck Funeral Home)

Abner Disrud
ROLLA -- Abner Trenton Disrud, 90, Rolla, died April 5, 1999, in a Grand Forks hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, at United Methodist Church, Rolla. Burial will be in Rolla Cemetery in the spring.

He is survived by three sons, Trenton, Rolla, Roger, Olathe, Kan., and Lowell, Fargo; two daughters, Linda Olson, Buxton, and Loretta Gray, Roanoke, Va.; and one sister, Glenore Disrud, San Francisco, Calif. (Niewoehner Funeral Home, Rolla)

Robert Quam
Robert Scott Quam, formerly of Bismarck, died March 28, 1999, in San Francisco. A memorial service is set for April 17, 1999, in Ross, Calif.

He is survived by two daughters, Alexandria, San Rafael, Calif., and Jill, San Anselmo, Calif.; his sister, Gayle Sette, Banning, Calif., and his brother, John, Detroit Lakes, Minn.

Tony Wittinger
DICKINSON -- Tony Wittinger, 92, Dickinson, died April 5, 1999, in a Dickinson nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Saturday, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Dickinson. Further arrangements are pending with Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson.

Jerome Pfeifle
ASHLEY -- Jerome Pfeifle, 63, Ashley, died April 6, 1999, in the Ashley hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, at Zion Lutheran Church, Ashley. Further arrangements are pending with Carlsen Funeral Home, Ashley.

Edward Rath
TURTLE LAKE -- Edward Rath, 83, Underwood, formerly of Turtle Lake, died April 7, 1999, in the Underwood nursing home. Services will be held at 10-30 a.m. Saturday at Ed Rath Auditorium, Turtle Lake-Mercer High School, with the Rev. Curt Hanson officiating. Burial will be in Turtle Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1:30-8 p.m. Friday at Goetz Funeral Home, Turtle Lake, and will continue one hour before services at the auditorium.

Edward Rath was born Feb. 8, 1916, near Coleharbor, to Henry and Margaret (Seidler) Rath. He married Clara Berg in 1937 at Garrison and they made their home in Turtle Lake. They owned and operated a restaurant for many years and later operated the Alley Cat Drive-In which they ran for 18 years. Ed was custodian at the Turtle Lake Community Hospital for three years and custodian at Turtle Lake-Mercer School for 33 years. He retired in 1978. On July 1, 1978, Ed was honored when the Turtle Lake-Mercer Physical Education building was completed and dedicated as the "Ed Rath Auditorium." Although Ed was not an educator, many students learned a great deal from him while he worked at the school. Ed served as a city commissioner for several years, and treasurer of the Zion Conservative Congregational Church for 18 years. He spent countless hours at his cabin on Crooked Lake where he enjoyed building and repairing things and working outside. Ed was not one to slow down, he was a man of many talents and a man of few words. All who knew him loved and respected him.

He is survived by his wife, Clara; two daughters and sons-in-law, Doris and Elton Just, Minot, and Deborah and Robert Boe, Turtle Lake; one son and daughter-in-law, Curtis and Debbie Rath, Mandan; seven grandchildren, Terry Just, Jeff Just, Greg Just, Toby Rath, Jamie Rath, Krystal Boe and Amanda Boe; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Fred, Turtle Lake; and two sisters, Bertha Iverson, Garrison, and Tillie Wasson, Velva.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Christ, Emil, Herbert and John; and four sisters, Anna, Martha, Lorraine and Regina.

Edwin Bustrack
FORT YATES -- Edwin Bustrack, 99, Fort Yates, died April 4, 1999, in his home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Assembly of God Church, Fort Yates, with the Rev. David Kallappa officiating. Burial will be in Reed Cemetery, southwest of Fort Yates.

Visitation will begin one hour before services at the church.

Ed was born Dec. 29, 1899, and moved to the Fort Yates area from a farm in Minnesota. In 1956 he met Frieda Nagel and resided with her until her death in 1981. While living in Fort Yates, Ed had his little business of selling minnows, which he enjoyed. When he wasn't selling minnows, he enjoyed the outdoors and you could find Ed at the river fishing, having a good ol' time. His other great talents included carpentry and yard work.

He is survived by his five stepdaughters and three stepsons-in-law, Filina and Donald Ressler, Mandan, Opal and Herb Renken, Shields, Ruby and Herman Block, McIntosh, S.D., Lucille Peterson, Clarkston, Wash., and LaVonne Mohr, Deadwood, S.D.

He was preceded in death by three stepsons, Clint Harrison Sr., Alvie Harrison and Raymond Harrison. (Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan)

Tony Wittinger
DICKINSON -- Tony Wittinger, 92, Dickinson, died April 5, 1999, in a Dickinson nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Saturday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Dickinson, with burial in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Beatrice; three sons, Ken, Fridley, Minn., Don, Piedmont, S.D., and Alfred, Minneapolis; and one sister, Barbara Martin, Mandan. (Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson)
