Pauline Spitzer
Pauline Spitzer, 86, 3901 110th Ave. N.E., Mandan, died July 29, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Stephen Wisthoff officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Pauline Hagstrom was born March 3, 1911, on a farm near Wilton, the daughter of Olaf and Ida (Eliasson) Hagstrom. She was raised and educated near Wilton. She attended Dickinson State College and received a teaching certificate. She taught school in rural Morton and Burleigh counties for two years. She married Lawrence Spitzer, Sept. 7, 1934, in Mandan. They farmed north of Bismarck.

Pauline was a charter member of Arnold Homemakers Club, and remained a member for 55 years. She enjoyed music, and visiting with family and friends.

She is survived by her husband, Lawrence; two daughters and one son-in-law, Patricia and Arden Hagerott, Mandan, and Phyllis Berreth, Bismarck; five grandchildren, Donavon Hagerott, Mandan, Jonathan Hagerott, Overland Park, Kan., Janel Olson, Mandan, Nicole Mindt, Sioux Falls, S.D., and Mia Corrigan, Mandan; three great-grandchildren, Jordan Hagerott, Breckinridge, Minn., Tarren-Lee Hagerott, Mandan, and Breanna Olson, Mandan; one sister and brother-in-law, Ingrid and Edwin Brenneise, Tacoma, Wash.; one one sister-in-law, Marion Hagstrom, Bismarck; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters; and three brothers.

Keith Mauch
GOODRICH -- Keith Allen Mauch, 14, Goodrich, died July 29, 1997, in a drowning accident near his home. Arrangements are pending at Hertz Funeral Home, McClusky.

Leslie Banyai
MOTT -- Leslie N. Banyai, 62, Mott, died July 29, 1997, in the Hettinger hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MDT Saturday at Church of St. Vincent de Paul, Mott, with burial in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Maggie; one daughter, Sara, Mott; one son, Steven, Mott; his mother, Sophie Banyai, Clear Lake, Minn.; six brothers, Ray, Buffalo, Minn., Frank, Bismarck, Nick, Elgin, Eugene and Claude, both of Monticello, Minn., and Myron, Clearwater; and four sisters, Sophie Peitz, North Branch, Minn., Luella Cave, Rice, Minn., Susanna Stopls, Clearwater, and Imogene Worm, St. Joseph, Minn. (Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Mott)

Sidney Hansen
Sidney F. Hansen, 90, Huntington Beach, Calif., died July 17, 1997, in Newport Beach, Calif. Westminster Memorial Park will handle the cremation.

He is survived by four daughters, Sylvia Peretz, Linda Dozsa, Sandi Decker and Kathleen Ervin; and one son, Sidney.

Magdalena Hellman
Magdalena "Maggie" Hellman, 83, 1506 First Ave. N.W., Mandan, died July 30, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Robert Feeney officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Glen Ullin, at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 tonight, and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan. A Catholic Daughters rosary will be said at 4 p.m. Friday. A Women of the Moose ritual will begin at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home followed by a parish vigil will be held at 7:30, also at the funeral home.

Magdalena "Maggie" Hopfauf was born March 13, 1914, to Stanley and Emilia (Leingang) Hopfauf, at Fallon. The oldest of 16 children, she was raised on a farm near Fallon. She lived there until her marriage to Jacob Hellman, Oct. 26, 1932, in Fallon. They lived on a farm south of Glen Ullin, where eight children were born to them. Her husband died in 1972 after 40 years of marriage. They had lived in Glen Ullin briefly before his death. She moved to Mandan in March of 1973, where she has resided since.

Some of her hobbies include playing an instrument in the Liberty Heights Kitchen Band and embroidering. Up to this time she has probably completed about 75 sets of dish towels and numerous sets of pillow cases. She loved to bake and enjoyed sharing her baked goods with her family and friends.

Maggie was a member of Golden Age Services, Kitchen Band since 1976, and Tops Club North Dakota, which has been one of her greatest pleasures since she has lived in Mandan. The friends she made there were a source of great joy and inspiration to her. She was also a member of the Catholic Daughters, Women of the Moose, Women of the Eagles, RSVP Volunteers since 1976 and Christian Mothers of St. Joseph Church, Glen Ullin.

She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Duane and Irene, Mandan, Art and Pauline, Glen Ullin, and Terry and Lyvon, Mandan; five daughters and sons-in-law, Angie and Jack Doll, Flasher, Lorraine and Tony Schirado, Glen Ullin, Lillian and Leo Johs, Jamestown, Jan and Roger Bond, Mandan, and Mary Ann and Mike Adams, Sibley, Iowa; 26 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; six sisters and one brother-in-law, Catherine Erhardt, Mandan, Rose Boehl, Flasher, Genevieve Eckroth, Flasher, Frances Bohl, Mandan, Agnes Eckroth, Bismarck, and Clem and Gene Volk, Bismarck; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Tony and Frances, Mandan, Leo and Josephine, Glendive, Mont., Florian and Georgia, Culbertson, Mont., and Ralph and Katherine, Mandan; and one brother-in-law, Adam J. Emter, Wickenburg, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; four sisters; one brother; and three grandsons.

Edward Knoll
Edward J. Knoll, 57, 1111 N. First St., died July 29, 1997, in his home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Christ the King Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Hugo L. Blotsky officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, with military rites by Bismarck Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post No. 1326.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a Catholic Daughters rosary will be said at 4 p.m. today, followed by a Christian Mothers rosary at 4:30. A Knights of Columbus rosary will be said at 7 tonight, followed by a parish vigil at 7:30.

Ed was born Oct. 5, 1939, in Mandan. He was the son of Joseph G. and Annamary (Schmidt) Knoll. Ed attended Mandan schools, graduating from Mandan High School in 1958. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1958-1969, and the reserves from 1969-1977. Ed worked for International Harvester, Inc., Bismarck, and was presently employed by Dan's Supermarket at Arrowhead Plaza, Bismarck.

He is survived by three brothers and sisters-in-law, Peter and Catherine, Sun City, Ariz., Tony and Carol, Mandan, and Mike and Mary, Bismarck; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Kay Ellis, Appleton, Wis., and Veronica and Jack Zander, Bismarck; and sister-in-law, Josephine Knoll, Tracy, Calif.; and 17 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, George.

Woodmansee, businessman, dies at age 81
Joe G. Woodmansee, 81, 919 N. First St., died July 29, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Robert D. Lynne officiating. A private family burial will be held.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Chapel, Bismarck, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Joe was born Nov. 30, 1915, in Bismarck, the son of Harry and Tess Woodmansee. Joe married Winnifred M. McGillie, Nov. 10, 1937. Joe was a long time Bismarck businessman. He was an avid sports fan and a member of the 1933 Bismarck High School State Basketball Champions.

He is survived by his wife, Winnie; three sons and daughters-in-law, Tom and Mary, Bismarck, Butch and Mary, Fort Collins, Colo., and Joe and Nancy, Bismarck; four daughters and sons-in-law, Toni and Gary Young, Bloomington, Ill., Pat and Monte Peterson, Fort Collins, Fran and Jon Joersz, Bismarck, and Kim and Dr. Warren Dopson, Eugene, Ore.; 18 grandchildren, Wendy and Cole Dooley, Chad, Kara and Reid Young, Scott and Kelly Woodmansee, Pam and Ryan Peterson, Jeff, Joe, Jill and Josh Woodmansee, Brett Ben, Courtney Joersz, Mandy Jo and Brian Woodmansee, and Nicholas and Quinn Dopson; and one great-granddaughter, Brooke Dooley.

The family prefers memorials to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Bismarck Community Bowl or the donor's choice.

Donald Cadotte
Donald Charles Cadotte, whose Indian name Ma-PIYA Tatanka or Buffalo Cloud, 59, Bismarck, died March 8, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Bedes Catholic Church, Wakpala, S.D.

A prayer services will be said at 3 p.m. today at James Henry Gymnasium at United Tribes Technical College, Bismarck. A wake service will be said at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Wakpala, S.D., Community Center.

Don was born April 8, 1939, in Wakpala to John and Sophia (Iron Horn) Cadotte. He attended elementary and junior high school in Wakpala. His senior high school years were at Upton High School, Upton, Wyo., where he graduated in 1957. While in high school he was very active with various clubs or groups. He served as senior class vice president, student council president, football captain, basketball co-captain, and was a homecoming king. He was well known for his athletic abilities and was awarded an athletic scholarship to the Black Hills Teachers College.

He served honorably in the U.S. Marine Corps for three years and attained the rank of corporal. He was stationed at Camp Pendleton, Calif., as a field artillery fire control director with the 11th Marines, First Marine Division. In his later years, he continued with his support of the Armed Forces by being a member of the American Legion and Standing Rock Vietnam Veterans Association.

Upon his discharge from the Marines, he returned to the Mobridge area and worked several years with his close friend, Mr. Jerome Aberle of the Aberle Well Drilling Company. On Aug. 9, 1965, he married Ruby Howard in Mobridge. They made their home in the Mobridge area until 1978 when he moved his family to Bismarck to work at the United Tribes Technical College.

He was employed at the college for 20 years. During this time, he became well known for his work ethic. Despite his failing health, he continued his employment and often reported to work hours before other employees. He took pride in his work and was not one to shirk his responsibilities. During his employment at United Tribes, he served several years on the school board, faculty panel and hearing panel. He is also a member of the Standing Rock School Board.

He was an avid fan of the United Tribes Thunderbird basketball team. He attended as many games as his health would permit. The team expressed their thanks by dedicating their last home game to him, which they won. He enjoyed his hobby of making diamond willow walking canes to give to people as gifts.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Ruby; his daughters, Jackie and Janice Cadotte, Billings, Mont.; one son, Christopher Cadotte, and his youngest daughter, Randi Cadotte, Bismarck; an adopted son, Adrian Stands Sr., Pryor, Mont.; his grandchildren that he cherished very much, Alex, Whitney, Tyler, Sheyenne, Sandra, Adrian Jr., Tahnee and Larita. Also his brother and sister-in-law, Stan and Suzanne Cadotte; his sisters and one brother-in-law, Delores and Ron Walters Sr., Elgin, and Karen Cadotte, Jasper, Minn.; his adopted parents, Sidney and Minnie Eagle Shield, McLaughlin, S.D., his brothers-in-law, Grey Holy Bull and Leroi Landreau; his sisters-in-law, Virginia Weasel Boy, Beverly Howard, Mary Good Eagle and Teddi Six Killer; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sophia and John Cadotte; and four sisters, Audrey, Marlene, Rose and Viola.

Frieda Melby
Frieda Melby, 64, 1904 Eighth Ave. S.E., Mandan, died March 8, 1998. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Heart River Lutheran Church, on the grounds of the North Dakota Youth Correction Center, Mandan, with the Rev. Dale Nabben officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. today, and 9 a.m.-noon Wednesday, both at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, and will continue for one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday afternoon.

Frieda (Kain) Melby was born Feb. 3, 1934 in Messex, Colo. She was the daughter of Fred and Elizabeth (Kramer) Kain. Frieda was raised and educated in Colorado. She married Albert Shipman on July 3, 1953. She worked at various jobs in Bowbells and Flaxton. She moved to Mandan where she worked for MedCenter One Care Center as a certified nurse aide. She married Audran Melby on Aug. 3, 1973 in Tolley.

Frieda was an avid bowler, of which she held various league offices. She looked forward to the ocean cruises that she and her brother, Don, took together. She loved and enjoyed the time spent with her grandchildren.

She is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, Kevin and Tracy Shipman, Springfield, Ore., Dave and Michelle Shipman, Mandan, and Gary Shipman, Bismarck; five daughters and two sons-in-law, Linda and Bruce Beechie, Deb Shipman, and Kathy and Frank Berrios, all of Mandan, Lois Sederquest and her companion, Jim Rick, Minot, and Dianna Gravesen and her fiancee, Tom Lang, Kenmare; two stepsons and one daughter-in-law, Brent Melby, Bowbells, and Steve and Debi Melby, Grand Forks; and four stepdaughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Dave Mahlum, Bowbells, Pat and Bob Blomquist, Battleview, Ranae and Dwight Ehlke, Kenmare, and Roxanne and Steve McFarland, Hettinger; 16 grandchildren; 14 step-grandchildren; and one step great-grandchild; six brothers and five sisters-in-law, William and Marlys Kain, Haxtun, Colo., Alvin and Mary Ann Kain, Sterling, Colo., Don Kramer-Kain, Tampa, Fla., Raymond and Anita Kain, Douglas, Wyo., Henry Kain, Paoli, Colo., C.J. and Judy Kain, Haxtun, and Edythe Kain, Paoli; and four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Alice and Jack Bauer, Greeley, Colo., Henrietta Wernsman, Sidney, Neb., Ruth and Mike Gartner, Grant, Neb., and Clara and Bill Andersen, Ovid, Colo.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Audran Melby, who died in November of 1990; and her twin brother, Fred.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to MedCenter One Hospice.
