Olaf Svanes
STEELE -- Olaf H. Svanes, 86, Steele, died Jan. 6, 1999, in the Steele nursing home. Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Steele, with the Rev. Sharon Kapsch officiating.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, and will continue from 1 to 9 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Steele.

Olaf was born Oct. 23, 1912, in Eigersund, Norway, the son of Ole and Hansine Svanes. He was raised and educated in Norway.

Olaf farmed in Norway and at the age of 16, he moved to the United States and farmed with a brother and cousin in Kintyre. In 1939, Olaf went back to Norway and married Herdis Larsen, May 4, 1940.

He was a farmer and fisherman. In 1944, he was captured by the Germans and was a POW in a German prison for one year. After Olaf was released from prison, he and his wife, Herdis, traveled about three weeks by boat to the United States, back to the farm in Kintyre. Olaf retired due to his illness and they moved to Steele in 1984.

Olaf enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Herdis; two godchildren, Margie and Wayne; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; and one sister.

Clair Ross
BEACH -- Clair L. Ross, 73, Beach, died Jan. 7, 1999, in Bismarck. Services will be 2 p.m. MST Monday at United Community Church, Beach, with the Rev. Stephen Holmes officiating.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. today and 6 to 8 tonight at Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home, Beach. The family will be at the UCC Church from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Clair was born Feb. 15, 1925, in Beach, to Hugh and Rachel (Zielsdorf) Ross, and received his education in Beach, graduating in 1943. He married Pauline Readinger, Jan. 25, 1946, in Red Lodge, Mont. Together they farmed and raised four children.

In 1973, Clair retired from farming and he and Pauline moved from their farm north of town into their present home in Beach. Clair always missed active full-time involvement with the farm. He could often be found checking out the crops and just enjoying the outdoors. He was well-known for his beautiful yard.

Clair also was an avid woodworker. Examples of his beautiful work are found in many local homes.

Clair was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Beach Co-op Elevator Board, Saddle Butte School Board and Township and the UCC church board. Clair was also named North Dakota Wildlife Conservationist of the Year in 1984, an award sponsored by the North Dakota Wildlife Federation.

He is survived by his wife of almost 53 years, Pauline; three sons and daughters-in-law, John and Angela, Bismarck, Bruce and Cheryl, Beach, and Craig and Jackie, Bakersfield, Calif.; one daughter and son-in-law, Barb and Mike Oppegard, Dickinson; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one sister and brother-in-law, Barbara Ann and Cliff Harchenko, Lewistown, Mont.

Clair was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Orval Ross.

Delores Freda
Delores Eleanor Freda, 72, former longtime Burt Township of Ward County resident, died Jan. 7, 1999, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Zion Lutheran Church, Minot, with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens, rural Minot.

Visitation will be from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday and 9 to 11 a.m. Monday at Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.

She was born Feb. 24, 1926, at Minot, to Albert and Dora (Sartwell) Solheim. She was raised on a farm in Burt Township of Ward County and attended Burt Township Schools. Delores married Floyd Freda, Sept. 4, 1943, at Minot. They made their home on a farm in Burt Township of Ward County, where they raised small grains and livestock.

Mrs. Freda was employed as an officeworker at the Moose Lodge for a time. They retired from farming in 1992 and moved to Minot. Floyd died Nov. 30, 1995. Delores moved to Bismarck in November 1997, to be nearer her son and his family.

Mrs. Freda was an active member of the Farmers Union and served as a youth leader for that organization. She was a member of the Women of the Moose. Delores was a former member of Gethsemane Lutheran Church, rural Minot, and Zion Lutheran Church, Minot.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Darwin Meisner, Cleveland, Wis.; one son and daughter-in-law, Delwin and Angie, Bismarck; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one brother, Vernon Solheim, Billings, Mont.

The family prefers memorials to Home Medical Resources of Medcenter One, Box 580, Bismarck, N.D. 58502-0580.

Clarence Fretty
STANTON -- Clarence Fretty, 89, Stanton, died Jan. 8, 1999, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be 10 a.m. MST Tuesday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Stanton, with the Rev. Jay Spoonheim officiating. Burial will be in the Stanton City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. MST Monday, at Seibel Funeral Home chapel, Hazen.

Clarence was born north of Stanton on April 13, 1909, the son of Sam and Josephine (Johnson) Fretty. He attended school in the rural Stanton area. Following his schooling, Clarence worked for area farmers, coal miners and in Washington State.

On Nov. 19, 1939, he married Emma Mohl. Together, they lived and farmed in the Pleasant Valley area until 1959, when they moved to their farm in the Deapolis area. Clarence served on the Deapolis and Stanton school boards, the Our Savior's Lutheran Church Council and the Fork Clark Irrigation District Board. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing bridge or pinochle, and also helping friends.

Clarence is survived by one daughter, Phyllis Maier and her husband, Al, Aiken, Minn.; three sons, Tom Fretty and his wife Bev, Stanton, Byron Fetty and his wife Grace, Big Lake, Minn., and DuWayne Fretty, Stanton; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one brother, Orville Fretty, Stanton; and two sisters, Gunella Brown, Seattle, and Rachel Eddy, Anchorage, Alaska.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Emma; his parents; two sons, Gary and one son in infancy; three brothers, Randall, Burton and Melvin; and two sisters, Anna and Florence. (Seibel Funeral Home, Hazen)

Charles Hecker
DICKINSON -- Charles Hecker, 71, Dickinson, died Jan. 8, 1999, at his home. Services will be 10 a.m. MST Monday at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Dickinson. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Dickinson.

He is survived by his wife, Caroline; three sons, Gary, Howard and Maurice, all of Dickinson; two daughters, Coleen Humann, Bismarck, and Bonnie Hecker, Dickinson; one sister, Margaret DeMore; and one brother, Ernest Hecker, Dickinson. (Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson)

Angel Werre
KINTYRE -- Angel Kylee Werre, the infant daughter of Kevin and Christy (Eberhart) Werre, Kintyre, was stillborn Jan. 7, 1999, in a Bismarck hospital. Memorial services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Napoleon, with burial in Tell Cemetery, rural Kintyre.

She is survived by her parents, Kevin and Christy Werre; four brothers and sisters, Alexandra, Austin, Ashlind and Aaron, all at home; and her grandparents, Judy and Vern Carlson, Braddock, and Clifford and Alice Werre, Kintyre.

Ruth DeBoer
LINTON -- Ruth A. DeBoer, 77, Linton, died Jan. 7, 1999, in the Linton hospital. Services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at Peace Lutheran Church, Linton, with burial in Linton Cemetery.

She is survived by her husband, Herbert; one son, John, Champlin, Minn.; three brothers, Herbert Schiermeister, Waycoff, N.J., Victor Schiermeister, Linton, and Milton Schiermeister, Yuma, Ariz.; and two sisters, Esther Nirschel, Vancouver, Wash., and Lila Luke, Sacramento, Calif. Grace Poole
WILLISTON -- Grace L. Poole, 76, Williston, died Jan. 6, 1999, at her home. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Everson Memorial Chapel, Williston, with burial in Shafer Cemetery, rural Watford City.

She is survived by four daughters, Becki Orpi, Hotchkiss, Colo., Cleo Liberatore, Williston, Paulette Zeig, New Town, and Carol Poole, California; three sons, Richard Stone, Stanley, Randy Stone, Missouri, and Kurt Satter, Broomfield, Colo.; and one sister, Patty Myers, Dunseith.

Thomas Severson
MINOT -- Thomas Lynn Severson, 49, Minot, died Jan. 7, 1999, in a Minot hospital. Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at First Lutheran Church, Minot, with burial in Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; one son, Eric, at home; one daughter, Nicole, at home; his parents, John and Neva Severson, Minot; one brother, Dick, Minot; and two sisters, Susan Dougherty, Homer, Alaska, and Shirlee Grosulak, Mandan. (Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot)

Bertha Hoffman
ASHLEY -- Bertha Hoffman, 90, Ashley, died Jan. 7, 1999, in the Ashley nursing home. Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, Ashley, with burial in Ashley Cemetery.

She is survived by one daughter, Anna Ehresman, Long Lake, S.D.; one sister, Christina Sackmann, Ashley; and four brothers, Gottlieb Maier and Otto Maier, both of Bismarck, and Gottfried Maier and Chris Maier, both of Ashley. (Carlsen Funeral Home, Ashley)

Anna Stedman
CARRINGTON -- Anna Stedman, 80, Carrington, died Jan. 6, 1999, in the Carrington nursing home. Services will be 2 p.m. today at Faith Baptist Church, Carrington, with burial in Grace Cemetery, Grace City.

She is survived by one son, Arlo, Glenfield; two daughters, Charlotte Edwards, Badger, Iowa, and Marion Beardsley, Gowen, Mich.; and two brothers, John Nygaard, Hawthorne, Calif., and Arden Nygaard, Jamestown. (Evans Funeral Home, Carrington)

Florence Schander
CARRINGTON -- Florence E. Schander, 80, Carrington, died Jan. 7, 1999, in the Carrington nursing home. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Grace Lutheran Church, Carrington, with burial in Heaton Cemetery, Heaton.

She is survived by two sons, Terry, Fargo, and Tim, Fessenden; one daughter, Dila Bierdeman, Fargo; one brother, Clifford Bertsch, Wilton; and one sister, Doris Hoff, Bowdon. (Evans Funeral Home, Carrington)

Ella Bittner
WISHEK -- Ella A. Bittner, 98, Wishek, died Jan. 7, 1999, in the Wishek nursing home. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Lehr United Methodist Church, with burial in Lehr Cemetery.

Avis Schuetzle
LEMMON, S.D. -- Avis M. Schuetzle, 89, Lemmon, died Jan. 6, 1999, in a Barrington, Ill., nursing home. Services will be 2 p.m. MST Monday at Lemmon Baptist Church, with burial in Greenhill Cemetery, Lemmon.

She is survived by one son, Laurence, Cary, Ill. (Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Lemmon)

Robert Fischer
DUNN CENTER -- Robert M. Fischer, 21, Dunn Center, died Jan. 8, 1999, in Dunn Center of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Services will be 10 a.m. MST Monday at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Halliday. Further arrangements are pending with Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson.

Suzanne Gustafson
DICKINSON -- Suzanne Gustafson, 51, Dickinson, died Jan. 8, 1999, after a brief battle with cancer in a Dickinson hospital. Services will be 10 a.m. MST Monday at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Dickinson. Arrangements are pending with Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson.
