Leland Hall Sr.
MANDAREE -- Services for Leland Hall Sr., 80, Dickinson, formerly of Mandaree, will be held today at Mandaree High School Gym, with the Revs. Stephen Kranz, Spencer Wilkinson Sr. and David Fisher officiating. Burial will be in Mandaree Congregational Cemetery. Leland Hall Sr. was born Oct. 28, 1920, at Elbowoods, the son of James Hall Sr. and Sarah Fredericks Hall. He was raised in the Independence District of the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation at the Hall family ranch beside the Little Missouri River. He was educated at Elbowoods Elementary School and attended Pipestone Indian Boarding School, Pipestone, Minn. Leland was a lifelong rancher and grew up raising horses and cattle at his parents' ranch by the Little Missouri. He worked with his neighbors in the Independence District as well as with his uncle Charlie Fredericks and cousin Emery Fredericks. Leland was a decorated World War II veteran who served in the European theater. He volunteered for military service at Minneapolis on Jan. 20, 1942; he was a Seaman First Class Machine Gunner abord the USS Bellingham in the Antarctic Ocean off the Bering Straits near the North Cape. One day in the early morning hours just as he got off duty, his ship was torpedoed by a German submarine and sank to the bottom of the ocean. He rescued himself and several of his fellow shipmates. He helped his shipmates get to a lifeboat, where he and his comrades were later picked up by a Russian ship. He was hospitalized for many months. After getting out of the Russian-American hospital, he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy on Oct. 26, 1943, at Great Lakes, Ill. He was decorated by the Russian Navy in 1945 and the U.S. Navy in later years. Although he was disappointed that his country didn't recognize his service sooner, after years of applying on Oct. 14, 1976, the Veterans Administration recognized his service and classified him as a disabled veteran, with a 100 percent disability. Lee was very proud of his military service. He believed strongly that all military groups and veterans should be honored and recognized equally and that it was honorable to serve your country. He was proud of his son, Jerry, for having volunteered to serve in Vietnam. He was also very proud of his sons-in-law, Carson Hood Sr. and Arnie Hammeren, for having volunteered to serve their country. He was a member of Myron B. Johnson American Legion Post 271 and a charter member of Fort Berthold VFW Post 9061. He married Audrey Rabbithead on Dec. 6, 1945, at Sidney, Mont., and they celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary shortly before her passing. After his discharge from the military and his marriage to Audrey, he worked at the Elbowoods Hospital and later purchased cattle to start their own ranch. They had eight children. He was proud of his children and their many accomplishments. He was especially proud that all of his children finished high school because he was not able to and even prouder that six of his children graduated from college. After the Garrison Dam flooded their homelands, Lee and Audrey relocated from their ranch in the bottomlands to rural Mandaree. He cared deeply for his family -- children, sisters, brothers, relatives and friends. He believed in service to community and to country and worked all his life to support the Mandaree community and the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation. He was one of the founders of the Mandaree community, the VFW Post 9061 and the Congregational Church. His traditions and beliefs will go on forever. Lee served three terms on the Tribal Business Council. He represented the western segment (Mandaree) from 1958 to 1964 and served with his father, James Hall Sr., when his father became tribal chairman in 1958. He completed certificates of tribal and state government training and police training at that time. He served as Mandaree school board president during the years 1972, 1973 and 1974. He also served on the McKenzie County Welfare Board for over 25 years. He was proud of all his children and his 10 grandchildren, but was especially proud that his youngest son, Tex, was elected to the Tribal Business Council as west segment (Mandaree) council representative in 1996, and later elected as tribal chairman in November 1998. He gave Tex his name, Ihbudah Hishi, "Red Tip" and the song that was composed for him by the late Pete Hale. The song says "he went to war, his ship went down and it never came back." Lee was a member of the Apuhaga ma gaa Clan (Low Cap) and a child of the Awaxxe Clan (Dripping Dirt). He enjoyed reading the newspapers, watching the news on television, pow wows, rodeos, roping, riding, visiting, walking, traveling and especially playing with his grandchildren. He is survived by his three sons, Leland Jr., Bismarck, Melvin Hall, Dickinson, and Tex Hall, rural Mandaree; four daughters, Judy Hood, New Town, Patsy Hammeren, Bismarck, Debbie Thompson, Dickinson, and Brenda Dvorak, Bismarck; three brothers, James Hall Jr., rural Mandaree, Merval Hall, Fort Yates, and Ed Hall, New Town; four sisters, Rosalie Little Soldier, Twin Buttes, Evelyn Banks, Richmond, Calif., Flora Lubke, New Town, and Dena Bruce, New Town; 10 grandchildren, Melissa Hood, Bismarck, Carson Hood Jr., New Town, Lee Queen, Lawrence Dvorak Jr. and Justin Hammeren, all of Bismarck, Lane and Ty Thompson, Dickinson, Brian Janakowski, Dickinson, Chad Hall, Billings, Mont., and Mandy Hall, Rapid City, S.D. He was preceded in death by his father, James Hall Sr.; his mother, Sarah Fredericks Hall; his grandparents, Ed and Peppermint Malnourie Hall; his brothers, William Hall Sr. and William Jake Hall Jr.; and one sister, Audrey Hall Davy.
