ASHLEY -- Reuben Meidinger, 70, Ashley, died Jan. 23, 2000, in his home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Ashley Baptist Church, with burial in Ashley Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Marlene; one son, Rodney, Ashley; one daughter, Gloria George, Ashley; two brothers, Paul, Ashley, and John, Ellendale; three sisters, Ruth Walker, Ashley, Lenora Isaak, Aberdeen, S.D., and Rose Steinmetz, Kulm; and five grandchildren. (Carlsen Funeral Home, Ashley)

Elouise Silk
FORT YATES -- Elouise L. Uses Arrow Silk, 50, Fort Yates, died Jan. 22, 2000, in the Fort Yates hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Cannon Ball School Gym, with the Rev. William Cosgrove officiating. Burial will be in St. Elizabeth's Catholic Cemetery, Cannon Ball. A wake service begins at 5 p.m. Friday, also at Cannon Ball School Gym.
Elouise was born Jan. 15, 1950, at Cannon Ball, to Noah Uses Arrow Sr. and Charlotte Iron Road. She was raised in Cannon Ball and attended schools at Cannon Ball, Chamberlain, Pierre Indian School, Fort Yates and Solen. She worked at the Nutrition Center in Cannon Ball, Prairie Knights Casino, Solen School and as a Certified Nurse's Aide at the Bismarck Baptist Home. Some of her favorite pastimes were playing bingo, visiting with friends and relatives, home cooking and baking, and attending powwows.
She is survived by her husband, Jerald Silk, Fort Yates; her father, Noah Uses Arrow Sr.; two daughters, Gail Uses Arrow and Christina Red Water, Cannon Ball; two adopted daughters, Bernadette Elk and Andy DeMarce, St. Michaels, and Lila Uses Arrow, Cannon Ball; five sons, Duane and Becky Uses Arrow, Roanoke, Va., Lydell Uses Arrow, Gerard Love Joy, Gerald Love Joy Jr., Melvin and Rose Love Joy, all of Fort Yates; two adopted sons, Lyman Black Cloud and Jerell Joshua, both of Cannon Ball; four sisters, Delphine and Wilson Elk, Fort Yates, Deidre Davidson, Arkansas, Marva and Raymond Frisbee, Corvallis, Ore., and Cheryl Uses Arrow, Bismarck; four brothers, Everette and Jeanie Uses Arrow, Lyle and Carol Uses Arrow, Cannon Ball, Delvin and Brenda Uses Arrow, Sisseton, S.D., Noah Uses Arrow Jr., Bismarck; an adopted brother, Ben Red Horse, Bismarck; 11 grandchildren, including three very special grandsons, Craig Red Water, Tyron Love Joy and Cryus Love Joy. Raymond Schmitz
ELGIN -- Services for Raymond Schmitz, 82, Elgin, will be held at 10:30 a.m. MST Wednesdya at St. John's Catholic Church, New Leipzig, with the Rev. James Reardon officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in the Miner community 16 miles south of Heil.
Special music will be provided by Paula Rivinius. Serving as honorary casketbearers are Hannah Schmitz, Christopher Bren, Bessie Schmitz, Devin Schmitz, Tara Schmitz, Kim Bren, Heather Schmitz, Jessica Schmitz, Lindsey Dettmann, Kayla Dettmann, Aruny Schmitz, Sandra Schmitz and Heather Schoch. Serving as active casketbearers are Sheldon Schmitz, Shawn Schmitz, Patrick Schmitz, Stuart Schmitz, Michael Schmitz, Garret Schmitz, Ethan Schmitz, Nicholas Schmitz and Dale Bren.
Visitation will be from 9:30-10:30 a.m. today at the church.
Raymond John Schmitz was born May 10, 1917, in Pretty Rock Township, Grant County, to John and Paulina (Reimann) Schmitz. He grew up in the Pretty Rock Community and attended Pretty Rock School. In his youth he played on area baseball teams. Raymond farmed and ranched with his father and worked for area neighbors. He was united in marriage to Patricia Gaugler on Nov. 20, 1941, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in the Miner Community. They purchased the Johnny Newman place south of Elgin. Together, they farmed, ranched and raised their family of seven children there. Raymond raised Polled Hereford Cattle for many years. In 1980, due to health reasons, he rented the farmland but continued to raise cattle and horses until 1995. They continued to live on the place until moving into Elgin in August 1999. Raymond has been in failing health the past few years. He passed from this life on Jan. 23, 2000, in the Elgin hospital at the age of 82 years, 8 months and 13 days.
Raymond served on many booards, including the Farmers Union Elevator Board, Pretty Rock School Board, and for many reasons, the Pretty Rock Township Board.
In his early years, Raymond developed a love of baseball and was a self-taught player of the fiddle. Raymond, along with three others, formed the band "Pretty Rock Ramblers" and played for many area dances. He loved watching television, especially Old Time Westerns and the History Channel. He was a terrific waltzer and enjoyed playing cards, especially pinochle. But most of all, he cherished the times spent with his grandchildren. He loved taking them fishing to his favorite spots on the Cannonball and Cedar Rivers, instilling in them a promise never to reveal to anyone where the fish are biting. Raymond was a weather fanatic, he kept in his mind area forecasts and precisely knew forecasts throughout the country.
Keeping him in their fondest memories are his wife, Patricia; three sons and four daughters-in-law, Wayne and Roberta, Center, Sandra Schmitz, New England, Gene and Sharon, Culbertson, Mont., and Tracy and SuAnn, Enderlin; three daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Richard Witkowski, Elgin, LeAnn and Brad Dettmann, Spokane, Wash., and Holli and Omar Alladin, Cannon Falls, Minn.; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Lyle and Frances, Elgin; and one sister, Laurentina Goeres, Lemmon, S.D. Raymond was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Dennis Raymond Schmitz, on Dec. 1, 1996.

Linda Way
MCLAUGHLIN, S.D. -- Linda Way, 44, McLaughlin, died Jan. 20, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 9 a.m. today at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, McLaughlin, with burial in Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis.
She is survived by her mother, Audrey Way, McLaughlin; eight sisters, Cherrene Benz, Mandan, Kathlene Bolte, Pierre, Connie Gupman, Orient, Katherine Shopteau, Hill City, Lisa Wentz, Lemmon, Laura Frank, Lemmon, Rhonda Leing, McIntosh, and Doneen Sanders, Pierre; and her grandmother, Vera Engelhaupt, Pierre. Gladys Rankin
BOWMAN -- Gladys Rankin, 100, Bowman, died Jan. 24, 2000, in the Bowman nursing home. Services will be held at 1 p.m. MST Thursday at Krebsbach Funeral Service, Bowman, with burial in Riverside Cemetery, Marmarth.
She is survived by one daughter, Patricia Peters, Bowman; one son, George, Spearfish, S.D.; and four grandchildren.

Arlene Patterson
BOWMAN -- Arlene M. Patterson, 69, Bowman, died Jan. 23, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Thursday at Bowman Lutheran Church, with burial in Bowman Cemetery.
She is survived by her husband, Virgil; three daughters, Pam Griffin, Scranton, Loree Cook, Bonner Springs, Kan., and Sandi Tivis, Bowman; two brothers, Donald Hofland, Jamestown, and Dean Hofland, harvey; and six grandchildren. (Krebsbach Funeral Service, Bowman)

Frank Oamek
Frank Ludell Oamek, a retired school superintendent, 93, Neche and Kelseyville, Calif., died Jan. 23, 2000, in the Cavalier hospital. He died due to the complications of age.
Always a fighter, he has been a cancer survivor for more than a decade. He was a teacher, coach, principal and/or superintendent of schools in Hazelton, Max, Tappen, Michigan, York, Sheldon and Carson, Lakeview, Ore., Happy Camp, Calif., and in Nebraska. A coach, athlete, avid hunter and fisherman for many years, he retired in 1970, and could be found on the golf course into his 90s.
Frank L. Oamek was born in Carns, Neb., on March 25, 1906, the son of Frank and Alice (Payn) Oamek. He spent his early years living along the Niobrara River and riding a horse, with his siblings, to grade school in Riverview, Neb., graduating from Rock County High School, Bassett, Neb., in 1925. The university of Nebraska presented him with a master of education in 1961. He also studied at Yankton College in South Dakota and Colorado State College in Fort Collins, Colo. Selected to appear in the 1968 edition of "Outstanding Personalities of the West and Midwest," he was also a retired life member of the California Teachers Association and held life teaching and administrative credentials from North Dakota, Nebraska and California. He served as justice of the peace for several years in Tappen; and was a volunteer fireman in Tappen, Max and Hazelton.
On May 28, 1938, he married Martha E. Conmy of Pembina, in Bismarck. She passed away in 1974. He then married Esther Vollrath of Neche on Aug. 12, 1976. They enjoyed spending their summers in Neche, and at their winter home on the banks of Clearlake in Northern California. He was the owner of several farm properties in Pembina County.
He is survived by his wife, Esther; one son and daughter-in-law, Conmy F. and Carole Oamek, Lancaster, Calif.; four grandchildren, Marie E. Oamek, Luneburg, Germany, Karen A. Dietrich and her husband, Brian, Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Sheri L. Oamek, Sarasota, Fla., and Brian F. Oamek, Redlands, Calif.; two great-grandchildren, Caroline M. Dietrich and Claire E. Dietrich, both of Rancho Cucamonga; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Nettie Williamson, Burke, S.D., and Gladys and Clarence Bennett, Bassett, Neb.; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Calvin and Lester.
Graveside services will be held May 28 in the Pembina Cemetery. He will be interned beside his first wife, Martha. (Jensen-Askew Funeral Home, Cavalier)

Helen Barta
STEELE -- Helen Barta, 83, Steele, died Jan. 23, 2000, in the Steele care center from complications of Alzheimer's disease. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Steele United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Marvin Winstryg of Minot officiating. Burial in Woodlawn Cemetery will precede the service.
Helen Charlotte Hill was born July 30, 1916, the daughter of Charles and Hilda (Hansen) Hill in Braddock. She grew up and was educated there and at Valley City State College. She taught in rural schools south of Steele. During this time, Helen met Everett Barta, which was the beginning of a love that has continued for 64 years. In 1938 she moved with her family to Seattle, where she worked until her marriage on June 9, 1940, to Everett. They lived in Bismarck for three years, then took over the Barta family homestead 12 miles south of Steele. In 1947, they moved to Steele where she volunteered her time as a Sunday school teacher, youth leader, 4-H leader and devotional leader at Golden Manor. She was active in Homemakers, WSCS, Birthday Club, Band Boosters, and taught kindergarten in her home. In 1968, she and Everett bought and operated Barta Building Supply until their retirement in 1981, after which they traveled and spent several winters in Nevada and Seattle with their children and grandchildren.
Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Everett; three daughters and one son-in-law, Bonnie and Jack Barthel, Federal Way, Wash., Kathleen Karstensson, Henderson, Nev., and Charette Barta, Minneapolis; four grandchildren, Kirsten Barthel Trusko and her husband, Brett, Racine, Wis., Charles Barthel, Seattle, Kristina Karstensson, Denver, and Linne Karstensson, Henderson; one great-grandchild, Nikolas Everett Trusko, Racine; her sister and brother-in-law, Lillian and Hegge Iverson, Seattle; one sister-in-law, Bernita Hill, Portland; 12 nieces and nephews; and several cousins, including David L. Barth, Bismarck, and Charles Barth, Mandan.
Four sisters and her brother, Chester Hill, preceded her in death.
Helen lived her life to please the Lord and joyfully shared her faith. She was a fun-loving friend, and always had a word of cheer and encouragement for everyone she met -- strangers as well as those she had known for years. Her love of family, devotion to God and sense of humor will be remembered by her many friends and loved ones.

Vincent Fox
MANDAREE -- Vincent Fox, 69, Mandaree, died Jan. 24, 2000, in his home. Arrangements are pending at Fulkerson Funeral Home, Watford City.

Clyde Holman
WATFORD CITY -- Clyde Holman, Glendale, Ariz., formerly of Watford City, died Jan. 20, 2000, in Glendale. Arrangements are pending at Fulkerson Funeral Home, Watford City.

Lea Rossow
HERREID, S.D. -- Lea Rossow, 92, Herreid, died Jan. 24, 2000, in her home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Peace Lutheran Church, Herreid. Further arrangements are pending at Larson's Funeral Home, Mobridge.

Richard Grenz
Richard "Dick" Grenz, 69, died Jan. 24, 2000 after a 16 year battle with cancer. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, at First United Methodist Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Kermit Culver officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery with full military rites provided by V.F.W. Post No. 1326.
Richard "Dick" Grenz was born Sept. 23, 1930 at Hazelton, the son of Jacob and Lydia (Serr) Grenz. They lived on the farm southwest of Hazelton until 1937. The family then moved to Washburn, returning to Hazelton in 1942. Richard graduated from Hazelton High School in 1948 and from Interstate Business College in 1949. He was employed by the Bank of Hazelton and the First National Bank in Bismarck before entering the U.S. Army in October 1950. He was stationed in Germany and after his discharge in September, 1953, he returned to 1st National Bank and it was there that he met Elaine Krein. They were married on June 27, 1954, at Bismarck Baptist Church. He was a ND State Bank Examiner before he met Elaine and moved to Strasburg in 1960, where he was president of the Strasburg National Bank.
While in Strasburg, he was active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 6264; ND State Commander in 1975-76; treasurer of the Strasburg Public School District; President of the ND Banking Association in 1969; bowling and golfing leagues; and a member of the United Methodist Church in Linton. During his spare time, Dick enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing. In December 1980, he sold the bank and they moved back to Bismarck where he made a career change and became part owner of Golden West Travel. In 1994, he and Elaine purchased Viking Travel. They retired from the travel business in 1996.
In Bismarck, Richard was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars 1326; BPOE 1199; Moose Club; Amvets, American Legion, and the First United Methodist Church. The past 10 years were spent at their homes in Peoria, Ariz., and Bismarck. Golfing became a favorite pastime in both places.
Grateful to have shared their life are his wife, Elaine Marcella Krein Grenz; one son, Gail Grenz, Dallas, Texas; one daughter and son-in-law, Jack and Cindy Lee Kramer, Kingman, Ariz.; five grandchildren, Amber and Amanda Kramer and Andrew, Jaime and Christopher Grenz; one brother and sister-in-law, Harry and Edna Grenz, Hazelton; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Donald and Martha McDonald, and Frank and Irene Ostlund, all of Minneapolis; and one sister-in-law, and one brother-in-law, Tom and Verla Geloff, Bismarck. He also leaves behind aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Lydia; one brother, Elmer; and one sister, Ruby. Also preceding him in death were his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ben and Luella Krein. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)
