DICKINSON -- Edna Gilbert, 93, formerly of Dickinson, died March 11, 2000 in the Killdeer care center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Wednesday, at River of Life Assembly Church, Dickinson. Burial will be in Dickinson Cemetery.
She is survived by one daughter, Kathy Bender, Killdeer; two sons, Everett, Williston, and Paul, Cheyenne, Wyo.; one sister, Dorothy Curley, Canyon Lake, Calif.; and two brothers, Clifford Paulson, Woodland, Calif., and Paul Paulson, Dickinson; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Jack C. Hoffman, 73, 225 E. Kavaney Dr., Bismarck, died March 13, 2000 in a Bismarck hospital. Arrangements are pending with Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan.

Lora Huffman
DICKINSON -- Lora Huffman, 86, Dickinson, formerly of Phoenix, Ariz., died March 10, 2000 in the Dickinson hospital. Private family entombment will take place in the Dickinson Mausoleum Chapel.
She is survived by one son, John Huffman, Payson, Ariz., one daughter, Barbara Peterson, Dickinson; four brothers, Harold, John, Dan, and Norman Rhinehart, all of Arizona; one sister, Joyce Robertson, Arizona; and five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Patricia Koller
TIOGA -- Patricia Koller, 64, Albany, N.Y., and formerly of Tioga, died March 11, 2000 in an Albany hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Tioga. Burial will be in United Cemetery.
She is survived by one daughter, Christine Koller, Kingston, N.Y.; three brothers, W. Thomas Joyce and Dr. Michael Joyce, both of Fargo; and Daniel Joyce, Tioga; one sister, Mary Ellen Kirn, Mariposa, Calif. (Fulkerson Funeral Home, Tioga)

Ellen Novy
WING -- Ellen Novy, 89, Wing, died March 11, 2000 at her home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, with the Rev. Charlie Heidt officiating. Burial will be in the Wing Cemetery, Wing.
Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. today, 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Wednesday, and 9 a.m. until the time of service Thursday, at Eastgate Funeral Service, where a rosary will be said at tonight at 6 p.m. Ellen was born July 9, 1910 near Denhoff, to William and Mary (Nolan) Ryan. She moved to the rural Wing area at a young age and was educated in rural Burleigh County Schools.
Ellen married Anton Novy on Oct. 25, 1931 at Wing. They lived on a farm in rural Wing until retiring, and moving into Wing, in 1976. Anton died in 1994.
Ellen is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Mary and Andrew Eckholm and Eileen Novy; three sons, James, Joseph and William Novy, all of Wing; two grandsons and their wives, Daryl and Shelly Eckholm, Wing, and Curtis and Lisa Eckholm, Mandan; one granddaughter, Carol Eckholm, Bismarck; five great-grandchildren, Annika, Erika and Ethan Eckholm, Wing, and Larissa and Chase Eckholm, Mandan.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Anton; one daughter, Josephine; one sister and two brothers. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)

Russell Otto
GRACE CITY -- Russell Otto, 79, Grace City, died March 12, 2000 at his home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, at United Methodist Church, Grace City. Further arrangements are pending with Evans Funeral Home, Carrington.

Walter Sailer
HAZEN -- Walter E. Sailer, 78, Hazen, died March 12, in the Beulah care center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Wednesday, at Peace Lutheran Church, with the Revs. Duane Hanson and Walt Wolff officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers will be Michael Mattheis, Jason Mattheis, John Oster, Fred Oberlander, Kevin Herrmann and Randy Christman.
Visitation hours will be from 2-7 p.m. MST today at Seibel Funeral Home, Hazen.
Walter was born March 15, 1921 at Krem, a son of George H. and Martha (Pempeit) Sailer. He was raised and attended rural school near Krem, graduating from Hazen High School in 1942.
Walter served in the CCC at Medicine Lake, Mont. for a time. He had various jobs in the area. On Oct. 6, 1949, he married Delphine Herrmann at St. John Wittenburg Church, north of Zap and they farmed north of Hazen. In 1960, they moved to Hazen and Walter worked for Knoell Sales and Service. In 1962, he became employed with West River Telephone, retiring in 1986 as the purchasing agent. Following his retirement, Walter worked part time for Seibel Funeral Homes. He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Hazen and a past council president. Walter was very instrumental in the building of the addition and the building fund.
He was also a member of the Hazen Chamber of Commerce, Hazen Hospital Board, Hazen School Board, Hazen Planning and Zoning Board, Water Management Board, Hazen Lions Club and Lutheran Brotherhood District 8230. One of Walter's greatest joys was bookwork. He loved spending time with his family and had a love of cars.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Delphine; one daughter and son-in-law, Gloria and Jim Mattheis, Hazen; one son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Kathy Sailer, Bismarck; five grandchildren, Michael, Jason and Amy Mattheis, Kendra and Kelsey Sailer; three sisters, Velma Wylie, Dearborn Heights, Mich., Veona Jorgensen, Indianapolis, Ind., Leila Simpson, Kirkland, Ohio; five brothers, Vern, Deadwood, S.D., Roland, Rapid City, S.D., Martin, Vermillion, S.D., Jerry, Rapid City, and the Rev. Dell, Thiensville, Wis.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Walter was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Rev. Lawrence, Gary and Arnold; and two infant sisters.
In lieu of flowers, the memorials are preferred to Peace Lutheran Church Building Fund. (Seibel Funeral Home, Hazen)

Adolf Schmidt
HETTINGER -- Adolf Schmidt, 83, Hettinger, died March 9, 2000 in a Peoria, Ariz. hospice. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MST Wednesday, at Hettinger Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Stephen Sherer officiating. Burial will be in Hettinger Cemetery.
Casketbearers will be Kevin Schneider, Chuck Senn, Bruce Mayer, Carter Hoffland, Craig Perfett, and Arden Saunders. All formers employees, members of the Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star, Shrine Club and friends are considered honorary bearers.
Memorials have been established to the Hettinger Hospice, Batten's Association, and Juvenile Diabetes Association.
Visitation will be from 1-7:30 p.m. today, at Evanson-Jensen, Walby Chapel, Hettinger, and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. A family service and Masonic Rites will be at 7:30 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.
Adolf Schmidt was born Gustav Adolf Frederick Emil Schmidt in Iserlohn, Germany on Nov. 14, 1916 to Gustav Adolf and Helen Henrietta Agnes Tenhaeff Schmidt. He was raised and educated in Hagen, Germany as a Master Chef and Baker in both German and Swedish foods. He worked as a chef on the ships owned and operated by Standard Oil, which took him all over the world. Not being able to renew his Visa without serving in Germany's military, he joined the Navy prior to World War II. While in the Navy, his best friend, Walter Schlichting introduced him to Leni Berta Frieda Schlichting. It was love at first sight and on March 8, 1940, they were married in Hamburg, Germany.
At the end of World War II, Adolf worked for the Swedish and German Red Cross managing their kitchens in Hamburg. While there, he also played soccer for St. Pauli, a professional soccer team. In July of 1951, Adolf and Leni left Hamburg for the United States with their daughter, Elke. They arrived in Hettinger on the 13th of August, 1951. Adolf began working as a chef for his cousin Werner Tenhaeff at the City Cafe. He later purchased the cafe and the adjoining Farmer's Union Coop grocery store and totally remodeled the structure into what was known for years as Adolf's Gasthaus. After 34 years in business, he and Leni retired, selling both businesses which were destroyed by fire two months later.
Adolf was a member of the Hettinger Lutheran Church, Hettinger Masonic Lodge No. 93, Royal Arch Masons, Lemmon Commandery No. 25, El Zagal Shrine Temple and Eagles Aerie No. 3102. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, having coffee with his friends and taking trips to the Black Hills which reminded him of his homeland. He also loved to hunt, tend to his yard, and prune his roses, as long as health permitted. Adolf enjoyed keeping up to date with his former soccer team, as well as watching the Vikings, Twins, Phoenix Suns, ice-skating and tennis on television.
His beloved Leni passed away on April 9, 1996 and he then spent his winters in Arizona. He is survived by his daughter, Elke Brock and her husband, Jim, Phoenix, Ariz.; one son, Kent Schmidt and his wife, Karla, McAlester, Okla.; four granddaughters, Shari Peterson and her husband, David, Hettinger, Monika Cox and her husband, Daniel, Mandan, Marissa and Lauren Schmidt, McAlester, Okla.; one grandson, Collin Schmidt, McAlester; four great-granddaughters, Jaci and Ashley Huether, Alexis and Cassidy Peterson, Hettinger; three half-brothers, Klaus and Maryanne, Dieter and Roswitha, and Berthold and Edeltraut Schmidt, Hagen, Germany; three sisters-in-law, Ursula Schmidt, Hagen, Germany, Ursula and John Gillespie, Glasgow, Scotland, and Maria Nevermann, Hamburg, Germany, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two infant daughters, Renate and Barbel, his parents, his brother, Gunter; his half-brother, Heiner; his stepmother, Hedwig Schmidt; his cousin, Werner Tenhaeff; his brother-in-law, Walter, Theo and Herbert Schlichting; his parents-in-law, Walter and Wilhelmina Schlichting; and his stepfather-in-law, Erich Schiefer, all of Germany.

Ivan Sherman
Ivan Oliver Sherman, 87, Menoken, died March 11, 2000 in the Steele nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, with the Rev. Robert Olson officiating. Burial will be in Menoken Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Wednesday, at Eastgate Funeral Service, and for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Ivan was born on July 26, 1912 in Fayette County, West Union, Iowa, the son of Marvin and Bernice (Tatro) Sherman. When he was five years old, the family moved to North Dakota on a farm north of Menoken Grove. He was raised and educated in Menoken Township. On Dec. 6, 1936, Ivan married Gladys Tucker in Bismarck. They both worked at the Vinton Craven farm. In 1937, they moved up to the farm in Francis Township. During the summer of 1937, Ivan worked in a traveling medicine show setting up the stages and selling Kalo products. In 1938, they bought the farm from Tebbo Harms. Ivan was a member of the Flying Farmers of America, where he flew an Aeronca Champion and later a Piper Cub. He spent many years hunting mule deer in the badlands with his friend Arnold Neugebauer. Ivan was a skilled pool player often bring home first place in tournaments at McKenzie and Sterling. Ivan enjoyed visiting with family and friends, attending picnics and other social gatherings. He farmed and ranched until he was 85 years old. He was admitted to the Golden Manor in Steele in August 1997. Ivan never retired, he always said, I've just got too much work to do.
Ivan is survived by four sons and three daughters-in-law, Marvin, and Merle and Helene, all of Menoken, Michael and Jeanette, Bismarck, and Maurice and Linda, Driscoll; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; one brother, Clarence, Liberty Heights, Mandan; one sister, Charlotte (Totty) Buechele, Davenport, Iowa; and special friends, Peggy Boe, Menoken, Amy Wolff, Steele, and Morgan Johnson, Menoken.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys; his parents; his brothers, Albert, Chet, Charles and Perry; one sister, Florence; one daughter and son-in-law, Maureen and Ronald Neugebauer; one granddaughter, Michelle Neugebauer; and two grandsons, Ryan Neugebauer and Leslie Sherman. Russell Topp
MCHENRY -- Russell E. Topp, 77, McHenry, died March 11, 2000 at his home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, at Grace Lutheran Church, Grace City, with burial in Grace City Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Vera; one son, Jerry, Fargo; one daughter, Kathy Grubb, Tioga; five grandchildren and three great-granddaughters; one brother, Wayne, New Rockford; and one sister, Margaret Rost, West Fargo. (Evans Funeral Home, Carrington)

Tillie Ulrich
ELGIN -- Tillie Ulrich, 81, Elgin, died March 10, 2000 at her home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MST Wednesday, at St. John's Catholic Church, New Leipzig, with the Rev. James Reardon officiating, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1-7:30 p.m. today at Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Elgin, and for one hour prior to the service at the church in New Leipzig on Wednesday.
A rosary service will be said at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Elgin. Ottilia Elizabeth Hoff, "Tillie" was born on Dec. 5, 1918, in rural Elgin to Peter and Ottilia (Ferderer) Hoff. She was born along the Heart River and in her teenage years moved with her parents to a farm in Leipzig Township. She attended a country school and when Tillie was in her mid-twenties, she moved with her parents to Solen. She was united in marriage to Edward H. Ulrich Sr. on Oct. 18, 1955 at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Cannon Ball. They began their life together on the original Ulrich homestead in Huskin Township. Tillie and Edward farmed and ranched there together and later on their son, Eddy, joined them. Tillie and Edward continued to live on the place. In 1995, she had open heart surgery and since then has been in failing health.
Tillie enjoyed crocheting, cooking, baking and listening to old time music. Her most joyous times were the times she spent with her family and grandchildren. She was a member of the Antelope Homemakers Club, and St. John's Catholic Church Altar Society.
Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Edward H. Ulrich Sr.; one son and daughter-in-law, Edward B. and Pam Ulrich; two grandchildren, Brandon and Kendra Ulrich, all of Elgin; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Tillie was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter in infancy who was born and died on June 25, 1957; three brothers, Pete, Andrew and Carl Hoff; three sisters, Elizabeth Winberger, Minnie Leingang, Caroline Leingang; and a twin brother and sister in infancy.

Clara Wagner
VALLEY CITY -- Clara Wagner, 82, Valley City, died March 19, 2000 in a Valley City care center. Arrangements are pending with Peterson-Johnson-Schuldt Funeral Home, Valley City.

Clovia White Lightning
FARGO -- Clovia Helen White Lightning, 39, Fargo, died March 11, 2000 in Fargo. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, at St. James Episcopal Church, Cannon Ball, with the Rev. John Floberg officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
A wake begins at 5 p.m. Friday, at the Veteran's Memorial Building, Cannon Ball.
Clovia was born March 18, 1960 at Fort Yates to John White Lightning and Theresa Buckley. She was raised and educated in Cannon Ball, attending Pierre Indian Learning Center, and Chilocco Indian School, Chilocco, Okla. She enjoyed prayer circle at the Native American Christian Ministry in Fargo, reading and visiting relatives and family.
She is survived by five daughters, Celeste Redstone, Cynthia Redstone, both of Minot, Shalako White Lightning, Cannon Ball, Nellie "Maggie" Brave Bull and Felita Brave Bull, both of Valley City; one son, Lee Brave Bull, Valley City; seven sisters, Vera White Lightning, Carmelita White Lightning, Neva White Lightning, Johnell Gullickson, Karen White Lightning, all of Cannon Ball; Patricia Buss, Fargo, Candace White Lightning, Rapid City, S.D.; two brothers, Hadley and Herschel White Lightning, Cannon Ball; three grandchildren, Krystand Standing Bear, Quintan Standing Bear, Michael Paul; two uncles, William Buckley, Fort Yates, and Arnold Black Hoop, Little Eagle, S.D.
Clovia was preceded in death by her parents; her grandparents; and two infant daughters and one infant son. (Perry Funeral Home, Mandan)
