Manuel "Manny" Aaron

Manuel "Manny" Aaron, 76, well known Devils Lake area sportsman died Sunday, Dec. 6, 2003.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at the Bethel Evangelical Free Church, Devils Lake. Rev. Bruce Dick and Rev. Darrin Cox will officiate.

Honorary pallbearers will be Richard Nelson and Mardel Robinson.

Manuel Augustus Aaron was born Dec. 23, 1926 in Scott, Ark., the son of Manuel A. and Midge Gremmett Aaron, Sr. He spent his school years in Arkansas and went to the University of Indiana for a year. At the age of 16 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and spent 5 1/2 years on the original USS Saratoga as an Aviational Firefighter. During this time he was awarded the Navy Cross, the Purple Heart with 3 Stars and a Good Conduct Ribbon.

After a few years of odd jobs, he joined the Brunswick Corporation and worked in many states across the country. He finally settled in the Lake Region area and was working at Devils Lake Sioux Manufacturing in Fort Totten where he retired in 1986.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He started his own bait and tackle shop out at Creel Bay. He ran this for several years. Then he became a hunting and fishing guide and he knew the Lake Region extremely well. At this time he worked at Ed's Bait Shop and fished in many tournaments with Ed's as his sponsor. He had to give the guide service up in the late spring of 2002 due to poor health, but when ever he could, you would find him and his Warrior on Devils Lake pulling in the walleye one by one.

On June 24, 1977 he married Patricia Degenstein and June 22, 1992 she passed away due to cancer.

He is survived by his stepchildren, Cheryl (Al) Rodlin of Devils Lake, Claudette Degenstein of Presscott Valley, AZ, and Cory (Eula) Degenstein, also of Presscott Valley; grandson, Jason Degenstein of Starweather, presently serving in the National Guard, stationed at Grand Forks Air Base; and many friends around the area, specifically, his very special friend Racheal Langstaff of Devils Lake; Rich Nelson and Mardel Robinson of Grand Forks; Darwin and Donna Brokke of Devils Lake; Ray Brokke of Grand Forks and Bill and Julie Sackenreuter of Devils Lake.

Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake, is in charge of arrangements.

Josephine E. Wold

Josephine E. Wold, 90, of Devils Lake, ND formerly of Edmore, ND, found eternal peace early Sunday morning, Dec. 7, 2003 at Good Samaritan Center, Devils Lake.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Devils Lake. Rev. Harold Ovre will officiate and burial will be in the Devils Lake cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Josephine's Grandsons, Michael Lee, Kevin Lee and Allen Lee and also serving will be Robert Freije, Rodney Haugland and Jeff Riggin.

Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Tuesday, from 1-9 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7 p.m. Visitation on Wednesday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral service.

Josephine Emilie Sobak was born Nov. 6, 1913 at home in Newland Township, Ramsey County, east of Edmore, ND. She was the only daughter and the second oldest child of five born to Olaf and Oline (Aasvang) Sobak. She was baptized at St. Ansgar Lutheran Church, Edmore. On July 22, 1914, at 8 months of age, her family boarded a train for Dodson, Montana where her parents homesteaded for four years. They returned to Edmore in 1918. She received her Christian education at Concordia Lutheran Church, Edmore, being confirmed there in 1930. Her diploma from North Dakota Public School was received on March 2, 1929 for completion of 8th Grade at Fancher #2. She graduated from Edmore High School on May 31, 1935.

She married Hugh E. Curry on Jan. 4, 1939 at the Concordia Lutheran Parsonage, Edmore by Rev. M.A. Braaten. Witnesses were Martin Sobak and Borghild Fossum. They made their home in Devils Lake. A daughter, Janet Rae, was born in 1941. When first married Josephine was a Jr. Leader for Farmers Union students. She was employed at Nakota Hatchery for 10 years candling eggs with seasonal duties. During this time she also had an evening job cleaning at The Hocking Dental Office. She was then employed at Montgomery Wards as Stockroom Clerk. Hugh E. Curry died Oct. 3, 1957.

On June 21, 1958 Josephine married Jacob M. Wold at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Devils Lake with Rev. E. Leland Rude officiating. Witnesses were Alvin Helland and Janet Curry. They adopted a daughter, Jana Loy in September 1961. In 1964 they moved to Derrick, ND where her husband, Jacob, managed the Farmers Elevator Co. After a fire in 1965, that destroyed the elevator, they returned to Devils Lake. She helped raise her niece, Valerie Sobak and was a home day care provider for over 20 years until her retirement. Jacob M. Wold died on Nov. 30, 2001.

She has been a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church since 1941, member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, IOOF Rebekah Lodge and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Ladies Auxiliary.

The final chapter of life was lived at Good Samaritan Center, Devils Lake. A special thank you to those who cared for her.

Kind, caring, loving, generous and dedicated are all words that describe Josephine. She spent most of her time doing things for others. Helping her family and friends brought her much joy. We have lost a loving mother. She gave us inner strength, honesty and unwavering love. We will deeply miss her.

She is survived by daughters, Janet (Duane) Lee, Reynolds, ND and Jana Wold, Devils Lake; grandsons, Michael Lee, Reynolds; Kevin (Julie) Lee, McKinney, TX; Allen (Nicole) Lee, Fargo, ND; granddaughter, Krista Wold, Devils Lake; great-granddaughter, Brooke Olivia Lee, McKinney; seven nieces, eight nephews and many who call her Mommy Jo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Hugh E. Curry and Jacob M. Wold; brothers, Melvin, Phillip, Martin and Harold Sobak; one niece and four nephews.

Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake, is in charge of arrangements.

Donald J. Piatz

Donald J. Piatz, 39, of Cooperstown, ND, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003 at Golden Lake in Steele Co., while ice fishing with friends and was pronounced dead at Union Hospital, in Mayville, ND.

Funeral services were held Dec. 4 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cooperstown with interment in the St. George Catholic cemetery, Cooperstown.

Quam-Plaisted-Cushman Funeral Home, Cooperstown, was in charge of arrangements.

Isabel Nelson

Isabel Nelson, 98, of Devils Lake, ND formerly of the Sarles/Clyde, ND area, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003 at the Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake. Rev. Kenneth Iverson will officiate. A graveside service will be held in the Sarles cemetery, Sarles, ND at 1:45 p.m. on Friday.

Wylia B. Stutlien

Wylia B. Stutlien, 69, of New Rockford, ND, died Friday, Dec. 5, 2003 at Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd in New Rockford.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Evans Funeral Home in New Rockford. Burial will be at the Grace City cemetery, Grace City, ND.

Evans Funeral Home, New Rockford, is in charge of arrangements.

Emmanuel "Manny" Aaron

Emmanuel "Manny" Aaron, 76 of Devils Lake, ND died Saturday evening, Dec. 6, 2003 at his home in Devils Lake.

Dale Vande Hoven, 42, of Jamestown, ND, formerly of Carrington, ND, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003 at his home.

Arrangements are pending with Evans Funeral Home, Carrington.

Mary Ann Voeller

Mary Ann Voeller, 92, of Rugby, ND, died Friday, Dec. 5, 2003 at Heart of America Medical Center in Rugby.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Little Flower Catholic Church, Rugby, with the Rev. Kevin Boucher officiating. Burial will be in the Little Flower Catholic cemetery.

Visitation will be held today from 3-9 p.m., with a Rosary-Wake Service at 6 p.m. and Tuesday from 8-10:15 a.m. There will be no reviewal at the church.

Patricia J. Lee

Patricia J. Lee, 65, of Hoyt Lakes, MN, died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003 in St. Paul, MN.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 13, at 11 a.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Doyon, ND.

There will be no visitation.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to The American Cancer Society.

Patricia was born June 14, 1938 to Howard and Jeanette Rice in Devils Lake, ND. She married Richard A. Lee on June 14, 1958. Pat obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of North Dakota and taught elementary school immediately following their marriage.

Pat then changed vocations, becoming a homemaker and mother, with a focus on the raising of three boys. Once the boys were through school, Pat again changed careers, working as a librarian and a driver-training instructor.

Pat was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church of Hoyt Lakes and served as the president of a local chapter of the American Cancer Society.

She is survived by her sons, Carlton (Linda), of St. Paul; Dr. James (Julie), of Rochester, NY; and Mark (Patti), of Wyoming; six grandchildren; and many warm memories and loving friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard.

Willie F. Thompson

Willie F. Thompson, 94, of Minnewaukan, ND, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003, at the Towner County Living Center in Cando, ND.

The Nelson Funeral Home, Minnewaukan, ND, is in charge of arrangements.

Bruce M. Anderson

Bruce M. Anderson, 77, of Valley City, ND, died Friday, Nov. 28, 2003 at Meritcare Hospital in Fargo, ND.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Epworth United Methodist Church, with Rev. Steve C. Johnson officiating. Interment will be in Woodbine cemetery, Valley City.

Visitation will be today from 1-8 p.m. and Tuesday from 9 a.m. to noon at the Peterson-Johnson-Schuldt Funeral Home, Valley City.

Bruce Mervyn Anderson was born July 14, 1926 at Wimbledon, ND, the son of Mervyn and Frances (Burchill) Anderson. He grew up at Carrington, ND and graduated from Carrington High School. He started college at Valley City State University, but left college to serve with the US Army Air Corps during WWII. Following his discharge, he returned to North Dakota and attended the University of North Dakota. While there, he lettered in track.

On Aug. 15, 1948 he was married to Mary Nicolson at Carrington. Bruce taught school, coached and was an administrator in several ND communities, including McVille (49-52), Cando (52-55), Nekoma (56-58), Crary (59-63), Wyndmere (63-68) and Valley City (68-80). In 1980, Bruce resigned his position as the Valley City Superintendent of Schools to take the position of Executive Director for the North Dakota High School Activities Association, a position he held until his retirement in 1988.

He was very active in the Babe Ruth baseball program. He served as the ND State Babe Ruth Commissioner, Regional Director for the Midwest Plains Region, National Director for Babe Ruth Baseball and on the International Board of Directors for Babe Ruth Baseball. In 1993 he was inducted into the ND Babe Ruth Baseball Hall of Fame. He and his wife, Mary, were inducted into the North Dakota Speech and Theatre Association Hall of Fame in 1996, even though his wife had passed away in 1979. He was a member of the 50-year letterman's club at the University of North Dakota.

On June 23, 1981 he married Wanda Personius at Valley City. The couple made their home in Valley City and spent the winter months in Arizona.

Bruce was an avid golfer, hunter and loved to watch sports. He enjoyed helping Wanda do gardening and took many trips to watch his grandchildren participate in their sporting events. He also supported UND, Valley City State University and Hi-Liner athletic events.

He is survived by his wife, Wanda; three children, Dr. Jeffrey Anderson, Montevideo, MN; Nancy (Craig) Johnson, Wadena, MN; and Tobyn Anderson, Washington, D.C.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a brother, Bill (Linda) Anderson, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary and his parents.

Peterson-Johnson-Schuldt Funeral Home, Valley City, is in charge of arrangements.

Willie F. Thompson

Willie F. Thompson, 94, Minnewaukan, ND, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003, at the Towner County Living Center in Cando.

Memorial Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Minnewaukan with Pastor Betty J. Stedman and Pastor Donald Schmid officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Music will be from vocalists Reed & Eric Anderson, Rhonda Howard and Rita Halvorson, with Sid Bingaman, organist.

There will be no visitation.

Honorary casket bearers will be Irene's grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nephews, custom harvesting employees and the staff of the Towner County Living Center.

Willie Floyd Thompson was born Jan. 22, 1909 at Strathcona, MN to Severin and Christine (Anderson) Thompson. In 1920, he moved with his family to North Dakota and lived on several farms in the Minnewaukan and Brinsmade areas.

Willie married Irene Lowe on March 29, 1933 in East Grand Forks. The couple farmed near Thompson, ND for nine years. They moved to Riggin Township of Benson County, rural Minnewaukan and farmed until retiring in 1990. Willie and Irene also operated a custom harvesting business from 1944 to 1986. They moved to Minnewaukan in 1991. Irene Thompson died Jan. 1, 2003. Willie became a resident of the Towner County Living Center at Cando in August of this year.

Willie was confirmed at the Big Coulee Lutheran Church rural Minnewaukan. He was an active member of the Brinsmade Lutheran Church, serving on various boards. Following its closure, he became of a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Minnewaukan. He had also served on the Riggin Township Board.

Willie loved music. He played the violin, banjo and guitar and also sang in the Brinsmade quartet for many years. He attended many of the District and State Democratic NPL Conventions. Willie loved to play cards and always had a couple of decks with him at family gatherings.

He is survived by a son, Donnie (Carol) Thompson of Minnewaukan; three grandchildren, Carren (Bob) Anderson and Lori (Dwight) O'Connell, both of Minnewaukan and Vern (Cindy) Thompson of Bismarck; eight great-grandchildren, Reed Anderson, Eric Anderson, Kristi (Adam) Anderson, Corey (Sarah) O'Connell, Malorie O'Connell, Sheena O'Connell, Will Thompson and Kathryn Thompson; three great-great grandchildren, Brett and Seth O'Connell and Isabella Anderson; a sister, Lillie Bingaman of Churchs Ferry, ND; two brothers, Bennie (Thelma) Thompson of Minnewaukan and Raymond Thompson of San Martos, CA and a sister-in-law: Gladys Jensen of East Grand Forks, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; two sisters, Laurine Witmer & Alice Blegen; and five brothers, Elmer, Sherman, Sanford, Roy and Clarence Thompson.

The Nelson Funeral Home of Minnewaukan is in charge of the arrangements.
