Sophie Vesta

Sophie Irene Ryan was born at Antler, ND, on November 13, 1918. The family moved to Grand Forks, ND, where she grew up. She graduated from Grand Forks Central High School in 1936 and received her nurse’s training at Deaconess Hospital in Grand Forks. Sophie served in the US Army Nurse Corps during WW II. She was stationed overseas in England and in France.

On June 12, 1947, Sophie was united in marriage to Elwood Vesta, at Bismarck, ND. Following their marriage they made their home in DeKalb, IL. Sophie worked for ten years as the Assistant Director of Nursing at Shabbona Nursing Home in Shabbona, IL.

In 1989, Sophie and Elwood moved to Moorhead. They later lived at Eventide the Fairmont, in Moorhead. In May of 2000, Sophie became a resident of Eventide Lutheran Home, where she died on Friday, April 30, 2004, at the age of 85. Her deep Christian faith and her compassion for people were evident to all who knew her.

Sophie is survived by her husband, Elwood, Moorhead; a daughter, Debbie (Mark) Johnson, Peoria, IL; three sons, Dale (Leanne) Vesta, Sycamore, IL, Dewey (Esther) Vesta, Moorhead, and Darrel Vesta, Dublin, Ohio; and six grandchildren, Kristine (Craig) Tamblyn, Katie and Ryan Vesta, Brent and Brad Vesta, and Sarah Johnson. Sophie was preceded in death by her parents, Bastian and Sarah Ryan; and four sisters, Marie Nelson, Delores Rasmussen, Florene Skaff and Pauline Ellingson.

Visitation: Tuesday, from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM, Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead, and one hour before the funeral, at the church.

Funeral service: Wednesday, May 5, 2004, at 10:30 AM, Triumph Lutheran Brethren Church, Moorhead, Minnesota.

Burial: Riverside cemetery, Moorhead, MN.

Albert Vastag

Albert Paul Vastag, age 90, of Fargo, ND, formerly of Hebron, ND, died on Thursday, March 11, 2004, at his home in Riverview Place, Fargo, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Born Herbert Marvin Maas, the third of seven children to John and Katherine Maas, on Feb. 28, 1914, in Hebron, ND. He was adopted by Mr. & Mrs. George Vastag in 1925, and grew up in the rural Hebron area.

Albert married Eleanore Hartmann on Oct. 8, 1940 in Richardton, ND. They made their initial home north of Richardton and later settled in Hebron. He married Barbara Badinger in 1983 in Hebron. Albert lived in Hebron until 1998, when he moved to Riverview Place in Fargo.

Albert was a talented craftsman and enjoyed making items for his children and grandchildren. In his spare time he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and attending rodeos.

He was preceded in death by his wives, Eleonore and Barb; his parents; brothers, Art, Christ and Lloyd Maas, and sister, Sophia Maas.

Albert is survived by ten children, Harold (Bonnie) Vastag, Oneida, WI, Raymond (Flo) Vastag, Indianapolis, IN, Ruth (Gus) Sailer, Beulah, ND, Dorothy (Ken) Schneeweis, Hebron, Duane (Marlene) Vastag, Mandan, ND, Roger Vastag, Indianapolis, Darlene Murphy, Phoenix, AZ, Karen (Gordon) Gunsch, Landers, WY, John (Char) Vastag, Fargo and Betty (Rick) Marthaller, Oakes, ND; brothers, Floyd Maas of Crocker, SD, and Willard Maas of Spokane, WA; thirty three grandchildren; and thirty two great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Hospice of the Red River Valley, Riverview Place, or St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Hebron, where Albert was a member.

A visitation will be held Friday, March 12th, from 4 PM to 7 PM in the chapel of Riverview Place in Fargo. A prayer service will be held there Friday at 7 PM.

In Hebron, a visitation will be held Sunday, 2 PM to 5 PM, with a prayer service at 3 PM, in St. Anne's Catholic Church. The funeral mass is Monday, March 15, 2003, at 10 Am, also in St Anne's.

Burial will follow at St. Anne's Catholic cemetery, Hebron.

Roger Tellinghuisen

Roger B. Tellinghuisen, age 68, of Fargo, ND, died on Friday, April 9, 2004 in a hospital in St. Cloud, MN. Roger Bernerd Tellinghuisen, the son of Tilman and Norma (Bowitz).

Tellinghuisen, was born February 29, 1936, at Bowden, ND, where he grew up and received his education. As a young man, Roger lived in Fargo, ND, for three years. In 1955, Roger entered the US Marine Corps. He served in the US and overseas in Japan. He was discharged in 1959. While in the Marines, Roger married Nancy Larson. After his discharge, they made their home in Fargo.

Roger worked at Mitchell’s TV and Appliance in Fargo, and part time for Red Owl store. In 1970, Roger purchased Mitchell’s TV and Appliance, which he operated until the early 1990’s when he sold the store to Darrell Heflin. On April 5, 1980, Roger married Clara Grove Simonson. They made their home in Fargo. After selling Mitchell’s, they traveled extensively and operated an antique business, which took them to antique shows around the country. They where currently coming home from Florida, where they had participated in an antique show in Jacksonville, when Roger took ill.

Roger is survived by his wife, Clara, Fargo; a son Michael (Deb) Tellinghuisen, Horace, ND, and their children, Katy and Lisa; three stepchildren, Michael (Susan) Simonson, Fargo, and their children, Sarah Ogren, Ellie and Rose Simonson, Rita Simonson, Fargo, and her daughter, Nikki, and Lori Schmidt, Green Bay, WI, and her children, Jessy, Danny, and Emmy; his mother, Norma Tellinghuisen, Tacoma, WA; a sister, Barbara Mueller, Tacoma; a brother, Jack (Barbara) Tellinghuisen, Marco Island, FL; and two great-stepgrandchildren, Brandon Ogren and Destiny Simonson. Visitation: Tuesday, 4 PM to 7 PM Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead, and one hour before the funeral, at the church. Prayer service: Tuesday at 7 PM Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead Funeral service: Wednesday, April 14, 2004, at 1 PM Community Baptist Church Fargo, North Dakota. Burial: Prairie Home cemetery, Moorhead, MN.

Donna Stinogel

Donna Jean Kalahar was born October 30, 1929, to Miles and Violet (Anderson) Kalahar, in Fort Dodge, IA, where she was raised and received her education. Donna worked at Brooks Laundry in Fort Dodge. On September 2, 1950, she married Elvin E. Stinogel at the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua, IA. They made their home in Fort Dodge and in 1971, they moved to Fergus Falls, MN. Donna worked as a bookkeeper at Ebersviller Implement in Fergus Falls. In 1988, they moved to Fargo, ND. Elvin died April 6, 2000. Donna died Monday, April 5, 2004, in her Fargo home, at the age of 74.

Donna loved crafts, gardening and flowers – especially irises. She also enjoyed being at the lake.

Donna is survived by a daughter, Patty (Neil) Power, Langdon, ND; three sons, Greg (Pat), Waterford, MI, Jeff, Fergus Falls, and Randy (Lois), Fergus Falls; and three grandchildren, Joshua, Sam and Beth.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, and a sister, Bonnie Lou.

Funeral Service: Thursday, April 8, 2004 - 10:30 AM, First Assembly of God, Fargo, ND

Interment: North Lawn cemetery, Fort Dodge, IA

Diane L. Schaffer

Diane Lynn Olson was born December 14, 1954, in Fargo, ND, to Wallace and Darlene (Svare) Olson. She was raised in Fargo and graduated from Fargo South High School in 1973. Diane was married to Glenn Schaffer, June 16, 1973, in Fargo, and they made their home in Colorado Springs, CO. While there, Diane worked in a healthcare recovery center.

They returned to Fargo in 1975 and she worked as a nurse’s aide at St. John’s Hospital, Fargo. Over the years, Diane worked for Mobility, and C and C Market, both Fargo, Larson’s Super Valu, West Fargo, ND, and later with her father at Duane’s Appliance, Fargo. She was presently employed with Anderson Trucking and Towing, Fargo, as a dispatcher.

Diane died Tuesday, May 18, 2004, surrounded by her family and friends in her home, under hospice care, at forty-nine years of age.

She is survived by her husband, Glenn, Fargo; two sons, Jeremy (friend, Pamela), Bismarck, ND, and Joshua (Cassandra), Fargo; two sisters, Wanda Landis, and Linda (Darrell) Lehse, both Fargo; four brothers, Larry (Jan), Thief River Falls, MN, Steve (Michelle), and Mike (Sara), both Fargo, and Mark, Warroad, MN; 21 nieces and nephews; and ten grand nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents; mother-in-law, Lorraine Schaffer; sister-in-law, Susan Schaffer; and a nephew, Kyle Schaffer.

Visitation: Thursday, May 20, 2004; 6 – 8 PM Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead

Funeral: Friday, May 21, 2004; 2 PM First Lutheran Church, Fargo

Burial: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fargo

Arthur L. Ruud

Arthur Leroy Ruud was born June 6, 1916, to Gustav and Ellen (Anderson) Ruud, in Christine, ND, where he was raised and graduated from high school in 1934. Arthur worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps for the Minnesota State Department of Forestry at Itasca State Park and then served three years in the Army Air Corps, during WW II, as an instrument flying instructor.

On December 2, 1950, Arthur married Ruby Moen in Sisseton, SD, and they made their home in Fargo, ND. Arthur worked as a senior appraiser and construction analyst for the Veterans Administration. After a total of thirty-one years of federal service, Arthur retired in 1972. Arthur and Ruby enjoyed traveling following his retirement. Arthur was a member of the Fargo American Legion, the 40 et 8, the Elks Lodge, Sons of Norway, and Peace Lutheran Church, Fargo, for many years.

Ruby preceded Arthur in death on December 12, 1997, and Arthur moved to the Waterford at Harwood Groves, Fargo, the following year. Arthur died Monday, April 19, 2004, at MeritCare South Campus, Fargo, at eighty-seven years of age. In addition to Ruby, Arthur was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

Arthur is survived by three nephews, Howard (Jan) Frisk, McLeod, ND, Larry Ruud, San Jose, CA, and Jimmy (Pam) Ruud, Stockton, CA; and seven nieces, JoAnn (Art) Solberg, Wyndmere, ND, Carolyn (Al) Wyum, Sunnyvale, CA, Linda (Bob) Liebelt, Moorhead, MN, Judy Cusey, Fargo, Jeanette (Rick) Schaeffer, Bismarck, ND, Becky (Brad) King, Fargo, and Debbie (Larry) Lenius, Moorhead.

Arthur’s funeral will be Friday, April 23, 2004, at 2 PM, in Peace Lutheran Church, Fargo. Visitation will be at the church one hour before the funeral. Burial with military honors will be at Riverside cemetery, Fargo.

Noretta K. Roche

Noretta K. Roche, 94, Fargo, ND, died Monday, May 17, 2004, in Innovis Health, Fargo.

Noretta Katherine Block was born February 6, 1910, near Nicollet, MN, to Louis and Margaret (Latour) Block. Noretta was raised on the family farm near Cleveland, MN, where she graduated from high school.

Noretta was married to Ernest Levi Roche, November 18, 1931, in Milwaukee, WI, and they lived and farmed near Ottawa, MN. They moved to Vancouver, WA, during WW II, where they worked in the shipyards. They moved to Mankato, MN, in 1946, where she worked for Mankato State College as a cashier.

Ernest died December 16, 1986. Noretta moved to Moorhead, MN, in 1992, and then to Fargo in 1998 to live with her son.

Noretta is survived by her son, Ron (Patty), Fargo; two grandsons, Shaun and Ben, both Fargo; and her best friend, Gretchen the dog.

Visitation: Friday, May 21, 2004; 4 – 7 PM; Mankato Mortuary

Funeral: Saturday, May 22, 2004; 10:30 AM; Mankato Mortuary

Henry J. Ricard

Henry J. Ricard, age 94, Fargo, ND, died Friday, Feb. 20, 2004, at Villa Maria in Fargo.

Henry Joseph Ricard, the son of Victor and Stephanie (Hasty) Ricard, was born April 12, 1909, near Beltrami, MN, where he grew up and received his education. On September 5, 1932, Henry was united in marriage to Ida M. Archambault, at Terrebonne, MN. Following their marriage, they made their home in the Beltrami area, where they farmed. They retired from farming in 1972. After they retired, they moved to Crookston, MN, to live. They also spent 13 winters in McAllen, Texas. In 1988, Henry and Ida moved to Riverview Place in Fargo, ND.

Henry’s wife, Ida, died on January 5, 2002. Later that year, Henry became a resident of Villa Maria in Fargo, where he had lived since. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, 4 sisters, and two daughters-in-law, Jodie Ricard of Washburn, WI, and Joanne Ricard of Glendora, CA.

Henry is survived by ten children, Diane (Leo) Wald, Moorhead, Kathleen (David) Wolter, Fortuna, ND, Marilyn (Michael) Sheehan, Rochester, MN, Phyllis (Edward) Varevice, Bloomington, MN, Robert (Margo) Ricard, Glendora, CA, Lawrence (Elaine) Ricard, Beltrami, MN, Ronald ( Marion) Ricard, Duluth, MN, Dennis (Marlys) Ricard, Crookston, MN, James (Colleen) Ricard, Bemidji, MN; David Ricard, Washburn, WI; 38 grandchildren; and 39 great-grandchildren.

Visitation: Monday, from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM St. Joseph Catholic Church, Moorhead.

Prayer service: Monday at 6 PM St. Joseph Catholic Church, Moorhead.

Funeral Mass: Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2004, at 2 PM St. Joseph Catholic Church, Moorhead, Minnesota.

Burial: St. Joseph’s Catholic cemetery, Moorhead.

Marie C. Rerick

Marie C. Rerick, 72, Moorhead, MN, died Easter Sunday, April 11, 2004, in her home under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Marie Clare Adkins was born February 3, 1932, to Clarence and Helen (Murray) Adkins, in Grand Forks, ND, where she was raised. She graduated from Grand Forks Central High School. Marie worked as a telephone operator for St. Michael’s Hospital for a time and then worked in the payroll department for Butler Construction, both in Grand Forks.

Marie was united in marriage to Raymond Rerick, August 18, 1951, in Grand Forks where they made their home until moving to Sioux Falls, SD, in 1973. They moved to Moorhead in 1975 where they have since lived. When her children were young, Marie was involved as treasurer of Cub Scout Pack 632 in Moorhead.

Marie is survived by her husband, Ray, Moorhead; five sons, Scott (Lynn), Ashley, ND, Greg (Dianne), Sioux Falls, Pat (Lisa), Mapleton, ND, and Matt (Misty) and Steve (Susie), both Moorhead; five daughters, Jan (Ron) Anderson, Cathy (Len) Dose and Julie (Mike) Kautz, all Sioux Falls, Jo Rerick, Alexandria, MN, and Terry (Keith) Free, Laurel Hill, FL; twenty-eight grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Rita Beyer, Fargo, ND. In addition to her parents, Marie was preceded in death by two brothers, one sister and one great-grandson.
