James E. Jolliffe
OCONOMOWOC, Wis. - James E. Jolliffe, formerly of North Platte, died June 13, 2001, at Oconomowoc Memorial Hospital. He was 56.

He was born Sept. 16, 1944, to William and Elizabeth Ray Jolliffe in North Platte. He graduated from St. Patrick High School in North Platte. He served in the U.S. Navy during Vietnam.

He was a member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Oconomowoc.

Mr. Jolliffe was an electronics sales representative for Circuit Sales Inc.

Surviving him is his wife Marilyn Morgan Jolliffe; a daughter, Elizabeth J. (Scott) Jones of Mullen; a son James E. Jr. (Shelly) of Oconomowoc; two sisters, Dorothy Murphy and Meribeth (Tom) Kelsey, both of North Platte; and two grandchildren, Stephen Jolliffe and Haley Jones.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Howard, Ronald and Chuck.

Memorials are suggested to St. Patrick's Catholic School Endowment Fund.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in North Platte.

Schmidt & Bartelt Notbohm-Kreutzmann Funeral Home in Oconomowoc is in charge.

Maxine Leach
OGALLALA - Maxine Leach, 75, of Ogallala died June 16, 2001, at the Ogallala Community Hospital.

She was born July 11, 1925, to Herbert and Blanche Wheaton Thurston in Ashby. She graduated from Alliance High School in 1943.

She worked at the Army Air Base in Alliance and also at Cornhusker Depot.

In 1946, she married Art Dille. He preceded her in death in 1965. In 1967, she married Jack Labart and he died in 1986.

In 1989, she married Edward Leach at Burwell, where she worked for Fort Hartsuff Historical Park. They ranched south of Gordon and then moved to a ranch west of Taylor, where they retired in 1995. In 1996, they moved to Ogallala.

Mrs. Leach is survived by her husband, Edward; five daughters, Cindy (Wayne) Buresh of Batesland, S.D., Judy (Marv) Winters of Payson, Ariz., Vanita (Bill) Barnes of Flower Mound, Texas, Sheila (Steve) Talbot of Springfield, Mo., and Pam (Chad) Conklin of Melbeta; a son, Barry (Connie) Leach of Hyannis; a brother, John Thurston of Mullen; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.

Memorials may be given to the Hyannis Cemetery.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Draucker Funeral Home in Ogallala with the Rev. Mary Lou Reynolds officiating.

Inurnment will be at 3:30 p.m. in the Hyannis Cemetery.

Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Wednesday until time of services at Draucker Funeral Home of Ogallala.

Fern E. McConnell
Fern E. McConnell, 104, of North Platte died June 17, 2001, at Sutherland Community Care Center.

She was born Aug. 23, 1896, to William and Lena Mae Titterington Cox at Emerson, Iowa. At the age of 2, she moved with her parents by covered wagon to Nebraska. She attended school through the ninth grade and completed a course in music from Weslyan College in Lincoln.

On Sept. 4, 1918, she married Lester McConnell at Ogallala. They made their home on a farm at Sarben until 1961, when they moved to North Platte. Her husband preceded her in death on March 17, 1963.

Survivors include four sons, Cecil (Marjorie) of North Platte, Vince (Dorothy) and Gene (Helen) both of Pueblo, Colo., and Merle (Delores) of Paxton; a sister, Hazel Bell of Grand Junction, Colo.; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; three sisters, Ruth Harrison, Vera Cox and Emma Nelson; and three brothers, Glenn, Tom and Forrest Cox.

A memorial has been established.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the North Platte Cemetery with the Rev. Hawley of First Presbyterian Church officiating.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday before services at Carpenter Memorial Chapel in North Platte.

Garlyn 'Bud' Naylor
COZAD - Garlyn "Bud" Naylor, 67, of Cozad died June 17, 2001, at Cozad.

He was born Nov. 16, 1933, near Callaway to Harry and Fannie Marley Naylor. He attended school in Callaway before moving to Cozad in 1950.

On Dec. 7, 1952, he married Verla "Kay" Hemphill at Callaway.

He was employed by Cozad area farmers, Paulsen Building & Supply and Allied Mills before being employed at F&S Sausage for 30 years. He later was a custodian at the Cozad High School for 13 years until his retirement in 1998.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and a former member of the Cozad JayCees. He served on the Cozad Volunteer Fire Department for 25 years. He was a past master of the Cozad Masonic Lodge and a member of the Cozad Elks Lodge.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Tami (Rick) Lemmon of Cozad; two sons, Steve (Barb) of Lexington and Stan (Jennie) of Phoenix; two brothers, Don (Evelyn) of Cozad and Duane (Peg) of Loveland, Colo.; four grandchildren, Sandy, Carrie, Bryan and Kevin; a great-grandson, Cole; two step-grandchildren, Frances and Benny; and four step-great-grandchildren, Stone, Jerievie, Savannah and Cecelia.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Carol Jean Naylor; and a great-grandson, Thorne Phillips.

Memorials are suggested to Central Plains Home Health and Hospice.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in Cozad with the Rev. Debra Tompsett-Welch officiating. Burial will be in the Cozad Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the Berryman Funeral Home in Cozad.

John Thomas 'Tom' Simon
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - John Thomas "Tom" Simon, 88, of College Park, Md., formerly of North Platte, died June 3, 2001, at his home.

He was born April 16, 1913, to Lee F. and Catherine Neville Simon. He was retired from the District of Columbia National Guard, where he was assistant adjutant general from 1952 until his retirement in 1973.

Mr. Simon received his law degree from Creighton University in Omaha. After serving in the Nebraska National Guard, he was an officer in the U.S. Army during World War II. During his wartime service, he was commander of the Flint Stone Prisoner of War Camp near Flintstone, Md. He moved with his wife Francis and children to Washington in 1952 and to College Park in 1956, where he was a member of the Holy Redeemer Church. He became an active bicyclist in his retirement.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years; two sons, Thomas T. of Greenbelt, Md., and Gregory F. of Washington; three granddaughters, Erica Simon-Brown, Julia M. Kender and Nora F.D. Simon; two sisters, Rosalea (Ray) Simon Jenkins of North Platte and Annalea (Glenn) Simon Clark of Tucson, Ariz.; and a sister-in-law, Marilyn (Billy) Simon Mulligan of Hershey.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Francis; and three brothers, Paul, Urban and Joseph.

Memorials are suggested to St. Patrick's Catholic Church in North Platte.

Services will be at 11 p.m. today in Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell. A gathering of family and friends will follow.

Beulah J. Starmer
CLARKS - Beulah J. Starmer of Clarks, formerly of North Platte, died June 17, 2001, at Litzenberg Long Term Care in Central City. She was 87.

She was born April 28, 1914, to Chauncey and Jessie Moore Hare in Schuyler. She was baptized in the Methodist faith.

On March 25, 1935, she married Floyd W. Starmer in Schuyler.

They lived in the Schuyler and North Bend areas before moving to Washington and then North Platte. In 1950, they moved to Fremont where they lived for 15 years.

Mrs. Starmer was a cook. In 1964, they moved to Grand Island, where she worked at Hested's and Woolworth's.

In 1970, they moved to North Platte, where they lived until 1996. In June 1996, she moved to Clarks.

She is survived by a daughter, Sandra (Maurice) Lindgreen of Clarks; three grandchildren; a great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Sept. 9, 1997; a son, Donald; and two sisters, Wylma Cantral and Thelma Harris.

Memorials are suggested to the Clarks Methodist Church or Long Term Care Activities.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Wagner Funeral Home in Central City with the Rev. Richard Fairbanks officiating. Burial will be in the Central City Cemetery.

Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Naomi Fox
BROKEN BOW - Naomi Fox, 86, of Broken Bow died June 18, 2001, at the St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

She was born Jan. 16, 1915, at Ansley to George E. and Cecil Flora Spencer Munn. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1931.

On Nov. 14, 1931, she married Robert W. Fox at Taylor. They lived in Berwyn. In 1949, she moved to Broken Bow. She worked as a waitress and dietary aide at the Arrow Hotel and later at the Sandhills Manor nursing home. She retired in 1983.

Mrs. Fox was a member of the First Baptist Church in Broken Bow and Rebekahs in Berwyn. She was active in church and was a member of a Bible study class. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles and yard work.

Survivors include a daughter, Sandra (Dennis) Dippong of La Porte, Texas; two sons, Steven of Pasadena, Texas, and Dennis (Elaine) of Arnold; four sisters, Rowena Trew of Lincoln, Georgena Miller of Hastings, Bonnie Wilson of Litchfield, and Donna Henion of Galesburg, Mich.; a brother, George Munn; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, John and Robert G.; two grandchildren; her parents; a sister; and three brothers.

Memorials are suggested to the First Baptist Church in Broken Bow.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow with the Rev. Dr. Charles Gregory officiating. Burial will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Sarah Lydic Hamm
NORFOLK, Va. - Sarah "Alverda" Hamm, sister of Wray Lydic of Gothenburg and a former resident of the Farnam area, died June 1, 2001, in a Norfolk, Va., hospital. She was 90.

She was born Feb. 28, 1911, to Robert and Lula Aylsworth Lydic.

She was a retired school teacher and a member of Calvary Presbyterian Church in Norfolk.

Mrs. Hamm is survived by her husband of 60 years, Will I. Hamm; a daughter, Kay Sarah Herrold of Garysburg, N.C.; a son, David L. Hamm of Boones Mill, Va.; a brother, Wray (Theresa) Lydic of Gothenburg; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services were June 11, 2001, in Virginia with burial in North Carolina.

The Cremation Society of Virginia was in charge.
