Elwood Roger West
MASON CITY - Elwood Roger West, 59, died June 24, 2001, at his home near Mason City.
He was born Oct. 29, 1941, at Loup City to Ted and Vina Bray West. He graduated from Ansley High School in 1960. After graduation, he began working at Becton-Dickinson, where he worked until retiring in November 2000, after 40 years of service.
On Sept. 3, 1967, he married Carol Ann Witmer at Overton. The couple lived a short time in Berwyn before moving back to the family farm in 1973.
Mr. West enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time on the family farm. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and playing with his grandchildren. He was a member of the Ansley United Methodist Church.
Surviving him is his wife; a daughter, Kimberly (Brian) Eberle of Kearney; a son, Scott (Dawn) of Merna; two sisters, Fauvett (Cecil) Cushman of Burwell and Myrene Woodward of Overton; and two grandsons, Lane Scott West and Colten Roy Eberle.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother.
Memorials are suggested to the Custer County Hospital and the Ansley United Methodist Church.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Ansley with the Rev. Sherry Sklenar officiating. Burial will be in the Ansley Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow and from 5 to 8 p.m. today in the Ansley United Methodist Church.
Lucille Brott
PAXTON - Lucille Irene Brott, formerly of Paxton, died June 25, 2001, at Premier Estates in North Platte. She was 87.
She was born Nov. 18, 1913, at Paxton, the daughter of Frederick S. and Stella M. Herron Jennings. In 1934, she married Charles Jenkins.
On Sept. 25, 1942, she married Arvene Brott at Stapleton. They had two sons, Eugene and Patrick. They lived in the Sutherland, Paxton and Sarben areas, where he was employed on various ranches. He preceded her in death in 1974.
Mrs. Brott attended the United Methodist Church in Paxton. She was a member of a senior citizens' group in the area and enjoyed playing the piano, embroidering and tending her flowers and garden.
Survivors include her grandchildren, her great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Paxton United Methodist Church with the Revs. Mark Carlton and Ron Jay officiating. Burial will be in the Paxton Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday and prior to the services Friday at the church.
Gubser Funeral Home of Ogallala is in charge.
Kenneth Kerwin Conrey
NORCROSS, Ga. - Kenneth Conrey, 76, formerly of North Platte, died March 7, 2001, at his son's home in Norcross, Ga.
He was born Aug 25, 1924, to John Wesley and Mabel Kerwin Conrey in Cheyenne, Wyo., and grew up in North Platte. In high school he developed his lifelong love of music, playing the string bass. He graduated from North Platte High School in 1942 and joined the U.S. Army Air Corps, now the Air Force, where he was a waist gunner on B-17 bombers based in Fogia, Italy. When he wasn't flying missions over Germany, he played for dances with a group of British soldiers.
After World War II, he earned a degree from the University of Denver and worked in city government or finance-related positions for the next 50 years with jobs in North Platte, Texas, Florida, and finally Albuquerque, N.M. He continued his passion for music, playing semi-professionally for various local bands.
Mr. Conrey is survived by a daughter, Megganey Sue Elmore of Garland, Texas; two sons, James Todd of Sellersburg, Ind., and Calvin Frank of Norcross; their mother, Donna Sapp Conrey of North Platte; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Christine Kae; his parents; and two brothers, Robert Lawrence and James Richard "Rick".
Burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday in Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell.
Lola Scott Hutchison
TRIBUNE, Kan.- Lola Scott Hutchison, 88, mother of Preston Scott Hutchison of Hershey, died June 25, 2001, at the High Plains Retirement Village in Lakin, Kan.
She was born Nov. 4, 1912, at Bucklin, Kan., to George Print and Lydia Lillian Gee Preston. She attended school at Enterprise and Bucklin, Kan.
On March 1, 1941, she married Harry E. Hutchison at Greensburg, Kan. He preceded her in death Aug. 29, 1974, at Kansas City, Kan.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Whitelaw EHU, the Busy Bee Sewing Club, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Eastern Star and Rebecca Lodges and the Grandma's Pitch Club.
Mrs. Hutchison is survived by two daughters, Beth Ann (Jack) Hulsey of Lakin, Kan., and Kay (Lynn) Marcy of Oakley, Kan.; two sons, Preston Scott (Sue) of Hershey and Harry Lynn (Sharron) of Grand Island; a sister, Blanche Hood of Montezuma, Kan.; two brothers, George and Claude Preston, both of Dodge City, Kan.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by six sisters; and a brother.
Memorials are suggested to the High Plains Retirement Village in Lakin in care of the Price & Sons Funeral Home, PO BOX 161 Leoti, KS 67861.
Services will be at 10 a.m. MDT Thursday at the First Baptist Church in Tribune with Carley Hazelton officiating. Burial will follow at 4 p.m. CDT Thursday in the Bucklin (Kansas) Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. MDT today at the Price & Sons Funeral Home in Tribune, Kan.
Thellie Corrine Lee
Thellie Corrine Lee, 84, of North Platte died June 24, 2001, at Centennial Park Retirement Village in North Platte.
She was born Oct. 21, 1916, in Douglas County, Ga., to Crayton "Pete" and Mary Catherine Beddington Queen. She grew up and attended school in that area.
On May 21, 1934, she married James Clayburn Gibson in Douglas County, where they made their home. He preceded her in death in 1937. She worked at the Coats and Clark Thread Mill.
On June 21, 1944, she married Henry Whitfield Lee in Douglas County. They moved to North Platte in May 1978. Her husband preceded her in death in 1982.
Mrs. Lee is survived by a daughter, Jean (Ralph) Vogel of North Platte; a daughter-in-law, Marie Gibson of California; a sister, Elma Whitmire of Woodstock, Ga.; nine grandchildren, Richard, Mark and Mike (Jeanine) Gibson and Annette (Scott) Seki, all of California, David (Sally) Vogel of Craig, Cathy (Mike) Vogel-Trotter of North Platte, Jeff (Stacy) Vogel of St. Paul, Kayleen (Shandy) Vogel-Heller of Lincoln and Joe (Maisha) Vogel of Aurora, Colo.; 13 great-grandchildren; and other relatives.
She was also preceded in death by a son, James Gibson; two sisters, Leah Grantham and an infant sister; three brothers, Ken, Herbert and Horace Queen; and a great-grandson.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Odean Colonial Chapel with the Rev. Dan Reimer of the Bethel Evangelical Free Church officiating. Burial will be in the North Platte Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Odean Colonial Chapel.
Linda Elliott
ARLINGTON, Texas - Linda Elliott, 37, of Arlington, Texas, formerly of North Platte, died June 25 2001, at Arlington.
She was born June 13, 1964, in North Platte to Merril and Gisele Dedours McClellen. She graduated from Lexington High School in 1982. She was employed for the National Health Insurance Agents in the accounting department.
Survivors include her husband, Steve; her mother; her stepfather; Raymond McDowell of Clifton, Texas; three brothers, David (Jacki) McClellen of Seattle, James McClellen of Reno, Nev., and Mark McClellen of Omaha; and a niece, Ashley McClellen of Seattle.
She was preceded in death by her father.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington with the Rev. Cathy Cole officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Reynolds-Love Chapel.
Gladys A. Leider
LAKEWOOD, Calif. - Gladys Leider 92, former North Platte resident, died June 24, 2001, in Lakewood, Calif.
She was born Sept. 3, 1908, in Kansas City, Mo., to Charles and Minnie Keen.
On Feb. 11, 1927, she married George J. Leider. They lived in North Platte from 1928 until 1951 when they moved to California.
He preceded her in death Dec. 28, 1977, in Lakewood.
Mrs. Leider is survived by two daughters, Helen (Bill) Jones of Las Vegas and Jo (Marvin) Maxwell of Lakewood; two sons, George K. (Barbara Bomberger) and Bob (Tracy), both of Carson City, Nev.; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by four sisters; and a grandson, Jerry Maxwell in 1999.
Burial will be Saturday in the Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, Calif.
Robert Lyle Simpson
Robert Lyle Simpson, 73, of North Platte died June 27, 2001, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center.
He was born Nov. 12, 1927, at Carmen to Alva Newton and Pearl Belle Robinson Simpson. He grew up in Arthur County and attended country schools. He worked on a ranch until he joined the U.S. Army in 1946. He returned to ranching after being discharged in 1947.
On Oct. 3, 1948, he married Irene Maude Boyer at Sutherland.
They lived on the ranch until 1978, when they sold it. They lived in Hershey for two years before moving to North Platte in 1980.
He participated in a non-denominational fellowship.
Mr. Simpson is survived by his wife; three sons, Harold Eugene (Nora Mary) of Denver, Billy Dean (Michelle) of Arthur and James Robert of North Platte; four sisters, Vera Mae Griffith of San Diego, Opal Eileen Bridwell of Cheyenne, Wyo., Lila Belle Piihl of Alliance and Verna Lois Cinnamon of Frankfort, Ky.; a brother, Oran "Dean" (Norma Jean) Simpson of Keystone; seven grandchildren, Monica, Jeremy (Elizabeth), Wade (Shanna), Wyatt and Matthew Simpson, Angela (Charlie) Robb and Shannon (George) Allard; three great-grandchildren, Kali, Derek and Tallyn; his father-in-law, George Boyer of North Platte; and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his mother-in-law, Irene Boyer.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell with military honors provided by the North Platte Veterans' Honor Guard.
The body was cremated. Those wishing to sign the register book may do so from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. today at Odean Colonial Chapel and before the services Friday at the cemetery.
Laura Bell Wells
Laura Bell Wells died June 26, 2001, at the Sutherland Care Center. She was 89.
She was born June 20, 1912, at Philadelphia to William and Gertrude Mabel Millet White.
She married Gilbert C. Hamilton. They moved to North Platte in 1959. He preceded her in death Feb. 20, 1960.
In 1963, she married Virgil L. Wells. He preceded her in death Dec. 6, 1993. She worked at Grant's in Philadelphia and later at O'Conner Dime Store in North Platte.
Mrs. Wells is survived by a daughter, Dolores V. (Jack) Wright of North Platte; a son, Gilbert C. (Donna) Hamilton of Padre Island, Texas; a sister, Marian Tuohy of Media, Penn.; three grandson, Jack Stanley, Steve E. (Donna) and Randy Lee (Cynthia) Wright; and four great-grandchildren, Lisa Ann, Jason and Nicholas Wright and Lori Virginia (Bruce Ryan) Estep.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; four sister, Mabel McElhiney, Sybilla Pool, Edna Stillwell and Eleanor Vincent; and a brother, William White.
Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.
There will be private family graveside services. There will be no visitation.
