Jack Sawyer
ROSCOE — Jack Sawyer, 73, of Roscoe, July 27, 2001, at his home.

Mr. Sawyer was born Feb. 5, 1928, to George and Jessie Trullinger Sawyer on a farm three and one-half miles south of Paxton. He received his early education at School District No. 8 in Keith County. He completed his GED in Denver in 1958.

Mr. Sawyer went to work for Haggard Drilling in 1944 and in 1949 he started work with Ellithorp and Putman Drilling Co. In 1950 he began the Statewide Drilling Co. During this time he was also employed as a fireman for Union Pacific Railroad for many years. As a fireman he learned about steam power and how to fire and operate steam trains.

He sold his business in 1958. His next venture was Jack's Auto Repair in Roscoe.

In 1962 he registered his trade name, Sawyer Steel Products Co. He started building cattle-guard gates, and then other ranch equipment. He employed five men in his operation.

In 1973 he closed his business due to the Arab oil embargo, since his raw materials were oil well pipe and rods. He then went to work for Glen Anderson Sand and Gravel in Paxton. In 1977 he went to work for Gerald Gentleman Station near Sutherland. He was a heavy equipment operator for the Keith County Roads Department from 1981 to his retirement in 1995.

In 1973 Mr. Sawyer married Arlene Huffman, and soon adopted three of her children.

Survivors include a daughter, Judy (Ronald) Hawkins of North Platte; two sons, Chuck Sawyer of North Platte and Steve (Donna) Sawyer of McCook; stepdaughters Marcia (Raymond) Walrod of Imperial and Shirley (Russell) Isaac of Fayetteville, N.C.; two sisters, Irene Shafer of Roscoe and Genevieve Heins of Sutherland; and 10 grandchildren.

A memorial has been established to the American Cancer Society.

Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Luke's Catholic Church with the Rev. John Schlaf officiating. Graveside rites are at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Paxton Cemetery.

Visitation will be on Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Draucker Funeral Home in Ogallala. The wake service will be at 8 p.m. with the Rev. John Schlaf officiating.

Clarence Mac Duryea
BROKEN BOW - Clarence Mac Duryea of Broken Bow died July 28, 2001, at the Jennie Melham Memorial Hospital in Broken Bow. He was 80.

He was born in Omaha May 7, 1921, to Clarence Sr. and Myrtle McClement Duryea. He grew up and went to school in Dunning and graduated from Dunning High School.

In October 1942, he went to the Army Air Force and participated in the Battle of the Bulge in Germany, receiving two Bronze Battle Stars. He worked at various jobs in Dunning.

In 1957, he married Hazel Jean Saner and they moved to Denver.

Mr. Duryea worked for the Montgomery Ward Company for 26 years, retiring in 1985. He returned to Dunning.

He is survived by two brothers, Rex (Mary) Duryea and Donald (Lois) Whiteman, both of Broken Bow; two stepsisters, Bonnie Doggett and Twilla Will; a host of brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; and nieces and nephews.

He was proceeded in death by his wife July 1995; his mother, Myrtle Duryea Whiteman, and his father.

Memorials may made to the Salvation Army

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow with the Rev. Tim Pearson officiating. Burial with military rites will be in the Brewster Cemetery.

Walter G. Hecox
GOTHENBURG - Walter G. Hecox, 89, of Gothenburg, died July 28, 2001, at Gothenburg Memorial Hospital.

He was born April 16, 1912, in Gothenburg to Albert Charles and Helen G. Curtis Hecox. He graduated from Gothenburg High School in 1930 and attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for one year. He farmed south of Gothenburg his entire life, retiring in 1974.

On April 14, 1940, he married Alice K. Aden in Gothenburg.

Mr. Hecox restored World War II airplanes with the Confederate Air Force. He also enjoyed restoring old cars, and other projects were his passion. He enjoyed flying for many years, was a member of the Masonic Lodge-Gothenburg, the Confederate Air Force, he was a Pony Express Ride participant and a 75-year member of the Banner Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife of Gothenburg; a daughter, Elizabeth (Elliot) Johnson of Laramie, Wyo.; a son, James (Marsha) of Gothenburg; a sister, Mildred Anderson of Littleton, Colo.; four grandchildren, Rebecca (Erich) Hohl of Lincoln, Eric Johnson of Littleton, John Hecox of Gothenburg and Karna (Cary) Hamilton of Memphis, Tenn.; and a great-granddaughter, Dorian Hamilton.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert.

Memorials are suggested to the Gothenburg Senior Center, Banner Methodist Church or to the donor's choice.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Banner United Methodist Church in Gothenburg with the Rev. Bill Bicket officiating. Burial will be in the Peckham Cemetery.

Blase Memorial Chapel in Gothenburg is in charge.

Melvin F. Hicken
GOTHENBURG - Melvin F. Hicken of Grand Island, a native of Gothenburg, died July 29, 2001, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lincoln. He was 72.

He was born Jan. 16, 1929, to William J. and Violet Aden Hicken at Gothenburg, where he was raised and educated.

On Oct. 17, 1954, he married Mary L. Fecht at the American

Lutheran Church in Gothenburg. The couple made their home in Gothenburg for two years and in 1956 moved to Grand Island. He was a line foreman at the Grand Island Utilities Department for 20 years.

Mr. Hicken was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Gothenburg and St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Grand Island. He enjoyed woodworking, restoring antiques and enjoyed fixing anything electrical.

Surviving him is his wife; a daughter, Violet L. Crouch of Marquette; a son, William (Kimberly) of Grand Island; seven grandchildren, Shelton R., Travis L., Chelsea L. and Tiffany M. Crouch and Sandra L., Joseph F. and Joshua J. Hicken; four great-grandchildren, Bailey R., Casandra L. and Jaiden T. Crouch and Briana B. Johnson; three sisters, Juleen Farnstrom of Hebron, Karen Smith of Gothenburg and Kristi Henn of Lincoln; and a brother, Garry Hicken of Gothenburg.

He was preceded in death by his parents and stepmother, Ermma Hicken.

Memorials may be made to the family.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Zion Lutheran Church in Gothenburg, with the Rev. Steve Berke officiating. Burial will be in the American Lutheran Cemetery at Gothenburg.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home in Grand Island, with the family receiving friends from 6 to 7 p.m.

Ernest E. Keller
OMAHA - Ernest E. Keller, formerly of North Platte, died July 27, 2001, at Bergan Mercy Medical Center in Omaha. He was 77.

He was born in Preston, Kan., Feb. 25, 1924, to Edgar E. and Verma Beach Keller. He grew up on a farm at Iola, Kan., and graduated from Antrim High School.

On March 2, 1943, he married Joyce Redfern.

Mr. Keller entered the Army in May 1943 and served with the 16th Armored Division and 16th Tank Battalion in the European Theater in World War II. He was with the first division to enter Czechoslovakia and remained with the Army of Occupation on the Russian border. He was discharged in May 1946.

He was a partner in Mullen Furniture in Pratt, Kan., until July 1956, when he moved to Denver. He also worked for Speed Queen Corporation and moved to North Platte in June 1956. In 1978, he moved to Omaha, where he worked for United Distributing of Omaha, until his retirement in February 1986.

Surviving him is his wife; two daughters, Jennifer Keller (Gary Garnjobst) of Burlington, Wis., and Lisa (Don) Wilcox of McCook; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three sisters; and three brothers.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.

Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Larrison Mortuary in Pratt, with the Rev. Tom Griffith of the Free Methodist Church in McPherson, Kan., officiating. Burial will be in Iuka (Kan.) Cemetery with full military honors.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the mortuary.

Seth Gordon Macy
BRULE - Seth Gordon Macy, 87, of Brule died July 27, 2001, at Indian Hills Manor in Ogallala.

He was born July 24, 1914, in Hebron to Albert and Agnes Murray Macy. He graduated from Carleton High School in 1933. He then worked on several farms in the county.

In the late 1930s, he moved to Keith County to farm with his brother, Frank. In 1941, he entered the Army and served in the European Theatre. After his discharge in 1945, he returned to Keith County and farming.

In 1951, he married Alta Anderson in Brady. The couple made their home in Keith County and farmed in both Keith and Perkins counties.

The Macys retired in 1983 and moved to Brule.

Mr. Macy moved to Indian Hills Manor in Ogallala in 1998 due to ill health. His wife died in December 1998.

Surviving him is a daughter, Karen Macy of Lincoln; a son, Neil of Brule; a sister, Ethel Clouse of Grant; and three sisters-in-law, Doris Macy of Ogallala, Doris Ough of Wauneta and Eunice Grier of Peoria, Ill.

Also preceding him in death were two sisters, Edith Butler and Lorna Muehling, and a brother, Frank.

A memorial has been established to the Brule Ambulance Squad.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today at the United Church of Christ Congregational in Brule with the Rev. Phil Ewert officiating. Burial will be in the Brule Cemetery.

Mary C. Mullikin
Mary C. Mullikin, 76, of North Platte died July 28, 2001, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center.

She was born June 17, 1925, at Hutchinson, Kan., to Richard A. and Emma Lou Walters Dadisman. She graduated from Hutchinson High School and attended Colorado Women's College before earning her bachelor's degree in speech pathology from Wichita (Kan.) State College. She was employed at the Institute of Logopedics in Wichita for a number of years.

On September 1, 1947, she married Walter R. Mullikin in Kansas. The couple moved to North Platte in 1954.

Mrs. Mullikin was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church. She was instrumental in the opening of the North Platte Opportunity Center and was also a volunteer with the Senior Center's home-delivered meals.

Survivors include two daughters, Cathy (Bill) Hogan of St. Louis and Deb (Doug) Wurl of North Platte; a son, Chuck (Kristi) of Omaha; a brother, Richard A. (Marian) Dadisman of San Jose, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Anna (Ryan) McDowell, Peter Mullikin, Tere Hogan, and Brock, Jackie and Derek Wurl.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and a brother, Jack.

A memorial has been established.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Messiah Lutheran Church in North Platte with the Rev. Eric Meissner officiating. Burial will be in Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell.

Carpenter Memorial Chapel is in charge.
