Susan Lynn Bottrell
MINATARE — Susan Lynn Bottrell, 49, of Minatare, died Wednesday, May 5, 1999, at her home. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, May 10 at the Jolliffe Funeral Home in Scottsbluff, with the Rev. Scott McPeak officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery at Scottsbluff. Memorials may be made in care of the family. Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday, May 9. The casket will be closed at the funeral.

She was born March 24, 1950, at Grand Island, Neb., the daughter of Harold Lee and Opal (Brown) Knott. She moved with her family to Scottsbluff at the age of 8 and graduated from the Scottsbluff Senior High School in 1968. She was united in marriage to Ronald Bottrell, Oct. 4, 1974, at Cheyenne, Wyo. She worked for the Star-Herald from 1984 to 1985 in the Circulation Dept. The past 13 years she has worked in Patient Accounts at Regional West Medical Center at Scottsbluff and had also worked at Target in Scottsbluff since 1992.

She was a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary, a current member of the Minatare City Council and a former Camp Fire leader.

She is survived by her husband Ronald; daughters and sons-in-law Kimberly and Heath Donley, Kristina and Tom Johnson all of Minatare; grandchildren Jordan, Tyler and Rileigh Donley, Taylor and Brendon Johnson; mother Opal Han of Minatare; brother and sister-in-law Dick and Christine Knott of Minatare.

She was preceded in death by her father Harold Lee Knott, step-father Carl Han, and paternal and maternal grandparents.

Joan Morgan
LEAVENWORTH, Kan. — Joan R. Morgan, 60, of Leavenworth, Kan., died Saturday, May 1, 1999, at St. John Hospital. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 6 at the St. John Lutheran Church in Farley, Mo., with the Rev. Douglas Good officiating. Burial was at Leavenworth National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to the Sugar Diabetes Foundation. Davis Funeral Chapel was in charge of the arrangements.

She was born Dec. 29, 1938, at Bayard, the daughter of Henry and Lydia Hartwig Leikam. She married Marion M. Morgan on Feb. 21, 1970, in Virginia City, Nev. She was retired from Civil Service. She had worked for the CGSC Library at Fort Leavenworth.

She was a member of the Hallmark Collector’s Club. She was a Lutheran.

She is survived by her husband, daughter Kimberely A. Mailey of Lansing; son Dennis W. Morgan of Clarksville, Tenn.; four brothers Edward Leikam and Riney Leikam, both of Riverton, Wyo., Richard Leikam of Tucson, Ariz., and Ted Leikam of Seaside, Calif.; three sisters Mary Ann Lynch of Gering, June Pedranti of Monterey, Calif., and Margaret Kemper of Bothell, Wash.; and five grandchildren.

Bernice Rystrom
SCOTTSBLUFF — A Funeral for Bernice Rystrom, 91, of Scottsbluff, who died Friday, May 7, 1999, at Regional West Medical Center at Scottsbluff, is pending at the Jolliffe Funeral Home at Scottsbluff.

Hilda M. (Herrmann) Swindle
TUCSON, Ariz. — Hilda M. (Herrmann) Swindle, of Tucson, Ariz., who grew up near Bayard, died May 5, 1999. Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 11 in Bayard. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 10 at Christensen-Bayard Memorial Chapel. Memorial contributions can be made to the Salvation Army or the Alzheimer’s Association. Bring’s Broadway Chapel in Tucson, Ariz. are in charge of the arrangements. Christensen-Bayard Memorial Chapel in Bayard is in charge of the local arrangements.

She was born May 19, 1919 in Scottsbluff, the daughter of George J. and Marie (Gruenwald) Herrmann. She earned a B.A. degree from Hastings College in 1940, graduating with honors. She then taught math and science in Bayard, Berwyn, and Indianola, Neb. She married the Rev. Cecil L. Swindle in 1943, and was a homemaker the rest of her life.

She is survived by her husband; three sons John and wife Sandra of Honolulu, James and wife Gail of Houston, and Timothy and wife Kerry of Tucson; two sisters Olinda Kingma of Scottsbluff and Regina Seligh of Wichita, Kan.; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister Clara Muehlberger.

Ricky B. Erpelding
SCOTTSBLUFF –– Ricky B. Erpelding, 37, a resident of Scottsbluff and formerly of Kearney, died Monday afternoon, Oct. 4, as a result of injuries received in a car/pickup accident near Scottsbluff. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 12 at the Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary with Rev. Michael Cary officiating. Burial will be in the Kearney Cemetery with military rites at the grave by V.F.W. Post #759 and the Kearney National Guard Unit. There will be no visitation. Memorials are planned to the family. Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.

Ricky was born June 8, 1962 in Kearney to Bernard and Josephine (Johnson) Erpelding and was a resident of Kearney until moving to Scottsbluff eight years ago. He graduated from Kearney high School in 1980 and was employed as a carpenter and a self-employed businessman. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He entered the service on Nov. 4, 1980 and was discharged on Oct. 30, 1984. He re-enlisted and served in the Desert Storm conflict and was discharged June 6, 1991.

Surviving relatives include his mother, Josephine Swanson of Kearney; his brother, David of Scottsbluff; his sisters, Theresa Erpelding, Marcia Whiteley, Tracy Salcido and Pamalin Venegas, all of Kearney.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Joy Elizabeth Sandberg
DENVER — Joy Elizabeth Sandberg, 48, of Denver died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999 at Mariner Health Care Center in Littleton, Colo. Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9 at the Calvary Baptist Church in Denver and on Sunday, Oct. 10 at 2 p.m. at the Central Church of Christ in Gering with the Rev. Victor McPeak officiating. Memorials may be made to the Joy E. Sandberg Memorial Fund in care of the Calvary Baptist Church, 6500 E. Girard St., Denver, Colo. 80224.

She was born in Scottsbluff Aug. 11, 1951 to Larry and Joyce (Rickard) Sandberg. After she finished first grade in the Banner County schools, the family moved to Gering where she graduated from high school in 1969. She received a bachelor’s degree in 1973 with majors in English and political science from Nebraska Wesleyan in Lincoln. She taught one year at Bryan Senior High School in Omaha. She continued her education at Simmons College in Boston, earning a master’s degree in library science. She also studied for a time at the University of Graz in Vienna, Austria, in the summer of 1972. She also traveled the world extensively, including trips to England, Russia, China, Italy and Korea.

In 1975, she joined Mountain States Employers Council, a human resource membership organization, as a librarian and became director of research in 1985. She was responsible for wage and benefit surveys conducted by the council.

She was a member and a past president of the Denver Mile High Rotary Club, a long-time member of the Toastmasters and the Leadership Denver organization.

On Sept. 22, 1966, she was baptized at the Central Church of Christ by the Rev. Howard Roseberry.

Joy married Gary Diffendaffer in Denver June 22, 1991. To this union, one daughter Jillian Joy was born.

Among her honors and activities are recipient of Title II-B Fellowship for study in library science, Alpha Gamma Delta sorority president, secretary general of Model United Nations, Kappa Delta Pi (the national education society), Pi Gamma Mu (national social science society), Cardinal Key (senior women’s honor society), associate editor of the Plainsman yearbook, Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities and Phi Theta Kappa (junior college scholastic honor society).

She is survived by her husband, Gary Diffendaffer and daughter, Jillian Joy Diffendaffer of Denver; parents, Larry and Joyce Sandberg of Gering; sister Janis and husband Perry Lofing of Gering; brothers Kevin and wife Karla Sandberg and Kelly and wife Crystal Sandberg of Gering; mother- and father-in-law, Eldon and Opal Diffendaffer of Scottsbluff; sisters- and brothers-in-law, Ron and Carol Diffendaffer, Steve and Karen Hascal, Jan and Michael Blue, all of Scottsbluff; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends.

Roy Seery
HAY SPRINGS — Roy Seery, 85, of Hay Springs, died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999 at Pioneer Manor Nursing Home. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12 at Chamberlain Chapel in Chadron with Rev. Gene Vanhuss officiating. Burial will be at 11 a.m. in Chambers, Neb. A memorial has been established for Hay Springs Rescue Unit. Donations may be sent to Security First Bank of Hay Springs. Chamberlain Chapel of Chadron is in charge of arrangements.

He was born Dec. 18, 1913 in Cario, Neb. to Fred and Edna (Hodgson) Seery.

He is survived by his wife, Ruby Seery of Hay Springs; daughters Wilma Dvorak of Chadron and Janet Quinn of Hay Springs; sister Pearl Westover of Burwell; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

George Wilhelm Jr.
SCOTTSBLUFF — George Wilhelm Jr., 42, of Scottsbluff, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999 at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. Funeral arrangements are pending at Jolliffe Funeral Home in Scottsbluff.

Mollie Cottrell
SCOTTSBLUFF — Mollie Cottrell, 88, of Scottsbluff, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999 at Regional West Medical Center. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16, 1999 at St. Andrews Episcopal Church with Rev. Lewis Warren officiating. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery in Scottsbluff. Friends may call 9 a.m.- 9 p.m. at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel in Scottsbluff. Family will be present from 6-9 p.m. Oct. 15 at the Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Andrews Episcopal Church or to the donor’s choice.

She was born May 23, 1911 to Jacob and Elizabeth (Rein) Pester. Her family immigrated to the United States in 1911 through Philadelphia and arrived in Fort Collins, Colo. on Christmas Day. They moved to the North Platte Valley in 1919. She received her education in Scottsbluff Public Schools. She married Richard Fletcher Cottrell on Aug. 18, 1933. They had one child, Dr. Richard Eugene Cottrell. For many years Fletch and Mollie owned Hightower Grocery in Scottsbluff.

Mollie was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church for more than 50 years. She served as vice-president and president of the Southwest District of Episcopal Church Women, president of the Church of General Guild and president of Altar Guild. She was a member of PEO, Chapter GA, for 25 years where she also served as president. She was also a member of DOES, Drove 21, Scottsbluff for more than 50 years, serving as president and treasurer. She was honored with several national appointments and a life membership in DOES. She had a lifetime membership in PTA, was a member of American Society of Germans from Russia as well as the North Platte Valley Museum and Ladies of the Moose. For many years she served on the Election Board.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Richard Cottrell, M.D. and Cynthia Cottrell of Indian Wells, Calif.; granddaughter Catherine Griffin and husband James Griffin of Hinsdale, Ill.; grandsons and granddaughters-in-law Lang and Alison Cottrell of Newport Beach, Calif., and James and Monica Cottrell of Corona Del Mar, Calif.; five great-grandchildren; brother Jacob Pester Jr. of Minatare, brothers and sisters-in-law Henry and Ella Pester of San Antonio, Texas, Alex and Dorothy Pester of Minatare, sisters and brothers-in-law Lorraine and John Abel Jr. of Scottsbluff, Dorothy and Lon Nichols of Melbeta and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband and her brother Eddie Pester.

James L. Easton
LINCOLN — James L. Easton, 65, of Lincoln, formerly of Lyman, died Monday Oct. 11, 1999 at a Lincoln hospital. Funeral arrangements are pending at The Jones Mortuary in Mitchell.

Scott L. Hebbert
CHADRON –– Scott L. Hebbert, 43, died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999 at his home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999 at Berean Fundamental Church with Rev. Daniel Williams officiating. Burial will be at Whitney Cemetery. A memorial has been established for Berean Fundamental Church Building Fund or Hospice. Donations may be sent to Community First Bank of Chadron. Chamberlain Chapel of Chadron is in charge of the arrangements.

Scott Hebbert was born March 14, 1956 in Chadron to Myron and Doris Hebbert. He was affiliated with Dawes County 4-H Club, Farm Bureau Citrus Coordinator for 25 years and Berean Fundamental Church and Mens Fellowship.

His survivors include his parents, Myron and Doris Hebbert of Chadron; sister and brother-in-law, Beverly and George Sands of Belton, Mo.; his aunts, Florence Stamler of San Lorenzo, NM, Ruth Little of Rapid City, SD and Lois Lapp of Newunderwood, SD; one nephew, Benjamin; one niece; and a host of friends and relatives.

William (Bill) Neal Lindhorst
POWELL, TENN. — William (Bill) Neal Lindhorst, 56, of Powell, Tenn., died Tuesday Oct. 5, 1999 at his home after a courageous battle with cancer.

A memorial service was held Friday, Oct. 9, 1999 at McCarty Weavers Chapel by the Fraternal Order of Eagles of Powell.

He was born Aug. 9, 1943 in Scottsbluff, Neb. to Luella and John Lindhorst. He received his education in Scottsbluff. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He worked at Cape Kennedy for several years and then was an electrical engineer for Lockheed Martin at the Y-12 facility in Knoxville, Tenn. for the past 19 years.

He is survived by his mother, Luella Salamonsen of Scottsbluff; daughter Shana Nichols; grandchildren Brooke and Jeremy Nichols of Alphraretta, Ga.; brothers Donald Lindhorst of Gering, Neb. Francis Lindhorst of Merritt Island, Fla., Dean Lindhorst of Scottsbluff, Jack Lindhorst of Kirkland, Wash.; sisters Janet Neal of Concord, Calif. and Janice Roach of Mannassas, Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father and brother Harold.

Richard Lee Lindsay, Sr.
NORTON, KAN. — Richard Lee Lindsay, Sr., 66, died Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999 at his home. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Norton, Thursday, Oct. 14. Inurnment will be in the Norton Cemetery.

He was born Sept. 8, 1933 to Arthur and Ethel Lindsay of Scottsbluff. He married Shirley Dinkel on April 28, 1956. He was the owner/operator of Vacuum Sales and Services.

He had two sons and a daughter. His son, Steven, died in 1972.

During his lifetime, he received military honors by the Redd Harmonson Post 63, American Legion, Norton.

He is survived by his son Richard, his daughter Christine, his brother Robert, sister Gloria and three grandchildren.

Martin E. (Gene) Morgan
GERING — Martin E. (Gene) Morgan, 77, of Gering, died Thursday Oct. 7, 1999 at Regional West Medical Center. There will be no services. Cremation was held at Sunset Memorial Park Crematory. Burial will be at West Lawn Cemetery in Gering at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Panhandle Humane Society. Gering Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

He was born Jan. 26, 1922 in Henry to Mahlon C. and Pearl (McNeal) Morgan.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Morgan of Gering; daughters Dana C. Morgan of Greeley, Colo., and Tracy L. La Force of Holstein; granddaughters Devrin L. Wimberley of San Diego, Calif., Tara C. Plambeck of Bladen, and Whitney Morgan of Gering; grandson Stephen L. Morgan of Fort Worth, Texas; two great-grandsons; sister Mary Lou Crom of Gering; brother Maynard Morgan of Gering and his best friend Scotty Lee.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and infant grandson.

Judy Margaret Reed
SCOTTSBLUFF — Judy Margaret Reed, 68, of Scottsbluff, died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999, at her home. Funeral arrangements are pending at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel.

Betty M. Todd
KIMBALL - Betty M. Todd, 77, of Kimball, died Sunday, October 10, 1999, at the Beverly Health Care Center in Sidney. No funeral service is scheduled. Visitation hours are 1-5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999 at the Cantrell Funeral Home in Kimball. The family will be available to greet friends 2-4 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial gifts may be made to the Betty M. Todd Memorial Fund.

She was born March 28, 1922 in Rising City to Cor L. and Mamie (Ballet) Harris. She attended public schools in Rising City. Betty and Henry H. Todd were married on December 28, 1949 in Cheyenne, Wyo. They lived in Pine Bluffs, Cheyenne and Wheatland, Wyo. for a number of years before moving to Deming, N.M. While living in Deming she worked as a secretary and bookkeeper. They lived in Deming for 10 years and returned to Kimball 4 years ago.

She is survived by her husband Henry of Kimball, one daughter Rebecca K. Matheson of Deming, N.M., one grandson Brian Todd Crafton of Deming, N.M., one great-grandson Brandon Todd Crafton of Deming, N.M., two sisters Lucile Way and Iva Way both of Schuyler; also a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers.

George Joe Wilhelm Jr.
SCOTTSBLUFF — George Joe Wilhelm, Jr., 42, of Scottsbluff, died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999 at the Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999 at the Jolliffe Funeral Home in Scottsbluff. Private inurnment will be held at Fairview Cemetery preceding the funeral. Cremation was held at Sunset Memorial Park in Scottsbluff.

He was born Jan. 26, 1957 at Riverside, Calif., to George Joe and Gladys D. (Honstein) Wilhelm, Sr. He grew up and received his education in Riverside and Scottsbluff. He moved to Scottsbluff in 1990 where he worked for Dalton’s Auto Center as an autobody mechanic and tow truck driver until going to work for Garcia’s Auto Center. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his parents George J. and Betty J. Wilhelm Sr. of Scottsbluff and Gladys D. Lyman of Highland, Calif.; sisters Deborah Browning of Tacoma, Wash., Cynthia Rodgers of San Bernardino, Calif., Terry Linn Robey of Fontana, Calif., and Tamara Lyman of Highland, Calif.; brothers Daniel A. Lyman of San Bernardino, Calif., Richard Robey of Scottsbluff, and Dennis Robey of Yucaipa, Calif.; maternal grandmothers Elma E. Honstein of Mitchell, and Elnora Rodgers of Redmond, Ore.; and special friend Ed Garcia of Scottsbluff.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.
