Gloria Breault
Gloria J. Breault, 85, Hastings, died Thursday at Mary Lanning Healthcare in Hastings. She was born March 7, 1931, one of nine children of Raymond and Mabel (Moore) Lewis of Aurora, Kan.
She lived on the family farm near Aurora and attended grade school at the rural school near her home. She was a graduate of Concordia High School. Following graduation, she worked for her father at the co-op in Aurora. While working there, she met Hubert Breault. They were united in marriage at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Aurora on Feb. 21, 1950. To this union, six children were born.
Prior to 1965, they lived on the family farm. In 1965, they moved to Hardy, where she worked at the Hardy co-op and drove school bus for the Superior schools. Gloria worked for H&R Block in Hastings as a tax preparer for many years until she retired at age 73. In January 1992, she and Hubert moved to Good Samaritan Village in Hastings, where she resided at the time of her death. Visiting with her family, especially grandchildren and great-grandchildren, brought her much happiness.
Gloria was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Breault; granddaughter, Angela Langenberg; grandson, Jordan Fisk; two great-granddaughters, Aubrey Fogel and Sydney Berns; great-grandson, Theo Hawkins; three brothers, Raymond Jr., Glenn and Donald Lewis; and three sisters, Norma Lee Istas, Berniece Burt and Shirley Vincent.
Survivors include her children: Judy Hill, Hastings; Steve Breault, Hastings; Juanita Eckhardt, Hastings; Mrs. David Brown (Linda), Hastings; Mrs. Kent Thelander (Nancy), Hastings; and Marilyn White, Lincoln, Neb.; 17 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and brothers, Jim Lewis and Bob Lewis.
Services were held Tuesday at First St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hastings, with Pastor Andrea Paulson officiating. Burial was in Parkview cemetery, Hastings. Livingston Butler Volland Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Hastings, was in charge of the arrangements.

JoVena Anderson
JoVena Marie (Sidders) Anderson was born March 26, 1939, at Woodward, Okla., to Sid and Illa (Bodenhiemer) Sidders, and died, Tuesday, July 26, 2016, at her residence in Formoso, Kan.
JoVena was a graduate of Winfield High School. She met and married Jackie Anderson on Nov. 27, 1967, at Miami, Okla.
She was a homemaker and a trust officer for Boatman's Bank in Kansas City.
JoVena was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Dinina Uglow; and two brothers.
She is survived by her husband, Jackie, of the home; son, Daniel Jensen, Concordia, Kan.; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
JoVena requested cremation, with no service scheduled at this time. Inurnment of the cremains will be in the Balch cemetery, Formoso, Kan., at a later date. Melby Mortuary, Mankato, Kan., was in charge of arrangements.

Berneita McElroy
Berneita Marie McElroy was born June 20, 1923, in Jewell, to Roy Smith and Zelma Lenora Smith. Berneita died at the age of 93 years, one month and five days on July 25, 2016, in her home in Boaz, Alab., surrounded by her family.
Berneita graduated from Randall, Kan., Rural High School in 1941.
Aug. 2, 1942, Berneita married Carl Lee McElroy in Mankato, Kan., where they spent their life together. To this union two children were born, Sharon Ann and Warren Allen.
She was preceded in death by Carl, her husband of 65 years; brother Francis; and both parents.
She is survived by: children Sharon Ann Walton, Boaz, Ala., and Warren Allen McElroy and fiancee Susan Tobias, Signal Hill, Calif.; two grandchildren, Rachel Ann Walton, Petersburg, Va., and Carrie Marie and husband Mark Burger, Sardis, Ala.; and two great grandchildren, Madison Leah Burger and Sarah Jane Burger.
Berneita was devoted to taking care of her family. She also worked for Mankato Kansas School District USD 278 as grade school secretary for 20 years until retirement in 1988. After retirement, Berneita and Carl traveled throughout the country visiting all but three states.
She was a faithful member of the Christian Church and a lifetime member of the Order of Eastern Star in which she held many offices. Some of her many hobbies included: ceramics, collecting thimbles, sewing, crocheting, reading and following all types of college sports. Berneita was active in the Garden Club and was known for growing award winning African violets.
After 91 years of living in Kansas, in 2014 Berneita and her daughter, Sharon, moved to Boaz, Ala. In her final years of life she experienced great joy surrounded by three generations of family.
A celebration of life service for Berneita Marie McElroy was held Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2016. at 10 a.m., at the Christian Church, Mankato, Kan., with Pastor Thaddeus Hinkle officiating. Mrs. Dena Alverez served as the pianist and Pastor Thaddeus Hinkle sang "Old Rugged Cross" and "In The Garden." Casket bearers were: Todd Kimminau, Elliott Kimminau, Lloyd Johnson, Harold Lippold, Nelson Moser and John Dewey. Honorary casket bearers were Donald Hamilton and Shaun Davis. Order of the Eastern Star, Naomi Chapter 29, Beloit, Kan., offered up graveside service to honor Berneita McElroy's many years of service. Interment was in the Wallace cemetery, Jewell, Kan., next to her husband, Carl. Visitation was Sunday, July 31, 2016, from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., and Monday, Aug. 1, 2016, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Melby Mortuary, Mankato.

Helen Ahlman
Helen Marie Ahlman, age 81, of Mankato, Kan., died July 28, 2016, in Wichita, Kan. She was born Oct. 16, 1934, in Laurel, Neb.
Helen and her husband, Fred (Fritz) Ahlman, built and owned the Crest Vue Motel in Mankato from 1963 to 1982. Fritz died Feb. 20, 2009.
Helen is survived by her children, Chuck (Deborah) Harder of Meridian, Idaho, Susan (John) Sheehan of Topeka, Kan., Jerry (Stacie) Harder of Salina, Kan., and Ann (David) Shields of Derby, Kan.
Visitation was held from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, July 31, followed immediately by funeral services. Visitation and funeral were at the Roselawn Memorial Chapel, Salina, Kan., with Pastor Dennis Beckmann of Mankato officiating.

Lynn Winslow
Lynn H. Winslow, 80, died Aug. 31 at the Smith County Long Term Care in Smith Center. He was a soil conservationist. Lynn, the son of Lester and Myrtle (Renken) Winslow, was born in rural Smith County, May 27, 1936.
Survivors include his sons, Kevin Winslow, Kansas City, Mo., Brian and wife, Denise Winslow, Lebanon; two grandchildren; and a sister, Joyce Kattenberg, Mesa, Ariz.
Visitation was held at the Simmons-Rentschler Mortuary in Smith Center. His funeral was held at the Lebanon Christian Church. Burial followed in the Sweet Home cemetery, rural Lebanon.
Arrangements were made by Simmons-Rentschler Mortuary of Smith Center.

Nick Boden
Nicholas M. "Nick" Boden was born Dec. 15, 1925, in old Tipton, Kan., to Mike and Cecilia (Brummer) Boden. He died Oct. 9, 2016, at the Mitchell County Hospital Health System, Beloit, Kan., at the age of 90 years, 9 months and 23 days.
Nick played in his Dad's dance band in his younger years. He was in World War II, serving with the United States Army at the Battle of the Bulge in Luxembourg and Belgium. Nick received a purple heart for his injuries.
He met and married Arleta Haines in August of 1952. They lived in Covert, Downs, Webber and Mankato. To this union four sons were born, Virgil, Randy, Rodney and Jeff.
Nick married Phyllis Small on March 13, 2004. They stayed on the farm until they retired and moved to Mankato.
He liked to give fruit and watermelons to his neighbors.
Nick was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Rodney; and two brothers, Mike and Edgar.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis, of the home; three sons, Virgil and Randy of Downs, Kan., and Jeff of Charlotte, N.C.; grandson, Shane Boden, of McPherson, Kan.; sister, Lorene, and her husband, Chuck Townsend, of Beloit; three brothers, Bud Boden of Ionia, Kan., Jerome of Beloit, and Charles, and wife, Lucile Boden, of Concordia, Kan.; three sisters-in-law, Patsy. and husband. Ed Sims, Shelby Johnson and Linda Nees.
His funeral will be held be held Friday at the Harmony United Methodist Church, Mankato, Kan., with Pastor Gerry Sharp officiating. Mrs. Pat Grout will serve as the organist and Pastor Thaddeus Hinkle, the soloist, will sing "Go Rest High on the Mountain" and "Old Rugged Cross." Casketbearers will be Delvin Hanson, Jack Wilson, Todd Boxum, Max Freeman, Max Hulbert, Randy Slate, Paul Wilson and Lynn Scarrow. Honorary casketbearers will be Ronald Boxum and Mitchie Woerner. Interment will follow with military honors by the United States Army Honor Guard, Fort Riley, Kan. V.F.W. Post No. 7830, Mankato, and the Jewell American Legion Post 72, Jewell, Kan., in the Wallace cemetery, near Jewell. Visitation was Wednesday, and today (Thursday) from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Melby Mortuary, 402 N. High Street, Mankato. The family has suggested memorials to the American Cancer Society. Online condolences can be left at www.melbymortuary.com. Melby Mortuary, Mankato, Kansas, was in charge of arrangements.

Michael Garst
Michael Eugene Garst, 63, died last Sunday. He was born in Beloit on Jan. 10, 1953, to Franky and Doris (Diers) Garst.
He grew up in southern California and graduated from Carson High School in 1971. He enlisted in the USAF where he served as a jet mechanic on the F-4, C-141, C-5 and various helicopters. After an honorable discharge he returned to southern California where he met and married Donna (Howell) Garst. To this union was born a daughter, Julie Dawn.
Mike graduated from Life Pacific College with a B.A. in pastoral studies and was an ordained minister with the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel. He pastored churches in Southern California and Arizona and later pursued post graduate certificates in CPE and ACPE. He served as a hospital chaplain at Yuma Regional Medical Center, Loma Linda University Medical Center and was director of chaplains at Corona Community Hospital. In 1993 the family moved to Glasco and he began working for the United States Postal Service. He served as postmaster in Randall and Burr Oak, and retired as postmaster in Glasco in 2015.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Frankie Lee and Douglas Scott Garst.
He is survived by his wife, Donna; his daughter, Julie Nixon; and grandson, Cory David Nixon.
His funeral was held Thursday at the Glasco United Methodist Church with Pastor Loren Houltberg of Emmanuel Foursquare Church, Salina, officiating. Cremation was chosen and his ashes will be placed in Arlington National cemetery. Dean Funeral Home, Glasco, was in charge of arrangements.

Dean Hall
Frankie Dean Hall, the son of Ray and Muriel (Lowe) Hall, was born on Dec. 26, 1931, in Superior, Neb. He died on Oct. 4, 2016, at his residence in Superior, Neb., at the age of 84 years, nine months and eight days.
Dean attended school in Hardy, graduating from Hardy High School. A veteran of the Korean War, Dean enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on Jan. 26, 1951, serving his country and was honorably discharged on Jan. 25, 1954. While in the service, Dean was united in marriage to S. Maxine Montgomery on Nov. 8, 1952, at San Pedro, Calif. This union was blessed with one son and three daughters.
Dean was a 19 year member of the Superior Church of Christ, being baptized by Pastor Jim Stark on Nov. 2, 2008. He was employed at Ideal Cement, retiring after 36 years. Dean was a 20 year member of the Superior Volunteer Fire Department, serving as secretary for five of those years.
In his leisure time, Dean enjoyed fishing, camping and attending local auctions. Time with family and friends was very important to Dean.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Maxine, on Dec. 31, 2015; his brother, Raymond, and sister, Glenna Bridwell.
He will be dearly missed by his family: son, Edmon Hall, and wife, Paula, of Adams, Neb.; Debra Harris of Malawi, Africa; Jacqueline Albertson and husband, Rick, of Republic, Kan.; and Sandra Nelson and husband, Kendall, of Formoso, Kan.; six grandchildren, Maranda Bradfield, Laura Harris, Joshua Hall, Tisha Johnston and husband, Perry, Jared Nelson and wife, Tricia, Jason Nelson and fiance, Haley; two great-grandchildren, Paden Johnston and Isaac Nelson; brother, Melvin Hall of Prineville, Ore.; nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral with military honors was held on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. from the Megrue-Price Funeral Home in Superior, Neb., with Pastor Jim Stark officiating.
Music was recordings of "Swing Low Sweet Chariot," "Go Rest High on the Mountain" and the "Marine Hymn (Halls of Montezuma)."
Pallbearers were Maranda Bradfield, Tisha Johnston, Laura Harris, Jason Nelson, Jared Nelson and Joshua Hall.
Private family inurnment held the Rosemound cemetery at Hardy, Neb.
Memorials directed to the family for later designation.

Slavomir Vodehnal
Slavomir J. "Slavy" Vodehnal, 81, of Clarkson died Thursday, June 10, 2004, at his home.
Vodehnal was born May 25, 2004, north of Clarkson in Stanton County. He graduated from Clarkson high in 1941. He enlisted in the Navy on Dec. 7, 1942, and was trained as a radar man. He was discharged on Dec. 4, 1945. He then returned to Clarkson and worked for Humlicek and Novotny Tailor Shop and Dry Cleaning. He married Gerry Zidko on Aug. 16, 1965, in Gregory, S.D. He worked at Clarkson Bank in 1948 and retired in 1987.
He was a member of Clarkson Commercial Club, VFW, American Legion, Lions Club, Clarkson Community Band, Board of Directors for Clarkson Bank, Memorial Hospital Board in Schuyler, charter member of Clarkson Historical Society, Clarkson High School Foundation, and was president of Colfax County Veterans Service Organization. He was a weather correspondent to Channel 7, was involved with the U.S. Weather Service, was on the first committee for Czech Festival and taught Czech language classes through Platte Community College.
Survivors include: his wife; a sister Vlasta Arledge-Jensen of Calif.; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his infant brother. The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at SS Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Clarkson with the Rev. Floyd Wessling officiating. Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. Sunday, and a wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, both at the church. Burial will be in Clarkson National cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by Cornhusker VFW Post 6419.
Memorials have been established to Clarkson Historical Opera House and St. John Neumann Catholic School. Miller Funeral Home in Clarkson is in charge of arrangements.
