Francis Eugene Young

Francis Eugene Young, 79, went to live with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, January 01, 2008. He died at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook, Nebraska.

He was born September 4, 1928, at Magnet, Nebraska to Clarence and Anna Mae (Mitchell) Young. While growing up, he and his family lived in Boyd, Knox, Pierce and Holt counties. He attended school at Chambers.

He was married to Leanna Mae Trebold at Chambers, Nebraska September 29, 1947. To this union one daughter, Eileen Kay, was born. They celebrated their 60th anniversary in 2007.

Francis worked on a ranch south of Atkinson until 1949. They moved to Kearney in 1949 where he was a crane operator for the Department of Roads for 14 years. They owned and operated the Rodeo Motel and Trailer Court for five years. He then had his own crane business, Young’s Crane Service, for 30 years. In 1994 he retired and they moved to Carthage, Missouri to enjoy their retirement years. In 2004 they moved to McCook to be close to their daughter and family.

He accepted the Lord as his personal Savior in 1951 and has been involved in the Lord’s work since that time. He is a member of the McCook Evangelical Free Church.

Preceding him in death were his parents and one sister, Flossie Hansen.

He is survived by his wife, Leanna of McCook; daughter and son-in-law, Eileen and George Young of McCook; three grandchildren and spouses, Greg and Jennifer Young of Lincoln, Angela and Jason Downs of Lincoln, Kyle and Amanda Young of Humbolt, SD; two great-grandsons, Michael Young and Seth Downs; two sisters and spouses, Betty and Lee Mitchell of Meridian ID, Darlene and Bernie Hoerle of Columbus; six brothers and spouses, Harold and Norma Young of Columbus, Burl Young and wife, Joanne of Meridian, ID, Richard Young and wife, Elaine of Columbus, NE, William and Karen Young of Caldwell, ID, Ronald and Hazel Young of Nampa, ID, Clarence and Patricia Young of Hansville, WA; and brother-in-law, Merl Hansen of Meridian, ID.

Memorials were to be given in his name to the McCook Evangelical Free Church or to McCook Community Home Health and Hospice.

Funeral services were Friday at 2 p.m. at the Evangelical Free Church in McCook with Pastor Bruce Lester officiating. Burial took place in the Kearney cemetery at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday.

Harley E. Ward

Harley E. Ward, age 81, died Monday, May 12, 2008 at Heritage of Wauneta Nursing Home in Wauneta.

He was born May 9, 1927 to William W. and Clara (Geihsler) Ward in McCook. He graduated from Palisade High School in 1945.

He was inducted into the US Army on August 7, 1945 and served during World War II, and was honorably discharged on March 1, 1947.

Harley married JoAnn Sailors in Palisade on July 8, 1950. To this union six children were born. He worked for 2 years as a Gamma Ray Logger with the Atomic Energy Commission, living in five southwestern states. In 1956 they returned to farming in the Palisade area. He worked for the Soil Conservation District and was a school bus driver for Palisade schools for many years.

He was a member of the Palisade United Methodist Church, past member of the McCook Elks and Eagles, lifetime member of the Palisade American Legion post #318 and past school board member.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Clara; and daughter, Glenda.

He is survived by his wife, JoAnn of Palisade; son, William Ward and wife, Nancy of Palisade; daughters, Cindy Monnahan and husband, Tom of Palisade, Cathy Dunham and husband Dave, of Bennington, Kansas, Cheri Hahn and husband, Kirk of McCook, Dwana Flaig and husband, Ed of Palisade; brother, Alfred Ward and wife, Freda of Grand Junction, Colorado; and 17 grandchildren, Brett, Bethany, Brian and Bart Monnahan; Jeremy, Nathan and Joshua Dunham; Venessa Ward-Sherman, Larissa Ward-Gerhartz, Sabrina and Andrew Ward; Andrea, Kasey and Kody Hahn; Shawn, Cory, Chadric and Kati Jo Flaig; and three great-grandchildren, Zachary, Lela and Addison.

Memorials were to be given to the Palisade United Methodist Church or the Palisade Volunteer Fire Dept.

Funeral services were Friday, May 16, 2008, 10:30 a.m. at the Palisade United Methodist Church with Pastor Judy Dye officiating. Burial took place in the Palisade cemetery with military honors.

Mary Cecelia (Kometscher) Walz

Mary Cecelia Walz of Indianola died Thursday, August 21, 2008 at Hillcrest Nursing Home. She was 88 years old.

Mary was born on January 31, 1920, at Lawrence, Nebraska to Henry Matthew and Catherine Mary (Kuppenbender) Kometscher.

On November 20, 1945, she married John William Walz in Indianola. To this union, six children were born. They made their home on a farm in the Indianola community where Mary was a busy homemaker and helped with the farming operation.

She was member of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church and Altar Society. She enjoyed quilting, cooking and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Henry and Catherine Kometscher; her husband, John Walz on Dec. 18, 2001; one great-grandson, Erik Werkmeister; daughter-in-law, Paula Walz; four sisters, Margaret, Elizabeth, Anna and Catherine; and five brothers, Herman, August, Steve, Lawrence and Leo Kometscher.

Survivors include one son, Bernard Walz of Indianola; five daughters, Sister Cecilia Walz of Waverly, Alice and husband, William “Dude” Tines of Venango, Mildred “Millie” and husband, Mike Cuellar of Indianola, Virginia “Ginny” and husband, Ben Bortner of McCook and Agnes and husband, Ed Richard, of Indianola; one sister, Frances Borgerding of Freeport, MN; one brother, Martin Kometscher of Lincoln; 14 grandchildren, Mike and (Lesa) Tines of Culbertson, Matt and (Chelsey) Tines of Grant, Chris and (Kim) Cuellar of Mullen, Jennifer Tines and Brenda Walz of Lincoln, Jamie Werkmeister of North Platte, Lisa and (Elton) Butterfield, Jill and (Carl) Koenig, Wayne and (Lisa) Bortner, Blaine Bortner all of McCook, Brian Walz, Kendra, Tyler and Joey Cuellar all of Indianola; 16 great-grandchildren, Jazmine Davenport, Jakub Walz, Jadyn Beavers, Bailey Walz, Landon and Reese Tines, Jarin and Brock Tines, Cory Cuellar, Paige and Jaxson Werkmeister, Becca and Addison Koenig, Kyler, Riley and Zoey Bortner, several nieces, nephews and friends.

Memorials were to be given in her name.

Rosary was on Sunday, August 24, 2008, 7:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial took place at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Indianola on Monday August 25, 2008, 10:30 a.m. with Father Thomas McGuire officiating. Burial took place in St. Catherine’s cemetery.

Isak James Wagele

Isak James Wegele, infant son of Mark and Shannon (Warford) Wegele was born prematurely on March 10, 2008 at Community Hospital. He went to be with his Savior the same day.

Survivors include his parents, Mark and Shannon of McCook, brothers, Robert Hale Enlow, IV, Dustin Dale Enlow; grandparents, Sheila and Dick Fisher of McCook and Doug and Janice Viter of Gothenburg.

Memorials were to be given in his name.

Memorial services were held on Monday, March 17, 2008, 11:00 a.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home.

Lionel R. Verraneault

Lionel “Boz” Rene Verraneault, age 84, died Thursday, August 14, 2008 at McCook Community Hospital

He was born to Hormidas and Emma (LaRose) Verraneault on August 11, 1924 in Norwich, Connecticut. He graduated from Plainfield High School in Central Village, Connecticut in 1941.

Lionel served in the United States Army from 1942-1946. During that time he was stationed at the McCook Army Air Base and served as an interpreter in France.

Lionel was united in marriage to Margaret Ely on September 16, 1944, in Oberlin, Kansas. Two children were born to this union. They made their home in McCook where Boz sold shoes for fifty years. He first worked for Gierhart’s Shoe Store and then continued as a salesman for Redman’s Shoe Store. He purchased the store in 1984 and owned and operated that business until his retirement in August of 1989.

Boz was always ready to talk sports and for many years officiated football and basketball games for schools in the area. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and was their biggest fan.

Preceding him in death were his parents; two sisters Doris Duval and Gertrude LaPorte; and one brother Pete Verraneault.

Survivors are his wife of nearly 64 years, Margaret; children Carol Ommert and husband, Larry of Cambridge and Steve Verraneault and wife Karen of Kearney; brother Jack Verraneault and wife Joanne of Little Rock, Arkansas, and sister Maedora Brouillard of Brooklyn, Connecticut; one granddaughter Andrea and husband Matt Mack of Grand Island; five grandsons, Jeff Ommert of Cambridge; Tim Ommert and wife Chrystal of Auburn; Ryan Ommert of Kansas City, MO; Greg Verraneault and wife Nicole of Omaha; Matt Verraneault of Kearney; and three great grandchildren.

Memorials were to be given in his name.

Funeral services were Monday, August 18, 2008, at Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Jeff Thurman officiating. Burial took place in Memorial Park cemetery.

LeRoy G. Ulrich

LeRoy G. Ulrich died Tuesday, May 13, 2008 at the age of 69 at his home in McCook

He was born February 22, 1939 to Louis and Francis (Richards) Ulrich in Oberlin, Kansas. He graduated from McCook High School in 1957.

LeRoy married Avis L. Sheldon on October 18, 1958 in Oberlin, KS. To this union two children were born, Byron and Shree.

He was a member of the McCook Elks Club, enjoyed old cars, boating, camping, fishing, grilling, gardening, yard work, being a carpenter and working on puzzles. He worked as a diesel mechanic for Automotive Sales & Service for over 40 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Francis Ulrich; one brother, Robert Ulrich; and two sisters, Carol Arrdal and Ann Geihsler.

He is survived by his wife, Avis Ulrich of McCook; one son Byron Ulrich and wife, Tanya of Grand Island; one daughter, Shree and husband Brad Arends of Grand Island; one brother, Ray Ulrich and wife Nancy of Rockledge, FL; five sisters, Mary Lou and husband, Bob Ross of Culbertson, Katherine Prater of Dublin, TX, Kay and husband, Dean Michel of Denver, CO, Heddy and husband, Wayne Reiners and Genny Mowe all of McCook; eight grandchildren, Jamie Sue, Jeffrey, Joslynne, Colton, Jesse, Elijah, Bobby and Clay; and 3 great-grandchildren, Alexis, Jonathon and Aliyah.

Memorials were to be given in his name.

Funeral services were Saturday, May 17, 2008, 11:00 a.m. at the Carpenter Breland Funeral Home with Pastor Clark Bates officiating. Burial took place in Memorial Park cemetery.

Jonathan Aloysius Ternes

Jonathan Aloysius Ternes, age three, died Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, after a courageous battle.

Jonathan was born on June 23, 2004 in Wichita, Kansas to Brady L. and Lisa A. (Lilienthal) Ternes.

Jon was best known for his love of reading, writing and learning new things. He continually amazed everyone with his sign language and spelling. Considering everything he went through, he always had a positive attitude. He just grabbed his buddy “Snooby” and kept going.

He was preceded in death by his great-grandmother, Virginia.

Survivors include his mommy and daddy, Brady and Lisa Ternes of Bellevue; maternal grandparents, John (Art) and Linda Lilienthal of Culbertson; paternal grandparents, Mikael and Mary Ternes of Wichita; and great-grandparents, Wish and Betty Ternes of Conway Springs, KS.

Memorials can still be given to the Jonathan Ternes Memorial Fund, First National Bank, 2008 Pratt Avenue, Bellevue, NE 68123.

Funeral services were Saturday, May 24, 2008, 1:30 p.m., at Trinity United Methodist Church in Culbertson with Rev. Richard Melano officiating. Burial took place in the Culbertson cemetery.

Joy Wilson Stevens

Joy Wilson “J.W.” Stevens died Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at his home in McCook. He was 95 years old.

Joy was born on November 23, 1912, in North Platte to Roy T. and Mary A. (Titus) Stevens. He graduated from McCook High School in 1930.

On May 5, 1950, he married Lorraine Sophia Marie Ostdiek at Denver, Colorado. To this union two children, R. Timothy and Kathryn, were born. They made their home in McCook where Joy worked for the railroad. He later became a self-employed painter until his retirement.

Joy was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. He enjoyed fishing, working on cars and woodworking. Making music boxes was his specialty.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Roy and Mary Stevens; his wife, Lorraine on April 21, 1997; one grandson in infancy; one brother, Leo Stevens; and three sisters, Wauneta Smith, Leona Ricketts and Eileen Lutz.

Survivors include his children, Tim Stevens and wife, Terri, of McCook and Kathy and husband, Joseph Barger of Wauneta; one sister, Donna and husband, Bud Kraker, of Beaverton, OR; eight grandchildren, Ryan Stevens and wife, Michelle, Jason Stevens and wife, Jami, Tara and husband, Andy Jernigan, Theresa and husband, Ken Dumont, Courtney Barger, Abby and husband, Matthew Ward, Peter Barger and Laura Barger; 14 great-grandchildren, Joshua, Andie, Corban, Kaden, Tré, Taylen, Blake, Bryce, Colton, Shawn, Trevor, Anastazia, Andrew and Amber; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Memorials were to be given in his name.

Rosary was recited at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Saturday, July 26, 2008, 10:00 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. with Father F. Val Bartek officiating. Inurnment took place in Memorial Park cemetery.

June Aletha Spickelmier

June (Barger) Spickelmier, age 84, went to be with the lord Monday March 24, 2008 at her home North of Culbertson after a six year battle with cancer.

She was born on the family farm Northeast of Culbertson on June 2, 1923 to Chester and Clara (Seybold) Barger. She grew up on the family farm and attended rural county school near her home. She graduated from Culbertson High School in 1941 and attended McCook College.

On January 12, 1945 she was united in marriage to Harvey Spickelmier in Oberlin, Kansas.

June worked as a sales clerk at Hesteds and Woolworth in McCook. She worked at the McCook Air Base during World War II. During her husband's service in the Navy, she worked at a school for disabled children in Haywood, California. She was a treasurer for Sunny Hill Sunday School and a Sunday school teacher. June was an avid collector of dolls and a member of the Dizzy Doller Doll Club for many years. She was a member of the McCook Christian Church.

June spent many hours with her children, grandchildren and great-grand children caring for them, attending sporting and other events.

She is preceded in death by her parents; one grandson, Benjamin Alloway; one brother, Robert Barger; two sisters, Marjorie Brichacek and Geraldine Thorsen; a half-sister, Doris Goodenberger; and two daughters in law; Marilyn Spickelmier and Debbie Spickelmier.

Survivors include husband Harvey of Culbertson; three sons, Russell Spickelmier of Culbertson, Merle Spickelmier of Hemingford, Dennis and wife Jules Spickelmier of Lincoln; two daughters, Carol and husband Rudy Alloway of Phillips and Norma Rogers of McCook; one brother, Donald and wife Dorothy Barger of Culbertson; one sister, Marian and husband Don Thorsen of Gordon; one half-sister, Vera Wacker of Grand Junction, Colorado; one sister in law, Joan Barger of Culbertson; and two brothers in law, Dwight Thorsen of Gordon and Bill Brichacek of Bloomington, Minnesota.

She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were Friday, March 28, 2008, 10:30 a.m. at McCook Christian Church with Pastor Clark Bates officiating. Burial took place in Memorial Park cemetery.
