Mildred A (Colling) Stratman

Mildred “Millie” A. Stratman died Tuesday, December 21, 2004 at Hillcrest Nursing Home. She was 84 years old.

She was born October 2, 1920 to Louis John and Susan Anna (O’Dea) Colling at McCook. She graduated from Red Willow High School in 1938. She lived in this area all her life.

Prior to WWII service she taught school in various Red Willow County School Districts. She entered the U.S. Navy in 1943 and was honorably discharged as a Pharmacist Mate 3rd Class in 1945.

On June 12, 1946 she married Alfred A. Stratman in McCook. To this union three children were born.

She and her husband were custodians at Red Willow/Republican Valley Schools for nearly 28 years; She was a columnist for the Indianola News for close to 20 years; a Pink Lady at McCook Community Hospital and had worked at Hillcrest Nursing Home for a time.

She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and Alter Society, the American Legion Auxiliary and Circle 12 Club and had been a long time member of the Friendly Neighbors Club.

Preceded in death by her parents; and husband on August 14, 1987; and brothers, Bernard and Donald.

Survivors include: two sons, Edward and wife Carolyn of Arvada, CO and Michael of Pompano Beach, FL; a daughter, Susan O’Neal and husband Russell of Grand Junction, CO; three brothers, Harold of Wichita, KS, George and wife Goldie of Augusta, KS., and Joseph and wife Bernadine of LaCrosse, WI.; three sisters, Lucille Hill of Seattle, WA., Delores Clifton of McCook and Marjorie Malleck and husband Gene of McCook; 6 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given in her name to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

Rosary will be Wednesday December 29, 2004 at 7 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, December 30th, 10 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in McCook with Father Jerrel Scholl officiating. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery in McCook. .

Visitation will be Tuesday until 5 p.m.and Wednesday until time of Rosary. Friends may also go online at www.carpenterbreland.com to extend condolences.

Jeffery James Sughroue

Jeffery James Sughroue died Monday, November 1, 2004, at Community Hospital in McCook. He was 48 years old.

Jeff was born on September 18, 1956, at McCook to James F. and Leah C. (Allen) Sughroue. He was baptized as an infant at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Indianola. He graduated from Chase County High School, Imperial, in 1976.

He entered the US Army, serving during peacetime, and was later honorably discharged.

On September 12, 1987, he married Marcia A. Fossen at Indianola. To this union two children were born. They made their home in Indianola where Jeff was self-employed as a jewel smith.

Preceding him in death were his grandparents, Elvin and Marion Allen and Frank and Johanna Sughroue; and one sister, Janine Sughroue.

Survivors include his wife, Marcia Sughroue of Indianola; his children, Kelsey and Nathan Sughroue of the home; parents, James and Leah Sughroue of Indianola; three brothers, Jay Sughroue of Denver, CO, Joel Sughroue of Grant and James J. Sughroue and wife, Ramona, of Indianola; three sisters, Jeanette and husband, Larry Munger, of Imperial, Julie and husband, Mike Anderson, of Cheyenne, WY and Jill Bartels of Indianola; and a host of relatives and friends.

Memorials may be given in his name.

Rosary will be Wednesday, November 3, 2004, 7:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel in McCook. Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, November 4, 2004, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Indianola. Father Nicholas Baker will be officiating. A private family inurnment will be at St. Catherine’s cemetery at a later time.

Visitation will be at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home in McCook on Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and Wednesday 9:00 a.m. until time of the rosary.

Lewis Leslie Hoschouer

Lewis Leslie Hoschouer of McCook died Wednesday (April 13, 2005) at Community Hospital of McCook. He was 90 years old.

He was born to Leslie W. and Emma Julia (Orman) Hoschouer at their farm in Hayes County. He attended rural school in Hayes County, high school in Curtis and Maywood and auction school in Sterling, Colorado.

On August 13, 1942 he was united in marriage to Dorene Rucker at McCook. To this union twin daughters, Karen and Sharon were born in Denver, Colorado in 1945.

They moved to Imperial in 1946 where they purchased the Imperial Auction Sales Company which he and his father-in-law operated for over eight years. He auctioned at their weekly sales and also auctioned farm sales. He later worked at the A.S.C.S. office in Imperial before moving to Greeley, Colorado where he sold cars at DeBrown Chrysler Plymouth until retiring in 1982.

He was a member of the Greeley Elks Club, the Golf Association and the Men’s Highland Hills Golf Association. He had two hole-in-ones in golf. He also bowled in Greeley and Imperial. While in Greeley he was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and belonged to the Pitch and Pinochle Card Clubs of the church.

They moved to McCook in November of 1993 to be closer to their daughters. He attended First Congregational Church in McCook.

Survivers include his wife, Dorene of McCook; and daughters Karen Radenslaben and husband Richard of Lincoln and Sharon Frakes and husband Leland of Trenton; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Fred, Julian, Glen and Loren.

Funeral services were Saturday, 2 p.m. at the First Congregational Church in McCook with Pastor Steve King officiating. Burial took place in the Hayes Center cemetery.

Memorials were to be given to the Heritage Senior Center or the First Congregational Church.

Eugene Gilbert Houghtelling

Eugene Gilbert Houghtelling, 78, died Thursday, July 14, 2005 at McCook Community Hospital.

Eugene was born on April 16, 1927, at McCook, to Gilbert and Millie (Roberts) Houghtelling. He attended McCook Public Schools. Prior to finishing his senior year he was called into duty to serve his country. He entered the US Army on November 14, 1945 and served during World War II. He was honorably discharged on November 12, 1948. In 2001, Eugene was awarded an honorable high school diploma from the President of the United States.

Eugene married Devona Mae Carr on June 17, 1950. To this union five children were born. They made their home in McCook where Eugene was employed as a salesman for Kitty Clover for over 25 years. After his retirement he became a custodian at McCook Public Schools.

He was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church, Veteran’s of Foreign Wars and American Legion. He was an avid Husker fan, loved being with his family, especially the grandchildren, and spending time gardening with his wife. He also enjoyed studying the Disciple Bible lessons with his loving wife Devona.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Gilbert and Millie Houghtelling; his infant daughter, Tira Houghtelling; two brothers, Charles and Milton; and three sisters, Norma, Elda and Ellen.

Survivors include his wife, Devona of McCook; two sons, Rady Houghtelling and wife, Jeanette, of Kalispell, MT and Rory Houghtelling of McCook; two daughters, Teresa and husband, Ron Mihm, and Tamie and husband, Bill Pew, all of Lincoln; 12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

Memorials were to be given in his name.

Funeral service were Tuesday, July 19, 2005, 10:00 a.m. at Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jeff Thurman officiating. Burial took place in Memorial Park cemetery.

Minnie Marie (Hoschouer) Huff

Minnie Marie Huff died Tuesday, December 14, 2004, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. She was 80 years old.

Minnie was born on April 27, 1924, at Maywood to Isaac Johnathan Delroy and Leila Dayle (Barton) Hoschouer. She graduated from Maywood High School in 1942.

On January 27, 1945, she married Amor Charles Huff at Marysville, Kansas. To this union five children were born. They made their home in McCook where Minnie helped keep books for their family business, Ernst Dairy. She also taught at Peace Lutheran Creative Pre-School for 17 years.

Minnie was a devoted member of Peace Lutheran Church, serving as Sunday School Teacher, Leader of Life-Light, member of Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, Prayer Chain, and volunteered hours of time quilting for missions and baking cookies for the children. In her free time she enjoyed sewing and crafts.

Preceding her in death were her parents; one sister, Ethel Christensen; and two brothers, Kenneth and Lyle Hoschouer.

Survivors include her husband, Amor Huff of McCook; son, Allen Huff and wife, Jean, of Sutherland; four daughters, Charlene and husband, Gene Wegener, of Bellevue, Talana and husband, Martin Roy, of Overton, Becky and husband, Dan Beirow, of Minden and Nancy and husband, Randy Brant, of David City; two sisters, Sylvia Rucker of McCook and Delma Snyder, of Maywood; two sisters-in-law, Jeanette Hoschouer of Chicago, IL and Marian Hoschouer of Ames, IA; 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Memorials were to be given in her name to KNGN Radio Station or Peace Lutheran Creative Pre-School.

Funeral services were Friday, December 17, 2004, 10:00 a.m., at Peace Lutheran Church with Pastor Randy Wahl officiating. Burial took place at Fort McPherson National cemetery, Maxwell, NE, at 2:00 p.m.

Harold E. Ike

Harold E. Ike, 83, of Cambridge died Monday, October 25, 2004 at the Cambridge Manor.

On December 5, 1920 he was born to John K. and Grace L. (Aman) Ike at McCook.

He married Margie Ichyanagi on September 29, 1947 in Kobe, Japan.

He served in the U.S. Army during WWII, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He worked for Stevens 7-Up Bottling Company and the McCook Daily Gazette. He lived in McCook from 1966-1996, Wilsonville from 1996-2000, and Cambridge since 2000.

He was a member of the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, VFW and the American Legion.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; his wife on November 9, 1994; a brother, George; two sisters, Dorothy Burnswick and Beulah Herron.

Survivors include his daughter, Katherine and husband Chester Francis of Wilsonville; a brother Harvey Ike of Commerce City, CO; one sister, Emma Chapman of Loveland, CO; two grandchildren, Suree and husband Bobby Schilz of Milford and Johnny and wife Tina Urling of McCook; five great-grandchildren, Jessica and Sarah Fritsch, Tristan, Kenidee and Kassidy Urling.

Rosary took place Wednesday, 7 p.m. at the Carpenter Breland Funeral Home in McCook. Funeral services were Thursday, 10 a.m. at the funeral home with Father Jerel Scholl officiating. Burial took place in Riverview cemetery.

Memorials were accepted in his name.

Lucille D. (Baumbach) Ireland

Lucille Ireland, 85, died Thursday, December 29, 2005 at Community Hospital in McCook.

She was born January 28, 1920 in Red Willow County to William and Lillian (Junker) Baumbach.
She was raised in the Ash Creek Community southeast of McCook where she attended school and was a member of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Indianola.

In 1943 she and Walter Frank Marsh were married in Denver. He died in 1952 while they were living in Chicago. She then ran the Indianola Café for several years before she and James Wesley Ireland of Benkelman were married in 1955 in Idaho Springs, CO. They lived in Denver where she sold cosmetics in the Walgreen’s Drug Store in downtown Denver for 20 years. James died in October 1975 and she returned to McCook where she made a home for her mother until her mother’s death in September 1976. In 1979 she moved to South Lyon, Michigan where she earned her real estate license and sold condominiums until she again retired in 1999 and moved to Willow Ridge in McCook where she lived until the time of her death.

She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in McCook.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her two husbands Walt and Jim; a grandson, Joey Marsh; and her sister, Virginia Stinson.

She is survived by her son Walter (Skip) and wife Mary Marsh of Indianola, grandchildren William and wife Kathy of Loveland, CO, James and wife Amanda Marsh of Omaha, Thomas and wife Monica Marsh of Odessa, MO, Shari and husband Brian Smith of Sarasota, FL, Julie and husband, Jason Pusch of Higley, AZ, Amy and husband, Paul Sweigard of Omaha; Robert and wife Krisi Marsh of Council Bluffs, IA, and David Marsh of Higley, AZ; fourteen great grandchildren; a brother, Howard Baumbach of Indianola; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Memorials were given in her name.

Rosary was Monday at 7 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel in McCook. Mass of Christian Burial took place Tuesday, January 3, 2006, 10:00 a.m., at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in McCook with Father Gary Brethour officiating. Burial took place in St. Catherine's cemetery in Indianola.

Dillworth A. (Rankin) Johns

Dillworth A. Johns, 92, died Saturday, December 10, 2005, at McCook Community Hospital.

Dillworth was born on August 18, 1913, to Johnnie J. and Clara L. (Crouse) Rankin in Goodland, Kansas.

On September 24, 1931, she married Francis Lynn Carpenter in Goodland. To this union three children were born. He preceded her in death in 1967. On December 29, 1970, she married Horace J. Johns in Miami, Florida. They made their home in Florida until his death in 1975. Dillworth then moved to McCook.

She was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Johnnie and Clara Rankin; her two husbands, Francis Carpenter and Horace Johns; and one brother, Clarence Rankin.

Survivors include her children, Johnnie Carpenter and wife, Carol, of Salt Lake City, Utah; and Larry Carpenter and wife, Barbara, of Boise, Idaho; and daughter, Glennis and husband, Harold Nagel, of Kearney; 11 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren.

Memorials may be given in her name to the Helping Hand Thrift Shop of the Methodist Church.

Visitation will be Tuesday until 5:00 p.m. and Wednesday 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Funeral services will be Thursday, December 15, 2005, 10:30 a.m., at Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook with the Rev. Dr. Jeff Thurman officiating. Burial will be at 2:00 M.S.T. at the Goodland cemetery, Goodland, Kansas.
