Albert G. Harder

Albert G. Harder, 84, died October 7, 2004 at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook.

He was born on October 2, 1920, at Denver, CO to George J. and Emma (Honstien) Harder. He attended several schools in Colorado and Nebraska. He graduated from Oxford High School in 1938 and attended Grand Island School of Business. He was employed by the CB&Q; Railroad and Burlington Northern Railroad for almost 47 years. He retired as a conductor in August of 1985.

On June 16, 1942, he married Erma L. Damrow at Benkelman, NE. He entered the US Army on June 23, 1942, serving in Company “M” 7th Reg. 3rd Infantry Division. He was later transferred to the 534th APU, in Africa, Sicily and Italy. He was honorably discharged on November 29, 1945.

Albert was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, U.T.U. Retirees, and McCook Elk’s Lodge and the McCook Masonic Lodge #135. He was also an avid fisherman.

Preceding him in death were his parents, George and Emma Harder; daughter, Lynn Kay Harder; two brothers, Elmer and Wilbert Harder; and two sisters, Elma McDonald and Dorothy O’Brien.

Survivors include his wife, Erma Harder of McCook; two sons, Wilbert Harder and wife, Carol, of Aberdeen, SD and Gale Harder and wife, Shirley, of Marshall, WI; sister, Lucille Harley of Salem, OR; one brother, George Harder of Americus, KS; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials were given in his name to the First Congregational Church.

Funeral services were Wednesday, October 13, 2004, 10:30 a.m. at the First Congregational Church with Steve King officiating.

Burial took place at Fort McPherson National cemetery at Maxwell, NE at 2:00 p.m.

Patricia J. (Bacon) Hecox

Patricia J. Hecox, of McCook, died Saturday, December 17, 2005, at Community Hospital in McCook. She was 59 years old.

Patricia was born on July 24, 1946, to Edwin Eugene and Shirley Patricia (Otis) Bacon. She graduated from Cozad High School in 1964 and Hastings College in 1968.

On December 28, 1969, she married Steve Hecox at Banner Methodist Church near Gothenburg. To this union four children were born.

Patricia taught elementary school for three years and was a paraprofessional for Special Education. She taught piano lessons, played the piano for the church choir and worship team, directed the bell choir, and accompanied high school chorus and contests. She was also a sales clerk for Peterson’s Grocery Store in Gothenburg and later for McCook Pharmacy & Medical Supply before her retirement.

She was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church, Eureka Chapter #86 Order of Eastern Star, Past-Bethel Guardian of Bethel #28 Jobs Daughters, and P.E.O. Chapter FA.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Edwin and Shirley Bacon; and one daughter, Brooke Kathleen Hecox.

Survivors include her ex-husband, Steve Hecox of Gothenburg; son, Bryan Hecox and wife, Michelle, of Brady; two daughters, Barbra and husband, Jason Jones, of Waterloo, Iowa and Brenda and husband, Andy Cochran, of Grand Island; three brothers, Charles Bacon and wife, Margaret of Lincoln; David Bacon and wife, Ginny, of Holiday Island, AK; and Gregory Bacon and wife, Carla, of Overton; and three grandchildren, Lauren, Braden and Alex.

Memorials were to be given in her name to the Order of Eastern Star or Memorial United Methodist Church.

Funeral services were Tuesday, December 20, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. at Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook with the Rev. Dr. Jeff Thurman officiating. Burial took place at the Peckham cemetery, Gothenburg, at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Janie Freeman officiating.

Mildred Berniece (Schilz) Heinbigner

Mildred Berniece Heinbigner died Sunday, July 17, 2005 at McCook Community Hospital. She was 76 years old.

Mildred was born on December 20, 1928, at Stratton, to Joseph M. and Grace H. (Wilkinson) Schilz. She attended Culbertson Public Schools.

She married Orville Paul Hazelton. He preceded her in death in1957. On July 1, 1961, she married Jake Heinbigner in Culbertson. They made their home in Culbertson where Mildred was a busy homemaker.

Mildred was a member of the Culbertson United Methodist Church. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and taking car rides.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Joseph and Grace Schilz; her two husbands, Orville Hazelton and Jake Heinbigner; two brothers, Joe Jr. and Alvin; and four sisters, Hazel, Darlene, Opal, and Hertha.

Survivors include her four daughters, Linda and husband, Bill Smitherman, of Bristol, RI, June and husband, Rick McDonald, of Culbertson, Cathy and husband, Tom Golden, of Charlotte, NC, and Sue Heinbigner of Culbertson; one brother, Delbert Schilz and wife, Beverly, of Denver, CO; grandchildren, Jessica and Sarah Golden, Tyson Smitherman and wife, Jessica, Justin Smitherman and wife, Shannon, Melissa and husband, Nick Weiss, Christina McDonald, A.J. McDonald and great-grandson, Jacob Weiss and great-granddaughter Lisha Smitherman; special niece Mary and husband, Larry Fahrenbruch, of Atwood, KS and their children, Janae and husband, Pablo Martinez and Shawn, Janelle, B.J. and Tarry.

Memorials were to be given in her name.

Funeral service were Thursday, July 21, 2005, 11:00 a.m. at the Culbertson United Methodist Church with Pastor Daniel Spearow officiating. Burial took place in the Culbertson cemetery.

BETTY SWIFT

Elizabeth “Betty” Swan Swift, 78, of North Platte, passed away Aug. 14, 2007 at Great Plains Regional Medical Center. She was born March 17, 1929 to John and Elizabeth (Swan) Swift in Kansas City, MO. Betty taught at North Platte Public Schools for 36 years. She will be remembered for her kindness, love, friendship, laughter, spirit and hope. Earth’s loss is heaven’s gain. She is survived by a son, John; a daughter-in-law, Valerie; a grandson, Joshua; sisters, Carroll Swift, Dolly Fulkerson, Susan Miller; and many friends. Memorials may be given to the Waging Tail Park or the North Platte Animal Shelter. Online condolences may be shared at www.carpentermemorial.com. TEDDY (TED) THAYER

Ted Thayer, age 83, passed away July 31, 2007 at the Veterans Hospital at Grand Island, NE. He was born March 11, 1924 at Maywood, Nebraska to Ora and Bernice Thayer. He served in the U.S. Navy from May 1942 until his discharge in June of 1947. That same year he was united in marriage to Maureen Falls. They had two children Mark and Teena. After his military service he farmed in the Dickens area until 1951 when he and Maureen operated a grocery store in Dickens until 1955. He returned to farming south of Dickens until 1975 when he then was employed by the A.S.C.S. office for ten years. He later owned and operated Ted’s Place in Wallace. He was an avid volunteer for the R.S.V.P. Survivors include his daughter, Teena (Craig Davisson) Melvin of North Platte, a sister Devona (Clarence) Latimer of North Platte, a brother, Lester Thayer of Dickens, grandchildren, Mitchell (Meaghan Evans) Melvin, Chelsey (Billy Osborn) Melvin, Trevor Melvin, Mark (Crystal) Thayer, and Kip Thayer, a great-granddaughter, Alexus Osborn and great-grandsons, Gage and Evan Thayer, two step-grandchildren, Jamie and Kelly and five step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maureen, his son, Mark, and a sister, Eva, a bother-in-law, Hap Fletcher and a sister-in-law, Vivian Thayer

LINDA L. KEPLER

Linda L. Kepler, age 67, of North Platte, passed away July 24, 2007 at Great Plains Regional Medical Center. She was born August 14, 1939 at Omaha, Nebraska. She graduated from Omaha North High School and later married Harlan Kepler on December 21, 1957 at Omaha. Survivors include her husband, Harlan of North Platte, her children, Michael (Sherri) Kepler of Burley, ID, Diane (Stacey) Sharp of Thief River Falls, MN, and Karen Kepler of North Platte, six grandsons, Greg, Steven, Steven, Michael, Seth, Jacob and a great-granddaughter, Lacey. Her parents, Joseph and Frances Rybin, preceded her in death.

MATTIE E. RUMERY

Mattie Rumery, 101, passed away July 22, 2007, at Linden Court in North Platte. She was born to W.C. and Lenora Crosby Washburn on March 2, 1906, at Riverdale, Nebraska. She was one of eleven children. The family lived in Riverdale and Sumner, Nebraska. Mattie graduated form Sumner High School in l924 and Grand Island College in l930. She married Myron G.A. Rumery on June 10, l934. They were teachers and both taught in Mason City, Nebraska, after their marriage and then they moved several times for Myron to teach in Newman Grove, Ravenna, Lincoln and North Platte. They settled in North Platte when Myron took a position with the University of Nebraska at the Experiment and Research Center where he worked for thirty years. After he retired, they maintained their home in North Platte but lived part of the next eight years in Lincoln while Myron served as the State Senator from the forty-second district. Mattie was involved in a variety of activities. Those dearest to her heart were those that were connected to her Christian faith. She took on many responsibilities at First Baptist Church including teaching Sunday School, serving as a deaconess and many different roles in the American Baptist Women Ministries including serving as their State President. She was honored in l991 as the woman who had been most influential in the history of American Baptist Women in the state of Nebraska. She received the Valiant Woman Award from Church Women United in l988. She was active in PEO, the Stationette Extension Club, Retired Teachers Association, Westerners, Rebekahs and the Lincoln County Historical Society. She served on the first Grand Jury in Nebraska that impaneled women jurors. Her devotion to her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren was evident to all who knew her. Her family remembers her as someone who was self-sacrificing, who made her home available to many, who taught them good values and modeled a life of faith. She also lived life to the fullest and had a wonderful sense of humor. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Bob and Margene Phares, her daughter-in-law, Pauline Rumery, grandchildren Brad Phares, Brian (Kathy) Phares, Amy (Jay) Engel, Scott (Nellie) Rumery, Jeff (Christine) Rumery and Kristin Luther, twelve great grandchildren and several loving and kind nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Myron, her son, Myron L. (Mike) and her five brothers and five sisters. Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church or the Grand Island Scholarship Fund at the University of Sioux Falls in Sioux Falls, S.D.

DOROTHY MARIE ROBERTSON

Dorothy Marie Robertson, 93, of North Platte, passed away February 11, 2011 at Centennial Park Retirement Village. Dorothy was born August 12, 1917, the oldest of five children, to Edward and Kathryn (Schwabe) Pelster at Petersburg, Nebraska. At an early age, she moved to Elsie, NE with her parents and attended country school in rural Perkins County. On September 7, 1937, she was united in marriage to Woodrow Robertson at Elsie. They lived and farmed on the family farm near Elsie until retirement in 1980, when they moved to North Platte. They celebrated 60 years of marriage before Woodrow’s death in 1997. She was a member of the Resurrection of Our Lord Catholic Church in Elsie and the Holy Spirit Catholic Church in North Platte. Dorothy was a volunteer for the Senior Volunteer Program of North Platte and Meals on Wheels for many years. Her grandchildren were her joy. She was a farm wife, homemaker, seamstress, and quilter and enjoyed her garden. Survivors include her son, Bill (Marian) Robertson of Elsie; a daughter, Donna (Phil) Harr of McCook; grandchildren, Brent (Amy) Robertson, Darin (Katie) Robertson, Greg Robertson, all of Elsie, Katie (Amos) Joseph and Brad (Julie) Robertson all of Lincoln, James Harr of Omaha, Renae Robertson of Santa Maria, CA, and Kristen (Jonathan) Lancton of Houston, TX; five great grandchildren; and a brother, Leonard (Chris) Pelster of North Platte. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; an infant son, Francis; a granddaughter, Maria Harr; a sister, Marie Sexton and brothers, Robert and Claytus Pelster. FRANCES LORRAINE GRANDY

Frances Lorraine Nicholas Grandy, 76, of North Platte, passed away Tuesday, February 8, 2011 at Sutherland Care Center. Fran was born September 4, 1934, eldest of the four children born to Delbert Arthur and Edis Irene (Eckhoff) Nicholas at their farm home in the Platte Valley Community west in North Platte. She attended schools at Platte Valley School and Hershey High School, graduating with the class of 1953. On August 28, 1953, she was united in marriage to Harold Dale Grandy at the Assembly of God Church in North Platte. They celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 2005. Dale preceded her in death on March 29, 2009. Fran spent her early years in the North Platte-Hershey area then later moved to Colorado and Arizona. She moved back to her childhood home in the Platte Valley Community following Dale’s death. She was a devout homemaker and gardener and loved to can her own fruits and vegetables. She was an excellent seamstress and sewed many of her own clothes. She is survived by her two sons, Harold and his wife Rosemary Grandy of North Platte and Brian Grandy of Columbus, Ohio; two brothers, Charles (Claire) Nicholas of Wellfleet, Dennis (Bonnie) Nicholas of Hershey; one sister, Mary (Orville) Kaschke of North Platte; three grandchildren, Amanda (Shane) Bishop of Glendive, Montana, Victor Grandy of Columbus, Ohio, Angela (Cody) York of Nampa Idaho and seven great-grandchildren. ELMA L REITZ

Elma L. Reitz, 89, of Sutherland, passed away February 8, 2011 at Great Plains Regional Medical Center. She was born August 17, 1921 to Alf and Mamie (Woodward) Wolf at Franklin, NE. In 1939, she graduated from Paxton High School. Elma was united in marriage April 27, 1943 to Harry P. Reitz at Ogallala. She resided in the Sutherland area since 1960. Elma was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Sutherland; Grace Lutheran Church Women; and the American Legion Auxiliary #0208. She enjoyed gardening and quilting. Elma is survived by three sons, Harry F. (JoAnne) Reitz of Sutherland, Larry E. (Diana) Reitz of Paxton and Jerry P. (Olivia) Reitz of Irmo, S.C.; a brother Earl Wolf of Ogallala; a half-sister, Sandi Ellenwood of Lincoln; grandchildren, DeLynn (Mike) Lamoree, Erick (Melissa) Reitz, Wade (Jaime) Reitz, Aarron (Jamie) Reitz, Jerry Reitz, Jr., Nathaniel (Mandy) Reitz, Larissa (J.C.) Corley, Melissa (Gene) Garner, Erik (Renee) Stone, Kristin McSwain and Michael (Kristi) Goff; 18 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. MARJORIE BUCHFINCK

Marjorie Kellner Berg Buchfinck, 83, of North Platte, passed away February 5, 2011 at Linden Court. She was born on Sept. 6, 1927 in Pierce, NE. to Oscar and Agnes (Winter) Kellner. Marjorie was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Pierce. She attended Zion Lutheran School through eighth grade and then Pierce High School for three years, graduating from Norfolk High School in 1944. After graduation she was employed by the DeLay First National Bank in Norfolk for six years. On June 4, 1950, she was united in marriage to George Berg at Christ Lutheran Church in Norfolk. The couple moved to Lincoln, NE. where George received his diploma from the University of NE. and Marjorie was employed by the First National Bank of Lincoln. They then moved to North Platte, where she worked at the McDonald State Bank, later known as the United Nebraska Bank for 30 years. She later marred Harry Buchfinck on May 14, 1977 in North Platte. Harry was instrumental in teaching her to play golf as she later became the North Platte Country Club Ladies Champion nine years in a row. She was also an avid bowler, whose team won the State Championship one year. She loved playing cards and rummy cube. Marjorie was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and the Kiwanis Club. She is survived by her sisters, Evelyn (Mrs. Charles) Hankins of Stanton, NE., Arlyce (Mrs. Gilbert) Schott, Maralyn (Mrs. Dale) Reznicek all from Norfolk and Frances (Mrs. Kenneth) Hansen of Peoria, AZ. She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, an older brother, Lloyd Kellner and a younger sister, Ruth Kellner Bruggeman. Online condolences may be shared at www.carpentermemorial.com. Visitation will be 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday with the family receiving friends at Carpenter Memorial Chapel, which is in charge of arrangements. Marge was fond of wearing hats and because of this the family requests that anyone wishing to honor her by wearing a hat for her service is very welcome to do this.

ROBERT LEROY SHANAHAN

Robert LeRoy Shanahan, 89, went home to be with his Heavenly Father on January 22, 2011. Robert was born April 16, 1921 to Thomas and Anna (Severyn) Shanahan in Schuyler, Nebraska. Robert (Bob) was the 5th of 7 children. He is survived by his youngest brother, John and Rosemary Shanahan, and one sister-in-law, Hazel Shanahan, all of Wahoo. Robert graduated from Malmo High School and joined the Coast Guard where he served our country during World War II from 1940-1946 in the Marshall Islands in the South Pacific. He was a Chief Petty Officer in charge of long range navigational systems. During WWII, Bob married the love of his life, Twila Belle Holtorf, on December 11, 1943. They met in Malmo, Ne. when Bob was a “big” first grader and Twila was a “little” Kindergartener. They were married almost 50 years when Twila preceded him in death in 1993. After returning from the War, he attended Millard Technical School where he received a degree in construction management. Bob later began working for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in Lincoln, Nebraska. He moved his family to North Platte in 1958 where he was the Met Life Manager for Western Nebraska for the next 40 years. Bob enjoyed the friendships he made and the people he helped throughout his career. Bob and Twila loved North Platte and found their home at Messiah Lutheran Church. Bob served on the Church Council, Stewardship committee, and was the Head Usher where he greeted everyone who came through the door. He was a member of the American Legion Post #163, (60years), VFW Post #1504, Lake Maloney Golf Club, Kiwanis, North Platte Wood Carvers Club, and volunteered at the Lincoln County Historical Museum and for Nebraskaland Days. He also enjoyed fishing with Twila on Lake McConaughy where they owned their red and white cabin and boat (GO BIG RED), sharing it with their children and grandchildren for many years. He was quite the story teller and had a gift of the “blarney”. His humor, positive attitude, and strong will lasted every day of his life. His advice to all of us was “Keep Smiling and Stay Positive!” Bob’s family meant everything to him. He is a much loved father and grandfather, who will be greatly missed. Bob is survived by 4 children and their spouses, 13 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Bob’s children include: Steve (Lynne) Shanahan, Ft. Collins, Colorado; Colleen(Ken) Waido, Ft. Collins, Colorado; Kathleen (Dave) Peterson, Cheyenne, Wyoming; and Lynn (Tracy) Shanahan, North Platte, Nebraska. Grandchildren: Kelly (Adam) Marshall, Marin Shanahan, Captain Patrick (Sarah) Shanahan, David (Chrissy) Waido, Anna Waido, Michael Waido and fiancé Sarah Freemyer, Thomas Waido, Amy Peterson, Daniel Peterson, Emily Peterson, Caiti (Luke) Brown, Tara Shanahan, and 2nd Lieutenant Sean Shanahan. Great-Grandchildren: Thomas, Andrew and Audrey Waido, and Hannah Belle Brown. Memorial contributions can be given to Messiah Lutheran Church or donor’s choice in his memory. Graveside services will be 3:00 pm Friday at Ft. McPherson National cemetery near Maxwell. Memorial service will be 11:00 Saturday at Messiah Lutheran Church in North Platte. Visitation will be 8:30 am to 8:00 pm Thursday at Carpenter Memorial Chapel with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 pm and also from 8:30 am until 1pm Friday.
