James Jessup

James B. Jessup, 93, of Scottsbluff, formerly of Harrisburg, died Wednesday, July 14, 2004 at Heritage Health Care Center in Gering. A family and friends gathering to celebrate his life will be held on August 14, 2004 at the Village at Regional West from 2 to 4 p.m. Cremation was held at Sunset Memorial Park Crematory. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Banner County Historical Society, Harrisburg, NE 69345, or the donor's choice. Tributes of sympathy may be left at www.geringchapel.com.

He was born March 24, 1911 near Minatare, Neb., to Frank P. and Marie (Barr) Jessup. He attended Horseshoe Bend School and graduated from Banner County High School.

After school, he farmed on his parents' Horseshoe Bend homestead. He met Mary B. Petrie of Denver and they married July 14, 1935. Their daughter Evelyn and son Alan were born on the homestead. They lived in Denver and California, where their son John was born in 1944. After WWII, they returned to the homestead until 1952 when Frank P. Jessup retired as Banner County Clerk and James was appointed to finish his father's term. James and Mary spent the next 15 summers on the homestead and winters in Mesa, Ariz. before moving to the Village at Regional West in 1991.

James is survived by his wife, Mary B. Jessup of Scottsbluff; son Alan J. Jessup and his wife, Susan, of Calif., son John F. Jessup of Kansas City, Mo., son-in-law Richard L. Wyatt of Calif.; grandchildren Karen Wyatt, Sandra Nyeholt and her husband Douglas, Steve Jessup, Scott Jessup and his wife Andrea, and Sally Jessup; and great-grandchildren Jameson and Taylor Nyeholt, Cailin and Colin Jessup; all of Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Evelyn Wyatt, brother Charles, and sisters Mary Alice Burchfield, Louise McBride and Geraldine Jessup.

Reva Johnson

Reva Loraine Johnson, 95 of Dix, Neb. died early Saturday morning, July 17, 2004 at the Kimball County Manor Nursing Home in Kimball.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 21, 2004 in the First Lutheran Church in Potter with Pastor Dwane Hunzeker officiating. Burial was in the Potter cemetery.

Friends were able to visit July 20 at the Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Lutheran Church or the donor’s choice.

Reva was born January 24, 1909 near Winterset, Iowa to Jesse and Edna (Chilcote) Poindexter. She lived in Iowa until 1920 when her father’s new job as a signal maintainer with the Union Pacific Railroad took the family to Dix, where she graduated from high school. Reva attended Hastings College and graduated from the University of Wyoming. She taught grade school for 18 years at District 8 School south of Dix, at Dix Grade School in Nebraska, and at Powell and Cheyenne schools in Wyoming.

On June 25, 1948 she married Verner Johnson of Dix and became a farm wife and homemaker. The family farm was her home until after Verner’s death in 1999.

She enjoyed cooking and caring for her family, gardening, music and gatherings of family, church groups and friends. She was an active member of the First Lutheran Church of Potter, and was active in the LCW and WELCA Lutheran Church Women’s organizations. She was a charter member of the Kimball County branch of the American Association of University Women, served on the Kimball County Extension Board, was a member of the Neighborettes Extension Club, served on the Dix Election Board, and participated in the Kimball Library Book Review Group.

She is survived by one brother, Walter Poindexter of Laramie, Wyo.; one daughter Jane Johnson of Casper, Wyo.; one son and daughter-in-law Ken and Sherri Johnson and granddaughter Crystal all of Dix, Neb., and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Verner, brother Wayne and sisters Helen Nelson, Vera Kane, and Mildred Baker.

Velora Atkins

Velora Lorraine Beck Atkins, age 89, aunt of Kendall and Howard Atkins of Dix, passed away Friday, July 16, 2004 at Sierra Vista Health Care Center in Loveland, Colo.

She was born September 23, 1914 to Carl Williams and Ural Hazel McCrea Beck in Table Rock, Neb. She lived in Sterling, Colo. and graduated from UNL and Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y.

On August 8, 1938, she married Glen D. Atkins in Lincoln, Neb. and they resided in Rochester, N.Y. until 1979 when they moved to Loveland, Colo.

Her husband died in 1998. She is survived by several cousins and seven nieces and nephews in Nebraska, Colorado, and Maryland, including Kendall and Howard Atkins of Dix.

Cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be July 27, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. in the Kimball cemetery with family members officiating. Friends may visit the family at Brookside Farm following the service. Memorials may be sent to the charity of donor’s choice.

Elmer Peterson

Elmer C. Peterson, 78, of Scottsbluff, died on Wednesday, July 7, 2004 at the Western Nebraska Veterans Home in Scottsbluff. Graveside services were held at on July 9, 2004 at the Kimball cemetery. Reverend Roger Gillming officiated. No visitation was scheduled. Cantrell Funeral Home assisted with the arrangements.

He was born on July 20, 1925 in Auburn, Neb. to Elford and Stella L. (Kelly) Peterson. Elmer graduated from Dix High School. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He worked as a warehouse dockworker for Ford Moving and Storage in Omaha. He lived for a short while in Sidney and moved into the Mt. View Towers in Cheyenne. In 2001 Elmer moved into the Western Nebraska Veterans Home in Scottsbluff.

He is survived by his brother, James Peterson and his wife Barbara of Dodge City, Kan., and his sister, Frances Annabelle Peterson of Cheyenne, Wyo.

Delah Sporhase

Delah R. Sporhase, 83, of Kimball, died on Wednesday, July 7, 2004 at Kimball Health Services. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, July 13, 2004 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Kimball. Pastor Ted Bourret and Vicar Earl Brown officiated. Burial was in the Kimball cemetery. Visitation was July 12 a.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Delah Sporhase Memorial Fund. Cantrell Funeral Home assisted with the arrangements.

Delah was born September 25, 1920 in Lanham, Neb. to John and Sophie (Knuppel) Lange. She married Albert “Al” Sporhase on March 22, 1947 in Hiawatha, Kan. The couple moved to Kimball in 1973 from the Grover/Hereford, Colo. area.

She worked for George Risk Industries (GRI) since moving to Kimball. She was active in her church and had been part of her church ladies aid group in Grover and with Zion Lutheran Church. Delah was currently a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Kimball and a member of the Hilltop Ladies Club.

She is survived by her sons, Delbert Sporhase of Cheyenne, Wyo. and David Sporhase and his wife Christine of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; her daughters, Charlotte Kissler and her husband Larry of Laramie, Wyo. and Esther Sporhase of Grover, Colo.; two brothers, Maynard Lange of Ovid, Colo. and Walter Lange of Blue Springs, Neb.; two sisters, Lorene Bethke of Davenport, Neb. and Loretta Sporhase of Syracuse, Neb. Seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren also survive.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Al on April 18, 2003, and a sister, Janice.

Billy Green

Billy E. Green, 82, of Kimball, died on Saturday, July 10, 2004 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Cheyenne, Wyo. Graveside services will be held Friday, July 16, at 2 p.m. (CST) at Palisade cemetery, Palisade, Neb. with his son, Jeffrey Green presenting a dedicatory prayer. Military Honors will be presented by the Palisade American Legion.

Schrader Funeral Home is handling arrangements in Cheyenne. Herrmann Funeral Home is handling arrangements in Palisade.

He was born on April 18, 1922 in Hamlet, Neb. He was a veteran of WW II, having served in the U.S. Navy. He worked as an accountant.

He married Linda (Perry) Green of Kimball on December 16, 1978 in New Mexico.

Billy was preceded in death by his parents, Bert and Lily Green, one brother, and one sister.

He is survived by his wife Linda; sons Jeffrey Green, Ft. Collins, Colo., Howard Green, Ronan, Mont., Billy Green, Heber, Utah, Leslie Green, Bozeman, Mont.; daughters Lizabeth Bryers, West Yellowstone, Mont., Joy Johnson, Idaho Falls, Idaho, Jessica Cool, Chandler, Ariz., Vanessa Moran, Tucson, Ariz.; a sister Retharose Ekendahl of Texas; 31 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Marcia Ross

Marci A. Ross, 41, of Scottsbluff, formerly of Banner County, died Friday, July 2, 2004 at Regional West Medical Center. A Memorial Service was held July 7 at WestWay Christian Church in Scottsbluff, with Pastor Willie Coop along with Michael Stein officiating. Her remains were cremated at Jolliffe Funeral Home and Crematory in Scottsbluff. Memorials in her name may be made to Camp Rock, Prairie Haven Hospice, or the WestWay Children’s Ministry. Marci was born November 30, 1962, at Scottsbluff, to Alan and Shirley A. (Buckendorf) Cross. She grew up and received her education in Banner County, and graduated from Banner County High School with the class of 1981. She attended the University of Wyoming and earned her Bachelors Degree in Music Performance in 1985. She owned and operated Classique Designs wedding shop in Monument Mall in Scottsbluff for a time. On June 16, 1989, she married Jeff Ross at Scottsbluff.

She and Jeff moved to Colorado Springs and Marci pursued her Masters Degree at Denver University. While there she played bassoon in numerous symphonies, orchestras and chamber groups in the Denver and Colorado Springs area. She also earned her Para-Legal degree from the Denver Para-Legal Institute and worked part time as a Para-Legal in Colorado Springs.

Marci and Jeff returned to Scottsbluff in 1999, and for one year, she researched the idea of opening a coffee shop. In 2001, she and Jeff realized their dream and opened Cappuccino and Company in Scottsbluff, which she was active in at the time of her death. She also worked part time at the Michael Meister Law Office in Scottsbluff. Marci was a member of AAUW.

Marci had a love for others, young and old alike, and her enthusiasm was unquenchable. She touched the lives of many people through all of her activities. She was an active participant in the lives of her children at Lincoln Heights Elementary School in Scottsbluff and will be greatly missed by her many friends and loved ones.

She is survived by her husband Jeff Ross of Scottsbluff; sons Blake, Taylor and Dylan, all of the home; her father Alan Cross of Scottsbluff; her brothers Joel and his wife Shelly Cross of Harrisburg; Mark Cross of Lincoln; James and his wife Lisa Cross of Harrisburg; and her sister Joni and her husband Len Russell of Scottsbluff. She is also survived by her maternal grandmother Hazel Buckendorf of Lincoln, her paternal grandfather Arden Cross of Gering, her Uncle and Aunt Dr. William and Susen Buckendorf of Springfield, Va. and her Aunt Sally Johnston of Lincoln. She was also special in the lives of all her nieces and nephews.

Her mother, her maternal grandfather and her paternal grandmother preceded her in death.

Lola Gadeken

Lola Gadeken, 89, of Bushnell, Neb., died on Sunday, July 4, 2004 at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, July 9, 2004 at the Cantrell Funeral Home in Kimball with Pastors Virgil Johnson and Richard Anderson officiating. Burial will follow in the Kimball cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10 AM to 8 PM on Thursday, July 8. If friends wish, memorial gifts may be given to the Nebraska Commission for the Visually Impaired. Cantrell Funeral Home is assisting with the arrangements.

Lola was born on August 15, 1914 in Bushnell to Charles and May Beatrice (Eisele) Evertson. She graduated from Bushnell High School in 1933. On June 1, 1938 Arnold William Gadeken and she were united in marriage in Sidney, Neb. Together they traveled the area while he was an extension agent. She assisted him by running 4-H clubs, particularly when they lived in Banner County. Later, her husband was stationed at Ft. Dix, N.J. where he was an Ordinance First Lieutenant. During his service overseas; Lola sewed leather bomber jackets for the war effort. During the war, she returned to Nebraska and enrolled in Capital Beauty School in Omaha, graduating in 1945. They later lived at Bull Canyon Ranch, where Arnold was a foreman, moving in 1953 to his family’s farm at Bushnell and, in 1974, relocatinh to her father’s farm.

Mrs. Gadeken was very knowledgeable of area history and enjoyed sharing this with others. She was a member of Golden Sheaf Rebekah Lodge #380 and held various offices including Noble Grand. She belonged to the Calvary United Methodist Church of Bushnell, First Baptist Church of Kimball, and later the Dix Bible Church where she taught many classes in Sunday school. Lola was active in various community clubs and organizations.

Lola is survived by her son John of Bushnell, two sisters in law, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Arnold on January 30, 1997.

Lois Romsa

Lois Romsa, 92, of Albin, Wo., died Thursday, June 17, 2004 at Kimball County Manor.

She was born Feb. 8, 1912 in Cheyenne, Wyo., was a farmer and attended Golden Prairie Baptist Church.

Memorial Services were June 29 at Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes in Cheyenne, Wyo., with Jim Brown officiating.

Friends who wish may contribute to Kimball County Manor or Golden Prairie Baptist Church.

She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Howard and Mary Kay Romsa of Albin and Harold Romsa of Casper, Wyo., seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Her husband, Hogan Romsa in 1990, and her parents, Charles and Bernice Kamerer, preceded her in death.

Adam Michael Jones

Adam Michael Jones infant son of MinDee Humphries and John Paul Jones of Kimball died on Sunday, June 27, 2004 at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, July 2, 2004 at the Bushnell cemetery. Cantrell Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Adam is survived by his parents, maternal grandmother Ebbi Humphries of Bushnell, paternal grandmother Dorothy Shelburne of Kimball; great grandfather Burton Humphries of Kansas, aunts Sandra Vrba, Janice Henton, and Debra Schadagg all of Kimball, Samantha Humphries of Bushnell, Bonnie Isaacs of Missouri; and uncles John Humphries of Bushnell and Larry Shepherd of Cheyenne, Wyo. Numerous other relatives also survive.

LeRoy E. ‘June’ Childers

LeRoy Ernest ‘June’ Childers, 78, a longtime Cheyenne County and Panhandle resident, died Wed., June 23, 2004 at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 Sat. morning, June 26th at the First United Methodist Church in Sidney with Rev. Roger Gillming of Kimball officiating. Burial will follow in the Kimball cemetery with Military Graveside Honors. Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 am to 7 pm on Friday. The family has designated the Sidney Public Library Audio Book Program or Building Fund or the American Heart Asso. as the memorials.

LeRoy Ernest Childers was born Jan. 26, 1926 at Nelson, Nebr., the son of Roy and Lillie Mae (Statz) Childers. He grew up on a ranch North of Potter and was raised by his mother and step-father John I. Filer. He attended school in Kimball and received his Honorary High School Diploma in May, 2000 from Kimball High School as part of the United States Department of Education's Honorary Degree Program. June enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Sept. 4, 1943 and served in WW II on LST 461 during the Philippine Liberation and received the following decorations; Asiatic-Pacific Theatre with 4 Stars, Victory Medal, American Campaign and Good Conduct medal. He was honorably discharged on Feb. 8, 1947. Upon returning to Kimball, he met and married loan E. Vavra on June 5, 1949. LeRoy and Ioan made their home in the Sidney Draw area raising crops, cattle and kids. They celebrated 55 years of marriage on June 5, 2004. LeRoy was a lifetime member of VFW Post #610. He was also a member of Sidney Elks Lodge #1894, Lodgepole Valley Saddle Club and served on School District 36 Board of Education for several terms and was always available to assist with 4-H horse projects. LeRoy was a loved and respected son, husband, father, uncle and friend. He enjoyed his horses, woodworking and learned to fix and repair almost everything. He loved his farm and family and rejoiced in every occasion for family celebration from holidays, anniversaries, weddings and the birth of new babies, both 2 and 4 legged. June also enjoyed gardening, reading, hot tubbing, fishing and spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends. From their first dance to his last long ride home 'June and Onie' created a legacy of love, honor and commitment. June was a quiet man who led by example and could always be counted on to do the right thing. He was aIways willing to lend a helping hand, give a word of praise and offer a hug for those in need. He believed a man's word was good and a handshake sealed the deal.

He will be greatly missed by his wife loan; his children, Kenneth and Jeri Childers of Sidney, Korla and Tom Keller of Bassett, Nebr., James and Kris Childers of Alliance, Michael & Julie Childers of Lakewood, Colo., Brian Childers of Cheyenne, Wyo., Phillip and Wendy Childers of Gurley, Nebr. and Coleda and Steven Schwaller of Lincoln, Nebr. his grandchildren Jeff and Donna Maddox, Jarrod and Kelli Maddox, Tom and Lisa Keller, Todd and Kerry Keller, Crystal and Alan Stegall, Amy and Brandon Sodon, James and Katie Childers, Casey Childers, Jordy Childers, Jacob Childers, Cody Childers and Max Childers; 10 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren; sister-in-law Irene Nelson and husband Leland of Bushnell, Nebr.; brother-in-law Larry Vavra and wife Toni of Kimball; many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lillie and John Filer, brothers, Max and Keith Childers, sister Maxine Taylor, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ed and Betty Robinson.

Gehrig Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Sharon Kramer

Sharon A. Kramer, 57, of Pine Bluffs, Wyo., died Friday, June 25, 2004 at United Medical Center-West.

She was born October 3, 1946 in Newman Grove, Neb. and had lived in Pine Bluffs for 20 years.

Mrs. Kramer was a clerk at the Texas Trail Market for four years. She was a member of Pine Bluffs United Methodist church.

She is survived by two sons, Daryn Triston Kramer of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Cory Kramer of Pine bluffs; a daughter, Cheryl Kramer of Cheyenne, and one grandchild, Jenna Kramer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alan Kramer in 1982; her parents Glenn and Avis Koenig, and a brother, Kenneth Koenig.

Services were held June 30, 2004 at Pine Bluffs Methodist Church with the Rev. Jeffery Babb officiating. Interment was in Pine Bluffs cemetery.

Services were under the direction of Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes in Cheyenne.

Robert H. Midgley

Robert “Bob” Hero Midgley, 82, of Kimball walked through the birth-gate of death, surrounded with love from around the world, on Saturday, June, 26, 2004. Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of his life will be held at 10 a.m. Tues., July 6, at the Cantrell Funeral Home. Internment of the cremated remains will be in Pinedale, Wyo., overlooking the mountains that remain his spiritual home.

Memorials may be made to the Southern Poverty Law Center, Habitat for Humanity, Lions Sight First, or by doing a “random act of kindness each day.” Cantrell Funeral Home is assisting with the arrangements.

Bob was born on October 10, 1921 in Worcester, Mass. to Frank and Marion (Hero) Midgley. With his family's support, he completed studies at Northeastern University. He continued his education at Andover Newton Theological Seminary from 1944-47.

During a summer ministry in Pinedale in 1944, Bob fell in love with Lois Arlene Rosendahl. They were married on September 4, 1945. These “two kids from the country” served churches in Green River, Wyo., Vermillion, S.D., Milwaukee and Madison, Wis., Rockford, Ill. and Honolulu, Hawaii. In 1959, a short-term ministry in Hamasaka, Japan added new dimension to his service. He returned to the U.S. deeply impacted by the people he had met and a visit to Hiroshima. It was his firm belief that we are all responsible to share love and heal the pain of the earth through a “ministry to the world and a Christian concern for other.” He put this belief into action as he served on the United Church of Christ Board for World Ministries and in his travels to Turkey, England and New Zealand. His words inspired many who followed his example.

In 1989, Bob and Lois moved to Kimball to care for her aging mother. They loved the western Nebraska country and retired here.

Bob touched many lives as he lived his belief that it is the responsibility of every citizen to give back in positive ways “as the rent you pay to live in the community.”

He served on the Kimball County Manor Board, and was an active member of the Lions Club with special interest in Sight First, Student of the Month scholarships, and the quarterly blood drive.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Leonard, and eldest daughter Janet.

Bob was graced with daughters Janet Marquardt, Joan Frances and Ann Frost; son-in-law, Jon Marquardt; six grandchildren: Jeff and his wife Paula Evans of Calgary AB, Sara Evans of Worcester, Mass., Kevin and his wife Colleen Marquardt of Comfort Texas, Jennifer and her husband Robert Smith of Maxwell, Texas, Libby Frost and Grant Frost of Red Wing, Minn.; three great grandchildren: Joshua, Alexandra Evan and Dustin “Dusty” Smith.
