Eldon Halstead
Eldon John Halstead, 78 of Dix, passed away early Sunday, December 15, 2002 at the United Medical Center-East in Cheyenne, Wyo.
Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20 at the First Lutheran Church in Potter, Neb. with Pastor Mary Frohs officiating. Burial with Military Graveside services will be in the Potter cemetery. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place.
He was born to Merton Eugene and Margaret Louise (Tjardes) Halstead in a farmhouse on Aug. 15, 1924 in Banner County, Neb. He attended grade school in Banner County and moved to Kimball for junior high and graduated from Kimball County High School. He was drafted and served his county as a Seabee with the United States Navy. Before becoming a farmer, he worked in the Safeway meat departments in Kimball and Holyoke.
On July 22, 1945, he was united in marriage to Lois Jean Nelson in the home she grew up in and their residence at the time of Eldon's death. His love for farming and ranching included 56 years of involvement in the business. He was an active part of the family operation until his death.
He was a charter member of the National Cattlemen's Association and the Dix Lions Club. He served on numerous boards and committees, including the Dix Board of Education, the Kimball County Fair Board, the High Plains Coop Board of Directors, the Kimball Farm Bureau, the First Lutheran Church Council and was very active in other church activities.
He had been a 4-H Leader and member of the Potter American Legion. He was an avid supporter of the area youth and his grandchildren's number one fan.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lois Jean of Dix; son, Bryce and wife Linda of Kimball; daughter Janet Bashaw and husband David of Dix; brother Donald Halstead and wife Margie of Castle Rock, Colo.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers William, LeRoy and Dale, son Ronald and a granddaughter.

Dolores Donna Jerred
Dolores Donna De De Jerred, 71, of Harrisburg, Neb., died Sunday, December 15, 2002 at Beverly Health Care Center in Scottsbluff, Neb. Services were Dec. 18 at Central Church of Christ in Gering with Howard Roseberry officiating. Cremation was at Sunset Memorial Park Crematory in Scottsbluff.
She was born Nov. 5, 1931 in Scottsbluff to Roy and Alma (McKinley) Knotts. She received her education in Gering and married
George Jerred June 5, 1948 in Alliance, Neb. They lived in Banner County their entire married
life, farming and ranching for several people including the Anderson Ranch for 35 years.
She drove school bus for Banner County School for 33 years. She joined the Central Church of Christ as a young girl, was a life long member of the Wrights Project Club, Banner County Historical Museum Board and the Banner County Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband George; daughters and sons-in-law: Margie and Bruce Madden of Sycamore, Ill. and Linda and Dan Barrett of Banner County; son and daughter-in-law Roy and Carol Jerred of Nauvoo, Ill.; brother and sister-in-law: Dallas and Caroline Knotts of Gering; sister and brother-in-law LaVay and Estel Reed of Julesburg, Colo.; 21 grandchildren and four step-grandchildren.
Her parents, brothers Donald Mac and Monty Knotts, sister Damares Hessler and an infant grandson preceded her in death.

Robert Brown
Robert E. Brown, 82 of Kimball died at Kimball Health Services on Wednesday, December 11, 2002. Funeral Services were Dec. 16, at the Cantrell Funeral Home of Kimball. The Rev. Ronald Nuss-Warren will officiate. Burial was at the Kimball cemetery with the presentation of the American Flag by representatives of Kimball VFW Post 2243.
He was born November 25, 1920 in Kimball to A.L. and Myrtle Jessie (Stribling) Brown. He grew up in Kimball and graduated from Kimball County High School in 1939. He served in the United States Air Corps during WW II from 1940 to 1945.
He lived in Fresno, Calif. from 1945 to 1991 and managed a service station there. He retired in 1984 due to his health. He was married
to Ruth E. Paradise on March 6, 1943 in Fresno. She preceded him in death on January 21, 1983. On March 18, 1988 he married
Geraldine (Kentfield) Brown at Reno, Nev. and the couple returned to Kimball in October 1991.
He attended the Kimball Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife Gerry of Kimball and one stepson Rodger Brown of Merino Valley, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, a son Gary L. Brown, brothers, Cub, Burt, and Douglas, and sisters Emma Brown and Ella Mae Snyder.

William Smith
William H. Smith, Jr., age 71, of Cheyenne, Wyo., died Thurs., Nov. 28, 2002 in Cheyenne. He is the father of Bruce Smith and Brett Smith, both of Kimball.
A Memorial service will be Thurs., Dec. 5 at 1 p.m. at Schrader Funeral Home Chapel in Cheyenne.
He was born July 18, 1931 in Hillsboro, Wisc.

William Sutton
William "Bill" Sutton, 80, died Fri., September 27, 2002 at Castle Garden Care Center in Northglenn, Colo.
A memorial graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Fri., October 4 at the Kimball cemetery with Deacon Bill Cota of the Kimball Assembly of God Church officiating. Cremation has taken place.
He was born Jan. 23, 1922 at Calisburg, Tex. to Callie Noble and Ethel (Griffin) Sutton. He attended school at Goodnight, Tex. and grew up there.
He married
Juanita Johnson on November 30, 1941 at Canadian, Tex. and they had two daughters. He worked on various ranches and in the oil fields, which brought him to Kimball.
He later married
Anne Vaughn at Laramie, Wyo. on December 23, 1958. In 1960 they purchased the Kimball Tavern which they operated until 1984. He then worked for Z & S Construction until his retirement in February 1999.
In March of that year he moved into the Kimball Manor and in 2001 he moved to Denver, Colo.
He is survived by his daughters, Ruth Alaine Martin and Jerita Ballander, both of Texas; stepson Dale Vaughn and wife Barbara of Arvada, Colo.; sisters, Vereda Hulsey of White Deer, Tex., Ouida Filman of Denville, N.J., and Floy Sexton of Amarillo, Tex.; brother Howard Sutton and wife Leona of Greenfield, Mo.; sister-in-law; 12 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Anne in 1987, his parents in 1991, a brother Jack in 1999 and one grandson.
A memorial has been established to the Kimball Manor. The Cantrell Funeral Home of Kimball is in charge of arrangements.
Jean Long
Jean Elizabeth Irwin Long, 88 of Kimball died at the Kimball County Manor on Friday September 27, 2002. Funeral services were 10 a.m. Tues. October 1, at the First United Presbyterian Church of Kimball with the Reverend Ron Nuss-Warren officiating. Burial was in the Kimball cemetery.
She was born Oct. 10, 1913 in Wood River, Neb. to Herbert and Alice (Grayson) Irwin. The family moved to Kimball in 1915, where she attended the Kimball Schools, graduating in 1931. Having taken Normal Training in high school, she taught in rural country schools and attended Kearney State College during summers.
She married
Harley Leonard Long Sept. 10, 1941 and lived on the family farm south of Kimball until 1955. She later returned to college and graduated in 1960. She taught 11 years at the Kimball Junior High School. She attended Denver University School of Librarianship and was Head Librarian of the Kimball Public Library from 1967 until she retired in 1978.
She was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church of Kimball, PEO, Friends of the Library and an honorary member of the Kimball FFA Chapter.
She is survived by sons, Leonard of Kimball and Richard of Kearney, four grandsons and one granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Harley on October 21, 1958, brother Jack G. Irwin and infant sister Margaret Irwin.

Margaret Adams
Margaret "Peggy’’ Adams, 88, of Kimball and formerly of Scottsbluff, Neb., died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002 at the Kimball County Hospital. She is the mother of Susan Calise of Kimball and sister of the late Dorothy Steele.
A funeral was Monday, Sept. 30 at St. Andrews Episcopal Church with Father Cope Mitchell officiating. Interment was in the Fairview cemetery at Scottsbluff.
She was born Aug. 6, 1914 at Scottsbluff, to Alexander and Maud (Martin) Meston and was raised and educated at Chino, Calif. Her family returned to Scottsbluff after her high school graduation and she attended Scottsbluff Junior College.
She married
Frank Adams in Scottsbluff on Sept. 16, 1938 and lived her adult life in Scottsbluff until moving to Kimball in 1994 to be near her daughter. She was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church at Scottsbluff.
She is survived by her daughter Susan Calise of Kimball; son and daughter-in-law Steven and Jan Adams of Chandler, Ariz.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Her parents, husband, son-in-law, brother Alexander Meston and sister Dorothy Steele preceded her in death.
Memorials are to be made to the family and a designated memorial will be determined at a later date. Jolliffe Funeral Home at Scottsbluff is in charge of the arrangements.
Nathan lee armstrong
Nathan lee armstrong (Moses) of Kimball died Sept. 19 in an automobile accident near Pine Bluffs, Wyo. He was born june 7, 1979 in Grand Forks, N.D.
A memorial service will be at the Kimball Southern Baptist Church on Tues., Sept. 24 at 10 a.m.
As a youngster he attended Cheyenne area schools and Kimball High School where he excelled in wrestling and football. He worked in the oilfields around Kimball and in colorado. His family said he was a friend to all.
He was preceded in death by a grandmother and two uncles.
He is survived by his wife Tonya and daughter Melissa of Arkansas, his mother Karen Armstrong of Campbell, Calif; an aunt and two uncles; a grandmother and two grandfathers; a mother-in-law, two brothers-in-law; and numerous cousins from California.
The family requests that any donations be sent to a trust fund for Nathan's daughter Melissa be sent to c/o Karen Armstrong, 1608 W. Campbell Ave. #280, Campbell, CA 95008.
Philip Schmeltzer
Philip Edward "Ed" Schmeltzer, a longtime Worland, Wyo. resident, died at his home Saturday Sept. 14, 2002 following a brief illness. He is the father of Jan Barp of Kimball. Vigil was at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church in Worland Sept. 18 and Mass of Christian Burial was Sept.19. Burial was at Riverview Memorial gardens cemetery.
He was born on October 29, 1922 in Waubay, SD to John Edward and Mary Della (Englert)
Schmeltzer and was raised in Bowman, ND and Milbank, SD where he learned to work along side his father on the farm.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary Jane (Murdoch); five sons and four daughters; 30 grand children and three great grandchidren and other relatives. One granddaughter preceded him in death.

Lee Rasmussen
Lee Andrew Rasmussen, 56 of Kimball, died unexpectedly on Fri., Sept. 13, 2002 at Bridgeport, Neb. Funeral Services were Sept. 17, 2002 at the Chapel of the Cantrell Funeral Home in Kimball with Rev. Roger Gillming will officiating. Burial was at the Kimball cemetery with Military honors conducted at graveside.
He was born January 5, 1946 in Sidney, to Frank and Kathryn (Petersen) Rasmussen. He was a life long resident of the area, having moved to Kimball as a small child with his parents. He attended school in Kimball.
He owned and operated a manure hauling business and worked for several different businesses and ranches in the area and for Hoppy's Water Service.
He helped others, asking nothing in return, assisting youth with 4-H projects and volunteering with the Kimball Rodeo Committee. He enjoyed time with family.
He and Cynthia A. Stormberg were married
September 28, 1968 in Kimball.
He is survived by his wife; son Scott Rasmussen and his wife Carrie of Chappel, Neb., and daughter Lisa Buescher and her husband Darin of Grand Island, Neb.; his parents of Kimball; brother Allen Rasmussen and wife Connie of Chadron, Neb., sisters Rita Wagner and husband Wayne of Saratoga, WY and Barb Barker of Kimball; and two granddaughters.

Elizabeth Wigham
Elizabeth "Betty" Wigham, 86 of Kimball died at the Kimball County Manor Sept. 11, 2002. Funeral Services were Saturday at Trinity United Methodist Church in Kimball with the Rev. Roger Gillming officiating. Burial was at the Kimball cemetery.
She was born on March 27, 1916 in Lawton, Okla. To Arthur H. and Ferrol Elizabeth (Cline) Joens. She attended and graduated from high school in Duncan, Okla. She attended art school and was an accomplished artist. She and H. L. "Wig" Wigham were married
in Duncan on February 24, 1939.
During WW II she worked as a telephone operator. The couple lived several places and moved from Billings, Montana to Kimball in 1959. She worked for a number of years at Western Office Supply. She also worked for many years as a secretary for the Kimball Public Schools in the West building.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church of Kimball and of the Eastern Star. When her daughters were young Betty taught Sunday School classes. She and Wig enjoyed camping, fishing, and golf.
She is survived by her husband, daughters Cinda Lou and her husband Dave Schwindt of Kimball and Sandy and her husband Pat Miller of Olathe, Kansas. One brother Tommy A. Joens of Tuscon, Arizona and a sister Lou Ann James of Caldwell, Idaho; three grandchildren; six great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Thelma Sharp and a grandson.
