Donald Elznic Sr.

Donald J. Elznic Sr., 72, of Geneva, died Thursday, July 27, 2000 in Geneva.

He was born May 3, 1928 at Geneva to James and Agnes (Kral) Elznic. He was a Korean War Veteran.

He is survived by his sons, Donald J. Elznic Jr., of Salem, Ore. and Tim and Joe Elznic of Geneva; daughter, Karla (Frank) Slezak of Grand Island; brother, Gary Elznic of Geneva; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Aug. 1, at 2 p.m. at Farmer and Son Funeral Home in Geneva with Kim Dunker officiating. Visitation will begin at noon on Monday, July 31, at Farmer and Son Funeral Home in Geneva. Graveside services will be held at the Geneva Public cemetery in Geneva. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Marie Prell

Marie L. Prell, 84, of Osceola died on Friday, Sept. 22, 2000, at the Annie Jeffrey Health Center in Osceola.

She was born on Oct. 21, 1915, in York, the daughter of William and Emma Maronde Strobel.

She graduated from York High School and was married to Neal Prell on Nov. 2, 1939, in Omaha. She belonged to the Stoner Club, Garden Club, Shelby Project Club and card clubs, and was affiliated with the Lutheran Church.

She is survived by two sons, Dennis Prell of Omaha and Richard (Ruth) Prell of Fremont; three daughters, Karen (Bill) Simms of Fremont, Mary Aksamit of San Jose, Calif., and Deanna (Zane) Lemon of Denton, Texas; and 11 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Neal, on June 25, 1983; four brothers and four sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 10: 30 a.m., on Tuesday, Sept. 26, in St. Paul Lutheran Church, Osceola, with Pastor Clifford Hoper officiating. Visitation will be Monday, Sept. 25, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Kepner-Roberts Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Shelby cemetery, Shelby.

Brian Hedrick

Brian Kent Hedrick, 42, of Omaha died Friday, Sept. 22, 2000, in Omaha.

He was born on April 26, 1958, in Seward, the son of Boyd and Janet Hedrick of York.

He is survived by his wife, Michele; two daughters, Erica and Lauren, all of Omaha; his parents; a brother, Brad (Sheryl) Hedrick of Lincoln; many nieces, nephews and other family members.

Funeral services will be held at King of Kings Lutheran Church, 11615 I St., Omaha, on Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, at 10: 30 a.m. Visitation will be at the Crosby Burket Swanson Golden Colonial Chapel, 11902 West Center Rd., Omaha, on Monday, Sept. 25, from 5 to 8 p.m. Graveside services will be Tuesday, Sept. 26, at 4 p.m., at the Utica cemetery, Utica.

Memorials may be sent to the King of Kings Lutheran Church or the American Heart Association.

Laverne Inhelder

Memorial services will be held at Stockholm Lutheran Church in Stockholm, on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 10 a.m., for Laverne Dimps Swanson Inhelder of Denver, Colo.

She is survived by a son, Jim (Betty) Inhelder, and daughter, Jan Inhelder Carter; three grandchildren, Andy (Beth) Inhelder, Nick Inhelder and Kim Carter; and two great-grandchildren, Kelsey Inhelder and Tess Inhelder, all of Denver, Colo.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Harry and Minnie Swanson; sisters, Olive Hulkene and Minette Nelson; and brother, Wallace Swanson.

Gordon Dickerson

Memorial services were held at Eastridge Presbyterian Church in Lincoln on Thursday, Aug. 31, 2000, for Dr. Gordon Edwin Dickerson who died Sunday, Aug. 27, in Lincoln.

He is survived by his wife, Myra of Lincoln; sons, Alfred (Pat) Dickerson of Soquel, Calif.; Malcolm (Vera) Dickerson of Eldon, Mo.; Dave (Linda) Dickerson of York, and Dean (Susan) Dickerson of Davis, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He gave a lifetime of service to international agricultural genetics research, being involved with the Agriculture Research Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture. He was a professor emeritus of animal science at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and was involved with the Meat Animal Research Center of Clay Center. He received Superior Service and Science Hall of Fame Awards from the Agricultural Research Service, USDA; Animal Breeding and Genetics and Morrison Awards, American Society of Animal Science; and the Gamma Sigma Delta International Award for Distinguished Service to Agriculture.

He was an elder and deacon of Eastridge Presbyterian Church in Lincoln, a member of the Capital City Kiwanis, Lincoln Mayor's Committee of International Friendship, and the Lincoln Chapter of the United Nations Association.

Marion Bussard

Fairmont resident, 87

Marion Bussard, 87, of Fairmont, formerly of Lushton, died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000, at Fairmont.

She was born Jan. 1, 1913, at Lushton to Howard P. and Cora (Wright) Dearing. She was formerly a member of the E.U.B. Church at Lushton for many years before joining the East Avenue United Methodist Church in York. She was the Lushton reporter for the York News-Times for many years and was on the York County Election Board.

On July 6, 1937, she was married to Forrest Bussard at Angus.

She is survived by two brothers, David (Betty) Dearing of Bremerton, Wash., and John (Virginia) Dearing of Minneapolis, Minn.; several nieces, nephews and cousins including, Judy (Warren) Rathje of York, Sue (Jerry) Volkmer of McCool, and Peggy (Don) Matzner of York.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son, two brothers and five sisters.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m., Monday, Oct. 16, at the Metz Chapel in York with the Rev. Jo Harper officiating. Burial will be in the Lushton cemetery near Lushton. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m., Sunday. Memorials may be directed to the Fairview Manor at Fairmont. Metz Mortuary in York is in charge of arrangements.

Jerome "Jerry" Bair

South Dakota resident, 61

Jerome D. "Jerry" Bair, 61, of Lake City, S.D., died Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2000, at the Marshall County Healthcare Center in Britton. S.D.

He was born July 5, 1939, at Akron, Ohio, to Donald William and Lois (Morrow) Bair. At the age of five, he moved with his family to York where he attended school and lived until 1962. At that time, he moved to Redfield, S.D.

On Aug. 24, 1963, he married Helen Frericks at Redfield, S.D. They lived in Redfield where he flew as a crop duster until 1966. At that time, they moved to Britton, S.D., where he served as manager of the airport. He also owned and operated Marshall Aviation. He later merged with his father's flight service and formed Don-Mar Aviation. From 1977 to 1998, Jerry and Helen lived in York. He was recognized for outstanding service with the Nebraska Aviation Trades Association in 1999.

In 1998 they moved to Clear Lake near Lake City, S.D., and built their retirement home.

Jerry was a second generation crop duster, having learned the trade from his father. He continued by passing it on to a third generation by teaching his son, Craig, the profession.

He is survived by his wife, Helen of Lake City, S.D.; three sons, Jeff (Lynn) Bair of Greenville, N.C., Brian Bair of Stevensons Ranch, Calif., Craig (Teresa) Bair of York; one daughter, Teresa Bair (and fiance John Carel) of Beatrice; a brother, Paul Hess of Solebury, Pa.; one sister, Linda (Cliff) Baker of Fairport, N.Y.; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a step-mother.

His memorial service was held at 10 a.m., Friday, Nov. 3, at the Britton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tim Vorlage officiating. Price Funeral Chapel of Britton was in charge of the arrangements.

Deloris Orth

Tipton, Iowa, resident, 59

Deloris Jean (Newsome) Orth, 59, of Tipton, Iowa, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001 at University Hospitals after a long illness.

She was born April 13, 1942 at Ellsworth, Kan., to Cecil and Gertrude Newsome.

Survivors include her husband, Norman of Tipton; daughters, Kalin and family of Colorado and Gayla and family of Iowa; sons, Galin and family of Iowa and Bill and family of Iowa; mother, Gertrude Newsome of Great Bend, Kan.; sisters, Barbara Randolph and family of Salina, Kan., and Nancy Schukman of Casper, Wyo.; brother, Harold Newsome and family of York. She was preceded in death by her father; a brother, Norman; two sons, Brad and Todd Campbell; one daughter, Denise Katherine Orth; and a grandson, Cody Orth.

Services are 2: 30 p.m. Wednesday at the Fry Funeral Home in Tipton with the Rev. Eugene Benda officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill cemetery in Mechanicsville, Iowa. Visitation is today (Tuesday) from 4-7 p.m.

LeRoy Carstens

York resident, 57

LeRoy M. Carstens, 57, of York died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at York. He was born Aug. 18, 1943, in Norfolk to Hans and Irene (Myers) Carstens.

He was a 1961 graduate of Winside High School, Winside. He married Gloria Enright on April 25, 1971, in York. He was a long-time employee of Gambles in Norfolk, McCook and York, serving in York as assistant manager.

He also served the City of York as custodial supervisor for eight years. LeRoy was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in York, York Elks Lodge and the York Boosters Club.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria of York; sons, Jon of Lincoln and Steve of York; four brothers, Richard (June) Carstens and George (Barb) Carstens, both of Hoskins, Neb., Jack (Annette) Carstens of Lincoln, Dean (Sharon) Carstens of Norfolk; two sisters, Mary (Bruce) Otto and Nancy (Clark) Bauer of Lincoln.

Preceding him in death were his parents and one sister, Ethel (Mrs. Harry) Dohren.

Funeral services will be held at 10: 30 a.m. Thursday at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 14th and Delaware, in York. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery, York. Memorials may be sent in care of the family.

Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Metz Mortuary in York which is in charge of arrangements.

Anna Reetz

York resident, 99

Anna L. Reetz, 99, of York died on Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 24, 2001, at York General Hospital in York.

She was born on March 27, 1901, at Papillion to Frank and Katheryn (Haug) Zweibel.

She was united in marriage to William Carl Reetz on Oct. 12, 1924, at Thayer, and the couple farmed near Waco and northwest of York for many years prior to retiring and moving to York in 1972. Mr. Reetz died on Oct. 22, 1982.

Anna was a longtime member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church at York and also had been a longtime member of Zion Lutheran Church near Thayer and Peace Lutheran Church at Waco.

Survivors include four children: Elvin (Venecia) Reetz of Benedict, Melvin (JoAnn) Reetz of York, Delores Carlson of Stromsburg and Raymond (Shirley) Reetz of York; 13 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.

Anna was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one brother (Martin), five sisters (Lena, Sophie, Mabel, Katherine, and infant Marie), one son in infancy, one great-great-grandson, and one son-in-law (Edsel Carlson).

Due to construction at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, funeral services will be held at Faith Lutheran Church (12th and Ohio Ave.) in York at 10 a.m., on Monday, Jan. 29, with Pastor Arthur Brinkmeyer officiating. Interment will be at Zion Lutheran cemetery near Thayer. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m., on Friday, at the Lewis Funeral Chapel in York. Memorials may be directed to Emmanuel Lutheran Church at York. Lewis Funeral Chapel of York is in charge of arrangements.

Freda Mae Volz

York resident, 100

Freda Mae Volz, 100, of York died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, in Henderson.

She was born on May 22, 1900, at Sutton to George and Anna (Reisbeck) Alt.

Freda was married on July 25, 1927, in York to John Volz. John died in March of 1971. She was a member of the East Avenue United Methodist Church in York, the Peace Circle and WSCS.

Survivors include her brother, Ray and Vada Alt of Globe, Ariz., and her sister-in-law, Mina Alt of Akron, Colo. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews and special friends, Delbert and Leona Apetz and Dixie and Jerry Apetz, all of York.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 10, at 10 a.m. at the East Avenue United Methodist Church in York with the Rev. Jo Harper officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood cemetery at York.

William Sutter

York resident, 79

William D. Sutter, 79, longtime York businessman, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at York.

He was born at Liberty on Dec. 14, 1921, to William W. and Enna (Mount) Sutter.

Bill was a 1939 graduate of the Barnston High School and later he attended York College. He was married to Doris A. Thompson on Sept. 3, 1941, at Beatrice. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a Radioman First Class. Bill owned and operated the Sutter Appliance Store in York from 1950-1990. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the American Legion Bolton Post No. 19 where he was a past Post Commander. For the last 10 years, Bill worked at The Hearthstone in York.

He is survived by his wife, Doris of York; three sons, William D. Jr. (Peggy) Sutter of York, Robert J. (Gloria) Sutter of Columbia, Mo., and David A. (Rebecca) Sutter of Midland, Texas. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and his brother, Merle Sutter of Liberty.

Preceding him in death were his parents; brother Marvin; and sister Florence.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of York with the Rev. Harry Brown officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood cemetery at York. Memorials may be directed to The Hearthstone at York.

Metz Mortuary of York is in charge of arrangements.
