Lillie Ochsner, 95, of York, died Monday, July 10, 2000 in York. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, July 14, at the East Avenue United Methodist Church in York.

Frances M. Leinberger

Frances M. Leinberger, 83, of Crete, formerly of Lincoln, died June 7, 2000. A Rosary prayer service will be at 7: 30 p.m., Friday, June 9, at the funeral home. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 10, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Utica with Father Maurice Current officiating.

Verlin L. Olson

Verlin L. Olson, 60, of York, died Thursday, June 8, 2000 in York. Survivors include his wife, Charlene. Services are pending at Metz Mortuary in York.

Robert E. Dahlberg

Robert E. Dahlberg, 81, of Lincoln, Calif., formerly of Polk, died at his home on June 21. Private services are being held.

John J. Quiring

John J. Quiring, 88, of Henderson, died June 22, 2000 at his home in Henderson. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., on Monday, June 26, at the Mennonite Brethren Church in Henderson.

Walter Winston St. John

Walter Winston St, John, 90, formerly of York, died July 16, 2000.

He was born on a farm near Charleston on Feb. 1, 1910. At the age of eight his family moved to a farm northeast of Bradshaw. He graduated from Bradshaw High School in 1927.

He married Lois Rust of Bradshaw in August of 1933. He lived in Greeley, Colo., from 1940 until 1942 and from 1944 to 1956. He was divorced in 1949. From 1957 to 1994, he lived in York and practiced as a Public Accountant. He resided in a nursing home in Seattle, Wash., from 1994 to 2000.

He is survived by two sons, Garry of Seattle, Wash. and John of Medford, Ore.

Robert G. Myers

Robert G. Myers, 89, of York, formerly of Benedict, died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000 in York. Services are pending at Metz Mortuary in York.

Lloyd W. Mart

Hutchinson, Kan. resident, 74

Lloyd W. Mart, 74, of Hutchinson, Kan., died Oct. 2, 2000, at Hutchinson Hospital.

He was born May 5, 1926, at Lushton, the son of Walter R. and Gladys P. Gibbons Mart. He attended high school at Lushton. A Hutchinson resident since 1955, moving from York, he was a press operator mechanic at Cargill Salt, retiring in 1991 after 33 years of service.

He belonged to Tenth Avenue United Methodist Church, and was a church historian. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific.

On Dec. 27, 1947, he married Anne K. O'Neill at Grand Island.

Survivors include his wife; five sons, Wendel of Wichita, Kan., Robert of Parsons, Kan., Alan and John of Hutchinson, and Warren of Reno, Nev.; two daughters, Sheila Young and Janice Towle, both of Hutchinson, Kan.; two brothers, Forrest of York and Ralph of Fresno, Calif.; two sisters, Evelyn Rayer of Grand Island and Eunice Whitmore of York; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two grandsons.

Funeral services were held at 10: 30 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 5, at Tenth Avenue United Methodist Church in Hutchinson, with the Rev. Alan D. Stambaugh officiating. Burial was at the Fairlawn Burial Park in Hutchinson.

Memorials may be sent to the church memorial van fund, in care of the Elliott Mortuary in Hutchinson.

Dr. John Barkman

Dr. John Reimer Barkman, 101, of Henderson died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000, at Henderson.

He was born Aug. 16, 1899, to Peter T. and Katherine (Reimer) Barkman. He was a retired minister and teacher and was a member of Faith Evangelical Bible Church in Henderson. He was the founder and director of Grace Children's Home and founder and director of Grace Mission, both of Henderson. He was also a founding father and board member of Grace University in Omaha.

On Aug. 21, 1920, he was married to Anna Friesen at Steinbach, Manitoba, Canada.

He is survived by one son, Paul (Frieda) Barkman of Twenty-nine Palms, Calif.; one daughter, Elinor (Reuben) Goertz of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two foster daughters, Mary Ann (Harold) Andres of Henderson and Erika (Alfred) Penner of Dryden, Ontario, Canada.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Anna; and one daughter, Verda Helena Prieb.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 13, at Faith Evangelical Bible Church in Henderson with the Rev. Thom Justice officiating. Burial will be in the Faith Evangelical Bible cemetery. Visitation begins at noon on Tuesday, Sept. 12, at Metz Mortuary in Henderson, which is in charge of arrangements.

Bobbie Cobb

Bobbie Blaine Cobb, 70, died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2000, at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center in Lincoln.

He was born May 3, 1930, in Max to Floyd and Edna (Thomas) Cobb. He graduated from Stratton High School in 1947.

On Dec. 21, 1947, he married Eldred R. Carpenter in Oskaloosa, Iowa. He was employed as a postal clerk for the U.S. Postal Service at Stratton from June 1, 1948, until his retirement on May 2, 1996. He attended the Christian Union Church in Stratton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Lyle and Paul Cobb; and an infant sister, Pauline.

Survivors include his wife, Eldred of Stratton; three sons, Norm (Glenna) Cobb of York, Dallas (Diane) Cobb of McCook and Wes (Dixie) Cobb of Lincoln; one daughter, Lori (Dick) Golding of Brush, Colo.; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services were held Thursday, Sept. 28, at 2 p.m. at the Christian Union Church in Stratton with the Rev. Robert Sander officiating. Interment was at Rose Hill cemetery in Stratton. Memorials are being accepted in his name. Forch Funeral Chapel in Stratton is in charge of arrangements.

Gesine M. Opfer

Geneva resident, 89

Gesine M. Opfer, 89, of Geneva died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2000, in Geneva.

She was born on April 18, 1911, at Rosemont to Henry and Martha (Rose) Muchow. She was the widow of Earl Luethke and Eldon Opfer.

Survivors include her son, Elden (Donna) Luethke of Fairmont; half-brother, Clarence Muchow of Albuquerque, N.M.; step-son, Gary Opfer of Sutton; step-daughters, Bonnie (Pat) Burns of Lincoln and Paula Hafer of Lincoln; two grandchildren; seven step-grandsons; one step-granddaughter; and one step-great-granddaughter.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 11, at 2 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Geneva. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m., Tuesday, at the Farmer and Son Funeral Home, Geneva. Memorials may be sent in care of the family. Graveside services will be held at Fairmont Public cemetery in Fairmont. Pastor Darren Green will officiate.

Geneva M. Nelson

York resident, 69
Geneva M. Nelson, 69, of York died at York General Hospital in York on Thursday morning, Aug. 1, 2002.

Geneva was born on Oct. 21, 1932, at Muscatine, Iowa, to Oscar and Blanche (Williams) Foran. She grew up in the Marshalltown, Iowa area, and had been a resident of York since 1979.

She was united in marriage to Leo Dean Nelson on Nov. 21, 1951, at Iowa City, Iowa. While in York, Geneva worked as a Security Guard for the Nebraska Center for Women for 12 years prior to her retirement in 1995.

Geneva was a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses, and attended the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness in York. She enjoyed collecting knickknacks, working jigsaw puzzles, and science fiction.

Survivors include four sons: Eldon Nelson of York, Donald Nelson of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Vaughan Nelson of York, and Arnold Nelson of York; one daughter, Carla M. Nelson of York; four grandsons: Shane Nelson, Kevin Nelson-Wells, Daniel Ayala, and Matthew Everson; three granddaughters: Keeya Nelson, Freadom Nelson, and Ashely Nelson; one great-grandson belonging to Keeya Nelson; three sisters: Marceda Hartman of Irvin, Texas, Susan (and her husband, Keith) Witt of Marshalltown, Iowa, and Lorraine Fielding of El Segundo, Calif.; nieces and nephews. Geneva was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, James Foran.

Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness in York at a time to be announced in a future edition. As the body was cremated, there will be no viewing or visitation. Memorials may be made in care of the family. Lewis Funeral Chapel of York is in charge of arrangements.

John T. Thiessen

Henderson resident, 94
John T. Thiessen, 94, of Henderson died Wednesday, July, 10, 2002, at Henderson.

He was born in Janzen, Neb., on Feb. 18, 1908, to Jacob and Katharina (Thiessen) Thiessen. His family moved to Madrid, Neb., when he was ten years old, where as a young man he was very involved with the music program of his church including singing first tenor in a men's quartet.

On June 14, 1938, he was united in marriage to Elsie Peters of Langham, Saskatchewan, Canada. This union was blessed with two sons, Eldon and Harvey. John was a farmer in Mountain Lake, Minn., and in the Henderson area until 1967, when he retired in York. After retiring from the farm John continued to work at various part time jobs including the York Armory until their move to Henderson in 1982. John has been an active member of Faith Evangelical Bible Church of Henderson.

He is survived by his wife, Elsie, of Henderson; two sons, Eldon and wife Anita of Topeka, Kan., Harvey and wife Donna of Bradshaw; four grandchildren, Michelle (Thiessen) Goertzen of Grand Island, Stuart Thiessen of Des Moines, Iowa, Lamonica (Thiessen) Gruen of Topeka, Kan., and Tyler Thiessen of York; and four great-grandsons, Daniel and Stephen Thiessen and Josiah and Matthias Gruen. Preceding him in death were his parents; three brothers, David, Peter, and Jacob; and four sisters, Helena, Katie, Lena, and Mary.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, July 13, 2002, at 10: 30 a.m. at the Faith Evangelical Bible Church in Henderson. Private family interment in the church cemetery will be held prior to memorial services. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Friday with the family greeting friend and neighbors from 7 to 9 p.m., Friday evening. Memorials may be given to Grace Mission of Henderson or The Deaf Ministry of First Federated Church in Des Moines, Iowa.

Metz Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Robert James Pogue

Texas resident, 79
Robert James Pogue, 79, died Jan. 16, 2002, in Houston, Texas.

He was born Feb. 13, 1922, at York to Wesley Berryhill Pogue and Ida Ethel Barber Pogue. He attended Hackberry School, District 3, Polk County, and graduated from Gresham High School in 1939 as class valedictorian.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in September 1941 and served in World War II and the Korean War with many commendations. He was in the invasion of North Africa and then in the Asiatic Pacific Theater of Operations.

After retiring from the Navy as CPO he worked for Global Marine Company for 20 years.

He is survived by his sister, Mildred M. (Mark F.) Gardner of Lincoln; one niece, Margaret Ziegler of North Platte; one nephew, Dr. John Gardner of Terre Haute, Ind.; two grea- nieces and one great-nephew, all of North Platte; cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services were held in Houston on Jan. 20, with burial with full military honors at Houston National cemetery on Jan. 22.

Anna E. Friesen

Henderson resident, 91
Anna E. Friesen, 91, of Henderson died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, at Aurora.

She was born Aug. 25, 1910, near Henderson to Henry E. and Aganetha (Brucks) Mierau. Anna was a member of the Bethesda Mennonite Church of Henderson, Circle 3 and the Garden Club. She was married to Theadore "Ted" Friesen at Henderson on Feb. 23, 1930.

Survivors include her two sons: Myron Friesen and Blaine and Karren Friesen, all of Henderson. Grandchildren are Lori and Luke Jacobsen of Marquette, Matthew and Dellene Friesen of Henderson, Calvin and Brenda Friesen of Henderson, James and Jeanette Friesen of Henderson, Gayle and Rick Schwenk of Henderson, Michelle and John Kroeker of Lincoln, Dawn and John Pankratz of Overland Park, Kan., and Claire and Matthew Thomas of Lincoln; 19 great-grandchildren; sisters, Helen Pankratz, Hulda Dick and Martha Friesen, all of Henderson, and Thelma Fagler of Lincoln. Also surviving are her sisters-in-law, LeVina Mierau and Phyllis and Larry Regehr of Buena Park, Calif., and brother-in-law, Jake Rempel of Henderson.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, infant daughter, daughter-in-law, four brothers and four sisters.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Jan. 24, at 10 a.m. at the Bethesda Mennonite Church in Henderson with the Rev. Weldon Martens. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Memorials may be suggested to the Bethesda Radio Broadcast. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Metz Mortuary in Henderson.

Eugene Slaughter

York resident, 75
Eugene Lauren Slaughter, 75, of York died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at York.

He was born Nov. 6, 1926, at Horton, Kan., to Aaron L. and Ila M. (Williamson) Slaughter. His elementary education began in Scandia, Kan., and after his parents moved to Concordia, Kan., he attended Concordia High School, graduating in 1944. He was a World War II veteran, which took him to the Pacific Theater, mainly in the Philippines and on the islands of Iwo Jima and Guam. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 5, 1946.

After returning from the war, he went to Telegraphy School in Kansas City and then worked as an agent-operator for the C.B.&Q.; Railroad at Wymore, Neb. After completing his training there he was sent to Concordia, Kan., as an Extra-Board and then to several areas in southern Nebraska before bidding in his permanent position at Waco and Utica. He retired on April 15, 1988, after 42 years of service.

On April 20, 1952, he was united in marriage to Evelyn Schmuecker at Lincoln. In his spare time he enjoyed camping, fishing, reading, music and working on radios and clocks. The railroad and cars were the joys of his life.

He is survived by his wife Evelyn of York; one brother, Art Slaughter, and one sister, Elaine Johnston, both of Concordia, Kan.; and cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and grand-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10: 30 a.m. Wednesday at the Arbor Drive Baptist Church in York with the Rev. Keith Bateman officiating. Graveside services will then be held at 2: 30 p.m. at the Evergreen cemetery at Superior, Neb. Memorials may be directed to Parkinson's research or to the church. Visitation begins after 1 p.m. Monday at Metz Mortuary in York.

Evelyn Fjell

Stromsburg resident, 91
Evelyn M. Fjell, 91, of Stromsburg died Friday, July 12, 2002, at Annie Jeffrey Memorial County Health Center in Osceola.

She was born June 27, 1911, to Joseph and Esel (Peterson) Lindblade at Osceola. She attended country school District #48 and graduated from Osceola High School in 1929. After high school, Evelyn lived in York for a period of time.

She was united in marriage to Roy W. Fjell in July of 1941. They moved to the country near Swede Home where they farmed. To this union, four daughters were born. The family later moved one mile west of Stromsburg prior to moving into town. Evelyn worked at the Midwest Covenant Home for many years as a nurse aide until she retired.

She was a member of the Calvary Lutheran Church of Swede Home. She was a volunteer at the senior center and liked handiwork, crossword puzzles, cooking and having coffee with friends.

Survivors include four daughters, Marlene (Don) Eitreim of Brandon, S.D., MarVelle (Larry) Hankel of Gary, Ind., Marcia (Bob) Fedderson of Hornick, Iowa, and Mavis (Dave) Nielson of Waverly; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy (Earl) Jones of Osceola and Delores (Merlin) Simpson of Stromsburg; many nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Roy; two brothers, Raymond Lindblade and LeRoy Lindblade; and two sisters, Glennis Simpson and Irene Ericson.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 16, at 10: 30 a.m. at Calvary Lutheran Church at Swede Home with Pastor Donna Durette officiating. Visitation will be held Monday, July 15, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg. Interment will be in the Swede Home cemetery.
