Glena I. Neumeyer, 76

(Aug. 9) MULLEN - Glena Ione Neumeyer, 76, of Mullen died Thursday, Aug. 6, 2003, at North Platte, Neb. She was born Oct. 28, 1928, at the family homestead north of Seneca. Her parents were William Pearl and Sylvia Cleo (Miller) Edelman.

She attended Jim Gown school, north of Seneca, for six years; and graduated from high school in Seneca in 1946. She was married to Red Neumeyer on March 26, 1949, at Bridgeport. Mr. Neumeyer preceded her in death. The couple followed Franke, Missouri Valley and Teton construction crews for 23 years. In 1969, they moved to Mullen and opened Red's Café. She is survived by two sons, Danny Neumeyer of Glenrock, Wyo. And Billy Neumeyer of Mullen; daughter Toni of Arnold; 13 grandchildren; and10 great-grandchildren. She also is survived by her brother, Bob Edelman of Rapid City, S.D.; and her sister, Bonnetta Kemp of Sargent.

Mrs. Neimeyer's funeral will be at 10 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 10, at Cedarview Cemetery in Mullen.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Saturday at Mullen Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the donor's choice. Mullen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Robert G. Sandstrom, 72

(August 10) CHADRON - Robert Glen Sandstrom, 72, died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at his home.

He was born Nov. 11, 1928, at Sioux Falls, S.D. His parents were Olaff Einar and Tillie (Nelson) Sandstrom. He attended Chadron High School. He worked as a cosmetologist, as a baker, and as a brakeman for the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad.

He married Lorraine Roan in 1946. He was a lifetime member of the Chadron Elks. He is survived by his wife, Lorraine of the home; sons Terry Sandstrom of Morrill, Rob Sandstrom of Chadron and Zac Sandstrom of Kew Garden, N.Y.; daughter Lorna Bucsek of Middleton, Wis.; four grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. He also is survived by sister Biola Borton of Red Cloud, and brother Miles Sandstrom from California.

Mr. Sandstrom's memorial service will be at 1 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 11, at Chamberlain Chapel of Chadron, with Pastor Sharon Harrison officiating. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery at Chadron. A reception will be held at the Chadron Elks Lodge following the service.

Memorial donations may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel, P.O. Box 970, Chadron, NE 69337-0970. Chamberlain Chapel of Chadron is in charge of arrangements.

Bernard T. Burke, 70

(Aug. 10) ALLIANCE - Bernard T. Burke, 70, died Thursday, August 8, 2002, at Box Butte General Hospital. He was born March 15, 1932, at Alliance, Neb., to John and Marie (Nolan) Burke.

He graduated from St. Agnes Academy in 1950. He then attended Regis College in Denver, Colo., and Creighton College at Omaha, Neb. He then enlisted in the Army and served from 1952 through 1954. Bernard was a lifetime rancher who enjoyed rodeos and roping. He married Mary Elizabeth Fitzgerald at the St. Agnes Academy Chapel on Oct. 29, 1955. He was a member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, the Knight's of Columbus, the American Legion, and the Eagles. He is survived by his wife Mary Burke of Alliance; children, Kathie and Jim Phillip of Green River, Wyo., Tom and Gail Burke, Ed and Dixie Burke, and Jim Burke, all of Alliance, and Irene and Terry Heinle of Winner, S.D. He is also survived by his brother and his wife, Jack and Ellouise Burke of Angora, Neb.; sister, Barbara Morrill of Alliance; grandchildren, Nicholas Phillip, Brittany Phillip, Cody Phillip, Christy Burke, Jamie Burke, Lexie Heinle, and Jordyn Heinle; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Mary Eileen Burke, and his brother, George Burke.

Funeral services will be Monday, Aug. 12, at 10 a.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church with Father Bryan Ernest officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Calvary Cemetery. A wake service will be Sunday, Aug. 11 at 7 p.m. at Holy Rosary Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the St. Agnes Academy Foundation or the Alliance Rural Fire and Rescue Unit. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Elna M. (Wightman) Bills, 81

(Aug. 11) ALLIANCE - Elna M. (Wightman) Bills, 81, died Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003, at Good Samaritan Health Care Center. Elna was born April 4, 1922, at Brady, to Mary C. and Wesley B. Wightman.

She grew up on their sand hills ranch northwest of Brady, and graduated from Brady High School in 1939. She was married to Roscoe W. Bills of Lodgepole on April 4, 1941, at Hastings. To this union three children were born, Marylund Ruth, Brent Charles and Charles Oliver. Elna resided at Hastings from 1942 until 1951 when the family moved to Lodgepole where she worked with her husband to create and operate an interior contracting business. In 1966 she and her husband moved to Alliance where she worked as a bookkeeper with several local businesses, retiring in 1986 while working at Good Samaritan Towers. She was a lifetime member of the Methodist Church, and very active in Eastern Star, United Methodist Women and a local business organization for professional women.
She is survived by her husband, Roscoe; daughter, Marylund (Ernest) Henning of Madison, S.D.; sons Brent (Collette) Bills of Federal Way, Wash., and Charles (Eline) Bills of Lincoln; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She also is survived by one brother Byron Wightman of Lexington; sister Melva Norris of Brady; and numerous step-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one great-grandson.

Mrs. Bills funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, 2003, at the United Methodist Church. Internment will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, at Prairie View Cemetery at Lodgepole. Memorials may be sent to the United Methodist Church, Good Samaritan Care Center of Alliance or a charity of the donor's choice.

Edna Mae Gies, 84

(Aug. 12) ALLIANCE - Edna Mae Gies, 84, died Sunday, August 11, 2002, at Good Samaritan Health Care Center in Alliance. She was born Oct. 22, 1917, in North Platte, Neb., to Boyd Elmer and Elizabeth (Sonneman) McGuire.

She married Walter Gies in 1934. To this union three sons were born: Richard, Larry and Jack. Edna has been an Alliance resident for 57 years. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, R.S.V.P., card and birthday clubs. Edna was a charter member of the Eagles Auxiliary No. 136 of Alliance and has been a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliaries for 51 years. She served in several of the local offices and was Madam President 1968-1969. She became Secretary for the Auxiliary in 1972 and maintained that office for 28 years. She was honored by her Auxiliary as Mother of the Year in 1970 and by the Alliance Chamber of Commerce as Secretary-of-the-year in 1985. She was selected for the Nebraska State Auxiliary Hall of Fame in 1995 and chosen as State Auxiliary Mother for 1996-1997. Locally she served on committees for their soup suppers, funeral dinners and banquets, Junior Past Madam President for the Memorial Team. She served several times as District Officer and various state committees including State Membership Aid and State Boys Ranch Adoption Chairman. Her survivors include her sons and wives, Richard and Charla Gies of Custer, S.D., Jack and Aggie Gies of North Platte, daughter-in-law, Rachel Gies of St. Charles, Ill, 10 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Her parents, husband Walter, son Larry, one brother and one sister preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be Thursday, Aug. 15 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Alliance with the Rev. Dr. Stephen T. Roosa officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to the Eagles Club Cancer Fund, P.O. Box N, Alliance, NE 69301. Bates-Gould Funeral Home of Alliance is in charge of arrangements.

Ruth Ann Wilder, 72

(Aug. 12) GERING - Ruth Ann (Burton) Wilder, 72, died Friday, Aug. 8, 2003, at Regional West Medical Center. She was born May 31, 1931, at Plainview, to Levi G. and Elda (Barret) Burton.

She graduated from high school at Alliance and attended Chadron State College for two years. She was married to Elga Wilder on Oct. 21, 1951, at Alliance. She worked as a waitress in Alliance, for El Paso, Texas Toy Sales (Tupperware) for eight years. The family moved from Alliance to Gering the summer of 1963. Ruth worked for Classic Lanes Bowling Alley for six years and the Jack & Jill Grocery at Gering for four years. She was a Tupperware sales lady and manager for many years and a bookkeeper for the Wilder Auto Repair at Scottsbluff until her health forced her to retire. She enjoyed visiting her sons and grandchildren back east. She also helped out on the family business of disassembling old electronic equipment for the metal. She loved to sing in the choir and for special occasions (weddings, etc.) She is survived by her husband, Elga Wilder of Gering; sons Dan Durwoard Wilder of Deep River, Conn., and Donald Edward Wilder of Centerville, Va.; daughter Susan Lynn Wilder of Gering; and grandchildren, Michael, John, Sam, Rahma, Amy, Curtis and Becky. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, brother and infant daughter.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, at Central Church of Christ, with Pastors Victor McPeak and Gerald Parriott officiating. Interment will be at the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials have been established to the family or to donor's choice. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, at Gering Memorial Chapel; and an hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

Samuel E. Taylor, 65

(Aug. 13) ALLIANCE - Samuel E. Taylor, 65, died Saturday, August 11, 2001, at Good Samaritan Health Care Center. He was born Jan. 27, 1936, at Rushville, Nebraska to William C. and Myrtle B. (Lockman) Taylor.

He married Josephine Hawkins June 22, 1974, at Colorado Springs, Colo. He had owned and operated J & S Janitorial Service at Alliance and also had been the Service Manager at Dobson Dodge. After his retirement he had been the caretaker at the Good Samaritan Towers.

He is survived by step-daughters Julie Hubert of Gainesville, Fla. and Denise Shugarts of Denver, Colo. He also is survived by sisters Verna Dennon of Scottsbluff, and Betty Tjardes of Clovis, N.M.; brothers Lloyd E. Taylor of Alliance, James E. Taylor of Atlanta, Texas, and Van Crouter of Banning, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and a step-daughter, Allie Hawkins.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 15, at the Bates-Gould Chapel. Father Vince Parsons will officiate. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Prairie Haven Hospice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Virgil C. Jensen, 81

(Aug. 13) ALLIANCE - Virgil C. Jensen, 81, died Thursday August 9, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital. He was born April 18, 1920, at York to Christ and Marie (Winkler) Jensen.

His family moved to Alliance in 1927. He served in the U.S. Army from Aug. 1942 to Nov. 1945. On Sept. 2, 1950, he married Norma Christensen in Alliance. She passed away in 1979. On Nov. 23, 1985, in Alliance he married Ollie L. (Layman) Paul. Virgil worked in farming and ranching for many years in the Alliance area. He then worked for the Nebraska Department of Roads for 17 years until his retirement. Since then he has worked in maintenance for North Park Apartments and Hardee's Restaurant. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, American Legion, Eagles and the Panhandle County Music Association.

He is survived by his wife, Ollie; daughter Susan Jensen of Alliance; sons and daughters-in-law, Steven and Norene Jensen of Alliance, Randy and Jody Jensen of Bridgeport, Terry and Peggy Jensen of Alliance; step-daughter Debbie and Andy Postell of Alliance; step-son Ron Arcuri of San Francisco, Calif.; grandchildren, Matthew Jensen, Mark Jensen, Crystal Van Galder, Tyler Jensen, Mindy Jensen, Jordan Jensen, Kylee Jensen, Marissa Jensen, Scott and Pam Barber, Michelle Barber, Hope Jensen, Ryan and Jody Postell, Heather and Brad Mathis; and seven great-grandchildren. He also is survived by one sister Lucille Culp of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and numerous nieces and nephews. His parents, first wife Norma, brother Leo and grandson Christopher Jensen preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, August 14, at the United Methodist Church in Alliance. The Reverend Mark Schutt will officiate. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Alliance Volunteer Fire Department. Bates-Gould Funeral Home of Alliance is in charge of arrangements.

James N. Dewing, 74

(Aug. 13) GORDON - James N. Dewing, 74, died Thursday, Aug. 9, at Gordon Memorial Hospital. He was born June 27, 1927 at Rushville. His parents were Ben and Esther (Robinson) Dewing.

He married Myrna Genevieve Hathorn, Jan. 14, 1946, at Marysville, Kan. He owned and operated the Liquor Store at the Highway 20 and 27 intersection at Gordon. He also had worked as a mechanic, and ran the Gordon Golf Course. He had been a member of the Gordon Volunteer Fire Department.

Mr. Dewing's graveside service will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 14, at the Gordon Cemetery, with Rev. Vonne Blessman-Andersen of First Presbyterian Church officiating. Cicmanec-Chamberlain-Pier Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Victor Covalt, 81

(Aug. 13) ALLIANCE- Victor Covalt, 81, of Alliance died Saturday, Aug. 11, 2001, at Good Samaritan Health Care Center. He was born Jan. 27, 1920, on the family homestead south of Alliance in Morrill County to Victor E. and Nellie M. (Landon) Covalt.

He married Betty Douglass Aug. 31, 1940, at Bridgeport. Victor was a third generation Morrill County rancher on Broadwater Road south of Alliance. He was a founder and first president of Box-Mor Telephone Company bringing telephone service to that area. He also was instrumental in the formation of the Gilchrest Fire District in Morrill County. He served as a past board member of the Nebraska Boys Ranch, lifetime member of the American Hereford Association, and the Nebraska Cattlemen. He retired in 1997 due to health reasons and moved into Bridgeport. He and his wife moved into Alliance in June 2001.

His wife preceded him in death on Aug. 4, 2001. He also was preceded in death by a son Paul Jay, granddaughter Stacy, sisters Clara and Mary, and a brother Floyd. He is survived by his daughters and sons-in- law, Wilma E. and Wes Behm of Hill City, S.D., and Alice J. and Ed Dentler of Lakeside; sons, Blaine "Ben" Covalt of Denver, Colo., and Victor E. Covalt, III and his wife Ann of Lincoln; grandchildren, Ellen, Karen, Brandon, Tony, Heather, Maddie, and Emma. He also is survived by one brother Lewis Covalt of Angora; and one sister Stella Weber of Puyallup, Wash.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 14 at the Bates-Gould Chapel in Alliance. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Alliance Rural Fire Department or to the Nebraska Children's Home Society. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Newton "Keith" Payne, 68

(Aug. 13) ALLIANCE - Newton "Keith" Payne, 68, died Sunday, August 11, 2002, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center at North Platte. He was born in Lexington on Nov. 23, 1933, to Newton H. and Lena M. (Wilsey) Payne.

He graduated from Overton High School in 1952 and from Bailey Technical School in St. Louis, Mo., in 1957. He also served in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1956. On Sept. 2, 1956 he married Catherine "Cathy" White at Alliance. They lived in St. Louis for one year following their marriage and then moved back to Alliance in the fall of 1957. They worked on the White ranch until the fall of 1963 then he began working at Neuswanger's until 1970, when he went to work at the Alliance Post Office and worked there until his retirement March 31, 2001. He also farmed southeast of Alliance. He was a member of the First Christian Church, American Legion and a lifetime member of the American Hunting Club. He is survived by his wife, Catherine, sons William K.H. Payne, Clifford and his wife Kim (Bedient) Payne, and Michael Payne all of Alliance; grandchildren, Erica, Zachary, Angie and Nathan. He also is survived by one brother Gary and his wife Darlene Payne of Cowles; nieces and nephews, Gwen and Chris Lecteig of Marion, S.D., Jared Letcher of Alliance, Gary L. "Scooter" Payne II and Tiffany and David Guerrero of Hastings. His parents preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 15, at the Bates-Gould Chapel, with Rev. Walter Cline officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery with military rites. Memorials may be given in care of the family at 5327 Rock Road #2, Alliance, NE 69301. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Donald W. Philpott, 84

(Aug. 14) COCOA, Fla - Donald Walter Philpott, 84, longtime resident of Hay Springs, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2001, at his home in Cocoa, Fla. He was born April 18, 1917, at Strassburger, Neb. His parents were Walter and Cora Philpott.

He graduated from Hay Springs High School in 1934. He was a barber and hairstylist in Hay Springs most of his life, and was an inspector for the Nebraska Department of Health for 19 years. He married Ruth Marie Armbrust on Oct. 29, 1934. The couple moved to Florida in 1992. He attended the Methodist Church, was a lifetime member of the American Legion and VFW, and a 50-year member of the Masons. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Marie of Cocoa, Fla.; daughter Karen Taylor of Cocoa, Fla.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He also is survived by his brother, Vernon Philpott of San Luis Obispo, Calif.

Burial of his ashes will be at a later date in Hays Springs Cemetery. Beckman-Williamson Funeral Home of Viera, Fla., is in change of arrangements.
