Josephine "Jo" Frey

Josephine "Jo" Frey, age 73, of Columbus died Sunday, March 9, 2003 at Beverly Healthcare in Columbus. Funeral services are 10: 30 am Thursday, March 13, 2003 at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church with the Rev. Tom Weisbecker officiating. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 4-8 pm at McKown Funeral Home. There will be a Rosary at 4: 00 & 7: 00 pm, Wednesday also at the funeral home. Visitation will continue on Thursday from 8-10 am at McKown Funeral Home. Burial is in St. Bonaventure Cemetery.

Josephine Frey was born March 6, 1930 in Columbus, Nebraska to Peter and Sophie (Bogus) Teterus. She attended grade school in Tarnov and St. Bonaventure High School. She married William Frey, Jr. on May 9, 1953. Jo lived and worked as a store clerk in McCook, Ogallala, and North Platte, Nebraska before moving back to Columbus. She was a member of St. Bonaventure Catholic Church.

She is Survived by:

Blanche L. Johnson

Blanche L. Johnson, age 92 of Lincoln formerly of Columbus died, Monday; March 10, 2003 in Lincoln, Nebraska. Funeral services are 11: 00 a.m. Friday; March 14, 2003 at the First United Methodist Church in Columbus. The Rev. Gary Main will officiate. Burial will be in the Roselawn Cemetery.

Blanche L. Johnson was born April 5, 1910 in Pierce County to J. Tom and Louise (Schreiner) Lingenfelter. She received her early education in rural Pierce county schools and graduated from Plainview High School in 1927. She attended teachers college at Chadron State and at Wayne State. She received her Bachelors Degree in Education from Wayne State. She was married to Iver C. Johnson December 1, 1934 in Madison County. She lived in Pierce County where she taught at several rural schools in Pierce County until 1957 when they moved to Columbus. While in Columbus she taught for Duncan Public Schools and the Columbus Public School System. Upon her retirement she continued to substitute teach. She was a lifetime member of the Methodist Church, currently a member of the First United Methodist Church in Columbus. She also belonged to the Eastern Star, Parent Teachers Organization, Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, Keystone Group, Womens Society, and the XYZ Club.

Deborah Marie Brunken

Deborah Marie Brunken, age 49, of Columbus, Nebraska died Friday March 7, 2003 at the Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha following a lengthy illness. Funeral Services are 10: 30 am Wednesday, March 12, 2003 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Columbus. Visitation will be from 4-8 pm Tuesday at McKown Funeral Home with a Vigil service at 6: 30 pm, also at the funeral home. Visitation will continue on Wednesday morning from 8-10 am at McKown Funeral Home. Burial will be in All Saints Cemetery.

Deborah Marie Brunken was born February 24, 1954 in Duluth, Minnesota to Robert Clinton and Agnes (Fix) Fix. She graduated from Columbus High School in 1972. Deborah married Timothy Brunken on December 28, 1973 at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Columbus. She lived in Shelby and worked as a C.M.A. for the Good Samaritan Center in Osceola for 18 years. She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Columbus.

Clarence L. Coffin

Clarence L. Coffin, age 97, of Osceola formerly of Shelby, Nebraska died Tuesday March 18, 2003 at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Osceola. Funeral Services are 10: 00 a.m. Thursday March 20, 2003 at the McKown Funeral Home in Columbus with Reverend Gary Main officiating. Burial is in the Circle Mound Cemetery in Rising City, Nebraska. Visitation is 4: 00 p.m. - 8: 00 p.m. Wednesday at McKown Funeral Home and 8: 00 a.m. - 10: 00 a.m. Thursday also at the funeral home.

Clarence L. Coffin was born October 27, 1905 in Germantown, NE to Charles & Ida (Porter) Coffin. He married Rose Thompson on October 27, 1926 in David City. The couple lived and farmed in Butler and Polk County. In 1966 Clarence retired from farming and moved to Shelby where he worked for Shelby Elevator. He enjoyed fishing, playing pool, cards, dancing, and fixing clocks.

Clarence Bruns

Clarence Bruns, 86, of Columbus died Tuesday, March 18 at his home. Services are 10: 00 am Saturday, March 22, 2003 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Columbus with the Rev. Chris Grimmond officiating. Visitation will begin on Friday at 3: 00 pm with a Vigil service at 7: 00 pm at McKown Funeral Home. Visitation continues on Saturday morning from 8-9: 30 am, also at the funeral home. Interment will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery with military honors by Hartman Post # 84 American Legion Honor Guard. Memorials are suggested to the donors choice.

Clarence Dale Bruns was born February 28, 1917 to John and Bertha (Kamm) Bruns. He grew up in Platte Center, Ne and served in the U.S. Army Air Corp 58th Fighter Group during WWII from February 25, 1943 - December 1, 1945. On November 21, 1951 Clarence was united in marriage to Eleanor Czuba in Columbus. The couple made their home in Columbus where he owned and operated his own upholstery business until retiring. Clarence was a member of St. Anthony Church, V.F.W. #3704 and Hartman Post #84 American Legion. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards and spending time with his grandchildren.

His is survived by two sons; David and Larry (Kristi) Bruns, both of Columbus, daughter Mary Ann Bruns of State College, PA, and daughter Genene (Steve) Hurt of Columbus, one sister; Marie Muhle of Columbus, four Grandsons and one step-granddaughter.

He is preceded in death by his wife Eleanor, parents, two sisters; Lorene Allison and Edna Bruns in infancy, and three brothers; Delayne, Andy, and Marvin Bruns.

James J. Vanderloop, Sr.

James J. Vanderloop, Sr., 79, of Columbus died Wednesday, March 26, 2003 at Veterans Hospital in Grand Island. Services are 10: 00 am Saturday, March 29, 2003 at St. Isidore Catholic Church in Columbus with the Reverend Joseph A. Miksch officiating. Visitation will begin at 4: 00 pm Friday at McKown Funeral Home with a Vigil service at 8: 00 pm, also at the funeral home. Visitation will continue Saturday morning from 8: 00 - 9: 30 am at McKown Funeral Home. Interment will be in All Saints Cemetery with military honors by Hartman Post #84 American Legion Honor Guard.

James J. Vanderloop, Sr. was born March 25, 1924 in Cedar Rapids, Nebraska to Harold L. and Cecelia (Schmitz) Vanderloop. He graduated from Cedar Rapids High School in 1941. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during WWII from February 1945 - November 1946 earning the rank of Master Sgt.. As a paratrooper, he jumped into occupied Japan with the occupation forces. Following his discharge, James returned to Cedar Rapids where he farmed until 1947 and then attended Radio & T.V. school in Omaha. On June 6, 1949 he married Mary Ann Haun at Sacred Heart Church in Greeley, Nebraska. The couple lived in Cedar Rapids where he owned and operated Jim's Radio & Electric. In 1951, Jim became Post Master at Cedar Rapids where he served until retiring in 1981. Following retirement, he continued to farm. While living in Cedar Rapids, he was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, Church Trustee, 4th Degree Knights Of Columbus member in Elgin, Holy Name Society, Mayor of Cedar Rapids, Town Board, American Legion, founding member/Secretary Treasurer of the Cedar Rapids Community Development Board, Assistant Fire Chief of the volunteer fire department and secretary/treasurer for the Cedar Valley Board of Reclamation. He served in the Air Force Reserve in Columbus, Grand Island, member of the Grand Island Recovery Unit, and the Air National Guard unit in Lincoln, retiring after 32 years of service. While living in Columbus, he was a member of St. Isidore Catholic Church, V.F.W. #3704, Knights of Columbus, and NARFE.

Lucille M. Webster, age 91 of Columbus died Tuesday; March 18, 2003 at Beverly Health Care in Columbus. Funeral services are 10: 30 am Friday; March 21, 2003 at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Columbus. Visitation will begin at 4: 00 pm on Thursday with a Vigil service at 7: 00 pm, all at McKown Funeral Home. Visitation continues Friday morning from 8-10 am, also at the funeral home. The Rev. Mark Bridgman will officiate. Burial will be in the Ss. Patrick/Joseph Cemetery located in rural Platte Center.

Lucille M. Webster was born August 31, 1911 in Platte Center to Patrick & Magdalena (Pahrman) Langan. She was raised in Platte Center and graduated from St. Joseph School in Platte Center in 1929. She married Roy Kluver. Lucille worked at J.C. Penny for 13 years and at Schweser's for 22 years. Following her first husbands death, she married Carl Webster on November 11, 1976. He passed away in 1992. She was a member of St. Bonaventure Catholic Church.

Helen M. Buggi, age 92, of Columbus, Nebraska died Monday August 26, 2002 at Madonna Rehabilitation Home in Lincoln, Nebraska. Funeral Services are 10: 30 a.m. Friday August 30, 2002 at St. Isidore Catholic Church in Columbus with Reverend Joseph A. Miksch officiating. Burial is in the St. Bonaventure Cemetery in Columbus. Visitation is Thursday from 4: 00 p.m. - 8: 00 p.m. with a 7: 00 p.m. Vigil Service at McKown Funeral Home. Visitation will continue Friday morning from 8: 00 a.m. - 10: 00 a.m. also at the funeral home.

Helen M. Buggi was born April 9, 1910 on the farm west of Columbus to Frank & Mary (Stachura) Buggi. She grew up in Columbus and attended St. Anthony School. She worked at Dale Electronics for 4 years before deciding to stay on the farm to work and take care of her parents. She was a member of St. Isidore Catholic Church. She enjoyed gardening, animals, baking, especially wedding cakes and travelling.
