John Schnitzer

John Schnitzer, age 84, of Nebraska City, NE passed away on Tuesday, January 18, 2011 at BryanLGH East in Lincoln, NE.

John was born icon on February 11, 1926 in the family farm home near Nebr. City; the son of John and Julia Katherine (Gress) Schnitzer. He was united in marriage to Evelyn Mae Bennett on June 30, 1948 at St. Benedict's Church in Nebr. City, NE.

John was a farmer. It was an occupation that he devoted his life to and one that he dearly loved. He was a member of St. Benedict's Catholic Church and the Eagles Aerie #968 of Nebraska City.

John is survived by his children: Kathleen Solie and husband Terry of Bettendorf, IA; Patricia Waters and husband John of Papillion, NE and Elaine Golden and husband John of Nebr. City, NE; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; a sister Viola Peterson of Nebr. City, NE and other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife Evelyn on November 27, 2005; a stillborn son Michael Dean Schnitzer and brothers Alvin Schnitzner and Carl Schnitzer.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 22, 2011 at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Nebr. City with Fr. Mark Cyza celebrating the Mass. Burial will follow in the St. Benedict's Cemetery in Nebr. City.

A Rosary will be recited at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 21, 2011 at St. Benedict's Catholic Church followed by the family receiving friends.

Memorials are suggested to St. Benedict's Catholic Church Building Fund.

Edward H. Hamilton

Age 90 of Nebraska City, NE passed away Monday morning; January 10, 2011 at St. Mary's Hospital in Nebraska City.

He was born icon on July 20, 1920 at Bancroft, IA; the son of Harold and Gertrude (Krapp) Hamilton. He attended school and graduated from the Bancroft High School with the class of 1938. He attended Creighton University in Omaha, NE for two years and played the trumpet with the Creighton Band.

Ed entered the United States Navy during World War II on July 1, 1943 and faithfully and honorably served his country until his discharge on December 13, 1944. He was united in marriage to Mildred Elizabeth Earl on July 1, 1947 in Omaha, NE,

Ed worked at Otoe Foods and Morton House Kitchens in Nebraska City for some 34 years until the plant closed in 1981. He was a long-time member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and a former member of the Eagles. He enjoyed walking and riding his bicycle.

He is survived by his five children: Sandra Keene and husband Lonnie of Union, NE, James Hamilton and wife Sue of Omaha, NE, Robert Hamilton and wife Lori of Omaha, NE, Teresa Swarts and husband Joe of Waverly, NE and Christopher Hamilton of Elmwood, NE: five grandchildren: Marcie Schmieder and husband John, Eric, Zachary and Heidi Hamilton and Alicia Coggins and husband Cliff; seven great-grandchildren: Elise, Evan and Zach Schmieder, James, Courtney and Sadie Coggins and Sean Segelke; brothers: John Hamilton and wife Kathryn of Titonka, IA, Harold Hamilton and wife Eileen of Minneapolis, MN and Martin Hamilton and RoJean West of St. Charles, MO; sisters-in-law: Rachel Hamilton of Bancroft, IA and Evelyn Hamilton of Truman, MN; other family and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife on Aug. 10, 2000; grandson Craig Edward Hamilton; a sister Mary Ann Sudmeier and seven brothers: Robert, George, Joe, Luke, Dennis, Tom and Leo.

Funeral services will be held Saturday morning (Jan. 15) at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Nebr. City, NE. Fr. Michael McCabe will celebrate the Mass and burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery with military honors conducted by the US Navy Funeral Honors Detail.

A Prayer Service will be held Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. at Gude Mortuary in Nebr. City followed by the family receiving friends until 8:30 p.m. Visitation is open after 2:00 p.m. on Friday at the mortuary.

Marilyn J. Saunders

Age 80 of Nebraska City, NE passed away on January 7, 2011 at the Golden Living Center in Nebraska City, NE after a seven year battle with Alzheimer's Disease. She moved to Nebraska City from Ravenna, NE in 2004.

Marilyn was born icon on July 30, 1930 in Smith Center, KS; the daughter of Loyal Clarence and Mary Alice (Eads) Albrecht. She attended school in Smith Center, KS and graduated from the Smith Center High School with the class of 1948. She furthered her education at Ft. Hayes College receiving her teaching degree.

Marilyn taught elementary school children for many years. She also served as a substitute teacher for years after her own children were born. She taught numerous students piano lessons and tap dance. She was a very talented musician and loved playing the piano and organ. She was also very artistic and liked to paint pictures with acrylics and also did sketches with charcoal. She enjoyed socializing with her many friends over coffee for a number of years. Her family and friends were the loves of her life.

She is survived by her four children: Josh Saunders and wife Christina of Akron, CO, Molly Saunders of Nebr. City, NE, Sara Schuller and husband Randy of Chatham, VA and Laura Beth Saunders of Portis, KS; ten grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a sister Doris St. Clair and husband Verlyn of Harlan, KS; other family and many friends.

The family will greet friends Tuesday evening (Jan. 11, 2011) from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City, NE. Graveside funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 am at the Fairview Cemetery at Smith Center, KS with burial to follow.

Memorials may be directed to the family in her memory.

Joan Sinner

Joan L. Sinner, age 78, of Nebr. City, NE passed away on Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011 at the Ambassador in Nebr. City.

Joan was born icon on January 1, 1933 in Beatrice, NE; the daughter of Dale and Louise (Bott) Terry. She attended school in Beatrice and graduated from Beatrice High School with the class of 1950. She was united in marriage to Darrel D. Sinner on March 11, 1956 in Beatrice, NE and to this union two children were born: Jan and Michael.

Joan worked at Morton House Kitchens, for Chris Wurtele Trucking Company, Nebraska Job Service and as a bartender at the Eagles. She was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary #968 of which she was past-president and served as secretary for 10 years. She also belonged to the Bethel United Church of Christ in Nebr. City where she was dearly loved by all the members.

Joan’s greatest joy was her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved children and helped Mike and Angie Sinner at their Daycare. She was a student mentor in Nebraska City and volunteered at the Morton James Library. She traveled to and lived in various places in the United States during her late husband Darrel’s

time in the United States Marines. She also enjoyed traveling after his passing in 2006.

Joan is survived by her children Jan Pummel & husband Kevin; Michael Sinner & wife Angela all of Nebr. City; granddaughters Jennifer Paul & husband Aaron of Kearney, NE; Jamie Petersen & husband Brian of Lincoln, NE and Erica Sinner of Nebr. City; grandsons Joe Pummel & fiancé Chanda Fox of Sidney, IA; Jacob Sinner & wife Robin of Eagle, NE; great-grandchildren Jayden & Alex Paul, Jocelyn & Evan Petersen, Ellah Pummel and Grace Sinner; sister Patricia Queen of Omaha, NE; sisters-in-law: Janice Schweiger and Anna Dice both of Grand Island, NE; brothers-in-law: George Sinner & wife Johnsie; Marvin Sinner & wife Norma; Jimmie Sinner & wife Janet all of Grand Island, NE and Tom Sinner & wife Lupe of Covina, CA; many nieces & nephews; dear friends Helen Ramold and all the past presidents of the Eagles Auxiliary and many other friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Darrel on October 15, 2006; father Dale; mother Louise; brothers Dale Terry, Jr.and Kenny Schwiger; sister and brother-in-law Geraldine & Richard Plebuch and brothers-in-law Russell Queen and Delmer Sinner.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 10, 2011 at Bethel United Church of Christ in Nebr. City with Rev. Rodger Good officiating; burial will follow at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebr. City.

The family will greet friends Sunday afternoon (1/9) from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Gude Mortuary.

Memorials may be given to Bethel United Church of Christ.

Fern F. Short

Fern F. Short, age 87 of Nebraska City passed away on January 4, 2011 at Duff's Friendship Villa in Nebraska City, NE.

Local survivors include her daughter Wilma Deatherage and husband Glenn of Nebraska City.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday morning at 10:30 a.m. at the Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City with Jesi Swearengin officiating. Burial will be in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, MO on Monday; January 10, 2011 at 12:45 p.m.

Willa L. Hartley

Willa L. Hartley, age 81 of Nebr. City, NE passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2010 at BryanLGH East in Lincoln, NE.

Willa Lou (Gump) Hartley was born icon on September 9, 1929 in Nebraska City, NE; the daughter of Ray R. and Stella H. (Witty) Gump. She attended Greggsport Elementary School in Nebraska City and later the Nebraska City High School where she graduated with the class of 1948.

She was united in marriage to Charles William Hartley at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Nebraska City on July 9, 1951 and to this union five children were born: Laurie, Leonard, Kelly, Craig and Todd. Family came first for Willa. Even though there were five children, she always made each one feel "special".

Willa worked at the former LT&T Phone Company in Nebraska City as an Operator for over 25 years.

She was a member of the Legion, V.F.W. and Eagles Auxiliaries, the Friends of the Library and the Nebr. City Alumni Assn. as well as the First Christian Church in Nebr. City. She was an avid gardener and cook and always enjoyed sharing her baked goods with others. She enjoyed nature and feeding the squirrels and birds and was a devoted Nebraska Cornhusker fan enjoying Nebraska football, volleyball and baseball. She was a very gifted artist - especially in drawing/sketching.

She is survived by her children: Laurie Holley and husband Darrell of Henderson, NE; Leonard Hartley of Union, NE; Kelly Beccard and husband Mark of Bellevue, NE; Craig Hartley and wife Debbi of Nebr. City, NE and Todd Hartley of Nebr. City, NE; nine grandchildren: D.W. and Ann Holley of Greeley, NE; Lanny and Amanda Zimmerman Holley of Madison, WI; Jena and Jason Stoll of Nebr. City, NE; Lyndsey Hartley of Nebr. City, NE; Shannan and Tim McGarry of Bellevue, NE; Nicholas Beccard and fiancé Maggie of Sioux City, IA; Jordan and Trisha Beccard of Council Bluffs, IA; Drew Hartley of Lincoln, NE and Paige Hartley of Nebr. City, NE; seven great-grandchildren: Kennady and Canon Holley, Connor and Ashlyn McGarry, Beau Van Eldik, Brayden Hartley and Makenzie Stoll; siblings: Jack Gump and wife Ruth of San Diego, CA, Dorothy Moralle of Bellevue, NE and Doyle Gump and companion Lela Bade of Lincoln, NE; sisters and brothers-in-law: Lois Harris and husband Leonard of Nebr. City, Bob Hartley and wife Patty of Evergreen, CO, Sharlette Wadsworth and husband Jim of Nehawka, NE and Mary Ann Hartley of Omaha, NE; numerous nieces, nephews, other family and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Charles on October 24, 1998, brothers Leonard and Leslie Gump, great-grandson Jonathon Francis Hartley-Ullsperger, her parents and sisters and brothers in law: Betty Hartley, Frank "Buster" Hartley, Jr., Joseph Moralle and Marion Gump.

Services for Willa Hartley will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday; January 3, 2011 at the Wyuka Cemetery in Nebraska City with Rev. Jerry Albright of the First Christian Church officiating. Burial will follow the services.

The family will greet friends on Sunday evening (Jan. 2, 2011) from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City followed by a prayer service at 8:00 p.m.

Memorials may be given to the River Country Nature Center, Nebr. City Fire Museum or the Stella Gump Scholarship Fund given by the Nebr. City Alumni Assn.

Oqual Marie Meyer (Hunker)

Oqual Marie Meyer (Hunker) beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother died Saturday, December 25 in Nebraska City, Nebraska at 84 years of age following a courageous battle with Parkinson disease. Oqual and Merle Meyer were married on August 12, 1947 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Elmwood, Nebraska. As a couple, they worked hand in hand on their family farm.

Oqual is survived by her husband Merle, daughters, Jody LaMontagne (Dave), Bellevue, Marley Neddenriep (Terry), Lincoln, Kris Meyer (Randy), Lincoln; sons, Mark Meyer (Marlene), Nehawka, Steve Meyer (Jodie), Union; grandchildren, Jeff LaMontagne, Chad LaMontagne, Papillion, Tracy Frans, Millard, Jay LaMontagne, Omaha, Kyle Neddenriep, Brownsburg, Indiana, Katie Underwood, Omaha, Tara Lundy, Lincoln, Roxie Rohlfs, Marcie Rohlfs, Caleb Miller, Lincoln, Jenny Schroll, Nehawka, Janelle Fleischman, Elmwood, Sierra Meyer, Plattsmouth and thirteen great-grandchildren.

A full house, a home cooked meal, and lots of laughter made Oqual the happiest. Oqual was passionate about her family, role as a mother, and church activities. She enjoyed her memberships in the American Legion Auxiliary and the Holy Trinity Guild. During her lifetime, Oqual was especially enthusiastic about baking, gardening, square dancing, card playing and shopping.

Oqual was preceeded in death by infant sons David Merle, Daniel Merle, a stillborn daughter, and grandson Anthony Scott Rohlfs.

The family will receive friends and relatives on Monday, December 27 from 5:00 - 7:00 PM with the Rosary following at 7:00 PM at Holy Trinity Church, rural Avoca. The funeral mass will be held at St. Paulinus Catholic Church in Syracuse on Tuesday, December 28 at 10:30 AM. Fr. Michael Stec will celebrate the Mass and burial will follow in the Holy Trinity Cemetery.

Vernon M. Catlett

Vernon M. Catlett, age 90, of Hamburg, IA passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2010 at the Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg, IA.

Vernon was born icon on October 16, 1920 in Hamburg, IA; the son of Victor and Molly (Coffey) Catlett. He attended school in Hamburg and graduated from the Hamburg High School with the Class of 1937. He was united in marriage to Jean E. Neeley on January 4, 1939 at the United Methodist Church in Nebraska City, NE.

Vernon proudly served his country in the United States Marines during WWII. He entered service on June 29, 1944. He was honorably discharged on December 7, 1945. After his military service, Vernon spent his life farming; an occupation he truly loved.

He was a member of the Hubert Woodward American Legion Post 156 of Hamburg, IA and the Williams-Jobe-Gibson American Legion Post 128 of Sidney, IA for over 50 years and served both post in various capacities. He was also involved in various other military organizations including the V.F.W. and 40 et 8. Most recently, he served as the Sergeant at Arms for the Hamburg Post.

He is survived by his children: Marilyn Gilson and husband Jack of San Antonio, TX; Jack Catlett and wife Anne of Garland, TX and Tom Catlett and wife Pam of Plattsmouth, NE; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; special friend Ramona Baldwin and other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife Jean on January 9, 2006, a daughter Patricia Ann Wycoff on May 3, 2003; grandson Michael Gilson on November 3, 1985, siblings: Tom Catlett and Dorothy Jones and his parents.

Graveside Memorials Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010 at Mt. Olive Cemetery in rural Hamburg, IA; inurnment will follow the services. Military services will be conducted by the Hamburg American Legion Post #156 to honor his service to his country.

The family will greet friends from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 17, 2010 at the Rash-Gude Funeral Home in Hamburg, IA.

Memorials may be given to the Mt. Olive Cemetery Assn., the Hamburg Fire or Rescue or the Sidney Rodeo.

Mary L. Hudson

Mary L. Hudson, age 72 of Sidney, IA passed away on Sunday morning; Dec. 12, 2010 at The Ambassador in Sidney, IA.

Mary was born icon on February 15, 1938 in Hamburg, IA; the daughter of Lloyd and Hazel Comstock.

Mary worked at the Overload Company in Omaha, NE and she had also worked at Blue Star Foods in Council Bluffs, IA as well as working various other places.

She is survived by companion and caregiver Ted Johnson of Sidney, IA; children: Robert Lundy of Omaha, NE; Barb Swager and husband Duane of Council Bluffs, IA and Debbie Hecker of Council Bluffs, IA and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; three sisters: Betty, Shirley and Amy and locally one brother Lloyd Comstock, Jr. of Sidney, IA and other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister Jean.

There are no services scheduled.

Ronald M. Ebbens

Age 65 of Hamburg, IA passed away on Monday; Dec. 13, 2010 at the VA Medical Center in Denver, CO.

Ron was born icon on September 10, 1945 in Chicago, IL; the son of Herman and Alice (Martin) Ebbens. He graduated from Morley-Stanwood High School in Morley, MI. After graduating from high school Ron entered the United States Air Force. He proudly served his country from 1963 to 1967, and obtained the rank of Sergeant.

He was self-employed as a contractor in the Hamburg area including owning and operating his own lawn service for over 20 years.

He is survived by two daughters Shawna E. Ebbens of Stanwood, MI and Heather M. Larribas and husband Adam of Colorado Springs, CO; grandchildren Ashley Ebbens and Daxx Larribas; brother Wayne Arendt of Puerto Rico; former wives and dear friends Sandra Ebbens of Rock Port, MO and Florence Selfridge of Stanwood, MI and other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.

Memorial Services will be held graveside at 2:00 p.m. on December 23, 2010 at the Mt. Olive Cemetery near Hamburg, IA; inurnment will follow and complete military services will be conducted by the Hamburg American Legion Post.

Memorials may be given to VA Hospital in Omaha, NE.
