Joan S. Cowan
Joan S. Cowan, 78, of Scottsbluff, died Friday, March 11, 2005, in her home.
As well as being a devoted wife and raising two sons, she worked as a Registered Physical Therapist in the valley for most of her adult life. She was forced to retire due to injury in 1989.
Survivors include her sons, Tom, Jr. and daughter-in-law Debbie of Omaha and Ted of Scottsbluff, and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Arlis Lewis and husband Thomas.
Mom, oh how you will be missed.

Dorothy Jacobs
Dorothy Jacobs, 81, of Scottsbluff, died Saturday, March 12, 2005, at Beverly Healthcare in Scottsbluff. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, March 16, at the Jones Mortuary Chapel in Mitchell, with Pastor D. Jake Roberts officiating. Her remains were cremated at the Jolliffe Funeral Home Crematory in Scottsbluff. Memorials in her name may be made to Prairie Haven Hospice.
Dorothy was born August 12, 1923, at Clearwater, Neb., to Ray and Verna Mae (Rutledge) McCloud. She grew up and received her education in the Rushville and Hay Springs areas, and on February 12, 1940, she married Len Jacobs at Rushville. She and her husband lived in many towns in Nebraska and South Dakota before moving to Mitchell in 1958. They moved to Morrill in 1960, where they owned and operated the Rustic Tavern. After they sold the Rustic, Dorothy continued working there until her retirement in 1985. She continued living in Morrill until 2001, when she moved to Scottsbluff, where she has resided since.
She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Jeni Jacobs of Torrington, Wyo., and Don and Carol Jacobs of Gering; her daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Charles Bybee of Cheyenne, Wyo.; a sister, Lorraine Green of Crawford; grandchildren, Todd and his wife, Marsha McMann, Jamie and her husband, David Dymak, Tony Jacobs, Crystal and her husband, Mark Abrams, Troy Medina, Caleb Jacobs, James Jacobs and Brad Jacobs; six great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson. A daughter-in-law, Rene Betz of Gering and a son-in-law, Keith McMann of Hickman, also survive her.
Her parents, her husband, a son, Tom, a daughter, Sandra McMann, a grandson, Jon McMann, brothers, Lloyd McCloud, Merle McCloud and Loren McCloud, sisters, Mary Lou McKenna and Inez Clark and an infant son preceded her in death.

Cathy Mae Loose Kincaid
Cathy Mae Loose Kincaid, 55, died Friday, March 11, 2005, at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff with friends and family by her side. Cremation was held at Sunset Memorial Park Crematory. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m., Friday, March 18, at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel with Pastor Doug Jones officiating. A memorial has been established to the Cathy Kincaid Memorial Fund, in care of the family. Tributes of sympathy may be left at www.dugankramer.com.
Cathy was born July 28, 1949, in Scottsbluff to Walter and Helen Loose. She attended Scottsbluff schools. She married Dick Romey in December 1965. To this union, Trevor Lee Romey was born.
Her greatest love in life was her two grandchildren, the love of music, country bands, and the love of her Lord, Jesus Christ.
Cathy is survived by her son, Trevor; grandson, Trent Romey (11), granddaughter, Jazmyne (3); mother, Helen Loose of Scottsbluff; brothers, Larry Loose of Scottsbluff, Garry Loose and wife, Gay of Mitchell; nieces, Sarah Loose and Baile of Scottsbluff; and good friend and caregiver, Jane Welsch. Pastor Doug Jones and Debbie Jones were good friends of Cathy.
Her father, Walter Loose, infant nephew, Christopher Loose, Dave and Matilda Loose, Henry and Katie Keller, and her beloved dog, Tasha preceded Cathy in death.

George M. Lacey
RALSTON — George M. Lacey, 81, of Ralston, Neb., died March 12, 2005, at Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 15, 10 a.m., at Ralston United Church of Christ, 7638 Maywood Street, in Ralston. Graveside service will be Tuesday, 2 p.m., Glenwood, Iowa, with full military honors. Memorials can be made to Ralston United Church of Christ or to your favorite charity. Visitation will be on Monday, 5-8 p.m., at the West Center Chapel, 7805 West Center Road, in Omaha.
He is survived by his wife, Janice Lacey; sons and daughters-in-law, Douglas and Barb Lacey of Ralston, Dr. Stuart and Patti Lacey of Lincoln, Dr. Steffan and Cathie Lacey of Norfolk, Dr. Kent and Gayle Lacey of Scottsbluff; eleven grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Dorothy Belle Miller
TORRINGTON, Wyo. — Funeral services for Dorothy Belle Miller, 80, will be held at 2 p.m. on March 17, 2005, at the Colyer Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Ron Liesmann officiating. Burial will follow in the Valley View Cemetery. Dorothy died at Heritage Health Care in Gering, on March 12. A memorial has been established to the Alzheimer’s Unit at Heritage Health Care. Visitation will be on Wednesday from noon until 7 p.m., on Thursday from 9 a.m. until noon, and briefly following the service. Arrangements are under the direction of the Colyer Funeral Home.
She was born June 29, 1924, in Hartford, Ark., the daughter of Harvey and Bennie (Barentine) Webb. Her family moved to the Mitchell area when Dorothy was a small child. She grew up in the Mitchell and Scottsbluff area. She married Lynn Grubbs on November 22, 1947, in Castle Rock, Colo., and they lived in Torrington. Mr. Grubbs died in 1968. She married Joe Miller on September 18, 1971, in Torrington where they lived for several years. After Joe died in 1988, she continued to live in Torrington until 1998 when she moved to Gering. In February of 2002, she entered Heritage Health Care. She loved to raise flowers, especially roses. She had chickens for many years and sold the eggs. She also loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Torrington.
Dorothy is survived by two daughters, Mary Aufdengarten and her husband Donald of Gering and Neida Thornton of Scottsbluff; two sons, James Current of Oakland, Calif., and Dennis Grubbs of Torrington; four brothers, John Webb of Scottsbluff, Harold Webb of Morrill, Utah Webb of Torrington, and Eldon Webb of St. Louis, Mo.; one sister, Edna Cook of Scottsbluff; ten grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren. In addition to her husbands, her parents, four brothers, and three sisters preceded her in death.

Carl H. Reifschneider
BAYARD — Carl H. Reifschneider, 88, of Bayard, died Monday, March 14, 2005, at the Chimney Rock Villa at Bayard. His funeral will be Thursday, March 17, at 10 a.m., at the Hope Congregational Church in Bayard with Pastor Ted Meter officiating. Interment will be in the Bayard Cemetery. A Memorial has been established to the Church. Friends may call at the Church, Wednesday, March 16 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Jolliffe Funeral Home at Bridgeport is in charge of the arrangements. Carl was born December 26, 1916, at rural Melbeta, the son of A. Henry and Amollia (Stricker) Reifschneider. He was raised and educated in the Melbeta, Minatare and Bayard areas. He was united in marriage to Helen R. Amend, Feb. 5, 1938, in Bayard. They farmed in Bayard and Scottsbluff before Carl began employment with B & C Steel. He later worked for Lockwood Graders before returning to farming. He retired from farming in 1974. For the next 8 years he worked seasonally for Simplot as a field man. Carl was actively involved in tractor pulling contests for many years.
He was a member of Hope Congregational Church, Odd Fellows and the American Legion.
Carl is survived by his daughters, Sandra (Harvey) Merkel of Thornton, Colo., Judy (Roger) Jay of Athens, Tenn., Carlene (Bill) Reuter of Scottsbluff; son, Roger Reifschneider of Norfolk, Va.; eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; sisters, Mollie Siegfried of Scottsbluff, Eleanor Jones of Huntley, Wyo.; brothers, Albert (Eldora) Reifschneider of Scottsbluff and Richard (Phyllis) Reifschneider of Bayard; and sister-in-law, Irene Reifschneider of Scottsbluff.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Helen, on July 4, 1998, sisters, Dolly Reese and Marie Levick and brothers, Alex and Henry Reifschneider.

Carl Romick
ALLIANCE — Carl Romick, 84, died Sunday, March 13, 2005, at his home in Alliance. Funeral services will be Thursday, March 17, 2005, at 10 a.m., at the Bates-Gould Chapel. Pastor Beverly Webb will officiate. Burial with military rites will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Prairie Haven Hospice.
Carl was born January 29, 1921, in Melbeta, to David and Blanche (Meyer) Romick.
He served in the United States Army as a Staff Sergeant during World War II.
On June 19, 1971, he married Eleanor M. Stanton in Oral, S.D.
He was a long time area farmer and had also worked at Alliance Tractor and Implement. He was a member of the V.F.W., loved racecars, animals, fishing, and playing cards. He also enjoyed bird and squirrel watching.
He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Romick of Alliance; his children and their spouses, Stanley and Laura Romick of Lodgepole, Ronald and Donna Romick, and Kathy and Richard Meier, all of Alliance; and his step-children and their spouses, Vonda and Tom Rothleutner of Upton,Wyo., and Ivy Kay and Jack Birdsall of Martin, S.D. He is also survived by his sisters, Eva Steffen of Kearney, Wilma Twomley of Oregon, and Phyllis Henkel of Bayard; his brother, Howard Romick of Alliance; six grandchildren, 13 step-grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and 13 step-great grandchildren; his aunt, Hattie Wilson of Colorado; and longtime friend, Richard Roebuck. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, David Romick, Jr., and George Romick, his sister, Mabel Vogel, his granddaughter, Tania Meier, his stepson, Vergean Linton, and an infant daughter.
Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Jacqualine R. Rupp
Jacqualine R. Rupp, 74, of Gering, died Friday, March 11, 2005, at the Heritage Health Care Center in Gering surrounded by her loving family. Her memorial service will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, March 15, at the First Presbyterian Church in Scottsbluff with Reverend Ron Nuss-Warren officiating. A private family inurnment will be held prior to the service. Abiding by her wishes, cremation has taken place at the Jolliffe Funeral Home Crematory in Scottsbluff. Memorials are asked to be made to the Presbyterian Church Mission Fund in Jacqualine’s name. Jones Mortuary in Mitchell has assisted the family with arrangements.
Jacqualine ‘Jacque’ was born on June 25, 1930, in Morrill, to Ben and Bertha (Warner) Fullerton. She attended Morrill Public School, graduating as the Valedictorian of the Class of 1948. She continued her education, graduating from nursing school in 1951, and worked as a Registered Nurse until her retirement in December of 1995. She married Harold Rupp on August 12, 1951, the couple later divorced but they always made the Scottsbluff and Gering areas their home. She was proud of her membership to the First Presbyterian Church, offering back to her Lord membership in bible study groups, women’s organizations, and prayer chains until her ill health forced her to quit. Jacque loved reading, sewing, knitting, and gardening, but she hated to cook. She will be deeply missed by her loving family.
Jacque is survived by her son, Les Rupp and his wife, Sonja of Oak Harbor, Wash.; daughter, Susan Bueno; brother, Charles Fullerton and his wife, Peggy of Chesterfield, Mo.; sister, Shirley Nielsen and her husband, Gene of Denver, Colo.; four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
Her parents, and one niece preceded Jacqualine in death.

Robyn Yancey
Robyn Yancey, 32 of Scottsbluff, died Sunday, March 13, 2005, at Regional West Medical Center at Scottsbluff. Funeral arrangements are pending at the Jolliffe Funeral Home at Scottsbluff.

Reuben Debus
MITCHELL — Reuben William Debus, 75, rural Mitchell, died Friday, March 18, 2005, at Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins, Colo.
Funeral services are pending at Jones Mortuary in Mitchell. A complete obituary will appear in the Tuesday edition.

Barry A. Gallawa
DENVER — Barry A. Gallawa, 59, of Denver, formerly of Scottsbluff, died Wednesday, March 16, 2005, at his residence in Denver.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 21 at Salem Congregational Church in Scottsbluff with Pastor Dale Brown Officiating. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery in Scottsbluff with military honors by the Nebraska National Guard. Visitation will be today, Sunday, March 20 from 12 until 7 p.m. at the Jolliffe Funeral Home and will continue an hour before the service at the church on Monday morning. Online condolences can be offered at sympathy@jolliffefuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Panhandle Humane Society.
Barry was born on September 5, 1945, in Temple, Texas to Adam and Anita (Smith) Gallawa. The family moved to Scottsbluff when Barry was very young, and he received his education in the Scottsbluff Public School system. At age 17, Barry joined the United States Army. He spent tours of duty in Germany and three separate tours in Vietnam. In Vietnam, Barry served with the 196th Light Infantry Brigade, and with the Ninth Infantry Division. He participated in 23 multi-division operations and over 100 air assaults. He was wounded twice for which he received the Purple Heart. Barry achieved a rank of Spec. 4 within the Army. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, National Defense Ribbon, Vietnam Campaign Medal and Vietnam Counter Campaign Medal Phase with two battle stars and the Gold War Medal, along with a Bronze Star and a Silver Star.
Following his honorable discharge on November 4, 1971, Barry married Nancy Freund in Denver, Colo. To this marriage, one son was born, Barry Anthony ‘Tony’ Gallawa. He received his Associates Degree in Arts from the Community College of Denver on May 25, 1978, and had earned enough credits for a Bachelors Degree but never finalized that degree. He had been working at the General Services Administration as general maintenance for the Government in Lakewood, Colo. and had been retired for approximately 10 years at the time of his death.
He enjoyed shooting and had an outstanding collection of weapons. He had a love for dogs, and could often be found enjoying his World Wrestling Federation on television. Barry was an avid history buff, especially the study of American Warfare, WWII Nazi Germany, and ancient civilizations such as the Aztecs, Mayans, Incas and Egyptians. He was a very generous person (almost to a fault), taking everyone he met at face value and was very accepting of everyone. Barry was a joy to be around, and he had many friends in the Denver area. His many friends, and loving family will miss him greatly. Barry fell asleep in his favorite chair when he passed away, just as if he had it planned.
Barry is survived by his son Barry Anthony ‘Tony’ Gallawa and his wife Annette of Denver; grandchildren Eric and Nathan Gallawa; father Adam Gallawa of Scottsbluff; brother Kelly B. Gallawa and his wife Carla of Gering; sister Robin Miller of Scottsbluff; numerous uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews; and his four Rotweiller dogs, Max, DeSoto, Velvet and Diamond.
His mother Minnie Gallawa preceded Barry in death.

Jerry Lee Lewis
Jerry Lee Lewis, age 56, stepped upon the shores of Heaven Wednesday, March 9, 2005. He was born in Scottsbluff, Neb., on November 5, 1948, to Ross and Betty Lewis. Jerry graduated from Gering High School in 1967, and attended Chadron State College.
In 1972, he accepted the Blessed Lord and Savior of his life. Salvation gave him a new life that focused on caring for others. The years that followed were filled with God’s leading, including being the youth pastor and principal of Bible Baptist Church in Chadron, Neb. God then lead him to pastor Calvary Baptist Church in Alliance, Neb., for three years. He knew at this time God was directing him into evangelism. Jerry spent the next two years helping a small church in Parachute, Colo. His love for the Savior and people kept him zealous and faithful to preach the gospel for 23 years. His love for children filled every summer with Vacation Bible Schools. His life verse was 2 Corinthians 4:5 “For we preach not ourselves but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus sake.” He was a servant of the Lord teaching and preaching in churches, and encouraging pastors and their people with the Word of God.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Rhonda, his daughter, Annetta and son-in-law, Matt Johnson who are missionaries in Mexico, his son, Travis and daughter-in-law, Angie, who are missionaries in the Philippines, and his son, Jereme and daughter-in-law, Katie, who serve the Lord at Capitol City Baptist Church. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Makayla, Gideon, Alayna, and Victoria. Other survivors include his mother, Betty Lewis of Scottsbluff, his brother, Dan Lewis of Torrington, Wyo., his sisters, June Voss of Cluster, S.D., Rosemary Marrin of Scottsbluff, and Joanelle Pegg of Englewood, Colo.
He has finished his earthly race, but his life was a testimony to others of God’s sustaining grace. A funeral service was held Wednesday, March 16, 11 a.m., at the Capitol City Baptist Church, Pastor Hank Thompson officiating.
