George Idt, 92, of 230 E. 9th, died Tuesday, August 6, 2002 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.
Services will be Friday, August 9, 2002; 2:00 P.M. at Peace Lutheran Church with Rev. Donald Boeschen officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.
George Idt was born
July 9, 1910 in Sutton, Nebraska to Alexander & Katherine (Bender) Idt. He attended Sutton High School and graduated in 1929. He married Ruth Thurin in Omaha, Nebraska on July 5, 1940. He worked at the Paris Café in Sutton, Schwendt Café in Clay Center, Evans Ice Cream Company in Omaha, Maxon Construction Company, Naval Ammunition Depot and 35 years at Carmichael Construction Company in Hastings, Nebraska. He retired in 1980. He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church.
George Idt was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Hastings resident, Leo D. Dettman, 75, 1011 N. Baltimore, died Wednesday, August 7, 2002 at his home
Memorial service will be Tuesday, August 13, 2002; 10:00 A.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel, Hastings, Nebraska with Rev. Earl Higgins officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska
Leo D. Dettman was born
January 28, 1927 in Shubert, Nebraska to Cecil & Frieda (Orr) Dettman. He served in the United States Army during WWII and the Korean War from April of 1945 to November 29, 1951. On January 17, 1953, he married Alta M. Valentine in Omaha, Nebraska. He worked at the Hastings Naval Ammunition Depot until it closed in 1965 and was transferred to Naval Aviation Facility in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he worked until his 30 year retirement in 1974. He returned to the Hastings area and worked for Pinkerton Security at Mary Lanning Hospital for 20 years, retiring in 1998. He was a member of VFW and American Rifle Association.

Harold W. King
Harold W. King, 74, of 1121 N. Colorado, died Friday, August 9, 2002 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.
Services will be Wednesday, August 14, 2002; 10:30 A.M. at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Sam Rathod officiating. Burial with Military Rites will follow at 3:00 P.M. at Fort McPherson National Cemetery, Maxwell, Nebraska, with Chaplin Norvell Holtmeier officiating.
Harold W. King was born
February 25, 1928 in Hastings, Nebraska to Charles & Helen (Corwin) King Wortman. He also lived in Omaha, Nebraska, Ruskin, Nebraska and Detroit, Michigan as a child. After moving back to Hastings, be worked at Skaggs Grocery Store. He served in the United States Navy during WWII from August 31,1945 to July 20, 1946, taking boot camp in San Diego, California and then at Subic Bay in the Philippines on the LSM 263. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1947. On October 12, 1947, he married Loretta Wilcox. They moved to Seattle, Washington where he worked for Safeway Grocery Store. In 1949, they moved back to Hastings where he was a radio announcer for K.H.A.S a short time. They then moved to Sidney, Nebraska in 1949 and worked at the Sioux Army Depot as supervisor of the Surveillance Work Shop until it closed. He transferred to Cornhusker Ammunition Plant in Grand Island, Nebraska until his early retirement when it closed. He worked a short time at Hastings Animal Research Center, Hastings Regional Center and Siddles Automotive. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Adams County Genealogy Society, American Legion and a fifty year member of First United Methodist Church, all in Hastings, Nebraska.
Harold W. King was preceded in death by his parents, step father, Jesse Wortman.

Former Hastings resident, Wayne A. Cherry, 74, of Austin, Texas, died Saturday, August 10, 2002 at Seton Medical Center, Austin, Texas.
Services will be Friday, August 16, 2002; 10:00 A.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel with Rev. Harold D. Stromer officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.
Wayne A. Cherry was born
March 26, 1928 in Buffalo, Oklahoma to James R. & Blanche (Lytle) Cherry. He attended elementary school in Oklahoma and entered the United States Army on September 4, 1952 serving until October 10, 1954. Through letter writing, he became acquainted with a young woman named Shirley Ann Sidlo. They found themselves to be in love and decided to marry on September 16, 1954. She preceded him in death in May of 1994. After living in Blue Hill, Nebraska and Sapulpa, Oklahoma, they settled in Hastings, Nebraska in 1962. He worked in maintenance for the City of Hastings, retiring at an early age due to health. He remained in Hastings until 1998 when his health started to fail. He then moved to Austin, Texas with his son and daughter-in-law, J.D. & Ellen Blackwell. Due to an unfortunate accident in 1999, he fell and broke his hip and through other complications, lost his leg. After that he lived in a care facility in Temple, Texas while recovering. When he recovered, he moved to a care facility in Austin, Texas. He made many friends everywhere he lived. He enjoyed people, hunting and fishing. He also loved to play the guitar and spent many hours listening to records. He took part in a lot of the center’s activities and won several contests.

Hastings resident, Lola E. Spooner, 57, of 1614 N. Lincoln, died Monday, September 30, 2002 at her home.

December 21, 1944 in Hastings, Nebraska to Lowell J. & Aileen (Guinard) Myers. She married William L. Spooner on May 17, 1960 in Nelson, Nebraska. She moved to Hastings, Nebraska from California in 1976. She was a homemaker.

Paul Vander Laan, 37, of 210 University, died Wednesday, September 25, 2002 at his home.
Memorial services will be Saturday, September 28, 2002; 10:30 A.M. at First St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Sacia Vik officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Woodlawn Cemetery, Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Paul Vander Laan was born
May 18, 1965 in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Dan & Joyce Vander Laan. He graduated from Grand Rapids Christian High School in 1983 and from Calvin College, both in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1987. On July 3, 1993, he married Amy Quist in Omaha, Nebraska. They moved to Hastings, Nebraska from Madison, Indiana in May of 2001. He worked for Cabela’s in Kearney, Nebraska and was a member of First St. Paul’s Lutheran Church where he was a Sunday school teacher.

Services will be Thursday, September 26, 2002; 10:30 A.M. at Faith Lutheran Church, Hastings, Nebraska with Rev. Carl H. Rehwaldt officiating. Burial will follow at 2:00 P.M. in Arcadia Cemetery, Arcadia, Nebraska.
Agnes Martha Striker was born
September 10, 1914 Webster County near Blue Hill, Nebraska to Max & A.Mary (Johnson) Benker. She attended Rosemont School in rural Webster County. She married William Baker December 6, 1936 and they moved to western Nebraska. In 1952, they moved to Arcadia, Nebraska. He preceded her in death on December 7, 1957. She moved from Arcadia, Nebraska to Hastings, Nebraska in 1958. She then married Chester Parker on March 24, 1963 and he preceded her in death on October 3, 1965. She worked at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital for more than 15 years, retiring in 1981. She married Robert Striker on December 10, 1966 and he preceded her in death in May 9, 1995. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church.
Agnes Martha Striker was preceded in death by her parents, three husbands, an infant son, a brother, Carl Benker, a sister, Irene Benker, a nephew, Dallas Benker and a step son.

Dolores M. Tjarks was born
May 21, 1921 in Lowell, Nebraska to Merle & Anna (Lange) Owens. She attended school in Denman, LeRoy and Glenvil, Nebraska. On August 16, 1955, she married Roland R. Tjarks and he preceded her in death on October 3, 1985. She was a sales clerk for Gibsons, Woolworths & J.C. Pennys and also worked at Mode O Day. She was a member of First St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
