Mickey James Boulton, 22 months, of Columbus, Nebraska, died September 12, 2001 at the Columbus Community Hospital. Services will be 10:30 AM, Saturday, September 15, 2001 at Peace Lutheran Church, Columbus, with the Rev. Michael Klatt officiating. Interment will be at Columbus Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Friday, September 14, 2001 at Gass Haney Funeral Home and on Saturday from 9:30 -10:30 AM at the church. A family prayer service will be held at 10:15 AM, Saturday, at the church.
Mickey Boulton was born
November 2, 1999 in Omaha, Nebraska to Michael & Sondra (Becher) Boulton. Mickey was the first baby in Nebraska to receive a successful Thymus implant.

John W. Brokate
John W. Brokate, 68, of Beatrice, Nebraska died Sunday, April 14, 2002 at the Beatrice Hospital in Beatrice.
A graveside service will be held at St. Paul's Cemetery, rural Leigh, NE on Wednesday, April 17, 2002 at 1:30 PM with Rev. Peter Jark-Swain officiating. A memorial service will also be held at the Beatrice State Developmental Center Chapel on Wednesday, May 1, 2002, at 2:30 P.M. with Rev. Larry Ramsey officiating.
Wilhelm John Brokate was born
August 8, 1933 near Creston, NE to John Henry & Melinda (Werner) Brokate. John was baptised at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in rural Leigh, NE on July 17, 1934. John was a resident of the Beatrice State Developmental Center since July of 1943. John enjoyed small group activities, craft-making, painting, swimming, and going out to restaurants to eat. John regularly attended chapel services on campus and attended Senior Club Activities. John also enjoyed being visited by school-aged children, as well as interactions with pets brought by staff members.
Dale D. Awtry
Dale D. Awtry, 77, of Columbus, Nebraska, formerly of Ogallala, Nebraska, died Tuesday, January 15, 2002 at the Columbus Community Hospital.
A memorial service will be on Monday, January 21, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Ogallala with Rev. Eric Wait officiating. Memorials have been established in his memory or to the donor's choice. Interment will be at Fort McPherson National Cemetery at a later date.
Dale Awtry was born
on April 21, 1924 at Stockville, NE., to Oliver and Lydia (Gifford) Awtry. He attended school at Stockville and was a member of the Stockville High School class of 1943. Dale served in the US Army from 1943 to 1945 with the 208th Engineering Construction Battalion. He saw action in Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland, and Central Europe. Dale was wounded in action and was awarded the Purple Heart and Good Conduct Medal.
Dale married Norma Thomsen on April 1, 1946 in Oberlin, KS. After marriage, he enrolled in the electrical department at Milford Trade School, Milford, NE. and graduated in 1947. Dale was employed with several electrical contractors in York, NE, from 1947 to 1951. Dale began work for Consumers Public Power District in 1951, and worked for Consumers and Nebraska Public Power District for 37 years in a variety of jobs. During this time he and his family lived in Superior, York, and Exeter before moving to Ogallala in 1969. Dale retired from NPPD in 1987.
Dale was active in the church, the Oddfellows, RSVP, Meals on Wheels, and many other volunteer organizations. He loved wood carving and was a member of a woodcarvers club in North Platte. Dale was also an avid golfer. After suffering a stroke in 1998, Dale resided at Indian Hills Manor in Ogallala. He moved to Columbus in 2001 to be near family.

Lydia P. Borchers, 96, of Monroe, Nebraska, died Monday, January 14, 2002 at Beverly Healthcare, Columbus, Nebraska. Services will be held at Gass Haney Funeral Home on Friday, January 18, 2002 at 1:30 PM with Rev. Peter Jark-Swain officiating. Interment will be at the Zion Lutheran Grand Prairie, rural Platte Center, Nebraska.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 17, 2002 from 3:00 PM - 8:00 PM and on Friday, January 18, 2002 from 12:30 PM until service time, all at the funeral home. There will be a family prayer service at 1:15 PM on Friday at the funeral home.
Lydia Borchers was born
February 21, 1905 near Creston, Nebraska to Anthony and Wilhelmina (Minnie) (Gehring) Hassebrook. She attended school in Platte Center, Nebraska. She married Fred J. Borchers on January 8, 1924 at Platte Center. They resided in the Platte Center area until 1935 when they moved to the Genoa, Nebraska area. In 1944 the moved to the Monroe, Nebraska area.
Lydia was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, a charter member of Zion Ladies Aid and the Monroe Wattsville Extention Club. She was a homemaker, enjoyed gardening, flowers and crocheting. She also enjoyed making quilts for the family and world relief.

Services will be held at the Federated Church in Columbus, Nebraska on Thursday, January 24, 2002 at 10:30 AM with Rev. Don Wilson officiating. Private family interment will be at a later date. Visitation will be held at Gass Haney Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 23, 2002 from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM and at Federated Church on Thursday, January 24 from 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 AM Thursday at the church.
Patrick J. Bristol was born
March 1, 1951 to Everett and Jeri (Harrington) Bristol at Valentine, Nebraska. He graduated from Valentine High School. Patrick married Dolores (Wisnieski) Pieper on April 18, 1998. He was a meat department manager at Didier's Grocery Store in Schuyler. He lived in Schuyler and moved to Columbus in 1998. Patrick was a member of the Federated Church. He loved bowling, woodworking and collecting antiques. In the past he had been active in the Boy Scouts.

Elsie Brunken
Elsie L. Brunken, 83, of Columbus, Nebraska died Saturday, July 13, 2002 at Morys Haven Nursing Home in Columbus. Services are Wednesday, July 17, 2002 at 1:30 PM at the First Baptist Church in Columbus with the Rev. Dr. Larry Adams officiating. Interment will follow at the Columbus Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at Gass Haney Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 16, 2002 from 4:00 - 8:00 PM and on Wednesday, July 17 from 12:30 - 1:30 PM at the church. There will be a family prayer service on Wednesday at 1:15 PM at the church.
Elsie Brunken was born
August 17, 1918 in rural Nance County near Fullerton, Nebraska to Frank and Sadie (Hodge) Travers. She attended rural Nance County grade schools and graduated from Fullerton High School. After graduation she taught for a few years in rural Nance County. She married Fred Brunken on September 20, 1940 in Grand Island, Nebraska. For 20 years, they farmed in the Creston, Nebraska area before moving to a farm in rural Columbus, Nebraska in 1960. In 1966, they moved into Columbus. Elsie worked for 15 years at the Columbus Community Hospital as a Dietary Assistant.
After retiring from the hospital, Elsie enjoyed traveling and going on bus tours. She enjoyed playing cards, bowling, quilting, cooking, flowers, and attending bible studies at the First Baptist Church where she was a member.

Danny Lee Abel
Danny L. Abel, 52, of Lincoln, Nebraska, formerly of Columbus lost his battle with cancer at his home on Tuesday, June 4, 2002.
A memorial service will be held at Gass Haney Funeral Home on Friday, June 07, 2002 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Gary Main officiating. There will be a family prayer service on Friday at 1:45 PM at the funeral home. Private family interment will be at the Central City Cemetery in Central City, Nebraska. There will be no visitation.
Danny L. Abel was born
August 12, 1949 at Grand Island, Nebraska to Stewart and Zetha (Norris) Abel. He attended grade school at District 50 in Merrick County. Danny was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist faith. In 1960 he moved with his family to Columbus, Nebraska. He graduated from Columbus High School in 1967, where he was on the varsity football team. He was an active member of the Demolay. He attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and worked for 10 years at Brunswick in Lincoln as a purchasing agent. He moved to California where he resided for a number of years. Danny then moved to Colorado and was salesman for Aero Tech Industries. He moved back to Lincoln in the past year. His hobby was designing and constructing houses with his brother Gary. He was a lover of the outdoors and spent many hours with his cats and dog. He enjoyed playing cards, especially pinochle.
