Floyd G. Hein
01/25/1932 - 11/15/2004

Floyd G. Hein, 72, of Scottsbluff passed away early Monday, November 15, 2004 at his home surrounded by his family, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. A graveside service will be held at 9:00 A.M. Saturday November 20, 2004 at Sunset Memorial Park with military funeral honors. A memorial service will follow at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, at Zion Evangelical Church in Scottsbluff with Pastors Doug Jones and Amos Harris officiating.
Floyd was born January 25, 2932 in Bayard, NE to George and Mollie (Leever) Hein. He was a graduate of Bayard High School, class of 1951. Floyd married Ruth Miller on March 23, 1952 and shortly thereafter entered the US Air Force where he spent time in Tennessee, Georgia, and Alaska. After the Air Force, Floyd and Ruth settled back in Scottsbluff where Floyd worked for Swifts Meat Packing Co. for 28 years; then for the City of Scottsbluff’s Water Department for 16 years.
Floyd was an avid hunter and fisherman and was a life-long member of Zion Evangelical Church where he held various offices. During his 19 month battle with cancer, Floyd always had an upbeat attitude and was an inspiration to all he encountered.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ruth; children: Steve and Debra Hein and grandchildren Allison and Bailey all of Sandpoint, ID, Susan and Brad Eschweiler of Littleton, CO and Rollie and Kimberly Hein of Sheridan WY; brother and sister-in-law: Marvin Ben and Lorrine Hein of Scottsbluff; brother-in-law and sister-in-law: Ken and Connie Price of Topeka, KS and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Mollie Hein and brother Raymond.

Charles Edward Schank

10/23/1919 - 5/4/2004

Charles Edward “Charlie” Schank, 84, of Scottsbluff, died at his home in the arms of his Savior and loving family on Tuesday, May 4, 2004. Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M.Saturday, May 8, 2004 at WestWay Church in Scottsbluff with Pastor Willie Coop officiating. Interment will be in West Lawn Cemetery in Gering with military rites by Admiral Dewey Post #1681 VFW.
Charlie was born October 23, 1919 to Charles R. and Anna (Wiedenhammer) Schank. He was the youngest of 12 children. The family moved to the Scottsbluff area when he was a young boy. He always said that growing up during the depression was the best lesson that could be learned. He quit school in the 4th grade to help the rest of his family, the rest of his life was lived and shaped by this experience. Work hard and share with those in need.
He joined the Navy in 1941. In that same year he married Lucille Young and to this union two daughters were born.
Charlie owned a bakery on the main street of Minatare in the early 40’s where he practiced the skills he had learned working in bakeries as a boy. He continued to practice these skills the rest of his life. He baked wedding cakes, birthday cakes for the Veterans home, family and friends and a record year of 100 dozen crispies. His crispies and rye bread were always first to go at the many bake sales to which he donated.
He had a traveling skating rink when the girls were small and he and Lucille would rent a hall in surrounding towns, load up an old station wagon with roller skates, and for three nights a week would provide activities for the young and old alike. He managed Terry’s Arena for many years and was the first Chief of Police for Terrytown.. While managing the Arena he organized Polio benefits and enlisted all the kids to show off their skating skills for these benefits.
He married Willa Bartlett August 23, 1958 in Bridgeport and to this union two sons were born.
He started Twin City Roofing in 1955 and operated the business with his sons until his retirement in 1986. Over the years he continued to organize and sponsor activities for the young and old working through the many organizations to which he belonged. He was director of the Soap Box Derby from 1962 to 1971.
He was a life member of many fraternal organizations, DAV, Elks, Eagles, Moose Lodge where he held many offices , earned his Pilgrim degree in 1979 and served as admissions representative for Mooseheart and Moosehaven. He was an Admiral in the Nebraska Navy, Honorary Deputy State Fire Marshall for 35 years, Aksarben Good Neighbor, and Volunteer Fireman Boss of the Year. Charlie took his oaths in these organizations seriously and was always willing when called upon to lend his time and resources to help out.
Charlie’s abiding passion was fishing at Lake Minatare. He enjoyed teaching his grandchildren about his passion. He was lovingly called, the Mayor of Lake Minatare by many who understood and shared his enthusiasm for the sport.
He lived a rich and full life and his gifts of whit, wisdom, experience and love will be greatly missed by those who knew him.
He is survived by his daughters and son-in-law: Carolann and Dick Rau of Gering, NE and Sherry Pottorff of Lake Minatare, NE, sons and daughters-in-law: Richard and Laurey Schank and Terry and Paula Schank both of Scottsbluff; stepsons: Emory Bartlett of the home, Everett and Suzanne Bartlett of Lincoln, NE and Ervin and Rebecca Bartlett of Mitchell; brother: Woody Schank of Gering and sisters: Dolly Otte of Jensen Beach, FL and Lillian Halloman of Spirit Lake, Idaho, 12 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Willa, parents, 5 brothers and 3 sisters.

Manuela G. Castillo

05/22/1909 - 5/7/2004

Manuela G. Castillo, 94, of Scottsbluff, died Thursday, May 7, 2004 at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 A.M. Monday, May 10, 2004 at Our Lady Of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Scottsbluff with Father Jim Golka officiating. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Park in Scottsbluff. A Vigil Service will be held at 6:00 P.M. Sunday, May 9, 2004 at Our Lady Of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Friends may call at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel in Scottsbluff from 1 until 5p.m. Saturday, May 8, 2004 and from 1p.m. until 4p.m. Sunday.
Manuela was born May 22, 1909 at Mercedes, TX to Ignacio and Soledad (Gonzalez) Rivas. She married Manuel Castillo in January 1925 and they made their home in Mercedes, TX. They moved to the valley in 1947.
She was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and enjoyed spending time with her family, crocheting and gardening.
She is survived by her sons and daughters, Ramon (Frances) Castillo of Cold Water, MS; Ignacio (Frances) Castillo of Del Rio, TX; Paul (Mary) Castillo of Fullerton, CA; Rose Hernandez of Scottsbluff; Robert (Martha) Castillo of Denver, CO; Frances Strickland of San Antonio, TX; Nick (Alex) Castillo of Lincoln, NE; Theresa (Serapio) Moreno of Colorado Springs, CO; Aurora Moreno of Colorado Springs, CO; James (Esther) Castillo of Scottsbluff; Mardi (Ray) Williams of Colorado Springs, CO; daughters-in-law, Bessie Castillo of Denver, Co; Virginia Castillo of Lincoln, NE; longtime companion Julio Bernal of Scottsbluff; 58 grandchildren; 110 great-grandchildren and 29 great-great grandchildren.
Her husband and sons, Lupe Castillo, J. Guadalupe Castillo preceded her in death.

Mollie Celeste Wheeler

07/19/1973 - 5/8/2004

Mollie Celeste Wheeler, 30, of Gering, died Saturday, May 8, 2004 at her home. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, May 12, 2004 at Bethel Baptist Church in Scottsbluff with Rev James Turnbo officiating. Cremation was held at Sunset Memorial Park Crematory. A private family inurnment will be held at Sunset Memorial Park in Scottsbluff.
Mollie was born July 19, 1973 in Denver, CO to Wallace and Lori (Collier) Schmidt. She attended school in Denver and moved to Scottsbluff in 1996. She met and married Jason L. Wheeler on June 19, 1999. Mollie was employed at Safeway and then stayed home to raise her family.
She loved her family and was very proud of her children. She enjoyed gardening, photography, and bowling.
She is survived by her husband, Jason, children, Alexander John Paul Gallegos, Avery Christopher Gallegos, Austin Jack Henry Wheeler, Aspen Savanna Wheeler all of the home and Nathan Eldon Johnson of Torrington, WY, father, Wallace Schmidt of Gering, Sister: Mildred Watts of Gering, NE, brother: Steve Schmidt and family of Laurel, MT; mother and father-in-law: Rex and Jacqueline Wheeler of Scottsbluff, and Jacqueline’s mother, Anna Marie Stowell of Scottsbluff, NE and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Mollie, was preceded in death by, her mother, Lori, and grandparents.
She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Mollie always had a good word and a smile for all.

Carl Hale Mensing

01/27/1943 - 5/13/2004

Carl Hale Mensing, 61, of Scottsbluff, died Thursday, May 13, 2004 at his home. A memorial service will be held 4:00 P.M. Monday, May 17, 2004 at the First United Methodist Church in Scottsbluff with Rev. Nancy Tomlinson officiating. A private family inurnment will be held at Fairview Cemetery.
Carl was born January 27, 1943 in Somerville, NJ to Henry Stewart and Jessamine (Hale) Mensing. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Animal Husbandry from Michigan State University. He married Sharon Feller April 25, 1964 in Blissfield, MI.
They lived in Michigan before moving to Fort Collins, CO in 1971 and later to Lamar, CO. In 1975 they moved to Scottsbluff. Carl’s passion in life was the cattle business; at the time of his death, he managed Banner Feeding Co.
Carl enjoyed fishing with his father and grandfather at the Jersey Shore, going white water rafting with his wife, exploring Alaska with his daughters, eating Oreo cookies and bags of potato chips, going to Tiffany’s track meets, skiing, and learning to walk again with his grandson Jake. He was an effective minimalist when it came to the spoken word.
Carl was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Scottsbluff where he was a member of the finance committee, a charter member and first president of the Wyo-Braska Cattle Feeders Association, and a member of the Nebraska Cattlemen Association and National Cattlemen Association.
He is survived by his wife Sharon, daughters: Lynne LaFever of Fairbanks, Alaska, Beth and her husband Joe Nahama of Bakersfield, CA and Tiffany Mensing of Hermosa Beach, CA, grandson: Jake Nahama of Bakersfield, CA, mother: Jessamine Mensing of Bridgewater, NJ, brother and sister-in-law: John Stewart and Carol Mensing of Matawan, NJ and their children Michele and Rodger, sister and brother-in-law: Jessamine and Robert Kinny of Louisville, KY and their children Eric and Elizabeth.
His father H. Stewart and his son-in-law Michael J. LaFever preceded him in death.

Ardeth Gayle Lowry

09/26/1918 - 5/16/2004

Ardeth (Art) Lowry, age 85,passed away at Poudre Valley Hospital, May 16, 2004 in Fort Collins, CO. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 21, 2004 at the Berean Church in Scottsbluff with Dr. Charles L. Bonds officiating. Inurnment will be in West Lawn Cemetery in Gering.

Art was born in Goshen County, WY, Sept. 26, 1918 in a sod house to Emory C. and Flora B. (Bridges) Lowry. He received his education at Mountain View School in Goshen County.
Art met Lois V. Bartow in Gering, NE, they were married August 16, 1940 in Harrisburg, NE.
He was a farmer and mechanic, a laborer for Brown’s Beanery and Cement & Tile, a tire buster for Swanks for 18 years. He retired from West Lawn Cemetery after being caretaker for 8 years.
Art was an avid “armchair” historian on much of the local history and places in eastern Wyoming and the Panhandle area.
Art and Lois moved to Fort Collins, CO. in February 2004.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Lois. Daughters Patricia (Richard) Johnson of Fort Collins, CO, Wilda Britthouer (Gary Boots) of Scottsbluff, NE, sons Alton (Betty) Lowry of Fort Collins, CO, Larry (Rita) Lowry of Clarksville, AR, Karl (Patsy) Lowry of Lexington, NE, and daughter Priscilla (Bill) Davis of Jacksonville, FL. 21 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren. 2 sisters Wilma (Fred) Jaggers of Windsor, CA. and Barbara Bacchi of Healdsburg, CA, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family and friends. Special family Jim and Beanie Grieser and family of LaPorte, CO.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 3 brothers Clifford, Allen, and Ralph, and a granddaughter Amy Jo.

Jean Vogel

05/06/1922 - 5/15/2004

Jean Vogel, 82 of Mesa, AZ, passed away Saturday, May 15, 2004 at Mesa General Hospital in Mesa, AZ. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 25, 2004 at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel in Scottsbluff with Pastor Scott Clark officiating. Interment will be at Creighton Valley Cemetery near Melbeta next to her husband and son, Marion.
She was born March 6, 1922 to Forrest and Cora (Crabill) Cochran at Lincoln. Township, Iowa. She spent much of her youth in Iowa and some of her teen years in Melbeta, Nebraska. She married Ralph (Pete) Scott Vogel in 1940 in Iowa and together they had five children.
Jean helped form Valley Commodities and ran it for approximately 10 years. She then formed System Seeding where she was honored as "Small Business Woman of the Year" in the State of Nebraska. She managed Cactus Wren Court in Apache Junction, AZ until 1999 when she retired.
Jean was a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Jean is survived by sons, Ronald (Barbara) and Norman (Helen); grandsons, Scott Vogel, JR Vogel, Malt Vogel; granddaughters, Tammy Zimmerer, Annet Gamet, Paula McDowell, Lynn Colangelo and Dede Anglin; sister, Rowena (Merle) Labertew; brother, Forrest (Marge) Cochran, Jr.; sister, Lois (Ron) Meier; sister Joan (Jack) Corr; and brother, Dean (Judy) Cochran. She also has 16 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband and sons, Marion and Steven, and daughter, Janice, as well as both of her parents.

Mollie Brotzman

MOLLIE BROTZMAN

Mollie Brotzman, 90 of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, died Thursday, May 20, 2004 at Beverly Healthcare Center.
Her funeral service will be held Monday, May 24, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at the Northfield Assembly of God Church in Gering with Pastor Mitchel A. Smith officiating. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials have been established to the church. Mollie was born on December 24, 1913 in Chicago, Ill. to John Christ Schmidt, Sr. and Anna (Karlina) Schmidt. She married Harry H. Brotzman on November 21, 1934 and made their home in Scottsbluff and Sacramento, CA. They later moved back to Scottsbluff and for about 4 years in Greeley, CO. before returning to Scottsbluff again.
She is survived by her three sons Rev. Harry Brotzman, Jr. of State College, PA, Rev. Norman Brotzman of Newcastle, Wy, and Rev. Timothy Brotzman of Aurora, CO.; two daughters Doris Snider of Colorado Springs, CO and Onietha Hardwick of Pierce, CO.; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren and sister Anna Quelle of Scottsbluff.
Mollie was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brother John.

Katherine Elizabeth Heilbrun

05/12/1913 - 5/27/2004

Katherine Elizabeth Heilbrun, 91, of Scottsbluff died Thursday, May 27, 2004 at Wel Life in Scottsbluff. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, June 1, 2004 at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel with Pastor Doug Jones officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.

Katherine was born May 12, 1913 in Arcola, Saskatchewan, Canada to John and Katie (Cook) Schwartz. On August 19, 1919 she moved with her family to Scottsbluff where she grew up and attended school. She married Dave Heilbrun on December 27, 1938 at Scottsbluff. They farmed in the Morrill, Lyman, Minatare, McGrew and Scottsbluff areas. In 1955 they moved to Gering. She worked at the Copper Kettle for many years, the Terry’s Drive In snack bar, and the Gering School lunch program. She retired in May of 1979.
While in Gering, Katherine was a member of the Gering Zion Church where she was active in the Gering Zion’s Women’s Guild and German choir for many years. She transferred her membership to the Zion Evangelical Church where she was a member prior moving to Gering. She was organist for eleven years, choir member and Sunday School teacher.
She was loved to church music, sewing , crocheting, cooking and her family.
She is survived by, her daughter, Beverly Ludwig of Scottsbluff, NE, sons and daughters-in-law: Jim and Judy Heilbrun of Banner County, NE, and Steve and Pam Heilbrun of Torrington, WY, 9 grandchildren, 4 great grandsons, 3 great granddaughters, sisters: Lillian Knaub of Scottsbluff, NE and Dorothy and her husband Stanley Stricker of Gering, NE and brother-in-law Gus Engstrom of Gering, NE, 2 brothers: John Schwartz and Bob and his wife Myla Schwartz all of Scottsbluff.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters, Mary Weber, Mollie Engstrom and Ann Wegelin and son-in-law: Allan Ludwig.

Velma Mary Knoedler

01/30/1909 - 5/31/2004

Velma Mary Knoedler, 95, of Kimball passed away at the Kimball County Manor on Monday, May 31, 2004. A celebration of her life will be held at 10:30 A. M. Thursday, June 3, 2004 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Scottsbluff with Pastor Dwayne Hunzeker officiating. Internment will be in Sunset Memorial Park, Scottsbluff.
Velma was born January 30, 1909 in Fremont, Nebraska to John and Sine (Jorgensen) Stull. In June of 1913 the family loaded all their worldly possessions in a boxcar and headed for Potter, Nebraska. In December of 1919 they moved to a farm 17 miles north of Kimball where they had to build all the farm buildings.
Velma graduated from the 8th grade at Twin Tree School and graduated from Banner County High School in 1927. She attended Chadron State College later where she got her Teaching Certificate. On July 9, 1932 she married Paul Knoedler. To this union two children were born, Melvin Eugene on July 8, 1933 and Margaret Kathleen on October 18, 1935. Paul and Velma retired from farming north of Kimball in 1961 and moved to Gering. After her husband's death in 1974, Velma continued to live in Gering until the last five years when she lived at the Kimball County Manor. She was a lifetime member of First English Lutheran Church in Kimball where she was baptized, confirmed and married.
Velma, will be lovingly remembered by her family and all who knew her. She is survived by her daughter Kathy and husband George Van Pelt of Kimball, her son Melvin and wife LuVerne of Gering, sister Lorrine (Stull) Lockwood of Fort Collins, Colorado, grandchildren Brad (Kenna) Van Pelt, Bruce (Sefrina) Van Pelt, Vicki (Roy) Howell, Linda (Jim) Moser, Brenda (Brian) Stott, Tami Van Pelt and 12 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Paul, granddaughter Julie Ann Knoedler, brother Clifford, and sisters Marguerite, Geraldine, and Ila Marie (Bobbie).
