David Noel, 14 of 2621 Central Avenue #5, Kearney, died Wednesday, July 9, 2003 after a boating accident in Fresno Slough near Mendota, CA. Funeral services will be Saturday, July 19, 2003 at 4 P.M. at O’Brien – Straatmann – Apfel Funeral Home in Kearney with Rev. Dr. Marvin Koelling officiating. Interment will be at a later date. Visitation will be Friday from 5 to 7 P.M. and 1 hour before services on Saturday at O’Brien – Straatmann – Apfel Funeral Home in Kearney. Memorials are suggested to the family. O’Brien – Straatmann – Apfel Funeral Home of Kearney is in charge of arrangements.

He was born icon on January 22, 1989 in Redlands, California to David and Donna (Kenneda) Noel. The family moved to Kearney in 1996. David attended school at Sunrise Middle School in Kearney and living with his mother and stepfather, Joseph Walters. He worked for the Kearney Hub and The Triangle, he was also employed by Donna Walker for lawn and gardening work.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church. In school, he wrestled for Sunrise Youth at Bellevue School in Sonora, CA, and played football in the Pop Warner League. He enjoyed playing cards at FunTime Hobby, rollerblading, skateboarding, and listening to loud head banging music, his favorite group was “Korn”. He was also a W.W.F. wrestling fan and liked bald eagles. He had dreams of becoming a policeman.

Survivors include his mother and stepfather both of Kearney; brothers, Joseph and Quintin Walters of Kearney, and Brian Noel of Sonora, California; sisters, Susan Noel, Sadi Noel, and Misty Walters all of Kearney; grandmothers, Wilda Kenneda of Kearney, and Marty Stone of Sun City, CA; grandfather, Joe Noel of Oroville, CA; and great-grandmother, Melinda Stone of Sun City, CA.

He was preceded in death by his father, David Gene Noel of Sonora, CA and grandmother, Sue Noel of Oroville, CA.

LeRoy F. Meyers
66, Kearney Resident

LeRoy Meyers, 66, of 120 East 24th Street, Kearney died Wednesday, July 9, 2003 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. Monday, July 14 at St. James Catholic Church in Kearney with Rev. Tom Mullowney officiating. Interment will be at the Kearney Cemetery with military rites performed by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #759, American Legion Post #52 and National Guard United all of Kearney. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 with the family receiving friends from 6 to 7 Sunday at O’Brien – Straatmann – Apfel Funeral Home in Kearney with a Prayer Vigil at 7 P.M. Memorials are suggested to the family. O’Brien – Straatmann – Apfel Funeral Home of Kearney is in charge of arrangements.

LeRoy was born icon on October 18, 1936 at the family farm in Kearney, Nebraska to Joseph (Joe) and Elizabeth (Schram) Meyers. He grew up in Kearney and received his education at Saint James School and graduated from Kearney High School in 1954. He entered the U.S. Army in May of 1960 and was honorably discharged in April of 1966. He was united in marriage to Sharon Moon-McGown on February 7, 1964 in Kearney, Nebraska. Once married the couple lived on the ourskirts of town where LeRoy worked as a county surveyor while farming. In 1969, LeRoy and Sharon moved to Kearney where he began working for Carmichael Construction out of Hastings, Nebraska. While employed by Carmichael, LeRoy and his family lived in Cambridge before returning to Kearney in 1972. LeRoy worked for Carmichael for many years before starting his own construction company in 1978. LeRoy later returned to Carmichael Construction where he worked until he took a position at YRTC in the fall of 1987. There he worked until he retired in 1990 due to illness.

He was a member of the church and Kearney Eagle’s Club.

LeRoy enjoyed fishing, hunting and being outdoors. He also loved spending time with friends and family, especially his grandchildren. LeRoy was a hardworking, generous and caring individual, he will be greatly missed.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon of Kearney; daughters, Angela Gibreal and Dana Meyers both of Kearney, and Stacie Glatter of Gretna; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers.

Irene George
83, Kearney Resident

Irene George, 83, of Kearney and formerly of Johnson, Nebraska, died, Monday, July 14th at the Mt. Carmel Home in Kearney. Memorial services will be held at a later date. There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to Alzheimers Research Foundation or the family’s choice. O’Brien – Straatmann – Apfel Funeral Home in Kearney is in charge of arrangements.

She was born icon on the family farm home southwest of Eustis, Frontier County, Nebraska on May 27, 1920. She was the sixth of nine children born icon to Martin and Margareta (Hust) Hablitzel. She attended country school near the farm home in Frontier County, Nebraska, and was entered on the Cradle Roll of the Lone Star Church of The Nazarene where she later became a member. While growing up Irene contributed much to the family home. On reaching adulthood she accompanied her older brothers and sisters to Hutchinson, KS where she was employed for several years, later moving to Excelsior Springs, MO, where she was employed by the Mitchell Clinic.

While employed at the Mitchell Clinic she met her future husband, Gratton Harold George. On January 1, 1947 they were united in marriage in the First Baptist Church in Clewiston, FL where they became members and made their home in the community until the death of Gratton in 1974. Irene was influential in Gratton becoming a ham radio operator and later assisting him in becoming a County Commissioner of Hendry County for 18 years. She also assisted in the operation of the “The Gratton George Electronics” business. After the death of Gratton in 1974, Irene was employed by the Hendry General Hospital in Clewiston in the Physical Therapy Department. In March 1977, Irene moved to Johnson, Nebraska where she continued in a nursing care capacity until 1985.

Irene became a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Johnson and active in various church activities, a past member of “Johnson Womens Club” and senior citizens club in Johnson, a member of the “Shuffles and Ruffles” square dance club in Auburn, NE, a member of the “Democratic Executive Committee”, and “Chairman of the American Cancer Society” of Hendry County, FL. She moved to Kearney in 1999 where she lived until her death.

Survivors include brothers, Fritz Hablitzel of Princeton, IL, Edwin Hablitzel of Mountain View, CA, Roy Hablitzel of San Diego, CA; sister, Bertha Younglund of Stromsburg, NE and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gratton; parents; brothers, Adolph of Wichita, KS, and Paul of Englewood, CA; sisters, Minnie Miller of Thomas, WVa, and Emma Blinde of Kearney.

Dixie Ann (Opp) Linn
Lincoln resident, former Wood River resident

Dixie Ann (Opp) Linn, 52, of Lincoln died Tuesday, July 22, 2003 in Lincoln. Memorial services will be held at 1:00 PM, Friday, July 25 at the Apfel – O’Brien – Straatmann Funeral Home in Wood River with Rev. Rose Bartleson officiating. Visitation will be 4-8 PM Thursday at the funeral home with cremation to follow. Burial will be in the Opp family plot in Wood River Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Centerpointe Counseling in Lincoln. Apfel – O’Brien – Straatmann Funeral Home of Wood River is in charge of arrangements.

She was born icon July 3, 1951 at the old Lutheran Hospital in Grand Island to Frederick John and Hazel Mae (Lilienthal) Opp. She grew up and received her education in Wood River, graduating with the first class from Wood River Rural High School in 1969. She graduated from the Humbolt Insitute in Minneapolis the next year and went to work as a waitress, telephone operator and nurses’ aide. While living in California, she married Roger Linn. They were later divorced. Most recently she was employed as a laundress at Paramount Linen and a baker at Super Saver, both in Lincoln.

She became a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Wood River. She enjoyed her family and especially her nieces and nephews, serving as godmother to Susan Jones and Cheryl LeBenne. A special enjoyment was riding on Fritz and Hazel’s train float as they participated in area parades.

Survivors include; brothers, Leo Opp and wife Carol of Hickman, Erhard “Hap” Opp and special friend Marilyn Styron of Wood River, and Ervin Opp and wife Barbara of Weston; sister, Anna Mae Wood and husband John of Wood River; 11 nieces and nephews, Alan Opp of Kansas City, KS, Susan Jones of Pittsburgh, PA, Lisa Leonard of Marathon City, WI, Cheryl LeBenne of Erie, PA, Joseph Opp of Jacksonville, FL, Darcie Opp of Chickasha, OK, Ellie Opp and Emily Opp of Omaha, April Opp of Lexington, Frederick Opp of Lincoln and Andrew Opp of Weston; 11 great-nieces and nephews, Amber, Erhardt, Cory, Logan, Nicole and Landon Opp, Aaron and Tiffany Leonard, Anna and Mary LeBenne and Scott Jordan.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a great-niece, Kayla Mae Johnson.

Lester Layher
82, Wood River Resident

Lester Howard Layher, 82, of Wood River died Thursday, July 24, 2003 at the St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Monday, July 28 at the First Presbyterian Church in Wood River with Rev. John Bartleson officiating. Burial will be in the Wood River Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-8 P.M. Sunday at the Apfel – O’Brien – Straatmann Funeral Home in Wood River. Memorials are suggested to Wood River Fire and Rescue or donor’s choice. Apfel – O’Brien – Straatmann Funeral Home of Wood River is in charge of arrangements.

Lester was born icon on April 11, 1921 on the farm northwest of Wood River to John and Mary Anne (Carstensen) Layher. He grew up on the family farm and attended school at District 24 in Wood River and graduated from high school in 1939. He was united in marriage to Bernice Engel on September 15, 1943 in Grand Island. After which the couple farmed northeast of Wood River. He farmed with his brother, John and did custom corn shelling. He later farmed with his sons until his retirement.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Wood River, Platt-Duetsche Society in Grand Island. He enjoyed collecting and restoring John Deere Tractors and spending winters in Arizona.

Survivors include his sons, Kenneth of Grand Island, and Harland of Wood River; daughter, Janet and husband Lyle Broeder of Hershey; brother, John of Grand Island; sisters, Alice Uhrich and Ruth Engel both of Wood River; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice; brother, Frank; sisters, Helen Knick and Elsie Flannery.

G. Paige Pettett
83, Elm Creek Resident

G. Paige Pettett, 83, of Elm Creek died Monday, July 28, 2003, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney . Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Saturday, August 2, at United Methodist Church in Elm Creek with the Rev. Cathy Cole officiating. Interment will be at the Elm Creek Cemetery with military rites performed by the Fort Riley Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 P.M., Friday at the O’Brien – Straatmann – Apfel Funeral Chapel in Elm Creek.

Memorials are suggested to a scholarship fund to be established in his name. O’Brien – Straatmann – Apfel Funeral Home of Kearney and Elm Creek is in charge of arrangements.

He was born icon on August 5, 1919 in rural Elm Creek to Joseph and Lilly V. (Carlson) Pettett.

He grew up in the Elm Creek area and received his education at District 94 and graduated from Elm Creek High School in 1936. He attended Kearney State Teachers’ College , majoring in drafting.

He worked as an apprentice with his uncle in Billings , MT for a year, then moved to Denver , where he continued his carpentry work. He entered the U.S. Army on January 28, 1942 and served during the World War II. He was honorably discharged on October 15, 1945. He was united in marriage to Lorraine Andreason on October 1, 1948 in Grand Island , NE , after which the couple lived in Elm Creek, where Paige farmed and was a self-employed carpenter.

He built many homes in the Elm Creek and surrounding areas.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, American Legion in Elm Creek, and a past school board member in Elm Creek. He enjoyed spending time with family, was an avid reader, and enjoyed sports, fishing, farming, and crossword puzzles.

Survivors include his daughter, Barb and husband Eugene Florell of Elm Creek; daughter-in-law, Sally Florell of Elm Creek; grandsons, Clint Florell of Kearney, Jeff and Luke Florell both of Elm Creek, Blake Florell of Denver, CO; Jason Florell of Overton; granddaughters, Jan Armbrust of Phoenix, AZ, Lisa Kegley of Kearney, Stacey Moes, Kristen and Rebecca Florell all of Elm Creek; great-grandsons, Jordan and Alex Armbrust of Phoenix, AZ, Brandt and Samuel Florell of Kearney, Nolan Kegley of Kearney, Gavyn Florell of Overton; great-granddaughters, Kelsey and Olivia Kegley of Kearney, Lauren and Taylor Moes of Elm Creek, and Paetyn Florell of Overton.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine and son, Greg.

Hazel Orcutt
88, Kearney Resident

Hazel M. Orcutt, 88, 1004 W. 11 th St. Apt. M-44, Kearney , died Tuesday, July 29 at her residence. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M.,
Monday, August 4, 2003 at O’Brien – Straatmann – Apfel Funeral Home in Kearney with Rev. Dr. Marvin Koelling officiating. Interment will be at 1:00 P.M. on Monday at the Minden Cemetery .

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 on Sunday at O’Brien – Straatmann – Apfel Funeral Home in Kearney .

Memorials are suggested to Bethany Home in Minden .

She was born icon on March 22, 1915 in Holyoke , CO to Charles and Jesse ( Taylor ) Bennett. The family lived in Brush, CO until her mother’s death in 1923. Then she and her sister, Gladys moved to Phillipsburg , KS to live with their Aunt Clara and Uncle “Jay” Bennett, her father’s oldest brother.

Her father joined them later. In the summer of 1924, the family moved to Alma , NE to live with Aunt Hattie and Uncle Roll Bennett, her dad’s brother. She lived with them until 1926. Her father married Ada Barber, who was a second mother, never a step-mother.

The family lived in Alma where Hazel graduated from Alma High School in 1934.

She attended Kearney State Teacher’s College for two years, and later taught school in Harlan and Franklin Counties in Nebraska .

On January 21, 1940 she married George W. Orcutt of Franklin , NE in Smith Center , KS . The couple lived in Alma , Franklin , Kearney , and Axtell , NE and also lived in Wichita , KS . During WW II she worked for Naval Civil Service and Supply in Seattle , WA . She later managed fabric stores in Wichita and Kearney before her retirement in 1976.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Kearney .
Hazel enjoyed sewing, crafts, flowers, antiques, camping, traveling, spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Survivors include her sons, Stephen and wife Kathleen of Kearney, John and wife Martha of Evans, CO; 7 grandchildren, sister, Gladys Hayes of Wichita , KS , several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George; parents, and her second mother, Ada.

Michael Seim
Michael J. Seim, 62, of Grand Island, died Tuesday June 19, 2007 at St. Francis Medical Center following a battle with cancer.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Grand Island. The Reverend Jack Rademacher will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island Cemetery with full military honors.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday with a parish rosary at 7 p.m. Friday at St. Leo’s Catholic Church.

All Faiths Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mike was born icon June 2, 1945 at Grand Island the son of Harold and Loraine (Renken) Seim. He was raised and received his education in Grand Island graduating from Grand Island Senior High in 1963. He entered the United States Navy in 1964, serving during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged in 1970. Following the military he completed his education at Kearney State College. On November 29, 1969, he was united in marriage to Jane Easley. They made their home in Grand Island where he worked for the city of Grand Island Underground Electrical Department for 22 years, retiring in May 2006.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Jane, daughter Emma Seim of Kansas City, MO, sons and daughters-in-law Lucas and Traci Seim of Columbus, NE and Jason and Stacey Seim of Brookfield, Wisconsin and brothers and sisters-in-law Tom and Kathy Seim of Stone Mountain, GA, John and Kathy Seim of York, NE, Ronald Seim of Minden, NE, and grandchildren Rylee, Ashlee, Katie, Anna and Matthew. His parents preceded him in death.

He is a member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, Alcoholics Anonymous, United Veterans Club, and the Liederkranz. Mike enjoyed Nebraska football, golfing and spending time with family and friends.

Memorials are suggested to Central Catholic, the Crisis Center, or donor’s choice.
