Leslie Scholz
Leslie Scholz, 64, of rural Grand Island, died Saturday, July 5, 2008, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Peace Lutheran Church. The Rev. Michael Reiners will officiate. Burial will be in the Wiegert Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with family greeting friends from 6 to 8, at All Faiths Funeral Home.

Mr. Scholz was born icon on March 6, 1944, in rural Hall County to Anthony and Clara (Pollock) Scholz.

Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Sue; his children, Sarah and Jason, both living at home; his mother of Grand Island; a brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Jolynn Scholz of Grand Island; and a sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and Garry Schmidt of Lexington.

Other survivors are a godson, Aaron Scholz, and other nieces and nephews.

Leslie was raised on a family farm, attending school at District 55, Trinity Lutheran and graduating from Grand Island Senior High, class of 1962.

He married Sue Blecha on Sept. 28, 1985.

Leslie was employed at Grand Island Livestock and Third City Sale Barn. He also farmed and for the past eight years, he was a meat clerk at Super Saver.

He is a member of Peace Lutheran Church and the Platt-Duetsche. Leslie enjoyed dancing, fishing and was active with scouting and 4-H, including entomology with his son.

His father preceded him in death.

Memorials are suggested to either Heartland Lutheran High School or Trinity Lutheran School.

Phyllis J. Smith
Phyllis J. Smith, 81, of Grand Island, died Wednesday March 19, 2008 at St. Francis Medical Center.

Services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday at All Faiths Funeral Home. Burial will be at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Phyllis was born icon October 6, 1926 at Ord, NE the daughter of Leonard and Loretta Covert. She was raised in Ord where she graduated form high school, class of 1944. She was united in marriage to Maynard Smith on October 18, 1944 at Ord. They moved to Grand Island in 1949 where she was employed by Ellen’s Flower Basket and Barr Junior High School.

Her husband Maynard preceded her in death November 17, 2002.

She is a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Phyllis enjoyed crocheting, camping and spending time with family.

Those left to cherish her memory are daughter Connie Tobler of Alda, a son and daughter-in-law, Duane and Sharon Smith of Oklahoma City, OK and a sister Erma Axthelm of Mt. Vernon, WA.

Other survivors are grandchildren, Steve, Shelly, Becky, Tearza, Kyle and Tori, and 10 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death also by her daughter Diana Schupp and a brother Paul Covert.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Geraldene L. Springsguth
Geraldene L. Springsguth, 90, of Grand Island, died Saturday, March 15, 2008 at the Grand Island Nebraska Veterans Home.

Graveside services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Grand Island City Cemetery.

There will be no visitation. Mrs. Springsguth was cremated. All Faiths Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Gerry was born icon March 22, 1917 at Phillips, Nebraska the daughter of Fred and Anna (Barr) Weiler. She was raised on a farm in Kansas where she graduated from high school. She moved to Grand Island where she was united in marriage to Wilbur Springsguth in 1938. She worked for the family owned White House Café. She is member of Trinity United Methodist Church.

Her husband Wilbur preceded her in death in 1977.

Those left to cherish her memory are, a son Howard Springsguth of Grand Island, daughter and son-in-law, Cecelia and Richard Harrington of Denver, CO, brother Bob Weiler of Kelso, WA and sisters, Irma Knepof of Gresham, OR, Peggy Bingham of Tampa, FL and seven grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, her parents and sisters, Ella Korell and Weinie Boone and a brother Fred Weiler, Jr. preceded her in death.

Memorials are suggested to the donor’s choice

Laurence E (Larry) Steadman
Laurence E. (Larry) Steadman, 70, of Chicago, formerly of Boston, died March 17, 2008, at Windermere House in Chicago.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. The Very Rev. Dean Robert Neske will officiate. Private burial will be Friday at Prairie Union Cemetery in Stella.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at All Faiths Funeral Home in Grand Island.

Mr. Steadman was born icon June 28, 1937, at Stella to Melvin and Mabel (Howell) Steadman.

Survivors of the immediate family include three sons, Christopher of New Lebanon, N.Y., Geoffrey of Brighton, Mass., and David of Clinton, N.Y.; and a brother, Dennis of Lakeland, Tenn.

Other survivors include a granddaughter, Sarah of New Lebanon, N.Y.

Mr. Steadman graduated Valedictorian from Falls City High School in Falls City, before attending Oberlin College on full scholarship. Returning to Nebraska after graduation in 1959, he briefly attended the University of Nebraska. After a short stint with Shell Oil, Larry came on as Marketing Director for Hornady Manufacturing Co. in Grand Island.

His tenure at Hornady and in Grand Island was filled with creativity. He wrote the very first Hornady Handbook of Reloading, which was an almost-instant best-seller. Apart from work, Larry was an active actor, director and board member of the Grand Island Little Theatre (GILT) and co-founder of a foreign film society, Cinema 2.

In 1968, Larry was elected to the Grand Island School Board, but resigned to travel to Boston, to begin his studies at the Harvard Graduate School of Business, from which he graduated in 1970 with High Distinction. A Baker Scholar at HBS, he went on to receive his Doctor of Business Administration from Harvard in 1976.

A unique opportunity presented after graduation to work as an Assistant Professor at the Iran Center for Management Studies in Tehran. He taught corporate finance and capital markets in this Harvard-affiliated Iranian graduate institution and helped create and conduct development programs for Iranian and international managers. He was evacuated from Iran following the first seizure of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran (1979).

Arriving in Boston, he accepted a position with the Cambridge Research Institute and in 1981 co-founded Steadman-Coles Management Consultants (S/CI) of Boston with Ronald F. Coles. S/CI was a general management consulting firm, working with clients AT&T, Aetna, US West, Motorola, Data General and Fidelity. Laurence served as president until the company closed in 1995.

Relocating to Cincinnati, Laurence served as Associate Professor of Management at Thomas More College and also as an adjunct faculty member at Miami and Xavier universities. An avid reader, cook, and music lover, Larry moved to Chicago in 2003. He was a supporter and member of the Lyric Opera of Chicago and an active (and youngest) member of Chicago's Oldest Men's Book Club.

Mr. Steadman was retired and working on a book, "The Admiral of Hyde Park."

Ohleen L Swanson
Ohleen L. Swanson, 87, of Grand Island died Saturday, March 15, 2008, at Hamilton Manor in Aurora.

Services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Reverend Francis T. Curran will officiate. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday with a parish rosary at 6:00 p.m. all at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with honors by the Catholic Daughters of America Court Queen of Peace #2227.

Ohleen was born icon on March 18, 1920 at Burwell, NE the daughter of Robert and Edith Loretta Hoppes. She was raised and received her education at Burwell. She was united in marriage to Forrest Swanson on October 13, 1940 in Burwell. They lived in Burwell until making Grand Island their home where she worked at Dub’s Sporting Store until becoming a full time mother following the birth of her children.

She is a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of America, she loved to dance, crotchet and enjoyed life.

Her husband Forrest Swanson preceded her in death in 1990.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Connie Swanson and Pam Swanson both of Grand Island and brother and sister-in-law, Dale and Ruth Hoppes of Ord and sisters, Lilas Rowse of Burwell and Loy “Tootie” Smith of Boelus, sister-in-law, Roma Hoppes of Burwell, grandchildren, Mark Kersten, Tony Kersten, Stephanie Kersten and Olivia Swanson.

In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by a son Dennis “Danny”, a brother Willard Hoppes and a sister Ilva Schuyler.

Memorials are suggested to Central Catholic or a fund will be established in Ohleen’s name.

Jerry E. Thorne
Jerry E. Thorne, 77, of Grand Island died Tuesday, June 10, 2008, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of All Faiths Funeral Home with military honors.

At Mr. Thorne's request, cremation will take place, with no visitation.

Mr. Thorne was born icon Sept. 27, 1930, in Grand Island to Hans and Katherine (Geseking) Thorne.

Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Bev; two sons and daughters-in-law, Terry and Rita Thorne of Lexington and Mat and Michelle Thorne of Grand Island; and two daughters, Traci Buettner of Grand Island and Linda Grape of Columbus.

Those also left to cherish his memory are grandchildren, Mikayla Thorne, Brett Buettner, Brady Buettner, Lynnsey Grape, Chase Grape and Cole Thorne.

His parents and a brother, Jack Thorne, preceded him in death.

Jerry was raised in Ottumwa, Iowa, Lexington and Hastings, graduating from Hastings High School in 1949. He attended Hastings College, where he played basketball. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War.

On July 2, 1955, Jerry was united in marriage to Beverly Connole at Grand Island. The couple lived in Grand Island, then in Lexington, where they owned and operated a motel for two years before moving to Hastings. In Hastings, Jerry was a Realtor with his brother. In 1974 they moved to Grand Island, where he worked for Sam Huston Reality. Jerry then went to work for the Thompson Company, where he retired in 1992.

Jerry enjoyed horse racing, football, baseball and basketball. He was an avid Husker fan and Boston Celtics fan. He was a member of the American Legion.

A memorial fund will be established in his name..

Lavon 'Barney' Turnbull
Lavon 'Barney' Turnbull, 78, of Grand Island died Sunday, June 8, 2008, at home with his family by his side.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Grace Lutheran Church. The Rev. Daniel Bremer will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at All Faiths Funeral Home, with family greeting friends from 5 to 7.

Mr. Turnbull was born icon Dec. 18, 1929, at Pawnee City to Ray and Christina (Lauts) Turnbull.

Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Anne; three sons and daughters-in-law, David and Marsha Turnbull of Pullman, Wash., Robert and Velma Turnbull and Evan and Leigh Turnbull, all of Grand Island; a brother and sister-in-law, Irvin and Carol Jean Turnbull of Georgetown, Texas; and two sisters and brothers-in-law, Belva and Jim Hullendar of Ocean Springs, Miss., and Wilena and Ray Folken of Wilkesboro, N.C.

Other survivors include seven grandchildren, David, Hannah, Amelia, Justin and Taylor Turnbull and Donald and Andrew Kerzmann.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He was raised and received his education in Pawnee City, graduating in 1948. He attended Central Technical Institute in Kansas City, Mo., graduating with an Associate of Science Degree in electronics in 1958. Barney served in the United States Air Force from 1950 until his discharge in 1953 with the rank of sergeant.

He was united in marriage to Anne Wiegand on Dec. 27, 1951, at Beatrice, after which the couple lived in Mississippi, Kansas City, Mo., Lincoln and Chanute, Kan., before moving to Grand Island in 1963. Barney worked as an electronics technician for the Federal Aviation Administration before retiring in 1988. After retiring, he worked at Stuhr Museum.

He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Platt-Duetsche and Stuhr Museum. His hobbies included woodworking.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Grace Lutheran Church, Heartland Lutheran High School or St. Francis Hospice.
