LORENZ BILL MONTOYA
Omaha

Funeral services for Lorenz Bill Montoya, 63, Omaha will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at St. Robert Ballarmine Church, 11802 Pacific St., in Omaha, with military rites performed by the Nebraska State GI Forum Honor Guard. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, at the Roeder Mortuary in Omaha. A rosary will be recited at the mortuary at 8 p.m. Thursday.
He died Sept. 30, 2002, in Omaha.
Lorenz was born April 22, 1939, in Albuquerque, N.M., to Frank and Lugardita Montoya. His mother died when he was three, so Bill and his brother were raised by their older sister, and later her husband. The family moved to Lexington in 1947. As a boy, he was active in Boy Scouts and played sports at Lexington High School, excelling in track, football and basketball.
In 1961, he joined the Army and served in Europe during the Berlin Crisis. He was discharged in 1964
After leaving the Army, he began dating the former Eva Jean Silas, who he knew in Lexington.
He was a truck driver for McCann Concrete Co. in Omaha. He was a member of VFW Post 1581 and Commander of the Mexican-American Veterans. He was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Am Vets, American Legion Post 1 and Nebraska State Honor Guard Forum.
Lorenz was the first VFW member to make All-American five times for the state of Nebraska and he was an all-state selection seven times.
Survivors include his wife, Eva Montoya, Omaha; a sister Della (Manuel) Rivera Albuquerque, N.M.; a sister-in-law, Jennie Gutierrez Lexington; and many nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank & Lugardita Montoya, two brothers, Bob Montoya and Fred Apodaca, and a sister, Cookie Rodgers.

ROSE J. GRUBER
Eustis

Services for Rose J. Gruber, 95, Eustis, were Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Eustis, with Pastor Bill Waterman officiating. Burial was in the East Cemetery at Eustis.
Rose died Friday, Nov. 27, 2002, at the Elwood Care Center.
She was born July 21, 1907, at Eustis to Phillip and Anna (Hueftle) Schweitzer and was welcomed into the Christian faith through holy baptism at the United Methodist Church in Eustis Nov. 7, 1907. She was confirmed in her faith June 13, 1920. She attended Eustis Public School and graduated in 1925.
On June 14, 1926, she married Edwin E. Gruber and the couple resided on the family farm east of Eustis for 35 years. In 1961, they moved to Eustis. She had made her home at the Elwood Care Center since August 2001.
She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and the women's organization, the Mary-Martha Circle, and a member of the choir for many years. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Eustis Women's Club, Eustis Public Library and the Women's Benefit Association. There was rarely a day that you didn't see Rose at the Eustis Senior Center.
Survivors include a son, Dennis (Linda) Gruber, Eustis; three grandchildren, Lisa Hornick, Wilmington, N.C., Seth Gruber, Eustis, and Steve Gruber, Phoenix, Ariz.; four great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many friends and neighbors.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin in 1985, a son, Dean in 1973, and seven brothers.
A memorial has been established in her memory.
Berryman Funeral Home of Cozad was in charge of arrangements.

CYNTHIA J. WEHTJE
Osceola

Memorial services for Cynthia J. (Werts) Wehtje, 44, Osceola, were Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, at the Kepner-Roberts Funeral Home in Osceola. Inurnment will be at a later date.
Cindee died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, at the Annie Jeffrey Health Center in Osceola from heart complications.
She was born June 15, 1958, to Howard and Eleanor (Anderson) Werts at Santa Barbara, Calif. Her father and stepmother, Jan, were former residents of Lexington, where Howard was a Dawson County deputy sheriff.
On May 3, 1980, she married Steven R. Wehtje at Lincoln. They had been residents of Osceola for the past six years.
She was a member of the Osceola Lions Club and had been a waitress in Osceola.
Survivors include her husband of 22 years, Steve, of Osceola; two daughters, Brandi and Stacy Wehtje, both of Lincoln; her stepmother, Jan, Coos Bay, Ore.; one sister, Julie Becker, Beaver City; one brother, Donovan Werts, North Bend, Ore.; and one step-brother, David Teachman of Canada; nieces and nephew, Lisa, Eric and Emily, all of Beaver City.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, and grandparents, Julien and Hazel Regouby.
Kepner-Roberts Funeral Home of Osceola was in charge of arrangements.

RALPH CARL DOWNIN
Callaway

Funeral services for Ralph Carl Downin, 90, of Callaway will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, at the United Methodist Church in Broken Bow, with the Dr. Charles Spence officiating assisted by the Rev. Todd Philipsen. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.
He died Nov. 29, 2002, at the Callaway Good Samaritan Center.
Ralph was born Nov. 30, 1911, at Lodi to Albert Bruce and Milly Ethel (Jones) Downin. He grew up on the family farm in the Lodi area, northwest of Oconto and attended school through the 10th grade at the lower Lodi school and graduated from Callaway High School in 1932.
On Dec. 29, 1940, he married Maxine Jane May at the home of her parents north of Callaway. To this union was born a daughter, Mary Ann. They farmed in the Lodi community until 1961, when they moved to Ogallala, where they operated a motel for the next one and a half years. They returned to Custer County and lived in Broken Bow for the next 35 years, where he was self-employed in the appliance repair business.
Ralph was a member of the United Methodist Church, Broken Bow Garden Club, and Benevolent Protective Order of Elks and was involved in the Custer County Civil Defense organization. He enjoyed working with electronics and had a HAM radio license. He played recreational baseball in his younger days and was an avid fisherman and bowler.
He and his wife enjoyed many fishing and camping trips in their motor home throughout their retirement years. He suffered a stroke in 1996 and has resided in the Callaway Good Samaritan Center the past six years.
Survivors include his wife of Callaway; a daughter, Mary Ann (Glenn) Bazata of Ogalalla; a brother, Morris of Oconto; three grandchildren, Brian of Cozad, Alison of Omaha and Brenton of Ogallala; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorials are suggested to the Callaway Good Samaritan Center or Broken Bow Fire and Rescue.
Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow is in charge of arrangements.

GERALD G. STRUEMPLER
Oconto

Funeral services for Gerald G. Struempler, 61, of rural Oconto will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, at the Berryman Funeral Home Chapel in Cozad, with the Rev. Steve Berke officiating. Burial will be in the Christ Lutheran Cemetery northeast of Cozad.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, Dec. 4, at the Berryman Funeral Home in Cozad.
He died Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, at his home.
Gerald was born Dec. 1, 1940, at Cozad to Frederick and Minnie (Schwarze) Struempler. He attended Sunnyside District 211 rural school and graduated from Cozad High School in 1958. He had lived, ranched and farmed on the same home site since 1948.
He was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association. He enjoyed attending farm and cattle sales and enjoyed horses. He was baptized in the First Lutheran Church at Buffalo and confirmed in the American Lutheran Church in Cozad.
Survivors include three sisters, Elsie (LeRoy) Cyriacks of Gothenburg, Geraldine (Gary) Mitchell of Bella Vista, Ark., and Adele (Paul) Chandler of Plymouth, Minn.; five brothers, Henry (Arlene) of Berwyn, Herbert (Elsie) of Oconto, Erich of Rockford, Ill., Ted (Norma) of Cozad and Ronald of Oconto; many nieces, nephews, great and great-great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, William and Fritz, and three sisters, Edna, Erna and Lottie.
Memorials are suggested to the Christ Lutheran Cemetery Memorial Fund.

LAWRENCE R. KIRSCHNER
Hastings

Mass of Christian burial for Lawrence R. Kirschner, 75, Hastings, will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Elm Creek, with Fr. Mark Maresh officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Elm Creek.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. with Rosary at 7:30 p.m., today, Dec. 4, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Elm Creek. Also, visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
Lawrence died Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
He was born July 12, 1927, in Buffalo County, near Pleasanton, to Rudolph and Isadora (Payne) Kirschner. He graduated from Haxtun High School, Haxtun, Colo., in 1944.
He served in the United States Army Air Corp during World War II from 1945-1946. After his discharge, he returned to the family farm in Haxtun, Colo.
On Sept. 11, 1948, he married Caroline Micheli in Holyoke, Colo. He earned his pilot's license and joined the Civil Air Patrol in 1958. In 1959, the family relocated to a farm in New Plymouth, Idaho. Here, he was a volunteer fireman and a volunteer for the Civil Air Patrol.
The family returned to Ravenna in 1969. He farmed in the Lexington and Benkelman areas before moving to Hastings from Kearney. They have resided in Hastings for the last six years.
He was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Kearney, American Legion and Knights of Columbus, both in Haxtun, Colo.
Survivors include his wife, Caroline of Hastings; three sons, Darrel Kirschner, Elm Creek, Norman Kirschner, Hastings, Daniel Kirschner, Dodge; four daughters, Karen Alex, Greenwood, S.C., Kathleen Fisher, Elm Creek, Diana Conway, Lincoln, and Alecia Bramman, Hastings; 18 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; four sisters, Leona Brekel, Sterling, Colo., Dorothy Kuntz, Haxtun, Colo., Francis Kuntz and Alma Kuntz, both of Loveland, Colo.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant son and infant sister.
A memorial has been established.

DOROTHY MORTON
Wood River

Services for Dorothy Morton, 84, Wood River, will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002, at the First Presbyterian Church in Wood River, with Rev. Karen Kennerly officiating. Burial will be at the Kearney Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m., today, Dec. 4, at the Apfel-O'Brien-Straatmann Funeral Home in Wood River. |
Dorothy died Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
She was born May 4, 1918, in Kearney to Howard and Mabel (Detamore) Smithney.
She married Virgil Morton on May 2, 1937, in Kansas. They lived in Kearney, later moving to Wichita, Kan., then to Omaha and later back to Kearney.
From Kearney they moved to Johnson Lake, where they owned and operated Sportmans Paradise for 25 years. They then moved to Shelton, where she co-owned and operated Morton's Commission Shop in Kearney. Then they moved to Wood River, where she worked at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home as a cook.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed crafts, oil painting, cooking for her family and she was an avid Nebraska football fan.
Survivors include three daughters, Marilyn Fyfe of Grand Island, Carol Little of Wood River and Linda (Dick) Carlson of Grand Island; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Gloria (Dick) Elm, Pueblo, Colo.; and many nieces and nephews.
Her husband, Virgil, a baby brother and a son-in-law, Harry Little, preceded her in death.
Memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church.
Apfel-O'Brien-Straatmann Funeral Home of Wood River is in charge of arrangements.

RUTH E. KUGLER
Eustis

Services are pending at Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington for Ruth E. Kugler, 92, of Eustis. She died Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at the Tri-County Hospital in Lexington.

Lexington

Kyatana Lili Rascon Salinas, infant daughter of Cesar Rene Rascon Salinas and Chandra Dawn Rascon, Lexington, was stillborn Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at the Cozad Community Hospital in Cozad.
Services are pending at Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington.

FRANK POSUSTA
Lincoln, Kan.

Funeral services for Frank Posusta, 92, of Lincoln, Kan., were Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Sylvan Grove, Kan.
Frank died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003. He was born on Nov. 1, 1910, in Chicago, Ill., to Frank and Marie Posusta.
He was a farmer and operated Frank's Pump Service. He was a simple, humble man. Love of God, wife and family, working the soil, repairing pumps and windmills and taking a spin around the dance floor were the basic elements of Frank's life and he enjoyed life to its fullest.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Helen, of Lincoln, Kan.; five daughters, Lorraine (Gary) Charles, Topeka, Kan., Lois (Bob) Swisher, Salina, Kan., Jolene (Leroy) Janssen, Sylvan Grove, Kan., Esther (Don) White, Ashland, Kan., and Donna (Jerry) Carver, Bella Vista, Ark.; two sisters, Sylvie Echer, Lucas, Kan., and Alice Dishman of Lexington; one brother, Charlie Florian, Wilson, Kan.; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, stepfather, Jerry Florian, sister, Emma Malir, and granddaughter, Karen (White) Mages.
Memorials may be made to Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Sylvan Grove, Kan.
Rodrick and Minear Funeral Home of Sylvan Grove was in charge of arrangements.
