BROKEN BOW -- Ernest Ivan Hunkins, 83, of Broken Bow, died Sunday at the Jennie Melham Medical Hospital. He had lived at Jennie Melham Medical Heritage Hall.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Rhoad Funeral Chapel in Sargent. Pastor Wayne Rouse will officiate. Burial will be in the Arcadia Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The casket will be closed at the services.
Memorials are suggested to the Arcadia Fire and Rescue Units.
Jane Kinney
ST. PAUL -- Jane Kinney, 99, of St. Paul died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999, at Heritage Living Center in St. Paul.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul. The Rev. Melanie Adams will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery at Scotia.
Visitation will be before services on Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Salvation Army.

ST. PAUL Norma M. Merchant, 68, of St. Paul, died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999, at the Howard County Community Hospital in St. Paul.

Mary Jane Morgan
ALBION -- Mary Jane Morgan, 75, of Albion, died Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, at Boone County Health Center in Albion.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the United Church of Christ in Albion. The Revs. Mary Avidano and Rich Graess will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery at Albion.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion.
She was born
Feb. 10, 1924, at O'Neill to Oliver and Ruth (Lichty) Morgan. She received her elementary education at O'Neill Public Schools and graduated from O'Neill High School in 1942.
In August of 1942 she married Fred Colfack at Taylor, Texas. They lived in Ewing and moved to Albion in 1953.
She attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and graduated in 1968 with a degree in elementary education. She taught at several Boone County Schools including rural School Districts 78, 21 and 44 and in the Cedar Rapids, Petersburg and Albion High Schools. She retired from teaching in the mid-80s. She then worked as an Electrolux vacuum cleaner distributor.
She was a member of the United Church of Christ of Albion. She was also a member of the Nebraska Education Association.
Survivors include two sons, Brian of Circleville, Ohio and Chuck of Greeley; one daughter, Peggy (Mrs. Bernard) Wilson of Norfolk; five grandchildren; one sister, Thelma Hendrick of Omaha; and a special friend, Gordon Auten of Cedar Rapids.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Richard.
John Potrzeba
ORD -- John E. Potrzeba, 91, of Ord died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at the Valley County Nursing Home in Ord.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Ord. Burial will be in the Ord Catholic Cemetery. The Rev. Jim Warner will officiate.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8:30 p.m., with a rosary at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday at Ord Memorial Chapel.
Memorials are suggested to St. Mary's School or the donor's choice.
Mr. Potrzeba was born
on June 20, 1908, in the Michigan Township of Valley County to Mike and Anna (Bower) Potrzeba. He grew up on the family farm and graduated from Fairplay Country School. He later graduated from the St. Paul Business College.
He married Helen Micek on April 18, 1934, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Elyria. They farmed for 60 years, then retired and moved to Ord in 1995.
Mr. Potrzeba was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church; served on the Michigan Township and Fairplay school boards; was director of the Ord Co-op Oil and Farmers Home Administration boards; and a member of the Twin Loups Reclamation and Irrigation District boards for more than 30 years.
His farm received the first irrigation water from the Calamus Dam on June 24, 1987.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Vernon Potrzeba of Elyria; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a sister, Victoria Secora of Omaha; and a brother, Anton Potrzeba of Gibbon.
He was preceded in death by a son, Richard; a grandson; two brothers, Henry and Edward Potrzeba; and two sisters, Helen Augustyn and Mary Iwanksi.
Alice Smith
ORD -- Alice Smith, 93, of Ord died Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, at the Valley County Nursing Home in Ord.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Ord Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Jim Miller will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel.

Rex Wagner
BURWELL -- Rex F. Wagner, 91, of Burwell died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999 at Valley County Nursing Home in Ord.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Burwell with the Rev. Greg Volzke officiating. Burial will be in the Cottonwood Cemetery in Burwell. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell. Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Wagner was born
on May 22, 1908 in Archer to Frank F. and Grace V. (Willoughby) Wagner. When he was four his parents moved to a farm two miles west of Burwell. Two years later they moved back to Archer. In 1915 the family moved to Burwell where they lived in a sod home.
Mr. Wagner graduated from Burwell High School in 1926, and later graduated from the school of journalism at the University of Nebraska in 1931, and went to work for the Lincoln Star Journal. The depression soon ended that job, and Mr. Wagner returned to Burwell where he worked at whatever jobs were available.
In 1942 he was drafted into the Army. He spent nearly a year in Australia before being transferred to the New Guinea area where preparations for the invasion of the Philippines were being made. He was assigned to a unit that freed American prisoners being held by the Japanese. He also witnessed the signing of the peace treaty on Sept. 2, 1942.
On Nov. 11, 1945 he was discharged from the Army and returned home, where he resumed his newspaper career. He worked at several Arizona newspapers, was telegraph editor of the Riverside City Enterprise for seven years and editor of the Juneau Alaska Empire for two years.
In 1958, Mr. Wagner returned home to help his mother care for his sick father and his sister. After his father's death he helped his brother in managing the Burwell Livestock Market and was the bookkeeper there for 25 years before retiring when the business was sold.
His interests included nature and the conservation of natural resources. He was a member of the Sierra Club, The Wilderness Society, Greenpeace, The Audubon Society, University of Nebraska Alumni, Veterans of Foreign War and American Legion. He attended church at the Congregational Church and the Lutheran Church.
Survivors include one sister, Naomi (Mrs. Bob) Lenon of Patagonia, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Bernard and Mark Wagner; and one sister, Helen Wagner.
Philomena Diers
FREMONT -- Philomena C. Diers, 93, of Fremont died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, in Fremont.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday a St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Fremont. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Fremont.
Visitation will be one hour before services Tuesday at the church.
Moser Memorial Chapel of Fremont is in charge of arrangements.
She is survived by two sons, Donald C. Diers of Grand Island and Charles H. Diers of Fremont; one daughter, Joan (Mrs. Jim) Lee of DeForest, Wis.; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Joseph Geren
ANITA, Iowa -- Joseph Jay Geren, 56, of Anita, Iowa, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at Nebraska Methodist Hospital in Omaha.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Anita. The Rev. Paul Mahowald and Deacon Fred Cornwall will officiate. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in St. Michael's Cemetery at Central City.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday in the St. Michael's Catholic Church Parish Hall in Central City.
Mr. Geren was born
on Feb. 3, 1943, at Hastings to Rubin and Della (McGowen) Geren. The family moved to Central City, where he grew up. He graduated from Central City High School in 1961.
He attended St. Benedict's College in Kansas and then Kearney State College. He worked for Central Bank in Central City for 18 years, starting as a teller and ending as a vice president.
He served in the Nebraska National Guard for six years.
He married Judy Stiets in 1978. They moved to Nebraska City, where he was vice president of the Otoe County Bank. He was president of the Sedgewick County Bank in Julesburg, Colo., for four years. He then served as vice president of the Fullerton First National Bank before moving to Anita in August 1993. He had been manager of the Rolling Hills Bank in Anita since then.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, enjoyed golfing, Lionel trains and "Cars."
He organized and served as president of the Sertoma Club in Central City, both Lions and Rotary clubs, chambers of commerce in the towns where he lived and was a board member of CASCO in Cass County.
Survivors include his wife; five sons, Shane Stites of Rockaway, Ore., Scott Geren of Omaha, Craig Geren of Fort Collins, Colo., Shad Stites of Talent, Ore., and Curt Geren of Fort Collins, Colo.; one daughter, Heidi (Mrs. Mike) Catlett of Atlantic, Iowa; four grandchildren; two brothers, Pat Geren of Central City and Tom Geren of Bellevue; and two sisters, Mary (Mrs. Paul) Saggau of Arlington and Janice (Mrs. Jerry) Grey of Loveland, Colo.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
