Vance Jeffres
BURWELL -- Vance Ernest Jeffres, 70, of Burwell died Monday, July 17, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Burwell. The Rev. Bernard Berger will officiate. Following cremation there will be a private family burial.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell.
Memorials are suggested to the Burwell Community Fund.
Mr. Jeffres was born
June 15, 1930, to Sam and Alta (Oberkotter) Jeffres at Burwell. He grew up south of Burwell, where he attended Valley County District 56 grade school. He graduated from Burwell High School in 1946.
He was a partner with Richard Burnham in a feed store in Burwell for several years. In 1948 and 1949 he worked for the State of Nebraska Department of Roads.
On Dec. 10, 1950, he married Marjoria Burnham in Burwell and they moved west of town. In the 1950s he drove a truck for Richard Burnham while continuing his farming operation. In 1961 he drove a truck for Richard Burnham while continuing his farming operation. In 1961 the family moved east of Burwell where he lived until his death, expanding his current farming/ranching operation.
He enjoyed deer hunting and road trips to look at the countryside. He was a member of the Ord Elks for 30 years. He rose early every morning to feed cattle. Tending to his crops and livestock was what he dearly loved. He looked forward to Sunday mornings when all his family gathered for Mrs. Jeffres' chocolate chip cookies and coffee. His sons, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were his greatest joy.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Lee, Lex and Lin, all of Burwell; one sister, Doris Pishna of Burwell; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Lois Erington.
Sterling Kouba
KEARNEY -- Sterling L. Kouba, 76, of Kearney died Thursday, July 20, 2000, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church in Kearney. The Revs. Ron Roemmich and Ron Harris will officiate. Burial will be in the Kearney Cemetery.
Military rites at the grave will be provided by the Kearney American Legion Post 52 and the Kearney VFW Post 759.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary or prior to services Monday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church or the Kearney Volunteer Fire Department.
Mr. Kouba was born
Oct. 23, 1923, in Lincoln to William F. and Harriet (French) Kouba. He moved to Kearney in 1932 and graduated from Kearney High School in 1941.
He worked as a relief agent for the Union Pacific Railroad until entering the U.S. Navy in 1943 where he served during World War II until being discharged in 1946. After the war he worked at the ordnance plant in Sidney, then returned to Kearney.
He married C. Eunice Gifford on Feb. 25, 1948, in Kearney. He again worked for the Union Pacific Railroad as a yard clerk then as freight agent at the Kearney office. He worked for the railroad for 43 years.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Kearney and was a member of the Kearney Elks Lodge 984, American Legion Post 52 and the VFW Post 759.
Mr. Kouba was active for many years with the Kearney Volunteer Fire Department where he had served as president and for many years was the treasurer.
He was also a member of the Union Pacific Oldtimers Club 16 and the Union Pacific Junior Oldtimers Club.
Survivors include a son, David Kouba of North Platte; a brother, Stanley Kouba of Omaha; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 1998 and one daughter.
Alvin Markvica
ORD -- Alvin Markvicka, 69, of Ord died Thursday, July 20, 2000, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Heartland Assembly of God Church at Ord. The Rev. Lonnie Carpenter will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Ord Memorial Chapel.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Lanette Wells
MADISON -- Lanette S. Wells, 37, of Madison, formerly of Grand Island, died Thursday, July 20, 2000, at Immanuel Hospital in Omaha after a long battle with cancer.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at All Faiths Funeral Home in Grand Island. The Rev. Raymond M. Kosmicki will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Wood River.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with a Christian wake service at 7 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the family.
Florence McKnight
KINGMAN, Ariz. -- Florence McKnight, 93, of Kingman, Ariz., formerly of Cairo and Shelton, died Thursday, July 13, 2000, at her home.
Mrs. McKnight was cremated and her remains will be buried at the Shelton Cemetery at a later date.
Mrs. McKnight was born
April 9, 1907, near Cairo to Jerome and Lillie (Shoopman) Reed. She was a 1925 graduate of the Cairo High School.
She married Archie McKnight in June 1927 and they lived in Shelton for a number of years. She worked for the U.S. Navy Department for many years.
Survivors include a granddaughter, Gail Dyar of Phillips, Maine, raised by Mrs. McKnight; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Agnes (Mrs. Maurice) Wickersham of Grand Island; and a special caregiver niece, Audrey Delaet of Ravenna.
She was preceded in death by two daughters, Donna McKnight and Deanna Kephart; two brothers and two sisters.
Robert "Bob" Roggy
PLANT CITY, Fla. -- Robert "Bob" Roggy, 71, of Plant City, Fla., formerly of Grand Island, died Wednesday, July 19, 2000, at Brandon, Fla.
Wells Memorial Funeral Home of Plant City, Fla., is in charge of services.
Mr. Roggy was born
in Grand Island. He moved to Florida in 1989 from Omaha, where he was a retired fleet manager for AC Delco Division of General Motors.
He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church of Plant City. He was a member of the John J. Mercer Masonic Lodge of Omaha, Scotish Rite, Tangier Shrine Temple of Omaha and Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of Scottsbluff.
Survivos include his wife, Dorothea "Dottie" Roggy of Plant City; one son, Robert C. of Lake Worth, Fla.; one daughter Vicki Showell of Omaha; his mother, LaVern Maynard of Grand Island; one brother, Ronald Roggy of Greeley, Colo.; three sisters, Joan Kirkpatrick of Grand Island, Sharon Kilbosa of Iowa City, Iowa and Linda Fisher of Grand Island; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Lowell Cassell
ARCADIA -- Lowell D. Cassell, 62, of Arcadia died Saturday, July 15, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services are pending with Peters Funeral Home in Loup City.
Pauline Rama
BROKEN BOW -- Pauline D. Rama, 77, of Broken Bow, formerly of Merna, died Saturday, July 15, 2000, at Sandhills Manor Nursing Home in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tusday at United Methodist Church in Merna. The Rev. Doug Jones will officiate. Burial will be in Merna Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow. Memorials are suggested to the church.
Mrs. Rama was born
July 11, 1923, to Paul and Dora (Parker) McCaslin on the family farm in the Rose Valley area near Broken Bow. She grew up on that farm and attended Rose Valley rural school.She later graduated from Broken Bow High School.
She married Morris Walter Rama on Sept. 10, 1961, at Broken Bow. The couple lived on the Rama farm southwest of Merna. They retired from farming in 1981, and moved to Merna. She became a Sandhills Manor Nursing Home resident in June 1997. He died Jan. 28, 2000.
She was a member of United Methodist Church in Merna, United Methodist Women and West Table Extension Club.
She enjoyed crafts, painting, sewing, square dancing, playing cards and her nieces and nephews.
Survivors include one brother, Merle of Littleton, Colo.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, Virgil.
Ardella Baudendistel
Ardella (Thomas) Baudendistel, 88, of Grand Island died Friday, July 14, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services are pending with Kleine Funeral Home.
Johnny Weinert
Johnny Weinert, 83, of Grand Island died Thursday, July 13, 2000, at the St. Francis Hospital following cardiac arrest.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Revs. Don Larmore and Frank Hoelck will officiate. Burial will be at the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with a 7 p.m. rosary.
Memorials are suggested to the family or to the donor's choice.
Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Weinert was born
Dec. 5, 1916, to George and Bessie (Vincik) Weinert at St. Paul. He grew up and attended school in St. Paul and Ogallala. Later he worked on the Kingsley Dam in Ogallala.
He married Isabel Dorszynski on July 1, 1939, at St. Luke's Catholic Church in Ogallala. In 1942, he started working for the Geer Company. In 1945, the family moved to Grand Island. During the following 37 years, he was employed in construction as a carpenter and job superintendent by Geer Mauer which later became Geer Melkus Construction Company. Mr. Weinert retired in 1977.
He loved creating projects from wood and sharing them with others. In 1988, he was designated by Gov. Kay Orr as an admiral of the Great Navy of the State of Nebraska.
He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Jacque (Mrs. Jim) Brim of Longmont, Colo.; three grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Catherine Sheffield.
Sherman Smith
LAS VEGAS -- Sherman Dale Smith, 63, of Las Vegas, formerly of Grand Island, died Friday, July 14, 2000, in Las Vegas as the result of a car accident.
Services are pending with All Faiths Funeral Home.
Survivors include his wife, Susan, of Las Vegas; one son, Colin, of Omaha; one daughter, Stephanie Placzek of Grand Island; four grandchildren; one brother, Darrel of Ord; and one sister, Opal Schoemaker of Aurora, Colo.
