Lillie Swanson
NORFOLK -- Lillie May Swanson, 95, of Norfolk died Sunday, May 14, 2000, at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Gass-Haney Funeral Home. The Rev. David Patterson will officiate. Burial will be in Friend Cemetery at rural Genoa.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
Mrs. Swanson was born
on Nov. 27, 1904, at New Hampton, Mo., to Jacob and Effie Isabelle (Hogan) Bender. She grew up in the Ozarks.
She married Elmer Swanson on June 4, 1928, at Council Bluffs, Iowa. They lived on his father's farm near Monroe and later moved to Missouri to farm.
They moved to another farm near Monroe in the mid-1930s. They bought a farm near Rising City in 1944 and lived there until 1958, when they moved to Wagner's Lakes in Columbus. She worked at Behlen Memorial Hospital in the housekeeping/laundry department for many years before retiring in 1969. Mr. Swanson died in 1990.
Mrs. Swanson continued to live in Columbus. She moved to Fremont to live with her son Robert in 1995. She then lived with her daughter Jeanetta and son-in-law Gayle in Norfolk and later with her daughter Mildred and son-in-law Charles in Grand Island. She moved to Heritage of Belaire in Norfolk in 1999.
She enjoyed her parakeet Sweetie, gardening and houseplants, table games, reading and crocheting.
Survivors include a son, Robert A. Swanson of Fremont; two daughters, Jeanetta (Mrs. Gayle) Janssen of Norfolk and Mildred (Mrs. Charles) Meyers of Grand Island; 20 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Elmo of Swan, Iowa; and a stepbrother, Leo Lukes of Des Moines, Iowa.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Gloria Gray; one son, Fredrick Swanson; three great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; three brothers, Orland, Robert and Virgil Bender; and a sister, Marie Hicks.
Albertha Cain
WHITEWATER, Kan. -- Albertha Marie Cain, 83, of Whitewater, Kan., formerly of Kansas City, Kan., and Sherman County, died Saturday, May 13, 2000, at Wheat State Manor in Whitewater, Kan.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Gabriel's Church in Hazard. The Rev. Loren Pohlmeier will officiate. Burial will be in the Hazard Cemetery.
A Christian wake service will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
Rasmussen Mortuary of Ravenna is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Cain was born
on Jan. 27, 1917, at Loup City to John and Stella (Kaslon) Jurkiewicz. She was educated in Sherman County.
She married Elmer Cain on Aug. 6, 1938, in North Platte. The couple lived in Kansas City, Kan. Mrs. Cain worked as a lab technician for a pharmaceutical company.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, John of Topeka, Kan., and Rick of Louisburg, Kan.; one daughter, Mary Ellen Gray of Whitewater, Kan.; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Adeline Rasmussen and Lourine Nelson, both of Litchfield, and Delores Santero of Kansas City, Mo.
George McKenzie
HUTCHINSON, Kan. -- George Alexander McKenzie, 71, of Hutchinson, Kan., died Sunday, May 14, 2000, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, in Wichita.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Elliott Mortuary Chapel in Hutchinson with the Rev. Jim Autrey officiating. Burial will be in the Inman Cemetery with military rites by the Fort Riley Honor Guard.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at the mortuary.
Memorials are suggested to the Kidney Dialysis Foundation or the donor's choice.
Mr. McKenzie was born
on June 21, 1928, in Grand Island to Lewis and Nora McKenzie.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a retired customer service representative for the Morton Salt Co. in Hutchinson.
He married Ilo B. Alger on Dec. 1, 1980, in Hutchinson.
He was a member of American Legion Post 1 in Omaha, Loyal Order of Moose 982 and Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 2550, both of Hutchinson.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Steve McKenzie, Bob McKenzie and Brian McKenzie, all of Omaha; two daughters, Kathy Dougall of Glendale, Ariz., and Nancy Lungren of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; one stepson; two stepdaughters; 16 grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and one sister, Lora Findley of Grand Island.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Peggy; three brothers, Angus, Harvey and Lewis McKenzie; and two sisters, Myrtle and Cecile.
Marietta Morris
Marietta Morris, 83, of Grand Island died Thursday, May 11, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Leo's Catholic Church. The Rev. Jack Rademacher will officiate. Private graveside services will take place following the service.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday with a rosary at 7 p.m. at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the church or the Stuhr Museum Foundation.
Livingston-Sondermann Funeral home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Morris was born
on Dec. 3, 1916, in Saronville to Francis Leo and Clara (Kernan) McLaughlin.
She grew up in Hastings and graduated from Hastings High School. After graduation, she worked for Kernan Shoe Company in North Platte. She subsequently moved to Grand Island and became one of the owners of the Kernan Shoe Company on Third Street.
She married Virgil Morris on June 5, 1952, in Grand Island.
She enjoyed cooking.
She was a member of St. Leo's Catholic church.
Survivors include one daughter, Pamela Morris-Stump of Grand Island; three sons, Robert of Meeteetse, Wyo., Stephen of Lincoln and John of Grand Island; eight grandchildren; and one brother, Francis Leo Patrick McLaughlin of Grand Island.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1985 and one sister, Josephine McLaughlin Costello.
Nettie Ruff
Nettie L. Ruff, 81, of Grand Island died Wednesday, May 10, 2000, at the Skilled Nursing Unit of St. Francis Memorial Health Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Gollaher Chapel of Trinity United Methodist Church. The Rev. George Wheat will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to St. Francis Hospice or the donor's choice.
Mrs. Ruff was born
April 16, 1919, at Grand Island to Chris and Lena (Wagner) Niemoth. She grew up on a farm north of Grand Island and attended District 7 West School.
She married Edward J. "Eddie" Ruff on Jan. 30, 1931, at Grand Island.
She worked as a bar maid for 65 years. She worked with her family at 4th Street Tavern. In 1957 she and her husband became the proprietors of Ed and Net's Bar. Mr. Ruff died in December 1991. She sold the business in 1995.
She was a member of the Liederkranz, Saddle Club, Platt-Duetsche and a 36-year member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
She enjoyed baking.
Survivors include two sons, Gary and Ken, both of Grand Island; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by one sister, Delores Petzoldt and a granddaughter.
Dorothy Schneider
Dorothy Mae Schnider, 74, of Grand Island, formerly of Atkinson, died Tuesday, May 9, 2000, at Chrysalis Lutheran Home in Gand Island.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Atkinson. The Rev. Luke Steffes will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery at Atkinson.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at Seger Funeral home in Atkinson. There will be a 7 p.m. christian wake service.
Mrs. Schneider was born
Feb. 27, 1926, at Emmet to Edward and Dora Mae (Andrus) Brandt.
Se married Laurence Schneider on Oct. 16, 1946, at Stuart. They lived in Atkinson from 1946 until 1960 when they moved to Valentine where they lived until 1980. While in Valentine she worked at several businesses until becoming owner of a Mode 'O' Day franchise for several years before retiring.
Mr. Schneider died in 1983 and she moved to Phillips to be closer to family members. She moved to the Chrysalis Lutheran Home in Grand Island in 1997.
Survivors include four daughters, Rita (Mrs. Tom) Goodwin of Phillips, Donna (Mrs. Wayne) Palmer of Wheatland, Wyo., Kay (Mrs. Steve) Allen of Norfolk and Diane (Mrs. James) Engel of Waverly; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one brother, LeRoy "Jake" Brandt of Banks, Ore. and a step brother, Bob Mick of Wyoming.
In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by one son.
James Adam Jr.
RAVENNA -- James William Adam Jr., 67, of Ravenna, died Wednesday, May 10, 2000, at his home south of Ravenna.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Ravenna. The Rev. Rod Pruss will officiate. Burial will be in St. Wenceslaus Cemetery south of Ravenna. A Christian wake service will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the church.
Rasmussen Mortuary of Ravenna is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Adam was born
March 11, 1983, to James and Katherine (Chramosta) Adam at their home south of Ravenna. He lived his entire life within eight miles of his home. He graduated from Ravenna High School in 1951.
He married Marilyn Joyce of Giltner on June 18, 1959, in Hastings.
Much of his life was spent farming and milking cows. He received the F.F.A. State Farmer Award in 1951. He was the youth member of the State Farm Bureau and President of the Buffalo County Farm Bureau. He also served on the State Dairy Review Board for many years. He also served on the local 777 Musicians Association for many years. He was a 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus member for over 40 years.
He started playing drums and trumpet in dance bands while in high school and continued until death. He organized the Star Duster Band in the 1950s and later the Adam Family Band.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Deborah Adam of St. Charles, Mo. and Catherine Steele of Osceola; two granddaughters; and one brother, William of Ravenna.
He was preceded in death by an infant sister.
Joyce Bartu
COMSTOCK -- Joyce M. Bartu, 86, of Comstock, died Monday, May 8, 2000, at Memorial Hospital in Seward.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Comstock Methodist Church. The Rev. Mark Christ will officiate. Burial will be in Douglas Grove Cemetery at Comstock.
Visitation will be at 1 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Rhoad Funeral Home in Sargent.
Memorials are suggested to the Comstock Methodist Church or the Comstock Flower Garden Club.
Mrs. Bartu was born
Dec. 17, 1913, in Comstock to John J. and Agnes Maude (Donahue) Havlik. She attended school in Comstock, graduating in 1930. After graduation she was a clerk in the Wescott-Gibbons-Bragg Store in Comstock.
She married Adolph E. Bartu April 2, 1934. In the early 1950s, she taught school while attending Kearney State College. She taught rural schools and Sargent Public Schools. On Aug. 14, 1961, she was installed as the postmistress of Comstock until December 1990.
She was a member of the Methodist Church in Comstock, Comstock Community Club and was instrumental in establishing the Comstock Senior Citizens Center and she was a past member of the PEO and the Ord Does.
She was a member of the Western Fraternal Life Association and the National League of Postmasters. She collected antiques, attended auctions, did gardening, playing cards and traveling.
Survivors include one son, Bryce Bartu of Seward; one daughter, Maxine (Mrs. Dennis) Brass of Comstock; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and three step great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Vera Marie Bartu; two sisters, Vera Leui and Sylvia Gibbons; and and two infant brothers.
