Maxine Brugh
Maxine Brugh, 76, of Grand Island died Tuesday, April 18, 2000, at Riverside Lodge.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The Rev. James Keyser will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
Mrs. Brugh was born
on Nov. 17, 1923, at Albion to George and Marie (Sparks) Van Auker. She graduated from Albion High School.
She married Dr. E.A. Brugh on Nov. 30, 1945, in Omaha. They lived in Brooklyn, N.Y., and moved to Grand Island in 1948. They lived in Cheyenne, Wyo., from 1950 to 1952 and then returned to Grand Island. Dr. Brugh died on March 22, 1985.
Mrs. Brugh was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, St. Francis Medical Center Auxiliary, Riverside Golf Club, the Saddle Club and the Liederkranz.
Survivors include a son, George Brugh of York; a daughter, Cindy (Mrs. Steve) Bakk of Georgetown, Texas; and six grandchildren.
Betty Frohling
Betty Frohling, 72, of Grand Island died Wednesday, April 19, 2000, at Lakeview Rehab/Nursing Center.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Presbyterian Cemetery in Campbell.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mrs. Frohling was born
on Aug. 10, 1927, at Campbell to Herman and Otelia (Grams) Bartels. She grew up and was educated in Campbell, graduating from Campbell High School in 1945. She then taught first through eighth grades in a country school west of Campbell.
She married Dallas Frohling on Dec. 6, 1947, at Campbell. They lived through most of their marriage in Grand Island, where she worked at Dreisbach's for 16 years. She then worked for Holiday Inn until 1988, when declining health prevented her from working.
She enjoyed sewing and gardening.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Phyllis (Mrs. Harold) Dreher of Lincoln and Nancy (Mrs. William) Roberts of Howells; two sons, Robert of Lincoln and Tom of Loveland, Colo.; 13 grandchildren; and one sister, Ruby Trambly of Hastings.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Lloyd Bartels.
Lorrayne Stolle
Lorrayne A.M. Stolle, 83, of Grand Island died Tuesday, April 18, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Messiah Lutheran Church. The Rev. Douglas Stensby will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., with the family greeting friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mrs. Stolle was born
on Nov. 26, 1916, in Hall County to August and Mary (Nietfeld) Wilhelmi. She grew up on a farm near Grand Island and attended District 18 School. She moved to town and did housework for a while.
She married Alfred C. Stolle on June 9, 1940, at Grand Island. She worked for Model Laundry, worked for Buttercrust Bakery for 20 years and checked coats and sold concessions at Glovera Ballroom. She then worked for Jake's Bake Shop at Five Points.
She and her husband purchased that location in 1970 and operated it as Stolle Bakery. They later opened another location at Fourth and Eddy streets. They eventually moved the Five Points operation to Webb Plaza. They retired from the business in 1986.
Mrs. Stolle received various awards for the bakery business and served on the Nebraska Bakers Association board of directors for four years.
She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Saddle Club and Platt-Duetsche and a past member of the Nebraska Bakers Association and Retail Bakers of America.
Survivors include one son, Jack Stolle of Grand Island; two daughters, JoAnn (Mrs. Lee) Culbert of Grand Island and Elaine (Mrs. Tom) Wlaschin of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Her husband died on April 24, 1990. She was also preceded in death by five sisters, Ida Stoltenberg, Ella Nietfeld, Olga Koch, Mary Tagge and Frieda Wilhelmi; and three brothers, William and Edward Wilhelmi and an infant brother.
'Ben' Moderow
CENTRAL CITY -- Melbourne "Ben" Moderow, 75, of Central City, formerly of Marquette, died Tuesday, April 18, 2000, at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City.
Joint services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Higby Mortuary in Aurora for "Ben" and Virginia Moderow. The Rev. Herbert Schutte will officiate. Burial will be in the Aurora Cemetery.
Mrs. Moderow died Sunday, April 16, 2000.
Mr. Moderow was born
on March 21, 1925, at Polk to Erwin and Emilie (Weymuth) Moderow. He grew up in Aurora and graduated from Aurora High School.
He married Virginia May Vinkenberg on Feb. 11, 1945, at Freidensau Lutheran Church. They operated a grocery store in Marquette for 20 years. He then went to work for Swift and Co. in Grand Island as a meat cutter.
He enjoyed fishing, camping, baseball and Husker football.
Survivors include two sons, Bob of Hastings and Ron of Omaha; two daughters, Pat (Mrs. Ron) King of Grand Island and Sue Polzkill of York; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three brothers, LeRoy of Addison, Ill., Kenneth of Grand Island and Willis of Marquette.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by one son, John; one daughter, Laurie; and three brothers, Eugene, Hillard and Roger.
Mary Ware
MONTROSE, W.Va. -- Mary A. Ware, 55, of Montrose, W.Va., a native of Hershey, died Saturday, April 15, 2000, at University Hospital in Morgantown, W.Va.
She was cremated. Services were on Tuesday in Elkins, W.Va. Further services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Hershey United Methodist Church. Burial of her cremains will be in Riverside Cemetery near Hershey.
Survivors include her mother, Florence G. Ware of North Platte; two sisters, Joyce Ware of East Aurora, N.Y., and Janet Ware Novotny of Grand Island; and one brother, John Ware of Glenwood, Iowa.
Lola Espersen
Lola P. Espersen, 71, of the Grand Island Veterans Home died Saturday, April 15, 2000, at the veterans home.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Kleine Funeral Home. The Rev. Donald Burger will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.
Mrs. Espersen was born
on July 18, 1928, at Hyannis to Pearl and Effie (Abbott) Cogill. She received her early education at District 2 School at Whitman and her high school education at the Nebraska School of Agriculture at Curtis. She graduated from beauty school in Grand Island. She worked at beauty shops in the Grand Island area.
She married Arnold Jess in 1949 at Boelus. They farmed in the Boelus area. Mr. Jess died in 1963.
She married Christian Espersen in 1975, and they lived in Doniphan. Mr. Espersen died in 1994.
Mrs. Espersen was a member of the Methodist faith and a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Doniphan. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting and crafts.
Survivors include two sons, Kevin Jess of Wood Lake and Douglas Jess of Great Falls, Mont.; five grandchildren; and one sister, Opal (Mrs. Bill) Fiscus of Lemoyne.
In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Karen.
Harold Linden
LITCHFIELD -- Harold Linden, 88, of Litchfield died Tuesday, April 18, 2000, at the Rose Lane Home in Loup City.
Services are pending with Rasmussen Mortuary in Ravenna.
Wanda Ropers
ST. PAUL -- Wanda May Sue Ropers, infant daughter of Katie S. Ropers, died at birth Friday, April 14, 2000, at the Howard County Community Hospital in St. Paul.
Private graveside services were Tuesday at the Evergreen Cemetery in Loup City. The Rev. Leon Zimmerman officiated.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Peters Funeral Home of Loup City was in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include her mother, Katie S. Ropers of Boelus; her father, Gary A. Evans of Alda; a sister, Alexis Ropers of Boelus; grandparents, Henry and Wanda Ropers of Rockville; and great-grandmother, Elva Nielsen of Anselmo.
'Larry' Sullivan
GILTNER -- William "Larry" Sullivan, 73, of Giltner died Monday, April 17, 2000, at St. Francis Skilled Care Center.
A special Holy Week funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rev. Don Larmore will officiate. Burial will be in Cedarview Cemetery at Doniphan.
Visitation will be from noon to 3 p.m. Friday at Kleine Funeral Home. Further visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., with a 7:30 p.m. rosary, Friday in the Jubilee Center, in the north part of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mr. Sullivan was born
on June 4, 1926, at Grand Island to William and Margaret (Nirmaier) Sullivan. He grew up on the family farm between Doniphan and Giltner. He graduated from Giltner High School and attended Creighton University for two years.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1944 to 1946. After his discharge, he came back to the Doniphan/Giltner area and farmed his entire life.
He married Peggy Hill-Ferguson on May 18, 1974, at Doniphan.
He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. He enjoyed reading, traveling, watching TV and attending his grandchildren's many school events.
Survivors include his wife; one stepson, Dana Ferguson of Grand Island; five stepdaughters, Jody (Mrs. Larry) Detweiler-Selzler, Shirley (Mrs. Dean) Carstens and Barbara (Mrs. Ron) McHugh, all of Grand Island, Gail West of Dallas and Ann Baker of Phillips; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Dennis Sullivan of Doniphan; and one sister, Tess Sobnosky of Youngstown, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret; and three brothers, Frank, Dave and Jim.
Kenneth Anderson
NORTH PLATTE -- Kenneth L. Anderson, 59, of North Platte, formerly of Ord, died Sunday, April 16, 2000, at his home after a bout with cancer.
Services will be Friday at First Christian Church in North Platte. Burial will be in the North Platte Cemetery.
Visitation will be from noon until 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Odean Funeral Home in North Platte.
Mr. Anderson was born
June 1, 1940, at Ord to Alvin and Katie (Christensen) Anderson. He attended Ord schools, and in 1954 moved with his family to Sidney.
Mr. Nelson had retired in late 1999, due to his failing health, from the Humane Society in North Platte, where he had been employed for many years.
Survivors include his wife, Donna; a son, Jerry of Hershey; three daughters, Cheryl Marquez of Big Springs, Charlene Lemmer of Pennsylvania and Tara Cobb of North Platte; 12 grandchildren; his mother, Katie Anderson of Sidney; two brothers, Ronald of Taylorsville, Utah and Alan of Sidney; and a sister, Joyce Heckel of Bayard.
He was preceded in death by his father.
