Harry Mogensen
ALBION -- Harry K. Mogensen, 71, died Saturday, April 8, 2000, at the Boone County Health Center in Albion.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. Vicar Art Helbig will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery, with military rites conducted by Dan Cox American Legion #44.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Levander Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids and 9 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church.
Mr. Mogensen was born
on February 16, 1929, in Chicago, Ill., to Dennard and Anna (Larsen) Mogensen. He grew up in Coon Rapids, Iowa, and graduated from Coon Rapids High School.
He served in the United States Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged on Oct. 5, 1952.
He married Opal Witt on May 17, 1951, at Ft. Belvior, Virginia. The couple lived near Cedar Rapids where they farmed. He also worked as an iron worker in Omaha for 17 years and owned and operated Ranch and Farm AgriSystems and was a Butler Dealer since 1975. He also worked as a truck driver and retired in the mid-1990s.
He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids as well as a member of Dan Cox American Legion Post #44.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Brian of Dows, Iowa, and Keith and Steven, both of Cedar Rapids; one daughter, Marlene (Mrs. Darrel) Timm of Neligh; two sisters, Linda (Mrs. John) Gorman of Millville, Calif., and Helen Stein of Loveland, Calif., and 14 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Phyllis Withers
LINCOLN -- Phyllis Withers, a former Grand Island resident, died Sunday at the Tabitha Home in Lincoln.
Services are pending with the Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.

Betty Becker
Betty M. Becker, 72, of Grand Island, died Saturday, March 25, 2000, at the Hamilton Manor in Aurora.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the United Congregational Church in Grand Island. The Rev. Lonnie Logan and the Rev. Vernon Rice will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the Diabetes Foundation, the Rebecca Lodge or the United Congregational Church.
Mrs. Becker was born
on July 27, 1927, in Grand Island to Rado and Anna (Dunkel) Richardson. At an early age she moved to Nowata, Okla. She later lived in California and Salt Lake City, Utah.
She married Clarance "Buddy" Becker on Aug. 27, 1944, in Grand Island. They lived on a farm near Chapman.
She worked at the Nebraska Veterans Home as a certified aide for nine years. The couple moved to Grand Island in 1974.
Her hobbies included sewing, making crafts, growing violets, and gardening. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-granddaughter.
She was a member of the United Congregational Church, Circle No. 2 at the church, the Platte-Duetsche auxiliary, Order of Eastern Star in Chapman, Rebecca Lodge, The Three Links, and the U.C.T. She was also a past president of the Eagles Auxiliary.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Ray of St. Edward and Lee Roy of Paxton; one daughter, Shelly (Mrs. Terry) Hooks of Reno, Nev.; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and one brother, Harvie Richardson of Pawnee, Okla.
Lorrel Branting
CLARKS -- Lorrel Ardell Branting, 86, of Clarks, died Saturday, March 25, 2000, at the Beverly Healthcare Lakeview Nursing Home in Grand Island.
He was cremated and there will be a family graveside service at a later date.
Solt Funeral Home in Central City is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Branting was born
in Clarks on Dec. 27, 1913, to Clifford and Iva (Beck) Branting. He attended school in Polk and graduated with the class of 1932.
He married Virginia Stuart Sept. 4, 1938. They lived most of their life in Clarks where they raised 15 children. He worked for the Union Pacific Railroad as a section man in Clarks for 38 years.
His biggest love was fishing.
Survivors include three sons, Donald of Clarks, Cecil of Idaho Springs, Colo., and Tom of Butte, Mont.; 10 daughters, Joan "Jody" (Mrs. Herman) Blake of Scranton, Pa., Kathleen (Mrs. Skip) Boruchin of Edmond, Okla., Lois (Mrs. Keith) Bergman of Craig, Pauline (Mrs. Dallas) Benson and Deb (Mrs. Alan) Smith, both of Butte, Mont., Diane Groetzinger of Hudson, Colo., Rosetta (Mrs. Marvin) Walker of Renton, Wash., Gwen (Mrs. Dale) Roher of Moldova, Russia, Pam (Mrs. Dru) Duering of Grand Island, Waunetta "Neta" (Mrs. Bob) Wright of David City; 34 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Frances Stromberg of Clarks, Annabelle Swanson of Polk, and Geraldine "Betty" Hancock of Omaha; and two brothers, Marvin "Cotton" of Polk and Gerald "Bobby" of Hastings.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 1997; one son Richard "Dickie"; one daughter, Lorrie; three grandchildren, Brad, Herman and Nicole; and three brothers, Willard, Maurice and Melvin "Silver."
John Furby
KEARNEY -- John C. Furby, 97, of Kearney, formerly of Amherst and Miller died Friday, March 24, 2000, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary in Kearney. The Rev. Dean Pohahl will officiate. Burial will be in the Kearney Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8:30 p.m. Monday and prior to service time Tuesday at the funeral home. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to SEM schools or the St. Lukes Good Samaritan Village.
Mr. Furby was born
April 17, 1902, to John and Ida (Middleton) Furby at their home in Boone County. He grew up and attended school in Ogallala and Miller. He attended the Grand Island School of Business.
He married Hazel A. Scott on Sept. 8, 1926, in Lexington. He worked at the Ordnance Plant in Sidney then moved to Miller.
He worked as a mechanic in Miller. Then he and his wife farmed at Odessa before moving northwest of Amherst where they farmed for 40 years. They retired and moved to Miller in 1978.
His wife died in 1981 and he moved to St. Lukes Good Samaritan Village in Kearney in 1998.
He attended the Miller United Methodist Church. At Christmas of 1998, the SEM third grade class adopted him as a grandparent. He also enjoyed woodworking.
Survivors include one son, Donald of Amherst; two daughters, Bonnetta Jameson of Amherst and Doris Blumanhourst of Cozad; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mabel Ott of Kearney.
He was preceded in death by his wife, five sisters and one brother.
Mary Gift
BROKEN BOW -- Mary E. Gift, 88, of Broken Bow, died Thursday, March 23, 2000, at Sandhills Manor Nursing Home in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Govier Brothers Chapel. The Rev. Doug Jones will officiate. Burial will be in the Custer Center Cemetery west of Broken Bow.
Visitation will be at the funeral home from 8 a.m. until service time Monday.
Memorials are suggested to Custer County Hospice.
Mrs. Gift was born
Oct. 17, 1911, near Broken Bow to Elmer and Melvina (Hillman) Wing. She attended District No. 263 country school.
She married Howard Gift on Aug. 14, 1929, in Broken Bow. The couple lived on a farm near Anselmo with his parents and continued to live there after the death of his parents. In 1969, they moved to a home in Broken Bow and later moved to Regency Place in Broken Bow. In 1987 they became residents of Sandhills Manor Nursing Home in Broken Bow.
She enjoyed embroidering and fancy work.
Survivors include one son, Duane of St. Charles, Mo.; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1990; one son, Russell; one grandson, Michael Gift and five half brothers.
Iva Helmkamp
BURWELL -- Iva Grace Helmkamp, 94, of Burwell, died Friday, March 24, 2000, at Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First Christian Church in Burwell. The Rev. Rolly Salts will officiate. Burial will be in Cottonwood Cemetery in Burwell.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell.
Memorials are suggested to the First Christian Church.
Veva McNeff
FULLERTON -- Veva E. McNeff, 90, of Fullerton, died Friday, March 24, 2000, at her home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Palmer Funeral Home. The Rev. Mary McQueen will officiate. Burial will be in the Fullerton Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
'Tiny' Shurigar
KENESAW -- E. Marion "Tiny" Shurigar, 71, of Kenesaw, died Thursday, March 23, 2000, in rural Heartwell.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Presbyterian Church in Kenesaw. Burial will be in the Kenesaw Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Jackson-Wilson Funeral Home in Kenesaw.
Memorials are suggested at the family's choice.
Mr. Shurigar was born
Nov. 13, 1928, on a farm north of Kenesaw to John and Mollye (Godwin) Shurigar.
He married Mildred Severance Sept. 23, 1952, in Minot, N.D.
He started harvesting with Herb Augustin in 1944 and hauled grain. In 1945, he worked out-of-state harvesting for Chub Augustin. In 1946, he worked out-of-state harvesting for Orville Armstrong.
In 1945, he and his brothers, Wilson, David, Edward and Frank started farming with their dad. The land acquired by the Shurigars is still owned by the family.
In 1955, Shurigar Custom Dirt Contracting was started. In 1958, Custom Grain Drying was started on the Shurigar farm. In 1959 through 1964, custom hauling was done for NC Seed. In 1960, David, Marion and Edward formed a corporation. He retired in 1999.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Kathy Hoffman of Kenesaw; one granddaughter; one great-granddaughter; one sister, Dorothy Hall of Grand Island; and one brother, Frank Shurigar of Kenesaw.
He was preceded in death by six brothers, infant John, Robert, Edward, Ivan, David and Wilson.
