Henry Gartner

HASTINGS -- Henry W. Gartner, 79, of rural Hastings died Tuesday, July 20, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hastings. The Rev. Kathleen Kasper will officiate. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery at Hastings.

Visitation will be until 9 p.m. Wednesday, from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 8 to 11 a.m. Friday at Brand-Wilson Mortuary in Hastings.

Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.

Mr. Gartner was born icon on Aug. 31, 1919, at Holstein to Henry H. and Fannie (Janssen) Gartner.

He married Lucille Albers on March 20, 1940. He started farming north of Trumbull in 1943 and moved to his present home in 1945. Mrs. Gartner died on Oct. 13, 1996.

Mr. Gartner was a member of First St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hastings. He had served on the District 48 school board for many years and was a member of the Knights of Pythias.

Survivors include four daughters, Janice (Mrs. Larry) Meyer of Hastings, Sandra (Mrs. Harvey) Buhr and Deborah (Mrs. Scott) Bonham, both of Doniphan, and Pam (Mrs. Joel) Palmer of Kearney; two sons, David and Edwin, both of rural Hastings; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Alma Woodward and Fannie Hill, both of Hastings, Luella Varah of Doniphan and Mary Alexander of Grand Island; and four brothers, Elmer of Hansen, Harold of Ayr, Everet of Manitou Springs, Colo., and Donald of Giltner.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

Bud Knight

ORD -- Charles "Bud" Oren Knight Jr., 63, of Ord died Monday, July 19, 1999, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Ord. The Rev. Bob Paulson will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Ord Memorial Chapel.

Memorials are suggested to the Eppley Cancer Center of Omaha or the family's choice.

Mr. Knight was born icon on Aug. 28, 1935, at Omaha to Charles Sr. and Effie Marguerite (Brazeal) Knight. He lived in Omaha until 1946, when the family moved to Papillion. He was a 1955 graduate of Papillion High School.

In his sophomore year of high school, he began working for John Hanson, learning the cattle and trucking business. He entered the National Guard in 1957 and served for six years.

He married Gloria Veskerna on Sept. 12, 1957, at Elkhorn. The couple lived in Waterloo for five years. They moved west of Ord in February 1965. Mr. Knight farmed for several years before establishing Knight Trucking in 1970. He continued to live near Ord and operate his business until his death.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Ord. He enjoyed outdoor cooking for family and friends.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Mark of Arcadia; two daughters, Denise (Mrs. Glen) Nelson of Ord and Lori (Mrs. Joe) McBride of Ainsworth; six grandchildren; three sisters, Darlene (Mrs. Carl) Corrado of Sevierville, Tenn., Dodie (Mrs. George) Leslie of Memphis and Jane (Mrs. Ken) Patrick of Labot, Ark.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Dorothy Eaton

GIG HARBOR, Wash. -- Dorothy J. Eaton, 67, of Gig Harbor, Wash., died June 2, 1999, at her home.

Services were on June 4 at Haven of Rest Memorial Park Garden.

Memorials are suggested to her family.

Mrs. Eaton was born icon on March 14, 1932, at Greeley to Lester and Celestia (Widmeyer) Bengel. She grew up in the Greeley area and graduated from the parochial school in Greeley.

She taught school in several areas of Nebraska and South Dakota.

She married Ralph Eaton

Survivors include five children, Timothy, Vikkie, Alden, Kerry and Donald; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; three sisters, Eileen Racicky of Rochester, Wash., and Doris Freeman and Helen Martens, both of Grand Island; and a brother, Lester of Spanaway, Wash.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Carol and Kathy; and two brothers, Robert and William.

Paul Hollister

NAPLES, Fla. -- Paul Edward Hollister, 58, of Naples, Fla., died July 14, 1999, at a nursing home in Naples following an extended illness.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Belgrade Main Cemetery in Belgrade with military rites.

Palmer Funeral Home of Fullerton is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy Lottman

GREEN VALLEY, Ariz. -- Dorothy MacKinnon Lottman, 80, of Green Valley, Ariz., formerly of Grand Island, died June 28, 1999.

She requested no memorial services be held. Burial will be in a family plot in Concordia, Kan.

Memorials are suggested to the Animal League of Green Valley.

Mrs. Lottman was born icon March 17, 1919, in Concordia, Kan. and spent her youth there, graduating from Concordia High School.

She moved to Grand Island and later to Fremont where she managed a shoe and clothing store.

In 1974, she moved to Green Valley to assist in establishing Mackaday Shoes shoe store in the Haven Mall.

She was manager of the store until the early 80's when she married Ray Lottman.

While manager of the Mackaday Store she was a member of the Business Womens Soroptomist Club.

She was an avid golfer and during her years in Nebraska was awarded many tournament trophies.

Survivors include her husband of Sahuarita Heights, Ariz. and her brother, Karl MacKinnon of Grand Island.

Lawrence Luth

UNION GAP, Wash. -- Lawrence Luth, 87, of Union Gap, Wash., formerly of Grand Island, died Tuesday, July 20, 1999, at Union Gap.

Military services are pending.

Bernice Ruff

BATON ROUGE, La. -- Bernice Wilhelmine Krambeck Ruff, 87, of Baton Rouge, formerly of Grand Island, died July 5, 1999, at the Regency Place Retirement Home.

Memorial services were July 7 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Baton Rouge. The Rev. Stanley Eckermann will officiate.

Additional memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Grand Island. The Rev. Joel Schroeder will officiate. Inurnment will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Boy Scouts of America Instrouma Area Council, 9644 Brookline Ave., Baton Rouge, La. 70809.

Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include a daughter, Deanne (Mrs. Mike) Moser of Baton Rouge; a son, Robert of Alexandria, Va.; a sister, Dorothy Brown of San Jose, Calif.; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willard Jay Ruff and a sister, Verde Marie Krambeck.

Robert Warnke

BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. -- Robert Leo Warnke, 71, of Bonita Springs, Fla., formerly of Albion, died Sunday, July 18, 1999, at Chatuge Regional Hospital in Hiawassee, Ga., of an apparent heart attack.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Zion Lutheran Church in Albion. The Rev. Brian Bergum will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery at Albion with military rites conducted by American Legion Post 162 of Albion.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion.

Mr. Warnke was born icon on May 1, 1928, in Battle Creek to Edward and Irene (Wright) Warnke. He attended rural Boone County schools in the Closter area.

He served in the U.S. Army from Jan. 9, 1947, to March 23, 1948.

He married Tena E. Saathoff on Oct. 29, 1948, in Columbus. They lived and farmed in the Albion area until 1953, when they moved to the Closter area east of Petersburg.

He owned and operated Warnke Construction Co. until 1973. He semiretired, and they moved to the Naples, Fla., area. Mr. Warnke did dirt construction for various construction firms in Florida and managed a gravel pit for several years.

He later worked for a construction company that developed golf courses. He retired in 1993 but still did odd jobs, helping neighbors. In 1993, they also began spending their summers in Hiawassee, Ga.

He served as treasurer of Zion Lutheran North Branch Church at rural Petersburg for many years. He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Naples, Fla.

Survivors include his wife; one sister, Margaret (Mrs. Orvan) Remmereid of St. Edward; and two brothers, Clyde Warnke of Riverside, Calif., and Eugene Warnke of Albion.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Fern Taylor; and two brothers, Wayne Warnke and an infant brother, Dwight.

Edward Manning

Edward F. Manning, 86, of Grand Island died Monday, July 17, 2000, at his home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Leo's Catholic Church. The Rev. Jack Rademacher will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary, Thursday at the church. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday.

Kleine Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mr. Manning was born icon on Aug. 31, 1913, to William and Mary (Buddecke) Manning. He attended school in St. Libory and helped on the family farm.

He married Bernadine C. Mans on Aug. 29, 1942, at Neosho, Mo. Mr. Manning served in the U.S. Army at Camp Crowder, Mo., and for four years with the engineers in Europe. After his discharge, he farmed the Mans farm near Osborne, Kan., and worked at the light plant during the day.

He later worked at Roy Cleaners and purchased half interest in the business before he moved with his wife to Denver for a short time. In 1952, they moved to Grand Island, where he worked for Model Laundry and Dry Cleaners.

He spent many weekends and vacations farming the Mans property, which he later purchased with another farm in Osborne, Kan.

Following his employment with Model Laundry and Dry Cleaners, Mr. Manning worked as a custodian for Grand Island public schools until his retirement.

Mr. Manning was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church.

Survivors include one son, Steven C. Manning of Grand Island; two granddaughters; and one sister, Crescentia Adler of Lone Tree, Colo.

He was preceded in death by his wife, four brothers and two sisters.
