Archie Thomas
Archie Thomas, 70, of Grand Island died Monday, July 10, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home at St. Paul. The Rev. Larry Lepper will officiate. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Monday at the Ft. McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell.
Visitation will be Monday prior to services at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Thomas was born
on June 3, 1930, at O'Donnell, Texas, to Henry and Maudie Thomas. He served in the U.S. Army from Jan. 10, 1956, to Oct. 24, 1957. He lived for most of his life in Colorado and Nebraska. He worked at McCain Foods in Grand Island as a security guard, at Norbest Turkey Processors in Gibbon and most recently at the Conoco gas station in Grand Island.
Survivors include his stepfather, Kenneth Kilgore of Midland, Texas; two sons, Randall of Aurora, Colo. and Rocky; one daughter, Regina of Parkerville, Texas.
Johnny Weinert
Johnny Weinert, 83, of Grand Island died Thursday, July 13, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center following cardiac arrest.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Revs. Don Larmore and Frank Hoelck will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church, with a 7 p.m. rosary.
Memorials are suggested to the family or donor's choice.
Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
'Jim' Wood
James A. "Jim" Wood, 65, of Grand Island, died Thursday, July 13, 2000, at the St. Francis Medical Center at Grand Island.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Trinity United Methodist Church in Grand Island. The Rev. Jim Keyser will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Grand Island.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday with the family receiving friends from 4 to 6 p.m. at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the United Veteran's Club.
Mr. Wood was born
Jan. 14, 1935, at Merrick County to Walter and Argylle (Schultz) Wood. He grew up and received his education in rural Merrick County and in Alda.
He entered the Army National Guard on Sept. 22, 1953, and transferred to the U.S. Army on Jan. 6, 1955. He was discharged Oct. 31, 1961.
While in the service he married Elinor J. Sinner on July 14, 1957, at Wood River. The couple lived all of their married life in Grand Island. He owned and operated Jim Wood and Son Trucking.
He was a member of Eagles Aerie No. 378 and a past member of the United Veteran's Club. He loved spending time with his family and dancing.
Survivors include his wife, Elinor; three daughters, Pam (Mrs. Bob) Woods of Eagle, Tammy Van Wyngarden of Omaha and Cheri (Mrs. Todd) Swartzbaugh of Grand Island; one son, Troy of Dannebrog; nine grandchildren; five brothers, Richard, Gary and Dale of Grand Island; Dean of Central City; and Tom of Whittier, Calif.; and three sisters, Joann (Mrs. Allard) Bushhousen of St. Paul, Carol (Mrs. Terry) Bushhousen of Alda and Janet (Mrs. Eddy) Gardner of Tampa, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
'Onie' Baker
ST. EDWARD -- Leona "Onie" M. Baker, 70, of St. Edward died Thursday, July 13, 2000, at Cloverlodge Care Center in St. Edward.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at United Methodist-Presbyterian Church at St. Edward. The Rev. Mary Avidano will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in St. Edward.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Miller-Levander Funeral Home in St. Edward. Memorials are suggested to St. Edward Public Library.
Mrs. Baker was born
Nov. 27, 1929, to Erma Apple at Omaha. She attended St. Edward Public Schools and graduated from St. Edward High School in 1947.
She married Melvin Baker on Nov. 17, 1947, at St. Edward. They lived in Julesburg, Colo., from 1955 to 1969, then lived at Fort Collins, Colo., for two years. They moved back to a farm near St. Edward in 1971.
She enjoyed quilting, crafts, flowers and reading.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Stormy of Julesburg, Colo., and Tim of Boise, Idaho; one daughter, Sally (Mrs. Lyn) Thomas of Portland, Ore.; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Dorman Giddings
KEARNEY -- Dorman Giddings, 93, of Gibbon, died Friday, July 14, 2000, at St. Lukes Center in Kearney.
Services are pending with Godberson Mortuary in Gibbon/Shelton.
Ralph Krebsbach
LAWRENCE -- Ralph Henry Krebsbach, 79, of Lawrence, died Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at St. Francis Memorial Health Center.
A rosary will be at 3 p.m. with a mass at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at Lawrence. The Rev. Dennis Hunt will officiate.
Merten-Butler Mortuary of Blue Hill is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to St. Francis Hospice.
Mr. Krebsbach was born
June 10, 1921, in Lawrence to Joe and Mary (Grabenschroer) Krebsbach.
He married Norma A. Herz on Jan. 5, 1944. Mrs. Krebsbach died Jan. 10, 1999. They lived and farmed on farms southeast and northeast of Lawrence. The family moved to Lawrence so Mr. Krebsbach could help his father operate Joe's Place, a popular pool hall.
He later became building and land maintenance person for Sacred Heart Catholic Church, School and Cemetery. He then worked for the Lawrence Grain Company until his retirement.
He took great pride in his gardening and enjoyed giving the produce from it to his family and friends. He also enjoyed fishing at various lakes and sand pits in Nebraska and Kansas. He enjoyed following and watching Nebraska Cornhusker football. He also spent time helping his two sisters in Lawrence.
He was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters and Sacred Heart Catholic Church and was a past member of the Lawrence Fire Department
Survivors include one son, Robert of Grand Island; five sisters, Stephanie Bolte and Irene Himmelberg, both of Lawrence, Sister Kathleen Krebsbach of Davenport, Iowa, Mary LaVern Herbek of Hastings and Helena Oye of Three Rivers, Mich.; two brothers, George of Taft, Calif. and Victor of Boston; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by one son, Larry; one brother, Wilford; and one sister, Joesphone Grube.
'Luke' Zimmerman
RISING CITY -- Lucas "Luke" Gene Zimmerman, 26, of Rising City, died Wednesday, July 12, 2000, as the result of a vehicle accident in Rising City.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Peace Lutheran Church in Columbus. The Revs. Michael V. Klatt and Steven Williams will officiate. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Cemetery at Columbus.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at McKown Funeral Home in Columbus. Further visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until service time Monday at the church.
There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. Monday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the Baby Zimmerman Trust Fund.
Mr. Zimmerman was born
April 16, 1974, at Belleville, Kan. to Paul and Donna Jean (Korb) Zimmerman. He graduated from Lakeview High School in Columbus in 1992.
He married Julie Czaplewski on Sept. 25, 1999. He currently was working for Heartland Builders in Columbus.
He enjoyed league bowling, served on a race car pit crew, sand volleyball league and enjoyed music.
Survivors include his wife; his parents of Belton, Texas; one sister, Misti Zimmerman of Lincoln; one brother, Tony of Oakwood, Ga. and a father-in-law, Wayne Czaplewski of Lincoln.
Elmer Cain
WHITEWATER, Kan. -- Elmer Cain, 85, of Whitewater, Kan., died Thursday, July 13, 2000, in Whitewater.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Gabriel's Church in Hazard. The Rev. Jan Smutny will officiate. Burial will be in he Hazard Cemetery.
A Christian wake service will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the church. Rasmussen Mortuary in Ravenna is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Cain was born
March 17, 1915, near Neoga, Ill. to Robert O. and Mary Nell (Sponsler) Cain.
He married Albertha Marie Jurkiewicz on Aug. 6, 1938, in North Platte. The couple lived in Kansas City, Kan. He worked as a truck driver for the Kansas Highway Department. They moved to Whitewater three years ago.
Survivors include two sons, John of Topeka, Kan. and Rick of Louisburg, Kan.; one daughter, Mary Ellen Gray of Whitewater; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife on May 13, 2000.
William Vogel
WOODSTOCK, Ill. -- William D. Vogel, 76, of Woodstock, formerly of Des Plaines and Algonquin, Ill., died July 2, 2000, at Hearthstone Manor at Woodstock.
Services were July 6, 2000 at Querhammer and Flagg Funeral Home at Crystal Lake, Ill. Burial was in Elmwood Cemetery at River Grove.
Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Northeastern Illinois or to the American Lung Association.
Mr. Vogel was born
June 22, 1924, in Grand Island to Fred William and Freida (Gosda) Vogel. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
He married Concetta "Connie" Alexander on Jan. 28, 1950, in Chicago. Mrs. Vogel died in 1996. Mr. Vogel was employed as a machinist prior to his retirement.
Survivors include one daughter, Sue (Mrs. Gary) Schleicher of Woodstock; two sons, Don of Streamwood and Dale of Algonquin; seven grandchildren; and two sisters, Dorothy Tobin of Ohio and Marian Waldanz of Schaumburg.
In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by one daughter, Georgia and one sister, Evelyn.
Jack Lockhart
Jack D. Lockhart, 65, of Grand Island died Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at his home.
Mr. Lockhart's body was cremated. Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The Rev. Pat Grindol will officiate.
Memorials are suggested to the National Kidney Foundation.
Mr. Lockhart was born
on Nov. 5, 1934, at Gibbon to Wallace and Mary Jane (Hald) Lockhart. He grew up and attended school in Grand Island. Mr. Lockhart played basketball for Grand Island Senior High and graduated in 1952.
He married Carol Steele on Dec. 14, 1953. He served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1958.
Following his service, he returned to Grand Island. He worked for Green Body Shop at Fourth and Walnut. The business moved to West Highway 30 in 1966 and operated as Green's Body and Equipment. Mr. Lockhart was named manager at the new location. He continued to manage the business in the 1990s, when it became Eustis Body Shop. He retired in January 1999.
He had owned race horses and enjoyed horse racing and other sports.
Survivors include two sons, Tim of Grand Island and Kevin of Riverton, Wyo.; two daughters, Hali Lockhart of Grand Island and Kimberly Lockhart of Central City; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one brother, Larry Lockhart of San Diego.
His wife died on Oct. 10, 1993. He also was preceded in death by a grandson.
