Mary Cooksey
Mary Catherine Cooksey, 72, of Grand Island died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, the Kidney Foundation or Trinity United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Cooksey was born
on Jan. 22, 1927, at Jonesboro, Ark., to L.O. Sr. and Dora (Campbell) Stallings. She grew up and was educated in Jonesboro and graduated from Jonesboro High School in 1944. She graduated from Jonesboro Business School in 1946.
She married Tommy F. Cooksey on Nov. 25, 1955, at Jonesboro. The couple lived in Grand Island for 40 years. She worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. as an office administrator for 45 years.
Mrs. Cooksey was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the Methodist Women's Circle.
Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Theresa Cooksey of Kansas; and two brothers, Ed Stallings and L.O. Stallings Jr., both of Jonesboro, Ark.
She was preceded in death by a foster son, Jerry Hurrel.
Rebecca Mehring-Zimmerman
Rebecca L. Mehring-Zimmerman, 54, of Grand Island died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at St. Francis Memorial Health Center.
Arrangements are pending with Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Helen Wenn
Helen L. Wenn, 77, of Grand Island died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Lincoln.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rev. Don Larmore will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Apfel-Butler Geddes Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to St. Francis Medical Center.
Mrs. Wenn was born
on Sept. 21, 1921, at York to William and Cordelia (Tipton) Hurley. She grew up and was educated at York and graduated from York High School.
She married Arnold C. Wenn on May 22, 1944, at Fort Smith, Ark. The couple traveled throughout the word when Mr. Wenn was in the U.S. Air Force.
They moved to Grand Island in 1963. Mrs. Wenn began working for St. Francis Hospital as the switchboard operator in 1974 and retired in 1985. Mr. Wenn died in 1982.
Mrs. Wenn was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and the Eagles. She enjoyed playing bingo.
Survivors include one son, Arnold C. "Ace" Wenn of Grand Island; two daughters, Bernadette "Bunny" (Mrs. Don) Scott of Light House Point, Fla., and Sharon (Mrs. Jack) Campbell of North Augusta, S.C.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Pat (Mrs. Don) Burnett of Southlake, Texas, Loyola Farmer of Exeter and Jean (Mrs. Riley) Howard of Greeley, Colo.; and one brother, Thomas Hurley of Fargo, N.D.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Bill; and a sister, Mary.
Leslie DeLashmutt
BURWELL -- Leslie Frank "Bud" DeLashmutt, 77, of Burwell died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Mr. DeLashmutt was cremated.
Memorial services are pending at Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell.
Marie Dobson
SPALDING -- Marie L. Dobson, 81, of Spalding died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, at her home.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church in Primrose. Burial will be in Dublin Cemetery in Primrose.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m., with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday at Dolce-Scheef Mortuary in Spalding.
Memorials are suggested to the Spalding Rescue Unit.
Mrs. Dobson was born
on Sept. 22, 1917, on the family farm north of Primrose to Thomas and Lillian (Topping) McBride. She was educated at District 52, the Little Red School.
She married Seth W. Dobson on Nov. 10, 1937, at Timber Creek Parsonage. They lived on a farm in the Primrose area. They moved to Spalding in 1962. She was a homemaker.
She enjoyed horse racing and watching football. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Primrose.
Survivors include three daughters, Sandra (Mrs. Daryl) Crowell of Loveland, Colo., Sethee (Mrs. Donald) Mosier of Cedar Rapids and Linda (Mrs. Benje) Hookstra of Spalding; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two sisters, Myrtle Hooker of Albion and Pat Loeffler of Denver.
She was preceded in death by her husband and two brothers.
Mary Rolf
FULLERTON -- Mary Rolf, 95, of Fullerton died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, at Litzenberg Long-Term Care in Central City.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Palmer's Funeral Home in Fullerton. The Rev. Mary McQueen will officiate. Burial will be in the Main Cemetery at Belgrade.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Agnes Stromp
SPALDING -- Agnes M. Stromp, 94, of Spalding died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, at Friendship Villa in Spalding.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spalding. The Rev. Joe Hannipal will officiate. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery.
Dolce-Scheef Mortuary in Spalding is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Stromp was born
on April 23, 1905, on the family homestead northeast of Spalding to Joseph and Philippine (DePorter) Ballweg. She attended District 47 School and graduated from Spalding Academy in 1922. She taught in rural schools for six years.
She married George Stromp on Feb. 18, 1930, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spalding. She farmed with her husband northeast of Spalding until 1941, when they moved to Cedar Valley west of Spalding and ranched.
After her children had graduated, Mrs. Stromp returned to college in 1954 and continued teaching for 14 more years. The couple moved to Spalding in 1984.
Mrs. Stromp served as city librarian for 12 years, taught CCD for several years and became a stand-in grandmother in helping the Head Start program. She was a member of St. Ann's Altar Society, Catholic Daughters and American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include one daughter, Rosemary Shirley of Omaha; three sons, Gerald of Omaha and James and Richard of Spalding; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren; and one brother, Clement Ballweg of Spalding.
She was preceded in death by her husband; an infant son, Paul; one granddaughter; and two sisters, Mabel Rose Ballweg and Marhy Louise Keber.
Bill Vandeman
AURORA -- William Dale "Bill" Vandeman, 63, of Aurora died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, in Aurora.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Messiah Lutheran Church in Aurora. The Rev. Al Duminy will officiate. Burial will be in the Aurora Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Higby Mortuary.
Mr. Vandeman was born
in South Bend to Clarence and Eula (Wagner) Vandeman. He attended school in Ashland.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy after high school and was stationed in California on the USS Knudson from 1954 to 1962.
He married Cheryl Sikyta on Aug. 27, 1962. They lived in Ashland, Imperial and Aurora.
He married Marylyn Svoboda on Sept. 14, 1992. He was the utilities superintendent for the city of Aurora.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and 40 and Eight. He was District 34 representative for the Silver Haired Legislature and secretary of the Nebraska Water Organization.
He loved his Harley.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Dave of Ankeny, Iowa, and Dan of Omaha; two stepdaughters, Mary (Mrs. Dell) Harris and Stacy Cooper; four grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and four brothers, Bob, Jim, Fred and Larry.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, William Dale Jr.
Jack Boroff
WEATHERFORD, Texas -- Jack L. Boroff, 67, of Weatherford, Texas, formerly of Grand Island, died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at his home.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home in Grand Island. The Rev. Robert Harms will officiate. Mr. Boroff was cremated. Inurnment will be in Cedarview Cemetery at Doniphan.
There will be no visitation.
Paul Shotkoski
MESA, Ariz. -- Paul William Shotkoski, 42, of Mesa, Ariz., died from injuries suffered in an automobile accident near Show Low, Ariz., on Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999.
Graveside services will be on Friday at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver. Fletcher's Mortuary of Show Low, Ariz., is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Shotkoski was born
on Jan. 14, 1957, in Fullerton. He served in the U.S. Army. He worked as a truck driver and loved the Denver Broncos. He had lived in Mesa, Ariz., for the past 10 years.
Survivors include four children, John L. Shotkoski of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Rebecca Shotkoski, Jamie Shotkoski and Trevor Shotkoski, all of Grand Island; his mother, Miyoko Shotkoski of Denver; and three brothers, Alex of California and John and Adam, both of Denver.
He was preceded in death by his father and a brother.
