Victor E. Lofgreen

Hastings resident Victor Eugene Lofgreen, 79, died Monday, July 26, 1999, at his home.
Services are 2 p.m. Friday at Enfield Funeral Home in Norton, Kan., with the Rev. Jeff Nielsen officiating. Burial will be in the Norton Cemetery. Visitation is 3-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Mr. Lofgreen was born Nov. 7, 1919, to Burdge and Ada Blanche (Porter) Lofgreen in Norton, Kan. He attended Dry Creek Rural Grade School and graduated from Norton High School. He served as a pilot during World War II, flying the Burma Hump in the Air Transport Command. After the war, he graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a doctorate of dentistry degree. He married Phyllis Ann Miler. He practiced dentistry in Lincoln for 20 years and in Hastings for 21 years. On June 15, 1996, he married Mary Jane Trusdale-Duis in Lincoln. They lived in Hastings. He taught periodontal dentistry at UNL and dental hygiene at Central Community College-Hastings.
He was a member of the American Dental Association, the Association of Institutional Dentistry, the American Legion and the VFW. He also belonged to the Experimental Aircraft Association, the Nebraska Antique Aircraft Association and the Young Eagles Flight Group.
Survivors are his wife; five sons, Victor of Chicago, Mark and Chris, both of Lincoln, Kaj of Phoenix and Cass of Steilacoom, Wash.; one daughter, Deborah Lofgreen of Columbia, Mo.; one stepson, Bob Duis of New Richmond, Wis.; one stepdaughter, Betsy Glenn of New Richmond; two brothers, Volney of Grand Island and Denzel of Norton, Kan.; eight grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Etta Nees

Mankato, Kan., resident Etta (Fields) Nees, 93, died Tuesday, July 27, 1999, at Jewell County Hospital, Longterm Care in Mankato.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Melby Mortuary chapel in Mankato with the Rev. Thaddeus Hinkle officiating. Burial will be in Wallace Cemetery in Jewell, Kan. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the mortuary.
Mrs. Nees was born Sept. 20, 1905, to William and Mattie Mae (Cahoun) Fields in Bucklin, Mo. She worked as a nurses aid at the Wilbeck Nursing Home in Mankato. On Aug. 25, 1926, she married Fredrick Carl Nees.
She was a member of the Harmony United Methodist Church, the VFW Auxiliary, Circle Golden Years Club and the Extension Homemaker Unit, all of Mankato. She also was a member of the Friendship Circle in Jewell.
Survivors are four daughters, Shelby Johnson of Mankato, Idess Fren Larsen of Payette, Ind., Phyllis D. Boden of Lebanon, Kan., and Patsy Jo Simms of Central City; one son, Jimmy K. of Alda; one sister, Erma Halterman of Warsaw, Mo.; 24 grandchildren; and 38 great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.
Greta L. Wolfe

Minden resident Greta L. (Ecklor) Wolfe, 84, died Monday, July 26, 1999, at Kearney County Health Services Long Term Care in Minden.
Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Minden with the Rev. Dr. Bill Hunter officiating. Burial will be in the Minden Cemetery. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-8 p.m. today at Layton Funeral Home in Minden.
Mrs. Wolfe was born Aug. 23, 1914, to George and Dora Ecklor in North Branch, Kan. She moved to Red Cloud at an early age and graduated from Red Cloud High School. On Oct. 2, 1933, she married William C. Wolfe in Red Cloud. In 1939 they moved to Minden and opened Wolfe's Market. They retired in 1973. In 1983 her husband died.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church and its women's organizations and of the Order of the Eastern Star, both in Minden.
Surviving is one son, Randal of Minden.
LaVerne R. Cool

Shickley resident LaVerne Ray Cool, 61, died Friday, July 23, 1999, at Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva.
Services were Monday at the United Methodist Church in Shickley with the Rev. Mark Richardson officiating. Burial with military rites by the Shickley American Legion Post No. 154 was in the Shickley Public Cemetery. Farmer and Son Funeral Home of Geneva was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Cool was born June 16, 1938, to Raymond John and Anna (Eltiste) Cool in Lexington. He graduated from Sumner High School in Sumner and joined the U.S. Marine Corps where he was stationed in Japan. After his honorable discharge, he attended Kearney State College. He graduated with bachelor's and a master's degrees. In 1965 he married Kathryn Kay Kraus. They lived in Shickley where he taught school for 33 years. In 1998 he retired.
Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Beth Buresh of Kansas City, Mo.; one son, Michael of Pleasanton; his mother of Sumner; one sister, Patsy Rader of Sumner; and two grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to the family.
Tammy S. Hinrichs

Hastings resident Tammy Sue (Miller) Hinrichs, 29, of 1935 E. Lochland Road, died Saturday, July 24, 1999, in rural Adams County.
Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Shari Duminy officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Trumbull. Visitation is 6-9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. until services Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Hinrichs was born July 3, 1970, to Lonnie and Mary Ellen (Ryan) Miller in Hastings. She attended schools in Harvard, Hastings and Trumbull. On Nov. 30, 1991, she married Lyndell D. Hinrichs in Hastings. She worked as a Home Interior sales representative and as a care staff member at Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion in Hastings and at Prairie Winds in Doniphan. She was a lifelong resident of Clay and Adams counties.
Survivors are her husband; two sons, Michael and Nicholas, both at home; her mother of Hastings; her father of Hansen; her stepfather, Gary Behrends of Giltner; her grandmother, Winona Miller of Longbranch, Wash., and two sisters, Shelly Hurt and Denna Behrends, both of Hastings.
Memorials may be given to the family.
Robert J. Wheeler

Hastings resident Robert J. Wheeler, 65, of 1247 N. Burlington Ave., died Sunday, July 25, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Christian Church in Hastings with the Rev. Judith Allen officiating. Burial will be 3 p.m. Friday in the Masonic Cemetery in Bucklin, Mo. Visitation is 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hastings.
Mr. Wheeler was born July 17, 1934, to Ralph J. and Jessie (Francisco) Wheeler in Belaire, Mo. He attended elementary school in Wharton, Texas, and Chillicothe, Mo., and graduated from Brookfield (Mo.) High School. He graduated from Truman State University in Crooksville, Mo., in 1960. From 1953-56 he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. On Feb. 8, 1958, he married Nancy Bohnsack. He worked for Donaldson Manufacturing in Chillicothe; Xerox in Rochester, N.Y.; Hercules Powder in Lawrence, Kan.; York Manufacturing in York; Chief Industries in Grand Island; Wheeler Construction in Grand Island, where he was president; Hastings Pork and finally the Nebraska Aluminum Castings in Hastings. He also was a former private pilot.
He was a member of the First Christian Church, the Brookfield, Mo., Masonic Lodge No. 86, Toastmasters in Hastings, the YMCA, Nebraska Storytellers and the Truman State University Alumni Association.
Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Ann Morris of Lincoln; two sons, Ralph of Lincoln and Robert of Yorktown, Va.; one sister, Susan Greenman of Cadillac, Mich.; and nine grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister.
Memorials may be given to the First Christian Church or to Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital Cardiac Rehab.
Herbert Huber

Sutton resident Herbert Huber, 94, died Sunday, July 25, 1999, at the Sutton Community Home.
Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at Kohler Mortuary in Sutton with the Free German Reformed Salem Church elders officiating. Burial will be in the Free German Reformed Salem Church Cemetery near Sutton.
Mr. Huber was born June 15, 1905, to Peter and Elizabeth (Hust) Huber near Sutton. He attended District 8 country school. On April 11, 1935, he married Claudia Zimbelman in Geneva. They lived on a farm near Sutton until 1966 when they moved into Sutton. He had been a resident of the Sutton Community Home for the past four years.
He was a member of the Free German Reformed Salem Church.
Survivors are his wife; four daughters, Suzanne Nuss of Sutton, Doris Sanner of Lincoln, Elaine Vrbka of Waco and Verleen Barrett of Beaver Crossing; three sons, Lavern and Waldeen, both of Sutton, and Kenneth of Weiterstadt, Germany; one sister, Gertrude Griess of Sutton; 17 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren.

Donald E. Metzer

Former Hastings resident Donald Eugene Metzer, 65, of Phoenix died Monday, July 26, 1999, in Phoenix.
The remains were cremated. There will be no services. Guaranty Mortuary of Phoenix is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Metzer was born Aug. 29, 1933, to Louis and Faye Berniece (Cobb) Metzer in Ayr. On July 31, 1954, he married Donna Nass. They later divorced in 1980. He worked in construction and sub-contracted for Johnson Imperial Homes in Hastings before owning and operating Metzer Construction and Dry Wall. In 1981 he moved to Phoenix.
Survivors are three daughters, Debra Stromer of Ayr, Sandra Kelley of Lincoln and Deana Groves of Blue Hill; one brother, Charles of Omaha; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by one brother.
Dean A. Schinzel

Sutton resident Dean Andrew Schinzel, 66, died Monday, July 26, 1999, at the St. Elizabeth Community Health Center in Lincoln.
Services are 10 a.m. Friday at the Hope Reformed Church in Sutton with the Rev. George Horner officiating. Burial will be the Grafton Cemetery in Grafton.
Mr. Schinzel was born May 4, 1933, to Ralph Milton and Gladys Vivian (Hubbard) Schinzel near Grafton. He graduated from Sutton High School in 1951 and from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1957 with a bachelor's degree in agriculture. After college, he farmed on the family farm near Grafton. On Dec. 5, 1987, he married Dorothy A. Dicke in Sutton. They lived in Sutton but continued to farm near Grafton.
He was a member of the Hope Reformed Church and past board president of the parents group for the Martin Luther Home for six years.
Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Diane Ellis of Humbolt and Carolyn Strathman of Goff, Kan.; one son, Melvin Leksik of Beatrice; one sister, Phyllis Samuelson of Blue Springs; two brothers, Charles of Arlington, Texas, and Waldo of Geneva; and five grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to the Hope Reformed Church or the Sutton Christian School.
Eva C. Rogers

Superior resident Eva Coleene (VanMeter) Rogers, 69, died Sunday, July 25, 1999, at Brodstone Memorial Nuckolls County Hospital in Superior.
Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at Megrue-Price Funeral Home chapel in Superior with the Rev. Mark Imel officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Superior. Visitation is until 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mrs. Rogers was born April 1, 1930, to Chester and Gladys (Poole) VanMeter near Formoso, Kan. She attended Valley View rural school in Formoso and Lovewell High School in Lovewell, Kan. On May 29, 1947, she married Donald Lyle Rogers in Mankato, Kan. They lived in Hardy and Superior. She was the owner and operator of Bow Wow Kennel in Superior. She also worked as a nurse at the Hutchinson, Kan., and Superior hospitals and worked at Pizza Hut in Superior. Her husband died on May 4, 1994.
She was a member of the Church of Christ in Superior, the Hospital Auxiliary, Christian Women's Club and Bible Study Group.
Survivors are four daughters; Patricia Holling and Eleanor Dodge, both of Superior, and Diane Cox and Reta Boswell, both of Belleville, Kan.; two sons, Johnnie of Superior and Keith of Guide Rock; three sisters, Maxine Renken and Norma Dull, both of Hutchinson, Kan., and Barbara Pogue of Haven, Kan.; two brothers, Ivan of Webber, Kan., and Marvin of Springfield, Mo.; and 12 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Beverly Jo and one grandchild.

Iona M. Gentert Carney

Hastings resident Iona M. (Edwards) Gentert Carney, 86, of 2319 W. Fourth St., died Saturday, July 24, 1999, at Good Samaritan Village Villa Grace.
Rosary is 7:30 p.m. today at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home chapel in Hastings. Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Hastings with the Rev. David Bourek officiating. Burial will be in the Assumption Cemetery in Assumption. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mrs. Carney was born July 24, 1913, to George and Mary (Harth) Edwards in Croferville, Ore. She attended elementary school in Assumption and graduated from Holstein High School in Holstein. On July 24, 1929, she married Vern Gentert. He died Dec. 25, 1961. From 1962-67 she worked at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings as a nurses aid. She worked at the Grand Island Ordinance Plant from 1967-70 and at Good Samaritan Village in Hastings from 1970-73. She also did domestic work for 25 years. On March 3, 1973, she married Raymond Carney. He died Dec. 10, 1992.
She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church and its Altar Society.
Survivors are one son, DeWayne Gentert of Lincoln; one sister, Marge Breshears of Salem, Ore.; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Donald Gentert; three sisters; and two brothers.
